RE: Mood Music for Writers
I always need my Trapt CD. It's got my angst and I like the hard rock feel.
For battle scenes, I steal my brother's Shadows of the Empire CD, since that gets me in the mood for Star Wars.
Anything punk rock gets me motivated to write, you should see me write a research paper with Mest, Good Charlotte, Simple Plan, and Something Corporate roaring in the background
For those hard to write scenes, I listen to Nightwish and Lacuna Coil. Both have such distinct rock/metal sounds that I just feel in the mood to write.

Currently, I'm hooked on Enya, but it doesn't fit for every scene (especially not for fights :P ).

Lightsaber duels--currently, the soundtrack from Pirates of the Caribbean. I don't do mushy H/L scenes
but when it comes to Luke and Mara, which I do quite often, it's almost anything romantic. When writing anything about any of the Skywalker women (Padme, Leia, Mara, Jaina) I refer to all the classic girlpower stuff...almost any and all Destiny's Child, I Will Survive, some Shania Twain stuff, and some Christina Aguilera (Fighter, baby!) :-D

I tend to look for theme songs for scenes in particular. I dont necessarily listen to them while writing but it sometimes helps me picture a scene in my head before I write it down.

Well, wouldja look at that!? Tons of replies in just one day!
This thread could definitely become a
soundtrack listing
for all our stories. I think that would be wicked cool. Just mention the scene (or date of post) and the music which should be accompanied. It might open our eyes (
ears, rather!
)
Sigh, I wish people would reply to my story,
JEDI EXODUS
, as much as they reply to this.

I can't listen to anything w/ lyrics - they make it so I can't concentrate. I prefer instrumental soundtracks or classical music.
I'm the exact same way!
When I write I listen to classical music. Mozart, Tchaikovsky, Dvorak, Chopin, Berlioz, or Strauss. My collection is limited at the time being. I especially like compositions that are set to stories like Berlioz's Symphony Fantastique.
Star Wars music works well also (My fav is the Battle of Hoth)!

Have to have Linkin Park blaring as I write!
ah indeed, I also listen to techno, trance, basically a whole assortment of electronic music also Korn, and Zeromancer (it's really cyber-punkish, and thats kinda how my stories are so it works).

Enya "A Day Without Rain"
Enya "Paint the Sky With Stars: Greatest Hits"
Jewel "Pieces of You"
Jessica Andrews "Heart-Shaped World" ("I Do Now" for Anakin and Padme)
any Weird Al Yankovic puts me in the mood to write humor, especially "The Saga Begins" and "Yoda"
George Strait "Pure Country" ("I Cross My Heart" for Anakin and Padme)
Vince Gill "Let's Make Sure We Kiss Goodbye"
When I'm writing non-Star Wars stuff, I often listen to 80s music because it takes me back to my adolescence.

RE: Mood Music for Writers
I actually try to match specific music tracks to scenes in my stories, so that ideally, if I was able to, I could literally burn a rough soundtrack to each of my stories. Since the majority of my material consists of angst to one degree or another, my greatest resource at hand is the film soundtrack
The Red Violin.
It has some of the most elegant and sorrowful pieces you will ever hear. All the LOTR soundtracks are invaluable, as well as all the SW.
Holst's "The Planets," Ravel, Tchaikovsky, Stravinsky's "Firebird," and many other classical pieces are very useful. Believe it or not, Coldplay comes in very handy for thoughtful passages.
I suppose my oddest selection would be the original soundtrack to Disney's
Sleeping Beauty
, but the music is actually very cultured, as well as beautiful.

I agree with above sentiments about lyrics- distracting.
But I just found the absolute BEST writing music-- got it for my birthday. Yunchen Lhamo's CD "Tibet, Tibet." Beautiful stuff, lots of jedi-ish tracks, and some slow sorrowful tracks, and at least one that screams "EPIC BATTLE!"
And of course the themesong to Dragonhalf ('my Omlette,' I believe it's called) for all things juvinile and slapstick.

RE: Mood Music for Writers
Here we go.
I have over two days' worth of music on the Media Player in my computer, and the vast majority of it is instrumental. Lyrics are very distracting, the only songs with lyrics are in foreign languages, like Elvish or Gaelic. I know enough Spanish, French, and Italian that listening to music in those languages is distracting.
I have a lot of Williams, and not just the SW stuff. I use themes from Harry Potter, A.I., 1941, Midway, The Cowboys, Schindler's List. I also have other composers' stuff: Mozart, Beethoven, soundtracks from The Last Unicorn, LotR, Labyrinth, Ladyhawke (great romantic and fighting themes), Shawshank, Deep Impact, Dances with Wolves, even Riverdance. (I still haven't bought Pirates of the Carribean yet, but that's next on my list.) I use instrumental jazz for seduction-type scenes (sexy romance as opposed to pure love romance).
But Williams' most famous stuff, like Indiana Jones, Jaws, and E.T., are too recognizable. I can't get Indy out of my mind enough to write about Qui-Gon.

A last I'm not the only one that listens to music while writing LOL
For me I tend to pick a single album to fit the overall mood and tempo of the story. I tend not to listen to a lot of the Star Wars soundtracks when I'm writing cause I don't want to be overly influnece by the tone and mood that John Williams set for the movies; it can be limiting at times. My CD collection tends to expand pretty fast when I'm working on anay writing project where music is playing a major role in the planning.
When I was writing
"Death's Twilight"
is listened to a lot of Lee Anne Womack with a little Rob Zombie thrown in to set the mood of a dark twist revenge story hemmed arounf the edges by a romance story for Palpatine.
I'v found recently though that I tend to think of Anakin in more terms of Linkin Park. The outsider, ****ed by everyone, used by everyone, motif of some of their songs seem to fit him well.

I stay away from anything with lyrics. Additionally, I can't listen to any piece of classical music that has an engaging melody, because I'll start "singing" to the tune in my head. However, I've found that Philip Glass' sountracks work wonders as background writing music and have written many short stories and essays while listening to his work for
The Hours
on loop.

RE: Mood Music for Writers
I've found that my writing is heavily influenced by the tone and lyrics of the music I'm listening to. So, rather than shut off that inspiration completely and switch it to background classical, I pick out whatever songs relate to the scene, even if it means one song on loop for hours.
