Well, according to Star Wars Galaxies, Ackbar was a officer in the Mon Calamari Navy prior to his enslavement under Tarkin. I would guess that a combination of those two things lead to Ackbar's skills as a fleet commander.

Well, apparently Ackbar had a career in the military and politics. That whole bit about him being leader of Coral City never seemed right to me. Perhaps it is more accurate to say that he was the Mon Calamari military officer in charge of defending Calamari during the Imperial attacks on the world?

I think it does lead credence to the latter-day Mon Cal cruisers being akin to Hitler's Me-109s being transport aircraft, if Mon Calamari had a navy to speak of.
I imagine the Tarkin/Ackbar relationship would be an interesting one, akin to the commandant of a POW camp being social with the ranking enemy prisoner.

Yeah, I imagine that is some sort of strange way Tarkin actually enjoyed Ackbar's company. The early EU used to make mention of the fact that Tarkin loved to explain his theories and tactics to Ackbar. Tarkin obviously had a influence on Ackbar.

Nah, Tarkin just suffered from a terminal case of hubris. It happens to the most powerful despots (and Greek and Shakesperean protagonists) all the time.
He violated rule #1 of his own doctrine. He ruled by direct force, not by fear of it. Application of force turns fear to anger, and anger to rebellion.
See also: the communist partisans that the Third Reich was never able to completely crush.

Yeah, Tarkin suffered from too much arrogance and pride, but he was definately no idiot. His strategies and tactics were held in hig regard by the officers of the Imperial Starfleet. I can totally see him bragging about his plans and tactics to Ackbar, who all the while is playing the role of "dumb alien", soaking up Imperial knowledge. All of which would come in handy when he becomes a full member of the Rebel Alliance.
Also, I was thinking about one of Ackbar's greatest acchievement that gets little to no mention. Several early EU sources establish that Ackbar was one of the main leaders of the Mon Cal resistance to Imperial rule. He was the one who set up their plan to overthrow the Imperial troops on the world and take it back. Unfortunately, Ackbar was captured and presented to Tarkin before he could see this happen. Regardless, his plan was a sucess. The Mon Cals and Quarren rose and pushed the Empire off world.
Of course, thanks to later EU sourcebooks, we learn that the Mon Cals did have some weapons. Apparently they stashed them in underwater bunkers and deep space caches. When they finally began rebelling, they suddenly deployed all of these weapons. The even had secrect ship building facilites that were used to outfit Mon Cal privateers to attack Imperial forces in the sector.
I for one have always thought that a great pre-Yavin book would be the Imperial invasion of Mon Cal and the eventual taking back of the planet by its inhabitants. Ackbar and Tarkin could figure prominently in it.
Alas, it is only a dream. But, you never know when someone from Del Rey is listening.

Well, I respect your opinion on the matter, but as the threads founder I decided that Senatorial representation would be a great opportunity for this threads participants to help the EUC move in a positive direction.
For starters, there is going to be an election coming up soon in the Senate. We are going to elect a new Chancellor. Once all the candidates are up, any members of this thread can feel free to post their opinion on who we should cast our collective vote for. The Admiral Ackbar Fan Club has a single vote like every other Senate member. While I am currently our Senator, this thread is a true democracy. When the time comes for a vote, I will cast my vote for whomever the majority of you favor in the election.
Anyways, just as a little side note, Dan Wallace assured me in the Author threads that the Ackbar vs. Pellaeon clashes will still get mentioned in the upcoming New Essential Chronology.
