Guys, found some awesome music. Or rather, re-found it, because I remember using it many years ago as moody background music for writing.

Dvorak, New World Symphony, Slavonic Dances, and an operatic one.

Chooooice! grin

I've been following this discussion with interest - it's been fun to see what everybody uses as inspiration. I can't listen to anything while writing, myself - I get distracted too easily. But I had to respond to Guerre's latest - Dvorak is wonderful. For other moody, weird stuff try Berlioz, Symphonie Fantastique.

Cheers,

Shaindl

I usually don't lsiten to SW music while writing, though the music itself will inspire a scene. While I'm brainstorming/outlining, I'll listen to a whole schmorgasborg (I know I didn't spell that correctly, sorry) of music, but I do have playlists of certain songs to evoke certain emotions. Sometimes, if I have no idea what to do with a story, I'll just start listening to random music and writing down whatever those songs and lyrics bring to mind.

Anger/Dark emotions
Linkin Park
Audioslave
Nirvana
Chevelle

Sadness and Angst
Incubus
King of Pain - The Police
Coldplay
U2
John Mayer
Norah Jones

L'amour
Every Little Thing She Does is Magic - The Police
In Your Eyes - Peter Gabriel
Two Step - DMB
Just Like Heaven - The Cure
Ewan McGregor--I can't believe some of you forgot him! tongue
John Mayer
Johnny Mercer

Attitude and Action
See group #1
'80s music
soundtracks to British movies
Madonna
David Bowie
The Matrix
Paul Oakenfold
Bouncing Souls, Me First and the Gimme Gimmes, other punk bands
Scott Joplin-esque rags

Honestly, for me, there are some kinds of music that just work for every occasion, like group #1, SW, and LOTR.

Oh, for "Jedi" music, I rather like Kitaro. Brian Eno's "Music for Airports" is Jedi-ish, too, but I've used that as de-stress music that now it makes me drowsy.

Is "Tibet, Tibet" New Age, Roo?

I have two CDs that I listen to. The first is the soundtrack to the anime series Vampire Princess Miyu. It's really great for moody scenes, action and angst. For more lighthearted stuff, I pop in the Sailor Moon CD Lunarock.

I usually listen to movie soundtracks when I'm writing SW fanfiction. The ones I listen to the most are the SW soundtracks (obviously) and LOTR. I also listen to the soundtracks for Pirates of the Caribbean, Braveheart, Gladiator, and Willow while writing, and somtimes Madonna's Ray of Light.

A lot of times I'll find songs that have lyrics which work for the mood I'm trying to get into or the characters I'm writing. Right now I'm listening to the Lord of the Rings soundtrack quite often, plus a lot of Evanescence and Switchfoot. Previously the Spiderman soundtrack has been pretty good (the soundtrack's actually better than the movie, in my opinion, but that's another story), as well as The Ataris (mostly for YJK stuff).

Vivid_Scripts I've never heard of Jedi Mind Trickz, are they hip hop?

Also, a number of people mentioned the soundtrack to Pirates of the Carribbean. I saw the movie, although I don't remember the music very well. Who's the composer?

And, as far as movie music is concerned, Nicola Piovani (Italian composer, did Benigni's "Life is Beautiful" and "Pinocchio" as well as Moretti's "The Son's Room") is fantastic! Very good for just general mood and maybe some mush too.

Che la Forza sia con te! grin

Listening to Linkin Park's "Numb" this morning and thought: This has to be Anakin from AOTC and Ep. III; especially his relationship to Obi-Wan and the JEdi order and their expectations of him as the "Chosen One". here's a small snippet of the lyrics:

Can't you see that you're smothering me
Holding too tightly
Afraid to lose control
'Cause everything that you thought I would be
Has fallen apart right in front of you

And here's a link to the full lyrics

The song jsut seems ot fit more nad more to me as I read more and more about what's shaking out in Episode III.

Forcebewitya, YOU ROCK. Zeromancer = love Awesome.

I usually always go with lyrical pieces while I'm writing. There's been many times when I'll be stuck on something and a lyric will get my mind working again, or lyrics will feed me ideas. grin

When I write I listen to whatever I'm into at the moment... usually one of these bands.

Zeromancer, Brand New, TRUSTcompany, Radiohead, U2, R.E.M., Kenna, BT, Fuel, No Doubt, Linkin Park, Sneaker Pimps, P.O.D., etc.

(All of which have inspired something in my stories at one time or another.)

All of those bands can fit into each mood also, depends on what song I'm listening to. mischief

Rob Dougan's 2 disk album Furious Angels is a fantastic blend of orchestral movie music with dance-floor rhythm. He is best known for his donations to the Matrix soundtracks. Click the link above for some samples.

My favorite tracks are on the instrumental disk. "Will You Follow Me?" which has a sweeping epic feel, and "I'm Not Driving Anymore" which is good for frantic chase-scene moments.

LOTR and SW soundtracks work very well. And a lot of the stuff mentioned before (Linkin Park, Coldplay, Enya)

Dido's latest album works well. Was plesantly surprised at that. I can write to nearly anything, it's weird.

Ah! great to see another Zeromancer fan here on the boards! such a good band! Barely anyone knows of them, which kinda makes it all the more awesome. But yeah when I write about like the Coruscant slums and stuff, it's great!

Also, a song thats great if your writing about like angst and stuff, is Dreaming. The one I have is by BT, but there are many different mixed versions of it. It does have lyrics, but it really helps me write. Also Drowning Pool is good, umm also for like vivid discriptive scenes like of alien landscapes and stuff I like listening to House Music (a form of electronic music)mainly the Ministry of Sound, there is some good stuff in there.

Forcebewitya!
