I got a call from an army recruiter a few weeks ago. Had to tell him I was late for my class which I was paying for with my GI Bill.

Mistress posted: I had a similar experience when I took it. They kept hounding me after. The recruiter told me I one of the highest scores ever from that area (LaJunta). He was prolly just buttering me up.
It was LaJunta, did it really take a lot to be smarter than the average redneck? And you were totally in the wrong league out there, kid. You could use words with more then 3 syllables, and you had all of your teeth.
I have no faith in those tests. They only measure your ability to take a test.

I think I maybe talked to a recruiter once... over the phone... it was early in the morning... and that was like 6 years ago. I never hear from recruiters.

That explains why I don't have to report to the home office, why they let me move to Denver, and why they send me to the arse ends of the world.

As an ex-USAF Sgt with 10 years served, my Grandfather (ex-Marine and Army) urged me to join either the Coast Guard or USAF as he felt they treated their folks better. It seemed to be quite true in my case. The Navy treats their folks well and they are some of my favorite friends - most of which retired. In the USAF, for the most part, the Officers do the fighting. The enlisted folks are mostly mission support. I got out because I was away from home 6-10 months out of the year, which killed my marriage. So I got out and ended up getting divorced anyways, so in hindsight, I should have stayed in.
If you have a good regular job, join the Reserves. I'm considering joining the Army Reserves as a Warrant Officer (yes, at 41) just to get my retirement - but it's a world of difference from the USAF. Visit any USAF base and compare it with an Army Post - night and day in most cases. The money goes into quality of life for their people, like Bill says. I still call the USAF "Chair-borne Rangers", as it's pretty cushy compared to the other services. But they do the mission.
I still support the USAF in my regular job as a contractor. I do the same job, but get paid more. But sometimes I wish I'd just finished my service and pulled retirement pay.

I still consider going back in (after I get my degree) as an officer, so I can finish my retirement. But in the meantime, I took a government job so I can at least use all those years (12) towards my retirement. It's the next best thing.
If I go back in, it'll be in intel... or maybe something to do with UAVs... if they'll let me. But I'm just not sure if I want to play the deployment game anymore.

Just for a little bit of a dissenting opinion:
After I was put on the wait list for my fall back school (CU), I decided to pretty much drop out of the world and spent 6 months going out on the road in my '74 Plymouth Valiant (man I miss that car).
I drove around seeing the country, sleeping in rest stops on the highway, getting high and catching up with and dropping in on old friends..
I ended up in NYC and then went to college.
I've never been within 100 yards of a recruiting office for any armed service, and actually burned my Selective Service card the day I turned 25. I'm not real big on the idea of submitting to any authority higher than my own conscience.
18 years later, I'm now quite successful in my field, married, and very happy with my life and friends.
Of course, I don't knock anyone else's choices, just offering an alternative.

I did the SS thing 'cause I was told it was the law (not that I ever expected to be drafted), but while I hold our armed forces folks in high esteem for doing what they do, it's totally not my bag, baby.
But neither is Michael's tree-hugging hippy ways. Of course, the car thing and the open road I can totally grok.

My grandpa, based on what he had seen as a marine operating a machine gun in the pacific theatre of WWII saw enough things that he basically "forbid" any of his kids or grandkids from joining any armed forces. However, at the time I was getting ready to go off to college, just before he died he told me that he'd approve if I joined the Air Force because at the time I was going to major in Astrophysics and wanted to ultimately get into space and the Air Force tends to be the quickest way. I changed my major and of course never joined up, but I'd still LOVE to get into space... can't wait till the tourism is actually affordable.

Thanks everyone. Got some insight into things I never knew before.
Yeah, the Selective Service, I had the government folk tell me it wasn't required, only if you wanted to vote, and since I didn't want to vote when I was 18, I didn't have to go into the selective service. That was back in 2003.
Now, their telling everyone coming out of High School that its required to be in the selctive service. Was I told the wrong thing or did the law change? I'm still not part of the selective service, but on the flip side, I don't want to be going against the law either. If they won't take me medically (once I find out if they will or not), then I don't have to worry about be drafted anyways.

It is a legal requirement to be registered with the selective service as a male 18-25.
