Great! I'll see what I can whip up tomorrow in terms of getting this 'Artist of the Month' thing rolling.
As for deviantArt, I have an account and everything, but I just can't get into the community. I think I have a grand total of 4 pieces posted over there and after awhile, I just gave up. The place is just too large. I like the close, tight-knit community we have here much better.

I like DeviantArt for the hosting, but that's about it. I don't do the whole community thing there. Mostly I just log on when I want to look at 'mature' content.
ShrunkenJedi: thanks. I'm thinking of getting a 0.7mm mechanical pencil, a 0.5mm mechanical pencil and a 4B pencil. I don't know if I can get 4B mechanical pencils, but I'd get one if they're available.

Yeah, I know it's big-- I do like the tight-knit feel here, but I opened up an account there to have someplace to put my non-SW fanart
Although my main area of interest is digital art, moosemousse, and I love mechanical pencils for writing (because you never have to sharpen them) I've found them a bit too hard for serious shading. Is that mitigated by the different hardnesses of leads?

Yeah, that's basically what I do over at DA as well--wanted some place to put the other stuff lol I don't do much community posting in the art-social forums, but I am a member of a few non-art SW sites that I do a LOT of time with. I'm spread pretty thin in cyberspace.

Eh, count me in on DA. However, I am a prolific user of DA with a grand total of....200 deviations? XP

Not sure, I don't know if you can get leads other than HB. I use different sizes when I want to do different things though.

They actually do make different hardnesses in the mechanical pencil refills. Staedtler has the wide range available for their pencils. I also find their graphite to be more waxy than other mechanical pencils and it makes it a lot easier to shade.

I used to have a very nice .7 lead that marked very dark and soft. A classmate gave me the pencil, so I don't know where to get the lead XP

Cool, that does sound rare (and no sharpening!). Too bad you don't know where to get the leads anymore

I still have mechanical leads from way back and my father loaded me up with a ton of leads for mechanical pencils that he no longer uses. I'm set for a little while. I too like writing with them and they're nice and portable with no waste.
To get really detailed work in I use a 5H Gretacolor pencil with a super sharpened point, but can usually manage with a softer (HB) mechanical pencil for most things. The 5H seems to repel colored pencil, so there's a bit of working around that.
Pentel still makes mechanical pencil leads. DickBlick.com I've always found them at my local art store.

I have good news! I checked my bank account and found that I have money! I'll be going pencil shopping as soon as I get the chance.

Well, that certainly is interesting. Nothing wrong with that, of course. I guess whatever works best.
And moosemousse, it's great to hear you'll finally be getting those pencils! I wish you the best of luck!
Wow, I'm finally in my last week of school and I'm in the process of putting together my professional portfolio. I'm scared and really excited at the same time. This means that I have one more semester to go before I officially become a professional illustrator!

It does work, but I'm a snobby arteest, only the best will do (as long as I can afford it).
I could winge about my finances all day, but I have a bad feeling that things have gone horribly wrong somewhere, and I have to buy some boots as well.

Oh no
You're just not having the best of luck, are you? Hopefully with the holidays coming up, things will start to brighten up.
