Hi, I call myself rocketscientist, which is supposed to be funny because I'm not. (a rocketscientist that is) I have an art degree and do some illustrating from time to time. I used to have a costume design business, but closed it when my son was born. I worked in theatre, video and film.

After I discovered these boards I began to try my hand at some scifi art, and I'm having a great time with it. A number of my acquaintances here write fanfic (and I'm doing a little myself), and I've been inspired to illustrate some of their work. I really like OCs because I like the challenge they pose.

So for the fun of it I thought I'd share some of my drawings with fellow scifi artist and enthusiasts.

happy

I love feedback and discussing technics as well!

grin

So - here goes:

This is the perliminary sketch and finished piece for a wonderful fanfic writer with the moniker geo3. It's of her amazing OC, V'ar, a twi'lek.

prelim: pencil

finished: conté crayon

I hope I did this correctly - it's my first time! tongue

Thanks a lot AG88!

I have a couple of Painter things I'm working on, but I feel a bit like I'm learning to draw all over again. The wacom is not easy to use! *sigh* I guess it's just a matter of getting used to it.

Here's a pencil drawing I did of another friend's OC

I wanted to post it because I'm really struggling with something else I'm working on in Painter. tongue

Very nice drawing. You are really good with the human anatomy.

Don't worry, you will eventually get used to the Wacom and Painter. I have been painting for less than a year and I am doing all right. I got Painter last Christmas, but I have only been using it to touch up my 3D animation images until recently. In fact the first painting that I did from scratch was done two months ago.

So painter has a pretty good learning curve. You will pick it up in no time.

awesome work..
I know what you mean about getting the jist of the wacom tablet..for years, I was the pen and paper person who never touched a computer to draw..then I landed in an animated movie and had to pick it up rather quickly.
Once you get the hang of it though, it's a beauty to work with. I've gotten to the point where my hand now feels shaky and awkward when I try to use traditional media now.
I work mostly in photoshop, but have dabbled in Corel Painter from time to time..If you ever have any questions, feel free to message me and I wil do what I can to help you over the obstacle.

Alright - this is my very first attempt to use Painter. He's my take on some sort of ancient Sith lord. I am still fumbling with the tools but I love the freedom to change things that the program offers. Also it's quick. Where a painting in traditional media may take me weeks to finish, this takes only days - or in this case hours.

like I said, first attempt - I do like his motion anyway.

edit - I'm going to lay off posting my stuff for a little bit - I get very excited when I start a new thread - but I don't want anyone to think I'm trying to spam the board.

Hi rs! hugs

Welcome to Fanarts!

Wow, looks awesome! I can see why you've done illustrations and such.

I love the feeling of movement you get from the Twi'Lek's pose. (I can so not draw someone running towards me!)

And the sleeping OC's is great! I love how many details you have on his lips and the eyebrows and the ears! And the pose again. He looks very handsome, if I might add that. blush

As to your latest drawing, it looks good as well. Considering it's your first drawing with the Painter, it's amazing how well you did.
Again, I like the movement here, but esp the details on his arm.
Just wondering a bit where the rest of his lightsaber has gone to. Did he cut through his own cape? grin

Looking forward to seeing more! happy

Hi there rocketscientist, and allow me to add my own warm welcome to our forum! You wrote: "I'm going to lay off posting my stuff for a little bit - I get very excited when I start a new thread - but I don't want anyone to think I'm trying to spam the board."

laugh Not to worry! Post as often as you have something to put up (and we'll all rush in here to check it out! happy )--indeed, if you have more completed work, just add it in at your leisure (and really, I don't know if you could characterize frequent posts of work as "spamming...").

You are indeed a very talented artist--the Twi'lek is so beautiful! I'm not skilled in figure drawing myself, and so have a great admiration (along with some jealousy! tongue ) for those who can do it well--she really appears to be almost floating as she runs, there's such a beautiful lightness in her form... The completed piece is stunning, with gorgeous blending of colors (love all the warm tones here) and an amazing rendering of the clouds and the dust rising from the ground.

