Well, the index has been successfully updated. Just so you all get an idea of how big it is, in Microsoft Word, Times New Roman, size twelve font, the index is forty-nine pages long. happy

And so that it doesn't like like I came in here just to brag about how massively enormous the index has gotten, I'll congratulate the winners of the challenge. So, um, CONGRATULATIONS! applause applause You guys all did awesome work.

In addition, I'm sorry about the messed up formating in the above posts. Apparently, if there are too many mark-ups, it starts going funky. That's the only thing I can think of, since I went over the coding several times to be sure, and it looks normal- until you see the actual result. Anyhoo, I'm off.

Ciao!

jaynasolofel- All of the links to the challenges are at the bottom of the index post. They're included after a description of each challenge. Unfortunately, coding is a little funky, but the links should still work. Contact me if they don't, so that I'll know to fix it grin

Title: Many Faces of the Force
Author: Jaina_Solo_15
Timeframe: NJO
Summary: Jaina and Kyp find Callista on a planet being attacked by the Vong. She claims that she can feel the Vong in the Force, but is she telling the truth?
Reviewer: NYCitygurl
Review: Jaina and Kyp find Callista on a planet being attacked by the Vong. She claims that she can feel the Vong on the Force so they take her back to Mon Calamari. Luke sends Callista and Jaina to the Jedi Shelter in the Maw so that she can teach, but it puts a strain on Mara and Jaina. With them goes Twin Suns squadron, including Jag. As the story unfolds, the war puts a strain on Jaina and Jag's relationship as they try to rescue Jacen from the Vong. I really liked the way the relationships between characters were dealt with, and the way Callista seems to twist bonds between characters. I also liked the way Cem, Jag's little sister, was portrayed, and the twists that her characer brought.

Title: Sword of the Jedi
Author: Jaina_Solo_15
Timeframe: NJO
Summary: Jaina's life after Destiny's Way, and how she deals with being the Sword of the Jedi, a Yuuzhan Vong goddess, and her relationship with Jag Fel.
Reviewer: NYCitygurl
Your Review: Sword of the Jedi starts with one of Jaina's many missions, and while waiting for an attack she remembers her relationship with Jag Fel, and a simple mistake they made that might cost them their relationship. This mistake was very cleverly done, and somewhat funny. The story jumps forward several years, and as the war continues, Jaina finds solace in someone she loves while Leia reveals a very unexpected surprise.

Title: Under My Skin
Author: DarthIshtar
Timeframe: post NJO
Summary: When Jag breaks Jaina out of prison, they have to survive hellish conditions and deal with their relationship.
Reviewer: NYCitygurl
Your Review: Jaina's trapped on in enemy territory, so General Darklighter sends Jag to get her out. They end up trapped without a ship, and have to get through a blizzard to get to a friendly outpost. Along the way, they have to deal with the troubles caused by Jaina's injuries and their relationship with each other. I enjoyed the story very much--the basic plot isn't one that's been overused, and the relationship twist is one that hasn't been dealt with much. DarthIshtar did a good job protraying Jaina's and Jag's history and Jaina's feelings about him. Though a short story, it is a very enjoyable read.

Author Interview

Yes! We have our first interview! happy

And may I now present oldjedinurse! applause applause

So what got you into Star Wars?

I have always had an enormous imagination (as my family would gladly confirm) and I’m a very visual person. Those qualities made watching ANH in 1977 a pivotal moment in my life. George Lucas had created fantasy images that seemed real. They were commonplace and impossible at the same time. The story was interesting, but the important thing in my mind was that the film visually created a galaxy that did not exist. Space travel was like driving a car, and the familiarity of human beings was intermingled with the diverse group of barflies at the Mos Eisley Cantina. I loved it. I wanted to be there.

Star Wars is a myth for modern times, a contemporary version of the classics I always found rather boring. I’m much more interested in what could be than what has been. Future or alternate realities essentially have no limitations. By comparison, history is colored and bound by evidence, facts and records. I am fascinated by a universe where every frame of film, and now every page of fiction, presents brand new ideas. I love believing that anything is possible.

In the nearly thirty years since George Lucas first stoked my imagination, I’ve never lost interest in his galaxy. I was a member of the original Fan Club and now I spend time in Hyperspace. I count myself lucky to have experienced the entire journey.

To follow that, what specifically drew you to writing fanfic?

In high school and college, I was one of those students who preferred long essay questions on exams and would stay up all night writing papers on their due date. I did some of my best writing at 3:00 in the morning!

In real life, I have co-authored and edited several articles published in professional journals, and over the years I’ve written a few unpublished children’s books, poetry and short stories for my own enjoyment.

Fanfic is a very new passion. I actually had no idea the fanfic world existed until about three or four years ago. Once I found it, I lurked and read other writers’ work until I just couldn’t resist the temptation to try it myself. It took me a while to find the courage to write a story and send it out there for all to see. That’s a very vulnerable feeling!

