The PURPOSE of the EU Defense Force is to defend the Expanded Universe, its fans, and its creators from the vicious attacks, misinformation, bigotry and intolerance perpetrated by “EU-Bashers.”

Our goal is to defend the rights held by the fans of the Expanded Universe (also known as “completists”) to use the Expanded Universe as a basis of their posts across the forums without fear of personal attack. The Expanded Universe Defense Force’s goal is also to defend the right for completists to enjoy Expanded Universe material without fear of being persecuted or belittled by the “bashers.” The fans of only the movies (known as “purists”) generally do not fit into this category, but we must be ever careful of those who do.

Such bashers vary in intensity. Some only attack the EU when mentioned in speculation. Some attempt to say that EU-based discussion has NO PLACE in certain Forums. Some attack the EU AND the person who mentioned it. Some attack the EU, the person who mentioned it, the author of the book, his fans and anyone else remotely involved.

Now there are some people who like the EU, but disagree about its use in speculation. These are NOT bashers. There are also some who dislike the EU personally, but don't shove that fact down anybody's throat, but simply state their viewpoint with civility. These, also, are NOT bashers.

Now let me tell you what the EUDF is NOT:

We are NOT a group who goes around and forces people to like the EU. We are also NOT a group who runs in and argues every time someone says the EU is stupid or something. We are only interested in when those people start attacking speculators, fans, or the right of fans to speculate. Everyone is free to enjoy the EU as much or as little as they choose.

We are the Expanded Universe Defense Force, not the Expanded Universe Attack Force. Our goal is to pacify EU-bashing flame wars, NOT to incite them.

THIS GUIDE IS FOR ALL MEMBERS OF THE EUDF, REGARDLESS OF RANK

This guide is to aid the members of the Expanded Universe Defense Force in making positive contributions to the Jedi Council Forums. Originally written by Kwenn during the last edition of the home base, it was put in place to guide members through tough times – the EUDF was facing much criticism from purists and bashers, and the Command Staff felt that a more thorough set of rules was needed to keep the members in line.

Of course, even the best laid plans would be nothing if the members didn't follow the instructions. So, that's what this guide is for. You don't have to follow these rules to the letter - we're not looking for perfection - but try your best. That is all we ask.

There's quite a bit here, so I've split it into sections to make it easier for you:

SECTION I : CONDUCT AT THE HOME BASE

It's all very well going out to defend the EU in other threads, but your conduct in the EUDF thread is also important. Good conduct and being active in Home Base debates and discussions will help you gain a promotion too.

Firstly, don't bash other JCers in the Home Base. Just because it's the EUDF HQ, doesn't mean others can't see and get offended by your posts. We have had incidents in the past where members have bad-mouthed purists and bashers, and caused arguments and bannings on both sides. Try and be civil; remember, although their opinions differ from yours, the purists are still Star Wars fans, and above all, human beings - and should be treated courteously, or at the least be tolerated.

Don't spam. While nowhere near an actual military organization, the EUDF does try to incorporate a degree of military-style order. Thus, we can't have pages of spam cluttering up the thread, and blanketing a post asking for help at a serious trouble spot. Also, it puts off potential new recruits to see pages of nonsense. We're not ordering you to have no social chat at all, but don't let it drag on. There are plenty of social threads to which you can take your idle banter, or you can go to the EUDF Social Boards.

Leading on from the last point, try and get involved in Home Base discussions. Talk about the EU or Star Wars in general, and show that you have an interest in the EUDF and its members. Engaging in healthy debate may also increase your chances of promotion, and will ensure you become a well-known and respected face in the EUDF.

Don't post what is, essentially, rubbish. You don't need to post 'Ensign signing in' or 'Lieutenant signing out' all the time - or if you do, at least post something relevant afterwards. Even worse, don't merely ask if anything is happening, or if there are any trouble spots. Scan through the last page; if you see a link to a trouble spot, go to it and see if it's still active. If you don't see any links, there isn't any trouble. The posts asking if anything is going on are usually so badly timed that they are posted right after someone posts a dozen trouble spot warnings, or a basher flames us with an anti-EU tirade.

Respect your fellow members, whether they are Cadets or Commanders. Okay, you may not get on with everyone, but if you smell something fishy about another member, send a PM to one of the higher-ups. Accosting them in the base will only cause ill-feeling and useless arguments that will mire relevant posts and reports. It's fine to correct a mistake posted by someone, but don't make an issue of it.

SPOILER POLICY: All spoilers shall be clearly labeled and blacked out and/or given proper spoiler space for the duration of two (2) weeks after the release of the text.

SECTION II : TROUBLE SPOTS AND YOUR RESPONSE

This topic has been the cause of much criticism and debate as of late, so be sure you know how to effectively deal with trouble spots. First, let's define what we're talking about here:

A trouble spot, or a trouble thread, is a topic that features at least one post wherein derogatory remarks are made about the EU, or worse, its fans. Basically, if someone says 'EU sux bantha poodoo', it's a trouble spot.

