20.Xanatos

For a young reader's book, this was a pretty interesting villain. A former apprentice of Qui-Gon's who turns against him, he's the perfect foil for Obi-Wan and makes story of Master and Padawan all the more interesting. Also, I don't think you can get more Greek tragedy out of the story of Xanatos. His Master, his adopted father, kills his real father, causing Xanatos to abandon the Jedi. His father's ring falls from his hand into the fire, but Xanatos removes it and places the burning metal against his cheek, giving himself a scar to forever remember the treachery of the Jedi. Now that's some good conflict.

19.4-LOM

He was uncredited in ESB right? The droid that could feel the Force. Makes it that much better when Fett is the one to destroy his verbobrain, removing his personality and remaking him as a remorseless killer.

18.Kardue'sai'Malloc

Daniel Keys Moran is the man.

17.Ozrei N'takkilomandrife

I seriously don't think we've had a more cold-hearted killer than Knife. The melting of his heart in the last issue may have been the result of a rushed ending to the Marvel storyline, but Solo helping his wounded enemy is priceless.

16.Sedriss

Somehow a character made for the sole purpose of being super thug number one, actually works.

15.Kir Kanos

C'mon Stradley, you know you want to bring this guy back, and hopefully with a better artist.

14.Hardin

Would've picked Darovit if he wasn't so damn irritating. The cousin of Zannah, the ultimate cynic who derides Darovit's dream to become a heroic Jedi, is the one who becomes a true Jedi at the end.

13.Antinnis Tremayne

What 4dot said.

12.Nom Anor

He can't be dead! Noooo!

11.Quinlan Vos

For all his flip flopping, he still manages to captivate our attention

10.Jacen Solo

9.Anakin Solo

8.Ulic Qel-Droma

7.Lumiya/Shira Brie

6.Darca Nyl

5.Darth Bane

4.Jaina Solo

Jaina's always been more interesting than her brothers.

3.Borsk Fey'lya

2.Soontir Fel

1.Adalric Brandl

Even with only two short stories and a couple of minor references, he remains my favorite EU spawned character.

10.Boba Fett

Even though I would love nothing better than for him to die in the lamest way imaginable during Legacy, the rest of the EU makes Fett into a great and fascinating character.

9.Grievous

Even though I am certain the new TV series will muck up his backstory, as of right now, the development of Grievous into a tragic hero of his people is incredible.

8.Obi-Wan Kenobi

There's just no end to what the EU has done for Kenobi.

7.C-3PO

From warrior to coward, from sneak thief to honest joe, from realist to time traveler, the EU does an amazing job with old goldenrod.

6.Anakin Skywalker

Although Ani does seem to fall to the dark side on more than one occasion. whistling

5.Han Solo

The man with the plan

4.Leia Organa

Although there seems to be a lot of mishandled Leia stories, you can't ignore how well the EU has developed Leia into one badass mother.

3.Biggs Darklighter

The movie didn't explain much, but the EU has made Darklighter one to be admired.

2.Wedge Antilles

He drove a huge arc of successful starfighter books, and is now possibly the most interesting person in Legacy.

1.Dooku

The deviousness of Dooku is much better felt in the EU.

I'm confused-- is the "Top Developed" list "Top Ten Debuting in the Movies but Developed in the EU" or "Top Ten Best Developed Characters From Either"?

I really kind of ignored the entire Top 100 thing, because I didn't really know how it was done and frankly, I was quite busy. I'll chime in and spout off some stuff to be my top Characters. wink

1. Mara Jade - Seemingly loathed by a large enough amount of people here, my EU start point was TTT all those years ago. People can talk about how Mara was annoying, how she was poorly written, how TTT gets too much credit.....but my memories of my friends and I at age 14 (Or thereabouts) reading, waiting/theorizing/debating, reading, waiting/theorizing/debating, reading, and finally talking about the trilogy in it's entirety are absolutely some of the best moments I've had in my EU fandom career. Oh, why Mara Jade? Because in Order we talked about Mara Jade, Mara Jade, Thrawn, and C'Boath. Mara was extremely interesting to us and (WARNING: Oft Repeated Cliche Approaching) went on to become as close to a big Fourth as you can get.