Watching the films and reading the EU books made the SW characters feel like old friends, so when I sat down to write about them the words came very easily. These days, like most fanfic writers, I find myself scribbling ideas on scraps of paper and carrying a pen and notebook wherever I go.

The response to my fanfics has been very surprising but extremely rewarding. As a result, writing FF has now become part of my everyday life.

What is it about Jaina and Jag that made you want to write about them?

The short answer: I like both characters. But of course there’s more to it than that.

It is apparent to me that Jag was created as at least a temporary love interest for Jaina. From the ways that their characters have repeatedly been brought together, it feels as if they are likely to become a permanent couple. So if I trust my instincts, I expect that their relationship will continue to progress and remain canon. I tend to like to stay close to canon while writing about the future or filling in missing scenes.

The way I view their characters has everything to do with why I write them. Jag is an archetypal hero. He’s flawed as a person, but has strong beliefs, is a slave to duty and has a knack for winning. Jaina is the reckless heroine. She is strong, independent and willful, sometimes finding success by the seat of her pants. If SW was baseball, Jag would be the stoic catcher, watching everything and running the game with quiet signals. Jaina would be getting hits and sliding head-first into every base.

This makes them a very interesting pairing and their relationship begs answers to so many questions. Can Jag “tame” Jaina? Will Jaina “crack” Jag’s reserve? What’s behind Jag’s controlled exterior? Can independent-to-a-fault Jaina accept having a partner to share life’s burdens? What happens if they do get together? And what if they don’t?

Their situation is full of contradictions and conflicts, yet they are obviously strongly attracted to each other. Their family histories complicate their relationship. Jag is part of Jaina’s extended “family” through his uncle, meaning they are likely to have continued contact regardless of the path their relationship takes. Their skills put them on equal footing. Their apparent “connection” in the Force is a little mysterious and could be explored. There is so much to write about.

Although there are other male characters who are potential mates for Jaina, I find those pairings do not offer the same breadth of opportunities for stories. I believe that the Jag and Jaina relationship has the richest potential.

I see you like to enter the challenges. Is there something in particular that draws you to those?

Oh, I love a challenge!

Its fun to have someone create a set of parameters and then test myself to see if I can write within those boundaries. I view challenges as a twist on improvisational drama or comedy – someone gives you a set-up and you are forced to come up with something entertaining within a certain time limit. It doesn’t really matter to me whether challenge fictions are judged or not. If I’m satisfied with my response, that’s enough.

As a tie-in to that question, I’ve noticed you write quite a few songfics. Do you want to tell us what about certain songs inspires you?

Music, like real and fictional life, is very emotional. Melodies inspire moods, and lyrics represent stories. That explains my starting point for songfics.

Now and then, the mood and story in a song will remind me of a favorite SW character. Bits and pieces of the lyrics will specifically fit something that has been written about them, or a story idea of my own. Then I become a bit of an imaginary voyeur!

I begin to visualize characters in a situation that fits the song. Like a “fly on the wall” I watch a scene unfold, complete with environment and dialogue. Where these images come from, I don’t know, but this is when I start scribbling in my handy notebook (in the car, in restaurants, wherever). I try to write down as much of the imagined scene as I can, but I’ll continue to think about it for a while, adding or changing little things.

Later, I will type out the song’s lyrics. Using them as a framework, I’ll take my notes and my memory of the imaginary scene, and write the songfic.

I find songfics very satisfying. The addition of a “soundtrack” adds another dimension to emotional stories.

The Best of Us appears to be your longest J/J story. How about giving the J/J fan a little synopsis, and maybe a few *hints* as to what we might expect.

The Best of Us is definitely my longest story – ever! It’s difficult to provide a short synopsis but I’ll do my best.

…As TUF ends, Jaina and Jag spend a day together, unaware that a “Dark Side presence” is implanting thoughts into Jaina’s head, suggesting that she use the Force to get pregnant in her last hours with Jag. Before he leaves, Jag is reassigned to a position in the far reaches of space. Suddenly their plans for rendezvous are gone and their goodbye feels pretty final.

A few weeks later, Jaina knows she is pregnant with triplets. Han virtually disowns her and abruptly takes off in the Falcon. He feels remorse about reacting the way he did, but believes that Jaina is being selfish and strongly disagrees with her decision not to tell Jag about her pregnancy. He visits Lando Calrissian, who agrees with Han that Jag should know, and the pair set out for Csilla.

Jaina begins to have flashes of memory about the Dark Side presence, hearing the voice that influenced her. As she struggles to understand she realizes that the Dark Side presence inhabits one of her babies. Luke, Mara, Jacen and Kyp begin searching for answers. Luke believes the presence has something to do with Sonama Zekot, since that is where Jaina and Jag said goodbye.

Han and Lando find Jag still at his parent’s home on Csilla. They tell him about Jaina’s pregnancy just before the room they occupy is destroyed by a devastating blast. Jag and Lando receive minor injuries, but Han is critically hurt.

