Unfortunately the kids grew up and began to see how sad Zekk's life really was, and the delusion they all shared died.
You have no idea the plot bunny you've just given me.
I think there are a lot of factors involved in Zekk's decision to join the Shadow Academy.
Desire to improve his life or pride?
I definitely say both.
I totally agree that it had come to a point where he couldn't pretend how his life was so free and exhilirating anymore- the twins were getting older and realizing that needing to scavenge for your next meal wasn't adventure, it was sad. And Zekk's pride wouldn't accept that, and didn't want their pity. I don't think he ever wanted to think of himself as below anyone, hence his disapproval of those gangs, his intense humiliation when he ate the bouquet.
Also, I think Zekk was a very lonely kid. True, he does seem to enjoy his solitude at times, but still...orphaned at nine, living with an old man who has frequent jobs that take him far from home and friends that spend most of their time at school? Plus, once those friends started to pity him, I think it triggered a lot of things at once- his loneliness, his pride, and he just couldn't pretend his life was so incredible anymore, cue the self-deprecation and angst.
It's not crazy that he would be flattered by Brakiss' attention, especially when most adults pass him off as a dirty, ragged street kid. Especially when Brakiss offered him an escape from the underlevels, and when the relationship between Zekk and the twins had gotten a little rocky. It wouldn't have been hard to convince such a confused kid that his friends weren't really friends. I do think Zekk's pride had a role to play- he did want to prove to the twins that he could be someone, that he could be a worthy person to know. And from there, I think he wanted to join the Second Imperium in the hopes that he could help people like himself. Gradually, of course, that kind of faded and he got a bit power-hungry and all. (Thought it's worth noting that Zekk's compassion, conscience, whatever, never went away- he had to kind of fight himself to ignore it. He always did have some control, even when his emotions were rollercoaster-ing.)
Shadow Academy, evil or no, taught Zekk a lot- and if he hadn't had the experience, he certainly wouldn't be where he is now.

People need to start giving Zekk some more respect. Not just in the whole "who will Jaina get with?" issue (though that's probably been so done to death that nobody cares anymore), but in the sense that Zekk is a great Jedi and a good person. It's just that people seem to enjoy writing him as a lost little puppy dog who pines after Jaina. Now that DOES show how much he cares for her (in a way), but he is worth SO much more!
We need an author who is going to give our boy some of the justice that he so rightly deserves!

Also, one thing that constantly gets under my skin is how some people are saying that Zekk will die in Invincible, which will cause Jaina to go back to Jag. Now, although I would love it if Jaina and Zekk got together, even if they don't, I am still extremely annoyed with the number of people who say he is going to die! And the fact that people believe this will happen simply so that Jaina can go back to Jag and found the Fel dynasty with him causes me a great deal of anger and frustration.
So come on people! Let your support of Zekk be heard! ZEKK WILL NOT DIE!!!

Zekk can't die. He has to find someone... because he's far too good for curretn Jaina. She can have Jag and the two can grow miserable together.
And Brakiss dangled the carrot in front of Zekk's face and he went right for it. But who wouldn't in his position? He offered Zekk a chance to improve himself on his own terms. The twins wanted to simply fling money at him.

As a fanfic author who frequently throws Zekk into angst-ridden situations with Jaina, I do agree with you, and I'm trying to write some new stuff centered around Zekk (though I will always be drawn to and write J/Z loveliness )- a Zekk who really is stand-alone, as he should be, independant from Jaina. He's too fantastic of a character to be tied to Jaina all the time, he has his own story and everything.
So come on people! Let your support of Zekk be heard!
Amen to that!

Hey people, just swinging by to show my love for teh Zekk!
The Dark Nest Trilogy being my starting point, I initially found joiner-Zekk boring and irritating.
But reading LOTF Zekk rally grew on me and he's one of my favourite characters now. Great sense of humour, and as for his relationship with Jaina, boy I've been there myself. Being a good guy is always under appreciated.
Gotta tell you, I was real disappointed when I skimmed through the dramatis personae for Revelation and Zekk wasn't present, bringing up the rear like he usually does. Denning seems to have a good grip on him though, so I'm cautiously optimistic.
It's refreshing having a main character who isn't royalty, related to royalty or a Skywalker.