However. If someone is merely stating an opinion - 'IMO, Han and Leia should have been married straightaway, rather than get into the nonsense on Dathomir' - then it isn't considered a trouble spot. Of course, the first example is also an opinion, but it is one that provokes a response, which will generally lead further, derailing the original topic and ultimately getting it locked and likely getting the offending JCers banned. These are the most dangerous, and need to be reported.

However. Again. The second example isn't trying to provoke, but it may cause someone to follow up with, 'yeah, I agree, EU sux gundark tail'. Not the response the original poster was looking for, but nevertheless, the topic is now a trouble spot.

All of this is moot, however, if subsequent posts deal with the problem. There's no point in digging up an old trouble spot if someone has already calmed it down. So first read through the thread to see what else has been said, and what the current status is. Also, be sure to note how old the thread is: resurrecting a trouble spot from languishing on page 10 isn't a good idea.

Got all that? Probably not, but try and follow it as best you can. Now, how to report those trouble spots that need reporting:

The EUDF doesn't need to know about every little comment made about the EU, so only post links to threads you think are serious. If you don't know how to post links, just copy and paste the address into your post. Someone will likely repost it as a link after. Anyway, here's what to do.

Give the name of the thread, and the forum it is located in (along with the link). Be sure to post a spoiler warning if said link is to a thread containing spoilers. Although the threat of Revenge of the Sith spoilers has passed, many do not wish to be spoiled for upcoming books.

Then post the status of the thread. New to this edition of the base is the “warning levels” of problem threads, modeled after the Terrorist Alert System put forth by the US government:

• Low: This means that the EU has simply been mentioned in a thread, but no negativity has surrounded it. You generally do not need to alert the base to this type of thread.


• Guarded: This means that there have been a minimal amount of negative comments about the EU. Again, you generally do not need to report this type of thread.


• Elevated: This means that there appears to be a chance of a canon debate of some kind taking place – but one has not started yet. EU bashing has picked up, and users are beginning to argue over the accuracy and validity of EU material. It is generally a good idea to mention this type of thread, but make sure to let people know that they only need to keep an eye on it, not post in it yet.


• High: This means that a debate of the validity and canonicity of the EU. Report this thread, and ask that a few people join the thread in back-up to put out the flames.


• Severe: This is when an extreme debate is taking place, and there are flames coming from many directions. Often times, people may have been banned for their comments. This is the time to alert everyone that their assistance is needed in the thread. Make sure that you keep your cool and do not give in to the dark side when participating in this type of thread.

Although reporting the level of the thread is up to personal judgment, we hope that you have a good idea of what type of threads fall under each category.

Now, how you can respond to bashers in such threads:

Most importantly, keep calm. There's no point in lowering yourself to the level of a basher by shouting your mouth off and bashing and flaming until you get banned. Respond to trouble with calm, collected arguments. If you have any facts or examples to backup your statements with, by all means use them. The only time I would advise against using examples is if the example itself may cause trouble: i.e, religious parallels, or linking Star Wars with real world events that some could find painful and offensive. Thus, don't try to use a Palpatine/Hitler link, or try to compare something in Star Wars with a god or a religion. Though it may be a well thought out argument, it will probably serve only to inflame people's reactions, and bring a lot of unwanted attention upon yourself.

Try not to put across a sense of aloofness in your posts. Bashers don't respond well to high-and-mighty EUDFers preaching at them. We've had trouble with this before, and it causes resentment towards us. Deliver your opinion and the facts, but try not to sneer while doing so.

Don't force your opinions down everyone's throats. That's one of the big no-no's in the Mission Statement. We are a defense force, not a flamer parade. We're here to ensure people can talk about - or at least mention and draw examples from - the EU without getting bashed and flamed. Respect or tolerate other people's opinions, but don't try to change their views. Granted, some have been swayed over to the EU side before, but on the whole I'd advise against it.

Of course, you can't win all the time, and some people are very persistent. Don't feel you must get them to henceforth cease all bashing activity; as long as you clear the air for the original topic to continue, you've done a good job.

SECTION III : BASHERS, FLAMERS, PURISTS AND COMPLETISTS

Some people can get confused with JC lingo, especially if they've only just signed up. So make sure you know who's what before you head into the fray.

Bashers are the ones we're defending the EU against. They make a habit of causing and stirring up arguments which engulf a thread and lower it into yet another EU or canon debate. Some do it just for the hell of it, while others have strong opinions of their own, and generally try to make their voices heard as much as possible.

Flamers are perhaps worse; they're certainly more personal in their approach. Flamers don't attack the EU; they attack its fans. Namely, us. They'll make derogatory remarks about you and your opinions, and will cause some to lash out and make a retort. This is not the way. Although they will likely anger you, remember it is only their opinion, not fact. Warn them to stop flaming, as such an act will get them banned or at least cautioned by a moderator. They will generally stop, and may apologize, realizing they have offended with what they thought was a joke. So don't assume they're out to get you; it may just have been a misunderstanding. If it's not, the mods will soon deal with them.