The Sith Lord is also gorgeous--again, beautiful, flowing movement, in the figure and in the entire piece--the hair, the clothing. The colors are so rich, and imbue the piece with the feeling of dark power this person wields. Wonderful!

And I totally love the portrait--it's just beautiful, with a wonderful sense of soft light and easiness of the figure (was this from a photo, a model, or out of your head...?). The closed eyes, the touseled hair convey a deep sense of peacefulness--it's a lovely, lovely portrait!

And I say keep on posting! Don't stop! Whatever you have, we'll all be glad to see it, so post away--and again, welcome to our community!

Hey! Thanks for the comments everybody! There is some really awesome art here and It's nice to get feedback from other artists. grin

AG88
Very nice drawing. You are really good with the human anatomy.

Thank you, I will admit that figure drawing is my forté. I use figure models whenever I can. Of course in school I worked with models every day. still have some of those drawings and use them from time to time for other work.

Don't worry, you will eventually get used to the Wacom and Painter.

I'm workin' on it! Sometimes it comes easily and then others I feel like I'm all thumbs! I'm sure I'll have some questions for you before much longer. Right now I'm working out of the book to try to master the tools. wrestling with the prospective grid at the moment.

Thanks TOJP - there's more! mischief

DarthMikus, thanks! I picked up a lot of new skills with the first movie job I landed too! LOL - they make you, don't they?

Once you get the hang of it though, it's a beauty to work with. I've gotten to the point where my hand now feels shaky and awkward when I try to use traditional media now.

Right now I feel that way about the wacom! What I've been doing is sketching traditionally and the scanning it in to the program. Sometimes I make a tracing nd sometime I make it the canvas and layer over it so I can keep my lines without them showing. But I have a hard time remembering what I did from picture to picture.

Hi Chilla! Thanks for the kind words!

I love the feeling of movement you get from the Twi'Lek's pose. (I can so not draw someone running towards me!)

Thanks! Conveying movement is very important to me!

And the sleeping OC's is great! I love how many details you have on his lips and the eyebrows and the ears! And the pose again. He looks very handsome, if I might add that.

grin thanks - his good looks tend to get him in trouble. LOL!

Just wondering a bit where the rest of his lightsaber has gone to. Did he cut through his own cape?

LOL!!!! I was thinking the very thing! When I finished the drawing I thought 'I bet he tears up his cloaks alot' - you know, you may have given me an idea for another drawing of him - with his cloak all cut up. mischief

Hi there FalconFan!
I was just a little worried, but thanks! I read the rules thread and it didn't say anything about the number of posts in a day - but I didn't want to push it in case I had missed something.

You like the Sith lord? I'm so glad! He's a bit crude - but it kinda fits him. tongue Painter if is both awesome and frustrating. I guess anything new is like that.

I'm more comfortable with traditional media but this offers a way to do so many things so quickly.

And I totally love the portrait--it's just beautiful, with a wonderful sense of soft light and easiness of the figure (was this from a photo, a model, or out of your head...?). The closed eyes, the touseled hair convey a deep sense of peacefulness--it's a lovely, lovely portrait!

Thanks - that's quite a compliment coming from you! He's from a photo of a life model. The original guy had a shaved head and no facial hair.

And I say keep on posting! Don't stop! Whatever you have, we'll all be glad to see it, so post away--and again, welcome to our community!

OK, and thanks! grin

soitscometothis - love your handle! mischief

Thank you so much! I have done a lot of work in the past with figure - I'm glad you like it! And yeah- the OC is a honey. wink

Since FalconFan said it was ok - I'm going to post some illustrations from a fic I wrote called Prometheus Binding - it's about Vader. I do find the Sith kinda fascinating. batting

This is sort of a nightmare of Vader's

Vader wounded

Some are obviously more detailed than others.

Whoa...

applause all over again!

