so...
our computer hates me. it asked me if i wanted it to update my itunes library. so i said yes that would be nice. so it did its thing and then i couldnt find a bunch of music. i guess what it did is decide to not recognize the music i have thats not in the itunes folder.
does anyone know if anything bad would happen if i organize the files myself and move the folders so they are all together?

Ballmer thinks the public isn't saying they still want it, so the more people who sign the better armed they are to get him to stop trying to push his Vista propaganda.

Does anyone happen to know any DBAs who do consulting work?
My dad has given me a massive project for his website that requires an extensive revamp of their database and after speaking to the DBA at work here I'm thinking it would be an incredibly stupid idea to try to do it myself, so looking to hire out the design of the database schema and necessary stored Procedures.

Anyone have experience/recommendations regarding Dell laptops? Advice for or against them? Now that I finally have internet at my house, I'm realizing again just how much I need to get a new computer. I'm thinking of this one, from costco, but would have to get it this weekend before the sale ends. Unfortunately they don't have it at their physical store so I can't check out the feel and look in person.
Main specs:
Processor & Memory:
* Intel Core 2 Duo Processor T8300 at 2.4GHz
* 3MB L2 cache
* 800MHz Front Side Bus
* 4GB DDR2 SDRAM at 667MHz, 2 Dimm(Shared)
Drives:
* 320GB 5400RPM Samsung Hard Drive
* 8X DVD+/-RW Dual Layer Drive
Graphics & Video:
* 14.1" Wide XGA Glossy Display (1280x800)

Find out what OS it is running, I would not recomend getting 64bit Vista, make sure it has 32bit Vista. If you get it with 64bit Vista you will run into problems installing older programs and even some new ones. Also I doubt you can, but I would try for XP.

I liked their laptops. The one I used was a little bulkier than I would have liked, but it made up for it in sturdiness and dependability. I think those are their slimmed down versions. My recommendation is to go to cnet.com and look at the person product reviews for it.

Specs look good. Dell laptops tend to need to be replaced after 18-24 months, but can survive upwards of 36 (mine is barely hanging on at 31).

Unless you're into playing games, that model should be able to handle anything you throw at it. If you do play any sort of games or watch a lot of super-hires video, you might want to look into a similar model with an upgraded video processor/card.
Take Shane's advice as well. 64-bit Vista just doesn't have enough support at the moment.

Alas, all the specs say is "Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium". I don't know whether that is 64 or 43bit.
I'm not into gaming that much. The only game I've played on my computer in recent memory is KOTOR. The upgraded video card idea sounds nice, but wouldn't be an option for this particular course - this is an as-built system from costco. One of the main reasons I was looking at it was that it was significantly cheaper than a similar built system from the dell website.
One of my criteria is a lighter, slimmer laptop. This one actually goes over my weight ideal a bit (rather be under 5lbs), but it made up for it with the 2.4GHz at a decent price.
However, I am very concerned about AR's comment regarding lifetime. They only last 2 years? 3 at most? I buy computers to last for longer than that. My last computer (desktop) was bought in... 2001, I believe, so 7 years. While I don't insist it has to last that long, 2 years would be way too short for me. I need something that will be good for at least 4 years, hopefully more. Why do the dell laptops need replacing so soon? Do they die? In what way? Is that typical of all laptops, or a dell problem? (My only laptop experience so far has been my work computer, an HP which is going on 20 months now.)
I did read the reviews on cnet for this system. It seemed decent, but I think the review might have been a little out of date, and was for a slightly slower processor. And I wasn't sure whether the other components were the same or not.

Typical lifecycles for laptops and most PCs is 2-3 years. It's possible for them to last longer, but usually after 2 years, their performance goes downhill. I don't know if it's Dells in particular or all laptops in general.
If all you're planning on doing is surfing the web and writing and reading the odd document, though, maybe I recommend the Eee PC? It's half the cost, weighs a lot less and with it's Linux OS, it'll probably last for a LONG time.

Maybe it's just the late-model Dells... or certain lines.

Not a Dell, but the computer I built myself back in '03 is still alive and kicking today. In fact, it was the only computer I had that would correctly boot and run the recovery CD-ROM I needed to recover my Mac's Windows partition (long story). Two of the fans on the motherboard have long since died, but it still produces less heat than my newer desktops.

Yeah... bits and pieces of the PC I built back in '02 survive to this day. Parts were rebuilt in '03, '04, and '05... but original parts of it are still there.

Best Buy sucks. I was hoping to actually see a version of this laptop in person. We called Best Buy to see if they had one on display, and they claimed that they did. So we drove over there... went to a lot of hassle finding parking at this mall... only to find that they didn't have the laptop on display. They pointed me to a completely different model and thought that was adequate. WTF?
At this point, about all I can do is order the system sight-unseen and see if I like it. Costco has a 90 day return policy; if I find I don't like it, I'll have the option to return it. It'd be less hassle to see whether I like it *before* buying it, but... *shrug*
And I'm still worried about lifetime, but I'm not sure what to do about it. Is this a laptop problem in general, or does Dell have a bad rep for laptops?