Purists are not the enemy. They don't go out of their way to provoke argument; they merely have their own opinions, like us, and must be treated fairly; as you yourself would like to be treated. They are doing no wrong. While you may not agree with what they believe, they aren't commiting a crime or offending you personally. Try to stop them from hijacking a discussion if they begin discussing their dislike of the EU, but don't treat them as bashers unless they actually become one.

Completists are utter scum, and must be exterminated immediately! No, actually, they're us: the EU fans. Nothing to fear from completists, though some can get a little overzealous, and could well spark a basher retort with their opinions.

SECTION IV: CADET TRAINING

Upon requesting to join the EUDF, new members will have a background check done upon them to make sure that they are a good poster. A message will then be sent to the Cadet Trainers, who designate a trainer for each new applicant.

They will be given missions, and if done satisfactorily, they will then take part in a “mock debate” with the trainers, in which the trainers will pretend to be bashers, and the trainees will have to respond in kind.

Once the trainers have decided that the trainees have done a satisfactory (or better) job with their training, they will alert the Command Staff, who will then make the final decision on whether or not they are placed into a squadron.

SECTION V: AN OVERVIEW

The basics:

Post links to trouble spots in the Home Base with the thread and forum name, plus a status report on how bad the trouble is. Ensure you've read the posts made, and what EUDF response has arrived.

Respond to trouble calmly, without forcing your opinion on people. Respect other people's opinions.

Bashers and flamers are trouble. Purists and completists aren't, though they could inadvertently cause it.

And one last thing...make sure the Force is with you!

PLEASE abide by these rules. In doing so, you will not only help us out a great deal, but you can earn promotions and praise for good defending.

COMMAND CREW:

Grand Admiral: The Grand Admiral is the leader of the EUDF. He has the final say on all major changes or issues.

Admiral: The Admiral is the second-in-command. He is responsible for the Crew List, promotions, changes in policy, and things of that nature.

Vice Admiral: The Vice Admiral is the third-in-command. He offers help and advice to the EUDF, and has a say in all major debates or changes.

Commodore: The Commodore has the same authority as the Vice Admiral, but is still subordinate to him.

THE GRAND ADMIRAL’S STAFF:

EUDF Founder: This is the honorary title given to Ganner, the founder of the EUDF.

Official Advisor: The Official Advisor helps and advises the EUDF from an external position.

Recruitment Officer: The Recruitment Officer is in charge of Cadet placements and promotions. He also keeps new recruits up to speed on EUDF policies.

Internal Relations Officer: The Internal Relations Officer offers help and advice to the EUDF, and helps settle disputes within the group.

Communications Officer: The Communications Officer is in charge of sending major internal/external communications when needed.

Official Liaison: The Official Liaison was an honorary title given created for a member who provides extraordinary assistance to the command staff, well beyond his or her call of duty. The Liaison is in charge of keeping up communication between various high-ranking members while the Command Staff cannot be present.

Security Chief: The Security Chief is the leader of the security unit. He is in charge of background checks on new recruits, and can prosecute unruly EUDF members.

SECURITY STAFF:

Security Chief: The Security Chief is the leader of the security unit. He is in charge of background checks on new recruits, and can prosecute unruly EUDF members.

Deputy Security Chief: The Deputy Security Chief is second-in-command to the Security Chief.

Other Security Staff: The rest of the Security Staff (the Lieutenant, Sergeant, and Officers) provide assistance to the Security Chief.

CADET TRAINING STAFF

Cadet Training Officer: The Cadet Training Officer is in charge of the Cadet Training. He oversees training procedures for new members.

Cadet Training Chief: The Cadet Training Chiefs serve as assistants to the Cadet Training Officer.

SQUADRON RANKS

Commander: The Commander is the leader of a Squadron. He/she can give promotions to the squad members, and can appeal for certain members to be moved in our out of the squad.

Lieutenant Commander: The Lieutenant Commander is the second-in-command of a squadron. He/she gives advice to the Commander, and can suggest possible promotions.

Executive Officer (XO): The Executive Officer is in charge of squadron communications. He/she reports changes in the squad (especially promotions), official EUDF business, and things of that nature to the rest of the squad.

Colonol: The Colonel is just below the Lieutenant Commander. The Colonel can serve as Lt. Commander or Commander in the event of an absence of one or both of them.

Lieutenant Colonel: The Lt. Colonel serves essentially the same role as the Colonel. He/she can also take the place of the Executive Officer in case of his/her absence.

Major: Promotions to Major are given to those members who have done exceptional work for the EUDF both internally and externally.

Captain: A Captain hasn’t been quite as successful as a Major, but is well on his or her way to promotion.

Lieutenant: A Lieutenant has proven that he or she shows a good understanding of the procedures of the EUDF.

Ensign: An Ensign is the standard, introductory rank when one is placed into a squadron. These are new members who must show their loyalty and knowledge.

OTHER RANKS

Cadet: A Cadet is the default rank for new members. Cadets must work hard and go through training to prove that they will be an asset to the EUDF.

Reserves: The Reserves are comprised of members who still wish to be affiliated with the EUDF, but do not have the time to be a regular member.
