Worse Days

Sinrebirth sat back in his Chancellor chair and considered. There was little to be said for the chaos and destruction that had heralded the past few weeks, be it in Lit City or in RPF City, or here. Sinre was contesting a particularly difficult election against Despised1 and Darth_Wanderguard, who were somehow pushing a motto of abolishment of the Senate and surviving. Democracy had proven it's worth in EU City, it appeared.

As such, Sinre was feeling particularly betrayed by EU City. When individuals voted against reason and logic - in his arguably narrowing view of what constituted such things - he felt it necessary to modify their rights. Democracy should be enshrined but limited within a new Constitution. Not discarded aside. Sinre couldn't decide whether Despised and Wanderguard were acting on their own initiative, or were being used by the 'triumvirate' to cause him unparalleled problems.

Either way, Sinre considered, they were yet another force providing despair and apathy to EU City. And so, his plan simply had to go through. Sure, the voters who had supported him would be horrified, but there was an iron fist of willpower he held that made everything possible. He was going to win the election, and then, shortly thereafter, he would act. Jello and Sey have been preparing to head to a meeting with members of the faraway JCC City - the impromptu capital city of TFN - which would be an ideal time to act, he had concluded.

However, security was going to be tightened around that time, so any action by him - or the triumvirate - was likely to be negated. And so, he had to wait until security was lax to defeat the triumvirate. As such, for now, he had to contend with a new Mod, one who he had met on several occasions. Master_Keralys. Keralys was a Lit Mod, and had been assigned to govern EU City as well, thanks in part to the various crisis' which had spilled over into other cities.

Sinre sat back, in his chair, and turned to face his desk. Either way, he had work to do. Despised1 stood there, folding his arms, and Sinre didn't look at him. "You have caused me unnecessary problems, Despised. You and Wanderguard."

"Does that change anything?"

Sinre looked up, smiling cruelly. "Not at all, my dear friend. Not at all."

---

Keralys, his dark blue Mod robes with white piping flowing in the wind, stood atop the roof of the Senate. He could see the entirety of EU City from here, the bulbous Senate building smack in the centre of the city. The towering Thrawn Fan's Unite tower eclipsed most, the Church of Waru provided the city with a religious edge no other city had. The Dark district, littered with the buildings of long abandoned firms, hung off to the west - his left - and surrounding those were the numerous houses, villa's and mansions of the city. Surrounding the city were three other cities, entities with close relations to the EU City - Lit, RPF and it's three 'boards' of cities taking up the north and west, and SWC City in the east. Keralys had decided to spend some time getting to know the city which had caused him so much trouble before he'd even visited it officially, leaving Lit City in the hands of other Mods. Folding his arms, Ker looked down, the sun providing him with a vast shadow, rippling down over the firms.

His eyes followed his shadow to it's end, his mind processing the contortions of EU City. The Triumvirate was hiding somewhere in the Dark district, and the Jedi were a fluttering candle next to the inferno which was the Sith-oriented firm. The Templars formed the Grey Jedi, themselves undertaking elections for two leaders, adopting a duumvirate rather than a pure democracy. Kev-Mas-Colcha was a wanderer moreso than the other two candidates - MarcusDade and Kahn_Iceay - and Ker had heard of him in passing, a long time ago.

But, EU City seemed to be enshrining dictatorships and 'lesser' democratic structures in the wake of the numerous crisis' and the long reign of Chancellor Sinre, who waxed and waned between minor despot to pure democrat. No surprises, there, then. Sinre was well known in Lit City, though not as much as Jello and Sey, but well known enough. And there were always ripples into other cities, so knowledge traveled fast.

Ker was about to start gathering his thoughts on the Senate elections – there was a lot of information for him to process before he even considered action – but his comlink beeped, indicating he was the closest Mod to a security breach. If the breach was not contained within the next five minutes, the next closest Mod attached to EU City’s databanks would be informed, and so forth.

Not that I need more than five minutes, grinned Ker, and he launched down the side of the Senate building, yanking a cable from his belt of Mod-gizmo’s and rappelling down, towards the target. He didn’t quite recognise the map his datapad was providing him with, not yet, so he simply darted from the shadows regardless of the location. He didn’t need to know whose office this was, situated next to the Blue Moon Cantina.

His Mod DL44 was in his hand, and he burst around the corner, firing a stun bolt at the height he would expect a person to be. It spanged off the door of the office, frying the alarm, and then Ker landed on the floor, having thrown himself high.

Sabre was sitting cross-legged on the floor, leaning on his elbow, far below the shot, and waved idly. “Hey, Ker.”

