I'm curious, because my dad would like to buy a microphone for video conferencing, and I might just borrow it!
So I need to advise him...

Well, me... I use a Seinhouser M66 Shotgun Mic... but that's because it's the highest quality mic I have for my Canon XL-1; as far as I know, it's not standard audio recording equipment.

Ooh. Sennheiser.
They're really expensive aren't they?
I doubt my dad would fork out that much!

I've produced four online radio show series, eight audio drama style episodes, and numerous voice roles and such for other people's projects . . .
And I've done it all on a cheap-o $10 Radio Shack microphone.
It's not really the microphone that makes the different most of the time. It's the quality of your recording program and its noise filters.

Glad I could help.
On the same note: Those "cheap" stick microphones like what I have come in two variants I've seen, one of which takes a battery, while the other does not. I've noticed no major performance differences between the two, except on computers where you can't manually adjust your microphone or track volume while or after recording.