Lando contacts Leia and the Solo-Skywalker family quickly travels to Csilla as the Fel estate remains under siege. Upon arrival, Mara helps to end the persistent air attack but they discover that Han’s life hangs in the balance as he is transferred to the best medical facility on Csilla. While the family holds vigil near Han, Kyp continues to research the Dark presence using Ac’siel’s vast libraries.

Shawnkyr Nuruodo helps Soontir Fel investigate the attack on his home. They discover a group who call themselves “Purge” with connections to the Inrokini and Csapla families. They believe the members of Purge want to be rid of Soontir.

Jag spoke to his parents before the arrival of Han’s family and Lando offered him advice in Han’s place. Just before Han is moved, Jag and Jaina talk, and they both struggle to comprehend their situation.

After hours of treatment, Han’s physician informs the family that he will live, but he has suffered a stroke. His prognosis remains clouded.

As everyone absorbs the implications of these complicated events, Jaina and Jag find a quiet moment in the waiting room of Han’s medical ward. They begin to rebuild their bond and begin to feel like a family…

*Hints* about what’s coming up?

~ The players are now in place for a three-front war –
The battle to save Jaina and her babies from the Dark Side,
the battle for Han’s health,
and the battle against prejudice among the Chiss. *Phew!*

~ We soon learn the identity of the Dark Side presence.
~ There is a direct relationship between this presence and a character EU fans know.
~ Kyp, Jacen and Lando take the Falcon on a mission.
~ The plot against Soontir proves to be extremely dangerous.
~ Han is not going to be well anytime soon.
~ Jaina’s babies are at risk as her son becomes aware of the presence within him.

How is writing a longer story different than writing a shorter piece? Better? Challenging?

I find that vignettes, songfics and short stories more or less write themselves in one or two sittings. They tend to roll out of me as I sit at the computer. So, for me, short stories are pure pleasure.

For longer stories, especially one as complicated as Best of Us, I need to have at least an outline if not a detailed plan before I start to write. I always aim to be at least one or two chapters ahead of the posts, although DRL frequently interferes with that goal. I try to post once a week, with occasional bonus chapters.

Longer stories are definitely more challenging. But as I admitted earlier, I love a challenge, so finishing my first large piece will be very satisfying. A big part of that is the continued support and encouragement from readers. I can’t express what it means to have them stick with the story and even beg for chapters! I’m still astonished that anyone wants to read any of it.

You’ve written more than J/J, why don’t you tell us about some of your other favorite characters?

I love writing Han Solo. He’s very close to my heart and when I’m writing him, it seems so easy to “get inside his head”. I love the humor he brings to SW as well as his complex and unique relationships with the other characters.

I’ve also enjoyed writing a bit of Obi-wan, Qui-Gon, Corran and Mirax Horn and I’m not finished with them yet. Mara Jade Skywalker is another of my absolute favorite characters and I have a songfic in the works for her.

There are many plot bunnies hiding around the house tempting me to write others: Luke and Mara, Talon Karrde, Wedge Antilles…oh, who am I kidding? I love them all.

Lastly, where do you see Jaina and Jag going forward in canon? And what advice would you like to give to the writers of the Legacy of the Force series?

Having read all of the SW novels, I’m inclined to believe that Jaina and Jag will continue to be written as a love story. Whether that story becomes joyous or tragic is up to the authors of the upcoming series and the Sages of Skywalker Ranch.

I think Jaina and Jag pursuing their relationship, getting married and having children would be the right direction to take. The combining of their families is a fascinating story in its own right. Ultimately, however, SW needs continuity if it is to survive in literature. Just as Han and Leia married and had children when the EU began, future books will need to create new generations to carry on the Force legacy. It would be stepping away from the tradition of SW to create those generations only from new and unrelated characters. Jacen, Ben Skywalker, the Horn children and Wedge Antilles’ daughters are just a few of the other young characters who should provide the foundation for the stories still to come. Fans have taken these characters into their hearts, therefore they cannot be ignored if the EU is to survive.

The same goes for many individuals and cultures with featured or recurring parts in the EU. Talon Karrde, Wraith Squadron and the Chiss are examples of characters I believe readers want included in future books.

If the authors of the Legacy of the Force series were looking for advice, I would say be true to the history of SW. Be attentive to the character continuity I’ve talked about, and balance that with new ideas. There have always been characters of mystery in SW (Vergere and Yoda, for example) and I would suggest those are always fascinating. Resolve some old mysteries, perhaps, as you create fresh ones.

I’m sure that the authors of the Legacy series know that the fans are intensely aware of what is canon. Therefore the accurate preservation of SW history will impact the series’ success. At the same time, the authors have their work cut out for them in meeting fan expectations in terms of hoping for ‘new everything’: Planets, ships, weapons, species, you-name-it.

The task of adding to the official SW universe has to be a daunting one. I wish all of the authors well, and can’t wait to read the upcoming series!
