RE: Solo29's Art - Updated Dec. 22nd - Leia on Echo Base (Replies up Jan 22nd)

I have something quick to share with you all tonight. I'm currently illustrating a long AU fan fic entitled, "My Mother." I don't want to give away too many details, but it's centered around the possibility of Padme surviving and coping to a galaxy where her son and daughter are fully grown. Anyway, this depicts Padme sleeping with Leia looking on in the background.
Once again, I'm struggling with the coloring in Photoshop and just opted for a more "graphic" feel when I got frustrated. As usual, tips and critiques are welcomed!

Oh, wow...that's so beautiful... The emotion in this is so powerful--it really hit after I'd looked at it for a moment or two; just the apparent peace of Padme's sleep vs. the rather confused and bewildered look on Leia's face... Both likenesses are wonderful, and the rather stark surroundings emphasizes the emotion. I love this, Han!

Well, that is an atmospheric picture! One look at it and you know it's there to tell a story. Really good use of shadow and negative space. I love how you've rendered Padme's face.
Excellent!

Wow-- extremely relatable!
Most of my focus centered around Leia in the back. The shadowing you gave it gave the impression that she doesn't want to burst her mom's peaceful bubble; she wants to confess something that would distress mom.
Haven't we all been in that position-- in some incarnation-- before? lol

I like your style of the dark shadowing, and good likenesses of Leia and padme I can see this being in a book.

FettFan79 said that he could see this in a book, and I agree wholeheartedly, so that tells you right there you did an excellent job on illustrating a scene from this fanfic you mentioned. I'm not sure if what I see is the correct interpretation, but Padme looks rather troubled in her sleep, leading me to believe that perhaps this reunion has been more difficult rather than joyous. Leia looking onward, but from a distance only furthers that conclusion for me (Like she's not sure how to handle or what to make of the situation before her.) Or I could quite possibly be entirely wrong about this altogether. The point is, this picture gets me thinking of what it could possibly mean. Soits is very correct; there is plenty of atmosphere here to pick up on.
Definately a great likeness of both characters - you've never seemed to suffer any problems there as far as I know. One thing that often proves to be difficult is trying to retain the likeness of a character when they are drawn from a distance (Leia in this case), but she is fully recognizable. Wonderful work.

Wow, it's been awhile. Things are finally winding down at school and I'm just about done with all of the work that's going into zines, so I have some free time to update this thread.
First of all, thank you to all who dropped by and commented on my last piece! I truly do appreciate the encouragement and the wonderful critiques. Thanks again!
I wanted to share a WIP that I'm working on as my final assignment in my Illustration Studio class. It's not really Star Wars, but it does have some elements from the films included. It's in the sketch phase at the moment(I have a critique on it tomorrow) but it's eventually going to be an oil painting for the final. Here is a description from the assignment sheet our prof handed to us:
Illustrate and design an "eye-catching" image for the Tribeca Cult Film Festival. This is an actual festival except the cult part. The flavor of a big time film fest is important. Imagery should reflect the "cult" aspect. Go for either straight forward or let loose with kitchy, goofy and fun approach. You are restricted only in the use of color/only B&W and one other color!
And this is the piece I've come up with focusing in the sci-fi genre:
Film Fest Poster Sketch
Enjoy and critiques are welcomed!

Whee-Haaa!! This looks just awesome, Han!! Wow--Deckerd from "Blade Runner," Kirk from "Star Trek" (love that pose, btw!) and our favorite farmboy-turned-galactic hero Luke Skywalker! Too cool!! I love that you included Deckerd--I love "Blade Runner" (talk about a cult sci-fi film!)--all of these characters are definitely in the cult category! Great composition (the little flying saucers up there are great!!)--wonderful shading, gorgeous likenesses--all-around a fabulous piece!
OOO!! I cannot wait to see this all painted and done! Promise you'll take a pic and show it to us here! **puppy-dog-begging-eyes** You'll get a wonderful grade on this, I'm certain!

Wow this looks great! I really like that it has Kirk and Bladerunner in the top large focus with Luke in the bottom with lightsaber lit. And the flying saucers in the backtop are a nice touch. Bravo!
The only critique I could give is that I seem to be seeing ghost images in the background, like portions that weren't completely erased. Really would like to see this thing with color.

Thanks, Deb! It always means a lot when you drop by and give such wonderful critiques! The critique in class also went really well. He recommended I change a few things around with Luke(shrink him, move him back a big so that he's not resting on the edge of the picture plane and change the angle of his lightsaber), but other than that, I'm good to go!
Thanks for the wonderful comments, Mitth! The ghost image you see is indeed an earlier drawing of Kirk I needed to erase. I didn't bother with cleaning it up since this is just a sketch(about half size the final piece) and the final transfer will get rid of that anyway.

This is a geeky criticism, but your picture seems to be reversed. Kirk's Starfleet badge should be on his left-hand-side, not his right, and the badge itself needs to be mirrored so its left downward pointy-bit trails lower than the right downward pointy-bit. I get that you probably mirrored Kirk to give the composition a nice flow, but geeks will notice if you don't get the badge right. Apart from that, nice composition.

Err, not sure where Princess Leia falls into my latest composition, but just a reminder that we only accept constructive criticism in the Fan Art forum. Negative and random comments just to excite, annoy or rip apart the artist will not be tolerated. Please review the critique guidelines in the rules index for more information and welcome!
soits: Yup, you got me. I did indeed flip the image of Kirk to fit it into the composition. I didn't think anyone would catch it(we don't really have any major sci-fi geeks or Star Trek fans in my class) but I see I was wrong. I only have the pencil laid in on the final right now, so it'll be an easy fix. Thanks for dropping by and for the critique!