Your professional experience as an illustrator really shows itself in what you've shared with us so far, rocketscientist--your use of color, movement and steep perspectives give your work such power...it's just awesome! applause

These latest pieces are no exception:

Vader's Nightmare gives me shivers--it's so obviously Anakin, before the duel, but the posture is so rife with misery it just pinches the heart! Beautiful (and deep emotional impact like this always snags me, totally!)!

The OCs are wonderful--love the deep contrasts, their relaxed yet ready stances and the fighters standing ready to go--it tells a great story with just one picture! You really do clothing beautifully (is jealous again! wink )--it looks totally real!

Vader in Theed is gorgeous--with just a few bold strokes you've captured him, and the reds here are positively chilling...amazing use of color!

Vader fighting Jedi is linked to the thumbnail--we'd love to have the link to the full-size image (**face_begging** happy )!

And Vader Wounded is a perfect example of that powerful perspective I was goggling over earlier--this is a spectacular image: of what's left of the man, pathetic and truncated, dependent on artificial life support--the most feared being in Palpatine's Empire, a mere shadow of a human being... Stunningly powerful--a gorgeous study.

All I can say is wow, wow, and wow again! We're so glad you're here, and can't wait for more!

Wow, LOVE the dreadlock sith lord guy, great image! In fact, I have enjoyed all the pieces you have put up here. My only piece of criticism, and this might be more the fault of the scanner or whatever, is that the pieces are all pretty dark, and it is kind of hard to distinguish detail. If its intentional, cool. A lot of the work has a very dark vibe that I dig, so it does fit. Either way, awesome job!

Hi there rocketscientist! (good name, lol) Welcome to the forums! happy

Wow, I loved the blue twi'lek (conte crayon). I love how she seems so mystique and the cloud dust is beautifully rendered. Despite being under a hooded robe, she still sticks out easily from her surroundings because of the excellent choice of colours. All the details are lovely.

Vader Wounded is another one which immediately jumped out at me. The perspective is fantastic and wonderfully done. Also, I really wish I shared your skill for drawing things mechanical.

The nightmare of Vader's is just oozing with mood. Misery and torture truly evident. It's almost strange to see something that is essentially so depressing painted with warm colours, however it seems so typically Anakin at the same time. Like and explosion of emotion, volatile - fitting for ep3.

...and with the talent you exhibit using traditional media, I think you'll do just fine picking up on the workings of using a tablet wink (and I can't wait to see the results either!)

FalconFan - Thanks for the detailed feedback!

Tortured Waste - what I call the nightmare piece, was done in block pastel with almost no blending because I wanted it to have a raw feeling. The figure is heavily stylized. I had to photograph it with a digital camera so the light area around the black sun got all blown out to white. I wanted it to have a lot of tension, but looking back at it, I wish I had placed the Anakin figure slightly differently.

The OCs were a fun quick sketch out of my head and they have a bit of a comic book feel that I like. The ships are weak - I didn't spend any time on them. I should do some studies of ships to get them down. It was all really kind of a doodle that wouldn't stop. tongue

Oh, and I'll fix that thumdnail - it's also a doodle what kept going.

The wounded Vader - I like the figure in this piece but I did screw up the perspective on the table a bit. That's what I get for eyeballing it! I'm not too good with mechanical things so I feel like the droid could be better. With all that, I do think I was able get across what I intended.

Thanks again for your kind words!

NarCranor - I'm glad you like the Sith lord. He was fun to do. Yeah, tonally these are pretty dark. It is the digital camera in some cases. These are a tad darker than the actually pieces. Uhm, I guess V'ar's face has gotten lost a bit now that you mention it... sigh! LOL!

Hi Your_Worshipfulness! Thanks for your comments on Var - she's a favorite of mine.

I'm glad you thought the droid is ok on the Vader drawing, now I feel like it's not all tht bad.

The dream scene is a blend of Mustafar and my imagination. The colors kinda reflect that. I'm glad you liked it!

This is a interpretation of a dream from a friend's fic - it's SW but it's pretty AU. I've done a few illustrations for it - it's a Vader survives RotJ and is healed fic (and a good one at that)
