Hey, thought I'd throw this out for everyone who loves drawing, especially with pencils, charcoal, etc., so here goes:

Some things I've learned since I've been drawing portraits. I use a wide range of different leads, from 2B to 9B., and I acquired a really good electric eraser-it's mostly for graphic design/drafting, but i use it when i don't want ANY pencil marks-and it doesn't destroy your paper!

protect your paper-you want to have some art that lasts a while? DON'T USE YOUR FINGERS!! Trust me, I've used my fingers for blending, smearing, etc., and over time, the paper begins to turn a nasty yellow-I use a plain old piece of Kleenex-or tortillion-you get so much better results, and you don't have to clean your hand-so on that note: when drawing, keep a sheet of paper between your hand and the art-it prevents the risk on unwanted smudging, and just a bit of charcoal or pencil from your hand in the wrong place can ruin a piece of art.

and when you're all done, get a spray/fixative, which can be found at any art or hobby store, and spray it on the finished work--this will "set" the media you're using so it doesn't get smudged or smeared by accident.

that's just some of the things I've learned that's helped me out a great deal, so hope this helps some

Hello, fdginterceptor, and thanks so much for sharing your artistic wisdom! I employ most of those techniques myself, and they're all wonderful advice--I'll have to look into the electric eraser--it sounds intriguing (most especially if it "doesn't destroy your paper!")! Thank you again--and could we cajole you into sharing some of your art with us here in the forum? We always love to have new folks join us here, so feel free to start a thread for your work. We'll look forward to it! grin

I just want to give you all a heads up that it's time for me to move on from moderating the Fan Art forum. I'm burned out between school and work and I don't have the time to dedicate to the forum like I used to. I will by no means be leaving the forum, so I'll still be around to pest the lot of you. tongue

Anyway, expect a replacement to be announced within the coming weeks. happy

I've posted a few of my drawings on the "volunteer thread"--i'll be the guy at the very bottom-just some things i've done recently. But I've got several more, including portraits of Anjelina Jolie, Vin Diesel, Johnny Depp, just to name a few. And yes, I am working on Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher, Alec Guiness. Eventually, I'll get around to drawing some characters from Ep. I-III.

As for the electric eraser, I used to have one when I was going to school for drafting. the eraser itself comes in different sizes--the one i have now is pretty good-most arts and craft stores have them-you might even want to check out Office Depot, that sells drafting supplies. The erasers themselves wear down pretty quickly, but for a dollar you can get about 40-50 erasers. Keep in mind these are "refills". The actual eraser ranges from $2.00 (it's crap--pass on those), but you can get a good one for about $10-15.00.

I'll get into another thread about how i draw the portraits, step by step. The electic eraser is great for precise erasing, cleaning up around the drawing, and for fixing mistakes-with virtually no pencil markings left! I'd say the only downside to these things is the clean up. But, if you have a good brush, you can wipe away the eraser debris cleanly and without ruining your picture.

BAAAAAAAHHHH!! Whatever will we do without you, Han?! worried I understand, though: you've been soooooo busy with school and work and RL--we've been missing you for a while now! **hugs**

We just want you to know that we'll never, ever forget what a superb Moderator/Manager you've been--your guidance and participation and encouragement have been an inspiration to us all, and we couldn't be more grateful. I sort of hope you get to hand-pick the next Mod, as you know us all and can give that person advice on us... mischief wink Seriously, though--most sincere best wishes with everything else you have going in your life, and we look forward to your being able, with a bit more time, to post more of your own fantastic art in your thread!

Thank you SO MUCH for everything you've done for us here--you are THE BEST!!!

FF

And fgdinterceptor--we'll certainly be looking forward to seeing your portraits! grin

Thanks for all the kind comments everyone! hugs

I've tried to hold on for as long as I could, but I discovered a significant drop in my posting habits and I'm just not around like I used to be or what is required of from a mod. I will get to hand pick the candidates and I will be submitting them to the Mod Squad in a bit. From there, it's up to all of us to decide the best. Thanks again for everything and making this experience great! grin

I hesitated to post anything concerning this, but there's another thread about it over in the JCC, so I decided I should.

For those of you that have been around Fan Art for a while, I'm sure you remember That_Wascally_Droid--he didn't have a thread of his own, but was a regular poster in nearly everyone else's. He passed away on November 2nd, and I just felt our community should know.

Jeff to his friends, he was witty, articulate and always had wonderful comments and feedback for everyone's art. His presence and participation in our forum (and many others he frequented here at TF.N) will be sorely missed.

There is a condolence thread over in The Prequel Trilogy forum here, if you want to leave a remembrance comment.

Godspeed, Wascally_Droid.

sad I had heard of his passing.I knew I had seen him about but couldn't place which forum. Now I look, he did indeed leave a nice comment in my thread. sad

Very sad, especially as he was by all accounts a very nice guy.

Sorry to see you go, That_Wascally_Droid

It is such a tragedy when somebody dies so young. Jeff always had nice things to say to the artists in this forum. He was a really sweet guy.

He will be missed.

This really took me by surprise when I read about it last night. I literally went "What?!" out loud when I saw the thread. I never knew him personally, but I came across him enough to have him feel like a friend. He was a great member of this community and he will be missed. My thoughts and prayers go out to his family. rose

I add my prayers to the list rose

I just want to give this thread a friendly bump.

Perhaps we can start discussing topics about what you would like to see improved in the Fan Art forum or what kind of activities you would like to see?
