Try changing the color of the outlines of the glowing beings to a lighter green color or a lighter brownish color.
It might help.

These are incredible! I am such a sucker for color (probably because it isn't something I do well). Any tips for us newbs in the 'color realm'??? batting For that matter, any tips on perspective and movement (both of which are simply amazing!)?

Hi all

Again I have to start by thanking you all for all the positivity you have shown me, it really makes me feel part of something when we all log in and look around for the familiar names to see who has posted and what everyone's been up to. I'm relatively new to this and still learning the etiquette of it all, so if I say something I shouldn't or don't mention something I should, please be patient.

FalconFan posted:
The feeling of movement/motion is definitely still there, in Trytenn's pose

You know when you do a drawing and you're just not happy with it, like there's something bugging you and you just can't let it go? Well this drawing really irritated me so I'm putting it right. I just went back to the original composition and realized I shouldn't have changed it at all, sometimes you just have to do that: do something, look at it, go back and fix it, do it again until it's right. It's the perfectionist in me.

Blue_but_beautiful posted:
There's so much aimated-esque movement in the pieces...

Thanks Blue. I studied animation and my fellow students would show off by quoting very obscure short animated films that very few people had heard of and which I also enjoyed but I'd be all: "Yeah, that's great and everything but you just can't beat the old anvil falling on someone's head or a pie in the face". My favorite animator is Tex Avery and his cartoons still put me on the floor with laughter.

YodaKenobi posted:
I especially like the Yoda and the dynamic Han & Chewie speeder piece.

HI YK. Those two pieces are the only ones I have posted which feature the main OT characters, I think I'm going to have to do more.

Chilla posted:

Hi Chilla, yeah they don't seem to be the most practical of sabers, I'm totally old school, give me a standard light saber any day.

HI Zonoma, I stopped by your threads and I think you have a good grasp of color but what I would say is to be aware of contrast. Please forgive me but I borrowed one of your drawings to demonstrate what I mean:

The colors you have chosen aren't wrong but in a couple of places they are from the same end of the spectrum and so in losing the contrast you can also lose things like atmosphere and depth of field. The colors I have chosen aren't great or anything but I just wanted to show you what I mean and remember, the only person you have to please is yourself, if you're happy, that's all that matters.

In terms of perspective and movement, there are a few tricks but I think the only way to learn is draw everything. I carry a pad and pencil almost everywhere I go and draw wherever I am, there is no substitute for real life, eventually it becomes instinctual and I'm still learning. Please feel free to PM me with any specific issues or drawings you have.

*is delighted* Thank you! Gah, I had a lot I wanted to say but now it has fled my mind (too early, I guess). Thank you again for taking the time to do that, though. And for the offer. I will *definitely* take you up on it with my next coloring attempt! Seeing what you have for me there makes me want to run and recolor a bunch of things, though.

Awesome! grin

Hi gang

Boy it's been a long time since I posted anything here. I had a bit of a crazy summer work wise, right up until the past few days and I've been itching to put something up. I put my name forward on the artist volunteer thread so hopefully someone else can come up with the ideas.

One of the things I was able to do since I've been away is look over my old work and try and fix the things I wasn't happy with. A lot of times I get frustrated with my inking, which I think is a weakness and so I decided that I want to try a more edgy style. One of the drawings I did definitely has a darker side, maybe it was just because it was halloween:

This drawing was done for 'Master-of-evil' from one of the RPG threads:

And this Sith Character is of 'LordDarthUmbrus', again from the RPG thread:

Anyway, I really hope to be posting a lot more very soon and looking forward to catching up with everyone over the next few days.

EDIT: I meant the below for the last stuff on the previous page... doh. tongue But I rather like the sketchy quality of the first two pieces you just put up, especially the first one. It just fits the mood, and looks cool!

*laughs*

Haha, I like the new ones here! very cute, nice color schemes. The first one is really dynamic, way to go there. But I think I like the second one better, I like the purple and yellow color scheme, and it's just cute and got great expressions on everyone!

Oh, Excellent! EXCELLENT work, Lavo!

If its OK with you, I'd like to link your thread here to the Galaxy At War III: Schism of the Sith RPG running in the RPG forum.

You'll be getting some visitors from there, no doubt. Several (including myself) have attempted to illustrate certain characters and scenes that we make up in that thread. None are nearly as dynamic as yours. You have a great flair for action!

I loooove 'my' likeness, by the way...it captures the real 'me'...Don't you think? tongue .

Thank you very much for your wonderful work, Lavo! Keep it coming!

These are all fantastic, really. I'm not just saying that out of being too lazy to comment every single one. They all look really professional and don't worry - I've been told not to draw so much Star Wars - but it really is up to the person drawing isn't it? So keep up the good work.

HI gang

I've been working really hard lately and not getting nearly as much done as I would like to but I thought I had to stop and post this illustration. 'Master of Evil" asked to produce a poster of all the characters involved in his role playing thread - 'Galaxy at war'. At first I was a bit daunted because he outlined the details of 11 characters to be shown, including planets and vehicles. I thought this would be a good example of the requirements of compromise when responding to someone else's idea.

First of all: arrangement. How on earth do you fit so many people on one page? I quickly realised that I couldn't do it as a portrait shaped poster, it would have to be landscape. Secondly, I didn't want to have everyone just stand there, I wanted to keep a sense of movement as the eye moves from left to right. Here is one of the first sketches I did. if you squint real hard you may be able to see people:

As you can see, it is a bit of a mess. I really had to work hard at the composition so I tackled it in three parts: left, centre and right. Here's another trial sketch for the centre section:

After I repeated that process and refined the poses, I cleaned up and scanned each one and assembled them into a black and white line drawing:

And finally, colour:

I'm really happy with the result, even though I haven't been able to squeeze in all of the elements 'M.O.E." asked for, I think I got most of it.

Lavo,

I have just now taken receipt of the fine panorama of some of GAW III's characters which you so evocatively executed at MOE's kind request! I'm bowled over! As LDU has said, your work is very dynamic. It's been awhile since I've seen such movement and depth of expression conveyed in economic and deft manner. The spare line and palette really combine to bring the whole together in a very kinetic way.

Something I find really fascinating is the color combining the mind does after the fact, and how you've used a spare but potent palette to take advantage of that phenomenon.

We in GAW are honored and I encourage you to make yourself known in our thread with a link or invitation to your art pages here, as I'm sure others amongst our crew would appreciate and enjoy your work.

Thank you,

Pash

I am officially a LavoFan!

Excellent work again, my friend! I like the sensitivity you give to the Jedi characters. With but a few lines, you tell their story on their faces.

Pashy is right about your use of color! I think it does a great job of unifying the characters and giving them focus.

Very exciting!