Yeah. As much as I support J/Z (always have and probably always will), I think that they both need to develop on their own first. For all we know, something may happen to Zekk in Invincible which could lead him on to a new path. One that will cement the destiny he is meant to have. Who knows, in a few years, MAYBE the J/Z issue could be more likely, if she is not tied down to Jag or anybody else.
Actually I kind of pity Jag or any guy that may get tied to Jaina. It seems that will be their main claim to fame. Same kind of thing happened to Luke's girlfriends. Callista was created mainly to be his girlfriend, but little more (no offense to any Callista fans out there!). Mara Jade, on the other hand, already had a strong back story to her name before they decided to make her Mrs. Skywalker.
Who knows? Maybe Zekk will follow this path. He could make a name for himself. And then maybe, just maybe, he could have a more realistic chance with Jaina. And if not, well, then, who knows? If nothing else, I just want that b!tch to feel a bit of regret in regards to him! She's walked over him enough already!
But I feel that although Zekk and Jaina's story may not necessarily lead to romance (as much as I'd like it to), I'd say that it is far from over.

If Zekk is not in the DP then perhaps we can hope he lives to fight another day. He is awesome. I first discovered him in the DNT and liked the J/Z ship from that, but since have decided he needs a different woman. He also needs to be made a master.

Is anyone here trying to remain spoiler free for Invincible? I tried, I really did.
I first discovered him in the DNT and liked the J/Z ship from that, but since have decided he needs a different woman.
So many people disliked him when DN was first released; it's nice to know that even his Joiner incarnation managed to snag him at least one fan. (Personally, I loved his emo Joiner incarnation, but I can also totally see how discomforting his Kafka-esque metamorphosis can be to fans. )

And it's also sad, because it remind me of what once was that no longer exists.

Hmm. It did for me too, actually.
Maybe this will work better? http://beckyrose.deviantart.com/art/Friends-84771647

Thanks.

I was thinking along the same lines. I like the friendship it shows between them, but it makes me very nostalgic.
It's part of the fanart 100 challenge, so there'll be more.

Got it, ZekksGoddess. I think there was a period in the last link. Love it and favorited it.
I discovered Zekk in the YJK. No wonder I like him. And feel for him, too.

Luke and the rest never even saw any potiental in the boy....
Shadow Academy, evil or no, taught Zekk a lot- and if he hadn't had the experience, he certainly wouldn't be where he is now.
Perhaps. I guess I have always liked Zekk because he has overcome so many obstacles in his life. Many people assumed he would never amount to anything, and the YJK series was as much his own personal journey as it was for the Solo twins and their friends. Then the NJO destroyed all that. DN gave him a chance to be seen again, and his relationship with Jaina was rekindled (though not in the way I wanted), and in LOTF, he seems to be set on a new course.
(BTW, I'm doing my best to avoid Invincible spoilers, so bear with me)
People tend to see both Zekk and Jag in terms of their relationships with Jaina. The only difference is that Zekk apparently CAN strike out on his own without Jaina, whereas Jag seems to lack that. People like the J/J relationship, but seem to have trouble seeing Jag on his own without Jaina. So in a sense, who is the better man?
Think about it for a moment.
But to be honest, I'm a bit concerned for Jaina herself. People seem to think that she will go back with Jag, marry him, and found the Force-sensitive Fel dynasty. That's all well and good, but it's also a bit predictable when you think about it. I guess that's why I continue to support her being with Zekk. To me, that will save her from a stagnant and predictable fate.
After LOTF, J/J probably is the most logical outcome, but I'm thinking if the authors wanted to shake things up, having Zekk return and having Jaina realize that she truly does love him would be a pleasant surprise. And if not, then I want Jaina to at least realize that she missed a good opportunity. Zekk is one of the people you have to admire. He has overcome one hardship after another, and still remains true to his ideals. People like him don't come by very often.
I was thinking along the same lines. I like the friendship it shows between them, but it makes me very nostalgic.
(sniff) Good times. Long gone now. Oh, how I miss them!