Ker blinked, and shifted his aim, but Sabre continued. “Did you know, several months ago now, we had a ‘political crisis’ when Mr44 drew his blaster on a bunch of people playing with silly string? Sure, we’d just had a Sith Civil War, and a minor Second EU City-wide Civil War which fizzled out after a few weeks, but the entire city was so peaceful that a Mod drawing his blaster for any reason was worthy of headlines?”

“No, I didn’t know that,” said Ker, frowning. An EUC Civil War? And it was the second such war? That sounded worrying. He pushed his thoughts away, keeping his blaster trained on Sabre as he sat up. “So you triggered the alarm trying to break in this office?”

“Yup,” said Sabre, obviously not feeling particularly guilty about it.

Ker blinked. “Well… why?”

“Sinre took my detective badge off me,” said Sabre, deadpan. “For my own investigations interfering with his own efforts to hunt down this triumvirate of ‘evil’.”

Ker dropped his blaster, frowning at that. “You don’t seem convinced the triumvirate is evil. Yuuzhan Vong coral seeds in people? Using Killiks to control people? That sounds fairly evil.”

Sabre leaned forward, grinning. “I have a theory about that.”

“Oh?” Ker leaned back. He’d been taught classical interrogation tactics. The person under scrutiny often leaned forward to create a ‘bond’ between the two individuals, as if they were imparting some kind of secret upon the other. As if they were friends. Ker wasn’t going to fall for something like that.

“Let’s assume you decided the Mods or the Senate were dangerous. You discover something that is impossible to prove, but true, and then realise that the only way to fix this is another needless civil war,” said Sabre.

“So you create a droid army based on Thrawn McEwok?”

“Who knows?” said Sabre. “A droid army can be programmed to stun individuals, rather than kill. It’s the least dangerous alternative. And it prevents any lasting issues between the people who have to fight – droids did it, so hate them, not each other.”

“Maybe,” said Ker, straining his mental processes to follow those of Sabre. “And the brain control and so forth are obviously the most sane ways to depose someone dangerous. Because resistance is minimal – as well as the violence.” When Ker looked at it that way, it did make sense, after a fashion.

“But what about Souderwan? Kidnapping him doesn’t seem a way to stay low-key or act innocent.” Ker had only recently heard about this, but then he remembered another fact and answered his own question. “Ah. Rebecca_Daniels

“Exactly.”

“She tried to kidnap Souderwan shortly after anyway. Regardless of the coral seeding. So she may have blew the lid on the entire plan, and made it seem like the triumvirate are the actual bad guys.” Ker narrowed his eyes. “So what you’re saying is – what are you saying?”

“I’m saying that it’s time we started looking at the reasons why they’re out to conquer the EUC.”

“Sabre,” said Ker, closing his eyes, and preparing himself.

“Yup?”

“Have the triumvirate contacted you?”

Sabre raised an eyebrow. “If they had, I would have turned them in.”

Now Ker was really confused. “Why?”

“Well,” said Sabre, looking uncomfortable. “I’ve actually thought about this, unforgivably for a Corellian.”

Ker nodded, holding onto the tangential train of thought with the skin of his teeth.

“And I reckon that if we need to have a civil war to depose Jello or Sey or Sinre, or maybe Prenn or Despised or Li or Typo or for all I know the Head Admin of the whole of TF.N, then we should,” shrugged Sabre. “It’s something which should be fought for. Freedom, and all that, it should be something we choose. Not something we’re handed. Nobody should have the power to decide that we’re democratic, or not.”

Ker considered that. “So what does this have to do with your stealing back your detective badge?”

“Oh, absolutely nothing,” said Sabre, grinning, and he rolled back, as the door clicked open. A small device popped out of the lock – a hacker key – and Ker saw that Sabre had just successfully tricked him into stalling for enough time for it to open the door. Sabre darted back, slamming the door shut, and using it as a shield. The lock clicked back into place, and Ker shrugged as Sabre ran away.

“You’re letting him go?” came a voice. Ker looked up, and saw a shadowy figure perched on the roof, their voice obviously obscured by some kind of device.

“He has a point, I suppose,” said Ker, slowly.

Shadowy figure shrugged, “Maybe. But he just broke the law.”

“You can break the law and still do the right thing.” He resisted the urge to add. We do.

“So you can. Master_Keralys, don’t forget the meeting,” and at that Shadowy figure darted away, into the dusk, the scar on his face visible for a moment.

Ker stood up, looking into the sun. In a few hours, the elections would be finished at 8pm, and after that, the sun would reach twilight, that strange moment when the moon and sun were both in the sky.

And, after that...

Darkness.

