And congrats to you as well, ShrunkenJedi! Well deserved! I know I'm a little late in saying this, but I hope your talk went well. I was never good at the public speaking thing. worried

Thanks, ART2 peace hugs

My talk went well, Han... I've always loved acting, so I'm not a stranger to the getting-up-and-speaking-in-front-of-people thing. Besides, it was on science fiction, how could it go wrong for me? tongue The chapter I was presenting was on metaphor and Star Trek, though, and I'm actually not the biggest trekkie, so it was one of the chapters I actually had to do quite a bit of research on, looking through episode summaries and what I could... my slot was at the end of the day and I took my laptop to revise all day tongue

Glad it went well for you! Even if the subject matter was based around Star Trek. shame_on_you

Hi everyone!
I''m fairly new around here; I just posted my first artwork on here, so now I guess I have to wait for people to look at it grin Haha. There are so many talented artists on here! It's amazing.
And a question: I sometimes get criticized for "copying" pictures rather than coming up with my own original drawings some of the time. What do you people here think about that? Personally, I think working from a picture helps me practice with things like tone, proportions, anatomy... I dunno. Just something I thought I'd bring up.

Personally I think nothing is wrong with using reference pictures as long as you're not tracing them. What do people in art class do to learn? Look at a live model and draw that. Reference pictures are the same idea. It helps learn proportion and anatomy. You can eventually get to a point where you can draw without them, but even experienced artists I know sometimes still look at pictures.

Welcome, Ranil! happy

To answer your question, there is absolutely nothing wrong with using reference while drawing. I'm an illustrator and I have a whole file on my computer of just reference photos that I've either collected on my own or taken myself. It's great to draw out of your head once and a while, but if you really want to get the look of something right, nothing beats having a photograph right there next to you on your drawing table. happy

Man, I'm working on a Darth Caedus image. I was really happy with the sketch, so I thought I would make it my very first photoshop-coloring job. So I bought some drawing pens, inked it and scanned. All the scanner settings were right, I used grayscale, contrast and so on, but my lineart still came out looking shaky up close, with pretty big gaps where you would see the background color. So I was hoping anybody here could tell what I'm doing wrong, or just some general tips on coloring and inking?

Do you have a scan or image of what it looks like currently? I'm not too familiar with inking and coloring, but I'll try to help out where I can.

Just want to give this a bump and try to revive this thing.

I have a question for everyone - is anyone familiar with an art meme? If so, would you be interested in having a Star Wars-based one here in the forum? Let me know. happy

I'd also like to learn what an art meme is. Then, it might gather my interest for the forum, too.