2. Jacen Solo - As long as I've been on this board, half of the posts have been about Jacen Solo. The once good little kid (controversially) turned out to be everyone's favorite person to bash in the early NJO to controvery by association with Vergere to "Hmmm, there is some hope for him" by the end of NJO to the "WTF!?!?!?! He's acting a little Shady of DNT" to the very polarizing unreasonable Dark Lord that we have seen in LoTF. Admittedly there is a bit of a jump in personality from series to series but I've been rereading NJO (As well as a few YJK things) and I actually feel there is a pretty reasonable progression of his character to what it is now. To cause such rabid debates in the Lit forum for years requires a special kind of character....

3. Revan - Yeah, I'm a KoToR I fanboy......but Revan is a fantastic character. Vested "Personal" interest by those that "Were him" when they played the game - Check. "I am your father" class twist? - Check Story that is currently up to a LOT of interpretation? - Check. Outrage that a KoToR III hasn't come out yet to let us know what he was up to? - Check Likely a big reason that we have a length and awesome new comic series that in itself is loaded with great original characters? - Check Most importantly, a character that likely drew additional fans into the EU as a whole? - Check. Yup. He's one of the great ones.

4. Cade Skywalker - Many people thought Legacy was going to be an unoriginal rehash of the OT. Others are sick of the Superhero or Tragic Hero type Jedi Stories. Legacy #1 showed us a whiny young Skywalker kid (Imagine that!) that escaped death and used some immense new powers to heal his Master. Yawn. Right? Issue 2 brings us a grungy looking outlaw that wasn't trying to save the Jedi and wasn't in search of Unlimited power. Very fresh and very well written to this point.

5. Vergere - Not as long lived on screen as #2, we have another very controversial character. She was a Riddle wrapped inside a mystery, wrapped inside an enigmatic little bizarre creature. As more EU comes out we see more bits and pieces of her story.....and we STILL don't know the truth behind it. Of course, maybe I don't really think she deserves the 5 spot, after all.....Everything that I tell you is a lie.

6. Anakin Solo - This ship has caused quite a stir in the EU as of.....oh wait. No...the boy. Ok. The Next Luke Skywalker has been dead for 7 years Earth time and about (12?) years in the current story arc. Done. Done Done. No? There are constant threads suggesting ways that Anakin might still be alive? A character that some readers would likely turn a blind eye to if continuity problems if he were to just walk through the door and say "Hey guys! Sorry It took me so long to reassemble my burning ashes. By the way, I really wish you hadn't done that. It made things trickier when you burned my Jedi healing Tranced corpse to ashes" is influential and quite good indeed.

7. Quinlon Vos - A very long and winding tale of tragedy (memory loss), falling, "redemption", and finally finding peace.....Vos was the "Cool" Jedi and in my mind the easiest PT Era Jedi for readers to empathize with. He has actual emotions, he struggles with being put into situations where he must make some "Grey" ethical decisions, and he has some rockin hair. Khaleen being tethered to Vos was an added bonus. IMO, an underworld "hero" that wasn't really good at many things (Pickpocketing aside), couldn't call on a legion of Rodian Minions, didn't seem to own anything but the (Rather limited amount of) clothing that she wore, and had NOTHING going for her was something fairly new in Star Wars.

8. Jagged Fel - I think I've seen him appear on the lists of some others here, which I wasn't sure I would. The fact that he entered the picture as a pretty "Wooden" character, is insensitive to the force, and was somewhat cursed by virtue of seemingly being inserted to create a love interest conundrum for Jaina Solo, he has really developed. Exiled by his people, he is essentially a nobody that managed to make his way off Tenupe and headed straight to warn those that were instrumental in destroying his life that someone may be coming to kill them shows him off as a untarnished "Good" guy. Forget Roan Fel.....when Jagged went into a place "Saturated in Dark Side Energies" to face off against a murderous force using crazy bugslut we found out which Fel's baddassery really knows no bounds.

9. Zayne Carrick - An extremely likable character that shoots farther up this list every passing issue. Before there was so much established EU, I pictured Jedi to be Mages that did not have an established Order and wandered around helping out where they could. Even on the run, as an outcast, Zayne has become as much of a Jedi in spirit as any we have seen.....and he's done it despite allegedly being limited in terms of force ability...not to mention the Jedi Masters that want to kill him and the bounty hunters that track him. KoToR #6 where Zayne sent the message that his old Masters had a death mark just like him is over talked about as the moment he changed. To me, the end of KoToR #5 was the turning point. "If that is the way you think, it is more than your skills that are keeping you from being a Jedi." - Jarael. I felt that was a powerful moment. His risking his life by dangling from a speeder to try to help Ranna Tey.......another action that certainly meant risking his life.....put it over the top.

