For those who don't know, Linda and I are foster parents. We went through the training earlier this year and became certified in mid-April to be foster parents. That means, according to Adams County, we can be a temporary home for kids "in the system" until they find a permanent home.

We are just foster parents and not looking to adopt. We can have one child in our home for anywhere from a couple of days to up to 12 months before the child is adopted, goes back with mom or dad, or is emancipated.

We have chosen (for now) to only be parents to babies between 0 and 18 months. We have the choice and since Linda has experience with this age group through being a Montessori teacher, that's the age range we're willing to be temporary parents for.

So after our big Greece and Egypt vacation, we're open for business. And Adams county called!

On Thursday, May 15th, they called us up and asked if we can take care of a 2 month-old baby for a couple of months. We happily said yes. Then they called back and said, "Our bad. He's actually 2 days old! And a preemie by 2 weeks." Holy cow!

After thinking it over, we decided to give it a whirl and say yes. So we are now the proud guardians of Eric. He was born on 5/13/08 and weighed 5 pound and 2 ounces. He's a cutie pie and is a wonder in our house. He sleeps quite a bit and even falls asleep eating. Sheesh!

We took him to Target last night and got some supplies since we weren't stocked to take care of a newborn. The totally rockin' Obi-Wannabe and Mrs. Wannabe helped us out.

He's doing well and we may bring him to the next meeting. We'll see how his immune system is developing and if he can take all y'all breathing on him!

Will post pictures later when I'm home and not blocked from those photo sites.

one of the ladies here has her son and his wife doing foster to adopt. Right now they have 2 little girls that are sisters and a little boy, all under the age of 3 or 4. The little boy is special needs, so he's over a year old and just now learning to crawl, and at least one of the girls was born already addicted to something (I forget what). It's a sad situation, but they are adopting all 3 of them and very excited.

They anticipate that some of his relatives will adopt him. Depending on how long the system takes, we could have him anywhere from 3 - 8 weeks, but we don't know for sure.

Wow, congratulations. The foster care system desperately needs good foster parents, you and Linda rock!

I was in foster care when I was fifteen (little known fact) and the family was pretty awful. The last thing a child coming from a nutty home needs is another nutty home. *shrug*

I wish you two the best of luck with this. hugs

Thank you all very much for the encouraging words and bits o' wisdom. The saying that a child is raised by a community is definitely true and there is no better community than the mighty RMFF.

So he's been doing well. Sleeping during the day and squirmy at night, so we're trying to flip that a bit. Since he was a little bit early and is such a little guy, we're trying to get him to eat, which is not an easy task. We try and wake him up for feeding time (about every 2-3 hours), but it's not always successful (the waking or feeding). Sometimes it's just 1/4 oz. (not much) at a time. But he's been getting better at staying awake and sucking it down.

Linda's going to take him to the Dr. today to make sure everything's okay and see what they say about feeding.

Finally! Pictures.

tiny babies are so cute, but my favorite age is between 1 1/2-5 grin

That's when they are the funniest and tell you great stories. Although I'm not discounting the older ages, except when the ewok makes her 'unnnnhhh' noise. That just gets on my nerves tongue

Yeah, I like the age where they interact and react to you. It's all good...except for teenagers. We didn't sign up for that!