Title: EU Senate Chancellor
Registered: Nov '04

EUC Fanfic: Revelation, by Sinrebirth

The Senate was the most magnificent building in EU City. While not as tall as other firm’s buildings, it nonetheless was the largest. Encompassing the dozens of Senate seats, it had been modelled on a smaller version of the classic Old Republic Senate on faraway Coruscant, itself replaced by the Alliance Senate, and recently the only replica in Krayt’s Empire.

The tall podium which came from the Chancellor’s Office was, some had concluded, the most well defended spot in the city. With a shield generator built into the top of the spire and the base, and another in the Office itself, it was self-sufficient and, if someone managed to knock down the shields with a grenade – something the Chancellor is unlikely to allow brought inside the Senate – then the magnetically shielded armour plating would prevent blaster fire from bringing it down.

It was in this podium that Mod Jello’s presence had been requested by Chancellor Sinre. The two men had met in this particular arena many times before, and fought many a battle for the position of Chancellor. When Jello had risen to the status of Mod, none too long ago, Sinre had retaken the position in two elections against little, well, serious opposition.

The Mod, adorned in his purple and orange Mod robes and a lightsaber hanging from his belt rather than the DL44 that Mods were handed to police the streets, found Sinre in the podium, itself fully extended into the centre of the Senate. Nobody else was here, seemingly. Rather than have his voice amplified, Sinre waved him over, negligently, as if his rank as Chancellor made him somehow more important than the Mod. Jello narrowed his eyes, and decided to come over regardless, preparing his arsenal of cutting remarks in the meantime.

The Senate pod floated him over, and Sinre turned, that sincere smile plastered to his face, voluminous robes concealing his right side. “Jello! Thank you for coming.”

“I don’t see why a private message couldn’t have been sufficient. Nor do I see why you’ve called a full meeting of the Senate for fifteen minutes from now.”

Sinre immediately deflated, his charm reduced to nothing. Jello allowed himself a moment of superiority, allowing it to enter his face and then depart. Sinre spoke, his tone more muted. “There’s something taking place in the Senate, and I wasn’t sure a private message would be able to convey as much.”

Jello folded his arms. “Which is?”

“I have discovered the identity of the mastermind of the Wes Janson Crisis. Fortunately, or unfortunately, depending on your perspective, they – there were three of them - were foolish enough to create a recording, or perhaps practice run, of their declaration. Intelligence has intercepted it.”

Sufficiently irritated by the overdramatic presentation by the ridiculous Chancellor, Jello simply allowed his irritation to crawl into his features, his mental faculties already putting into place a list of suspects. They had already concluded there was a Mod involved, though investigations across three cities hadn’t drawn up any significant leads. “Show me.”

Bowing, the Chancellor gestured with the Force, a switch clicking into place and a hologram emerging above the Podium. Jello prepared himself, mind expecting some kind of revelation. He couldn’t have anticipated this.

It was a speech by Sinre.

And one hell of a speech. At one point decrying the existence of a Sith Order based on Kaan and Traya, and declaring himself the Dark Lord of the Sith. A flicker saw the Chancellor, in the same Sith robes he wore now, Jello noticed, decrying the political instability an election fosters, and abandoning such formalities. Another flicker saw Sinre declaring to the Imperial Knights the formation of a vast Sith Empire over the City, and that dissent would be crushed without remorse.

Declaring himself Sith Emperor.

It flared out, and Jello, simultaneously in awe and horror at this madman standing a few feet away, very nearly allowed Sinre, gesturing his left hand, to take his lightsaber from his belt. Snapping his hand up, Jello caught the blade, thumbing it as he leaned forward to follow through. When Sinre flicked his hand again, and the pods repulsorlift cut out, he took that momentum from stepping forward and leapt, into the Chancellor’s podium.

Another gesture from the Sith Emperor saw the shield, deadlocked, snap on, leaving Jello and Sinre trapped inside the egg-shaped dome of light. A lightwhip was already in flicking forward from his right hand, six strands, equal parts light, metal and leather grasping like teeth for Jello even as his boots hit the platform, the two standing in the outer ring of the tight-fitting podium.

“You’re insane!”

Jello cut with his blade, expertly catching the two energy strands around his blade and chipping away at the other three strands, even as he realised that one strand hadn’t been aimed at him. The one leather one around Sinre’s own wrist, his free hand telekinetically moving the strand at his direction. Before Sinre yanked at his whip and the lightsaber with his hand, Jello gathered the Force and pushed out, intending to slam Sinre into the shields and incinerate him.

