Got #26 today, but haven't had a chance to read it yet, so with an act of great self-control, I'm studiously ignoring Nicki's spoilery post. tongue But way to go, Cade Brigade! Looking good over in the Feud! dancing

TNPredsFan posted:
- Our man Cade is scaring me with his "the ways of the Force are a tool" reasoning. We saw this same reasoning in the post-NJO novels, and things didn't turn out well.

That's true. But I had a thought about why this situation might be different. thinking I think the major difference here is that the DNT-era Jedi were experimenting with the Vergere-esque "there is no Dark Side" approach while still attempting to play by Jedi rules. I'm not sure that there's a difference between what Cade is doing and, for example, what Mara did when she used Force lightning against whichever-bughugger-it-was, but, unlike the members of Luke's order, Cade is not trying to be a Jedi. The question, I guess, is if it will WORK or if it's even possible to play both sides of the Force...

I think this next part is general enough not to be spoilery: Personally, I've never had a problem with the Force-as-a-tool idea. The nature of the Force (Entity vs. Energizer battery) has been debated forever, and I've never seen an argument strong enough to make me believe that either view was the right one.

This issue with Cade is that he has to sprout the yellow eyes, which makes what he's doing more...what's the word? intrinsic and dangerous than simply wielding a tool.

I really liked his assertion that he was neither a Jedi nor a Sith. (Even though I do hope he eventually grows up to be one of the good guys.) He's learning to stand for something and he knows what he's NOT. I guess what he needs to figure out next is what he IS.

Personally, I've always thought the Force was both simultaneously. In that sense, the Force has always reminded me strongly of Ma'at. In ancient Egypt, Ma'at was both a goddess and a concept. The concept of Ma'at was the fundamental order of the universe that kept chaos at bay, and truth in its purest form. The goddess Ma'at was the personification of the concept, she who created order out of chaos in the first place. Her primary duty was to prevent the return of chaos; she also judged the hearts of the dead, thus sealing their final fate. It was by invoking Ma'at the goddess and her power that the Pharaoh upheld justice and law, thus keeping Ma'at the concept in balance. I see the Force as being very similar to Ma'at, with the Jedi in the position of Pharaoh, both serving the will of the Force/Ma'at as an entity and keeping the Force/Ma'at in balance as a concept.

That's your tangent for the day. tongue

Having now read #26, I'm really intrigued all the way around. Everyone's made good points. I see why Cade wants to assassinate Krayt; I see why the Jedi don't. I see why Shado would think Cade dark and dangerous; I see why Cade believes he can walk both paths and stay under control. I don't know who's more right in either conflict, but I don't believe anyone so far is in full possession of either the truth or a moral high ground. I think it's going to be really fascinating to watch this play out.

I have seen the concept of a strong Force-wielder consciously using both light and dark techniques simply as tools while disavowing loyalty to either the Jedi or Sith way in fanfic (and it's always been an interesting philosophical exploration); I'm unsure whether I've seen it in profic before. As Nicki pointed out, we've seen the Jedi use dark side techniques before and it wasn't a real smart move. But as Traci says, in those instances they were using Vergere's "there is no dark side" philosophy, as well as trying to hold to the Jedi way. Cade is very deliberately using dark side techniques without denying that they are of the dark side, nor is he trying to be a Jedi. Definitely a difference there.

Of course, even if Cade can use both and keep his control, he's setting himself up as the ultimate moral authority, and that's a slippery, slippery road. I'm unconvinced that it would be a safe course even for someone with both great power and centuries worth of wisdom and experience like Yoda; how much more dangerous it must be for someone like Cade who's young, emotionally unstable, and addicted to strong hallucinogens.

I like Azlyn more and more. Her inner conflict is a fun addition to the conflicts already abounding in this story. grin

Poor Jariah. I agree with Nicki; he's carrying one heck of an emotional burden here, no matter what his father was like. I'm impressed, though, that Jariah grew up to be as good as he is when his greatest influences were apparently his father and Rav.

I know we don't have official confirmation of Marasiah's heritage (unless I've missed a rather important announcement somewhere along the line tongue ), but she sure does look like a descendant of Jaina and Jag to me.

I wondered the same thing about that Arkanian girl, Nicki. Veeerry interesting. thinking

Wonderful issue as always, John and Jan! grin

I like flawed characters because they can make a mistake and deal with it. For example, when Cade sleeps with Darth Talon, he has to apologize to Blue. I wonder how would Luke explain a similar situation to Mara. I don't think he could, because a) he's too "perfect" a character to cheat on his wife, and b) Mara would kill him. In the case of Blue, she knows Cade is flawed, so when he screws up, its not the end of the universe. When a "good" character sits and angsts over right and wrong for too long, I start to lose interest. At a certain point, a decision has to get made and then there are consequences. In Cade's case, he doesn't always make the right decisions, so he has more consequences pop up in his life that tend to make for more interesting reading than a mostly perfect character who can't let go of their guilt/angst over making one bad choice.

Interesting. thinking

You could make a distinction between "flawed" and "damaged." In my sense, flawed characters are those who have weaknesses. They can control their urges or their desires to some extent, but there will always be that weakness. Luke's weakness is his curiosity and his sense of invulnerability; that's what makes him skim so close to the dark side, especially when he was younger. But Luke was not "damaged." He wasn't nursing some wound that never heals. Anakin was damaged. Cade is damaged.

I like what you said about making the decision and then taking what consequence may come. That fits Cade's attitude, the way he constantly leaps without a net. It's an impulsive, self-destructive behavior.

And Gabri, is there ANYTHING you don't know???? wink

I spoiled myself because I have no idea when I'm going to get this comic. I'm either going to have to have them shipped to me somehow from a dealer or have my mom do it. I'm not even sure if the first one is an option.

I can't wait to get my hands on it though. Sounds like it was really interesting in some parts and a bit what I expected in a few others.

Congrats Cade Brigade!!!!

I can't wait to see that Cade banner up!!!

I used the TFAW.com subscription service for several months before I moved close enough to a comic book store. I think Midtown Comics also has a mail-based subscription service.