10. Ben Skywalker - Quite possibly the most loathed character with the last name Skywalker, I personally have loved Ben's arcs in LoTF. Anakin Solo may have been a little too "Uber-Jedi" at such a young age. Ben seems more in line with what I would expect a teenage Jedi to be like....especially one with a Master that was about to make the Plunge. Jacen's actions pre-Lumiya were suspect at best. Many people seem to think his "Arguments" are foolish, but many of them are the same types of somewhat naive but clever things you would hear from a bright 14 year old.

11. Thrawn - When Thrawn came into play, my young mind found him enormously interesting. "Whoa, he can use art to tell enough about cultures to know how to kill them. He's awesome!" I'm a tad older and realize there is a certain amount of ridiculousness to that, but we ARE talking about a fictional universe where people move rocks with their mind. I enjoyed Thrawn's depictions of him actually using creative tactics in his battle plans. Too often in the EU we get "Fleet A arrived with thousands of trails of blue efflux. Fleet B moved to engage them. Fleet A launched all proton torpedos, catching Fleet B unprepared. Ships blow up. The Admiral is lauded for his genius."

12. "Uncle" Villie - Ok, ok, he's not the pinnacle of EU literature but one thing is for sure.....every appearance by Villie made me laugh (well...maybe not Emissaries to Malastare). Every appearance by Villie still makes me laugh when I go back and read it. I tend to enjoy the more puzzling and deep characters in Star Wars EU, but I can stand to chuckle now and then. "Hey! You wound Villie! Villie tell the truth two, maybe three times." Snicker. He's Hokay in my book.

13. Fey'yla - After overthrowing the Emperor and the formation of the New Republic, it would be expected that all of the new leaders would be all happy and agree on everything and have no hidden agendas. There has to be that self serving influential sentient to rock the boat a bit. The PT era showed us a Senate that was soooooooo rotten and corrupt, but we were never really handed a strong "Bad Guy" politician that wasn't a Sith Lord trying to take over the Galaxy. There were a few here and there that we were told should not be trusted......but in Fey'La we got to see one in action.

14. Nom Anor - I really enjoyed Nom Anor. The non shamed vong were generally depicted as fairly homogenous in viewpoint. Millions of nameless Vong marched towards death in battle all serving their Gods and the greatest of the Vong or showed their fealty by accepting pain. They had a propensity to be truthful when reporting their failures or successes. Anor was a foil to the status quo. He wasn't concerned about the "Blessed Release in worthy battles, he was annoyed by having to do things like sit in Tsavong Lah's torture chair, and most importantly he was willing to flip sides at the slightest chance of gaining more for himself. His incessant scheming made him exciting and overall enjoyable to read.

15. Corran Horn - We don't get to see fully developed personalities from some of the "Secondary" Jedi all that often. Frankly, Masters like Kenth, Cighal, Solusar, and even Saba don't have the same book presence (Don't get me wrong, I love Saba) due largely in part to not having a book devoted to their adventures. Despite the horrifying "Take my ball and go home" Kyp/Corran shouting matches, Corran is portrayed as the common sense Jedi. He is a reasonable non SkySolo voice that is just very likable.

16. Talon Kardde - I love scoundrals....and Kardde is pretty darn cool. Putting a true one back into the mix after Lando and Han went "Respectable" was nice. The smuggler's alliance sub plot in TTT was very appealing to me as a reader.

Running out of time, so I'm going to go short on the explanations....

17. "The Gryph" - Just a great sidekick. As much as I like Wayne, Gryph was a big part of "Putting him on the map."

18. Jaina Solo - Very mishandled thus far, Jaina is a good character waiting to break out. It seemed they were dumping the "I like boyz routine"....but it plays too large of a part in her arcs. Maybe she is the IWOD......but let her be "The Sword of the Jedi" first. The Trickster stuff in mid-NJO was one thing I thought was pretty well done.

19. Tholme - I really just liked Tholme.

20. Assajj Ventress - Yeah yeah, I know that the "Bald, Pale Skinned, angry dominatrix female" thing was a cliche and a put off to some, but she did have depth of character and a certain presence that Aurra Sing, Kadrian(?), Skor, and even Sora Bulq did not have.