Sinre simply wagged a finger, and the metal strands looped onto the handrail of the podium. Hanging on, he simply jerked back and his arm held him on. Given another moment, Jello twisted his blade to sever the lightwhip at the core, chopping a chunk away from it even as Sinre dropped a blaster into his left hand and fired.

Jello simply side-stepped, the blaster bolt rebounding off the central portion of the podium and towards the shields. Even as he did so, he nimbly gestured, batting the blaster from Sinre’s hand into the shield. He knew that he could best Sinre in a lightsaber fight, so left the lightsaber on his belt for the moment.

The bolt reflected back off the shield, towards Jello, and his lightsaber came back up and sent it at Sinre as he stepped back around to advance. The Chancellor had a emerald-bladed shoto in his left hand, suddenly – not the hilt hanging on his belt, Jello realised – and deflected the bolt into the controls for the shields.

It deactivated, and Sinre, dropping the fragments of his lightwhip, gestured as Jello went to follow him, jumping over Jello towards the pods which were a leap away. A bolt of lightning snapped from his fingertips as he flew over, looking down and obviously preparing a flip down into a pod, as Sinre locked and threw his shoto – his moves obviously boosted with speed. Jello negligently raised his lightsaber, caught the lightning, and gestured his hand to draw the shoto to him, bringing his lightsaber back around to cut it apart. No sense leaving weapons around for him to use later.

Then danger rang around him, and Jello leapt back, after Sinre, as the shoto – grenade, Jello realised - exploded.

A fireball consumed the Mod, even as Sinre landed on the edge of the pod and snapped the lightsaber off his belt, igniting a crimson blade. Jello, his robe alight and his hair singed, landed beside him, twisting in mid-air so the two landed facing each other on the narrow edge of the pod, both balanced on the rail around it.

Sinre lashed out even as Jello, coughing and his skin blackened, his eardrums burst, brought his blue blade up to deflect the blow aside. Sinre headbutted him, and then dropped down, slashing the other way beneath Jello’s riposte. Jello, half-burnt, and half-stunned, simply fell back from the headbutt, the lightsaber cut slicing into his stomach but simply carving a crease which was easily survivable.

The fall, suddenly accelerated by Sinre’s push with the Force, was not necessarily so.

Jello managed to get his wits around him, realising a mere few seconds had passed since the hologram had finished, and landed on his feet, regaining his poise. Initially on his feet, that is. He glanced up from his ungainly fall, having felt additional use of the Force. Rolling back, the Senate pod Sinre had thrown slammed into the ground, and Jello’s senses told him Sinre had leapt off it in the last moment. Even with all these injuries, and a damnably fast opponent, Jello had his immense skills with a lightsaber, and wasn’t finished.

He rolled again as Sinre hacked down, coming up on his feet and falling into a furious defensive flurry as Sinre doggedly followed him into the tunnel which allowed spectators to funnel into the Senate hall. Sinre’s blows were fast but sloppy, switching between Djem So and Vaapad, cutting into the walls, while Jello’s were minimalistic Niman and Makashi, him starting to get his wits about him, but still on the defensive. All he needed was one moment, which he imagined he would have when he entered the open area after the tunnel.

Before Jello’s mind managed to completely click on that point, the Chancellor gestured his hand, shoving out with the Force a final time as they left the tunnel, shoving Jello away into the far wall. Standing in the tunnel, the Sith Emperor watched as Jello, still groggy, still burnt, and still bleeding from half a dozen cuts, flicked out his comlink from where he sat, calling Sey.

It was dead – jammed.

The Chancellor – Jello refused to refer to him as Sith Emperor – simply smiled. Jello took that long moment to stand, his wits finally his once more. Where were the Senate Guards under DarthUncle? The Royal Guards under emperorgerner? Surely there was a single Senator in this building?

His senses were cast out, and he discovered nothing. Nobody. He pushed them out further, to find someone else in the firms around the Senate, to warn them, and a vast hand of darkness sought to engulf him.

Sinre, unharmed and not in the least bit fazed by their duel thus far, had his hand out, using the Force to limit the Mod’s use of the Force. Jello, fighting off burns, cuts and bruises, half-deaf, was in no shape to fight this man to the death. Jello expected Sinre, however, knew that his opponent would best him in an environment he had little control over. The large space gave Jello the space to move and weave – something to use to his advantage, to escape.

Impasse.

“This is over, Chancellor. I’ll escape, and there is no way Kahn or Dade will let you get away with this.” Jello allowed his confidence to seep through, adopting a sneer as he stood. He managed not to shake from the pain, and was pleased with himself.

Sinre simply turned away.

“You are a fool, Jello. This is already over.”

Jello felt, suddenly, the presences of many, many more Sith fill his senses. They were all over the Senate. Most were above him, and advancing down. Sinre had been stalling. Stabbing his lightsaber into the ground, Jello carved himself a circle even as the first black cloaked foes started to come into sight.

Casting a glance back up, down the tunnel, Jello saw Sinre, the man who would be known as Sith Emperor by simply not losing, deactivate his crimson blade. Shadow engulfed him, and Sinre vanished into his cloak. Gone.

Jello nodded to himself. “This isn’t over.”

He dropped down another level, knowing his escape would effectively put him out of the scene for the minutes Sinre needed to secure his control as the Senators began rolling in.

The Sith Empire was born.

---

Elsewhere in the city, a trio of individuals, one Shadow, two Mod, met in the disused Rebellion Secret Base. The post office had been relocated, and now the triumvirate had moved in to secure it.

The Shadow had a long history with EU City, longer than that of the other two Mods. Longer even than Sinre, surprisingly. He had been Chancellor, some time ago, and marginalised by the current one, pushed into the political shadows, and made into a reporter – nothing more or less. A reporter. No longer a viable political choice, and never to be one again. His bitterness had become bile given form, and now there were more lines than ever he was willing to cross to bring down the man.

It had been him, during the second EUC Civil War, who had worked out that Sinre was connecting dots to form an Empire. While the Imperial Court under Jello and the Rebellion under Prenn fought over the hearts and minds of the city, Sinre had been quietly convincing firms to declare their neutrality, or to remain apart entirely of the conflict. The Twilight Templars had kept a keen eye on Sinre, and in communications between him and the Kage of the Order – MarcusDade at the time – the Shadow had decided to sit back and forge a resistance to this new and more calculating enemy.

The Shadow was a Sith Lord, in fact, you could say he was one of the founders of the new Sith, and the two other Mods were primarily a Jedi and an Imperial Knight. But now, they were all allies in an endeavour to defeat the tyranny that Sinre represented. It was the Shadow – TypoCelchu – who had engineered the use of coral seeds, and the use of the Killiks to control members of the city, forging them into a weapon. The creation of the Ewok battle droid army had been facilitated by him.

The other Mods had worked beside him, creating a trio with the influence to keep these things secret, and arm the forces they’d been preparing. Stepping out of the shadows around the disused firm came s65horsey – Sey – having just recovered from wounds she’d taken to conceal her role in the Wes Janson crisis.

Her Mod robes flowed, and she folded her arms. “So you’re saying Keralys let Sabre go, and steal the detective badge?”

“He had a fair point,” said Keralys as he stepped out of the shadows himself. “We shouldn’t choose to hand them democracy. The coral seeds and the Killiks were good ideas, for a peaceful transition. But they were far too easy to mis-use.”

“Rebecca_Daniels turned into a great threat and misused the Ewok droid army and the seeds, yes, we know, to create a prank that was half-fun, half-war. Yes, we know,” said Sey irritably. “We’ve fixed the links to us now, and nobody remembers that we kidnapped them.”

Typo broke in, the scar on his face – having been wounded during his fight with Trimaj – stretching with his lips movement. “It doesn’t matter now. We’ve failed to stop the Sith from convalescing around Sinre. The election efforts by Despised1 and Darth_Wanderguard may have been entirely separate to Sinre’s plans, but they provided a lightning rod of attention.”

“Just like Caedus did to Krayt’s order, almost a century ago,” mused Ker.

“And now Sinre has won the election, and his power over the Sith is consolidated, he has all the power he requires to takeover,” hissed Typo.

Ker narrowed his eyes. “We won’t give up, either way.”

“Definitely,” said Sey. “We have to fight a war, now. If we don’t, he’ll conquer EU City and there’s nothing to stop him capturing other cities after this.” It was an indication of how deranged Sinre was – his lover in the city had picked the opposite side to him.

Typo paused. “We’re going to get a lot of flak for what we’ve done.”

“They’ll understand,” said Sey. “Adalia isn’t going to give up, and I doubt the Templars and Jedi will either. We have all we need to fight a war.”

“Against a Sith Army,” mused Ker. “And we’re still not sure which way the Imperial Knights will go. Or the Church of Waru. Or the -”

“It’s too late now,” said Typo, drawing his lightsaber from his belt. “We need to organise, quickly. Find a new base, prepare a refugee centre. Sinre isn’t going to let the Church be a haven of resistance again.”

“Then we’d best get moving, if the Senate has been convened,” said Ker, igniting his blade. Sey did the same, both of the Mods drawing their blasters. “We have a war to fight.”

And at that, they charged out of their first base, towards the centre of the City.

The Third EUC Civil War had just begun.
