Progress report on the magazine:
I haven't been slacking, it's just that there's more to format than I expected - which is cool, of course. Instead of it being a February issue however - it will be a March issue. But I'd prefer to get it looking right rather than rush it. Plus there's still pieces coming in via PM.

I hope to have it ready next week. happy

Okay - just spent the afternoon finishing off the formatting and coding. It's all done, so am just waiting for an article. Once that's in - it's ready to post. Great team effort - I think you can all give yourselves a pat on the back . . . if you're young and supple that is. grin [creak, creak] wink

TSF, what you are doing is morally wrong, and I expect much better from you.

Nevertheless, contestants can also send me any money they may have in their pockets.

Hah! You're just mad that you didn't think of it first! silly

Who does what in Anahiri: Sound and Silence

Editorial
We did it!
Yes, after much discussion and behind-the-scenes chit-chatting, here we are with the first issue of Anahiri: Sound and Silence. It's a true team effort, which is kind of appropriate when you consider it's aimed at celebrating a couple who were known to be "greater than the sum of their parts". I say "were" but maybe I should really say "are" - because, after all, most of us involved with the magazine prefer to think of Anakin and Tahiri as still being very much a couple in the present tense. And certainly in a large number of our fanfics, this is indeed the case.

So why is their relationship so enduring despite the best efforts of the NJO to destroy it? Why do so many of us feel compelled to write stories, songfics and poems about them, and use them as inspiration for art? Why go to the extent of creating a magazine focussing on these two somewhat reckless and adventurous teens? These are some of the questions Lonewolf89 examines in her thought-provoking, and well-researched, article: "The Undying Bond: How Shippers Have Kept the A/T Love Alive."

Other offerings in this issue include an interview with Elena who provides us with her insights about Anakin and Tahiri, and ponders, among other things, the question of EU 'ships in general and what she as a reader looks for in a story. We also have some beautiful sketches by FalconFan, one of the community of artists here at TF.N, so be prepared to have your socks blown off; unless, of course, you are like Tahiri and don't wear any.

As further proof - as if any more is required - of the continuing interest in Anakin and Tahiri, our intrepid team of reviewers has been busy exploring the various forums for stories and discussions that focus on either Anakin and Tahiri individually, or on both of them together. You can read some of their findings in "Fanfic Reviews" and "We heard it on the grapevine".

And then, of course, there's the Writing Challenge, and judging by the topic Whitey and 11Tahiri11 have come up with this time, I'd say we could be in for some laughs. Anyone is welcome to join in, so please - take a peek and grab your stylus and flimsi.

We've hired out a space - so to speak - to the writers so they can update you on what they're up to, and what Anakin and Tahiri are up to, in their stories. And Courtney_Solo returns from her trip into the newer reaches of Fanfic with links to the latest additions to the ongoing A/T anthology. Believe me, there is plenty of food for all tastes, so sample freely. In fact - treat yourself and be a glutton. It's a win-win situation.

Last, but by no means least, we'd like to toast Maggy, our talented graphic artist, for her fantastic design work on the cover. I foresee the sales of colour print cartridges booming over the next week or so as we all run off multiple copies.

Enough said, except to thank all of you in the TF.N community, and lurkers, too, for clicking. We hope you derive as much pleasure from reading as we did from putting it all together.

As always - MTBWY, and to use the new-fangled (heavens knows what technology will come up with next) text-speak: A&T 4eva.

Interview with . . . ELENA
~by Thrawn McEwok~

Okay... it's my great pleasure to be talking today to the amazing Elena, author of 'fics like "The Younger Brother" and "Acid Etched", and chief popularizer of Bao-Dur/Exile and Jag/Leia...

So, for the record; would you define yourself as an A/T 'shipper?

Elena: *laughs* If by A/T shipper, you mean someone who blindly believes that Tahiri and Anakin are meant to be together and without Anakin, Tahiri will lead an empty and depressing life, then no. That's just sad and pathetic, and I like Tahiri too much to wish that on her.

*grins* But if you mean that in the sense that they're a cute couple and usually well-written, either as an alternate universe or canonically, then yes, I am an A/T shipper.

I meant more in the sense of "Are you more likely read A/T 'fic on point of principle when you encounter it, because of the 'ship?" - but I think I like your answer better.

On that topic, though... do you have any particular thoughts, as a 'fic reader, on A/T, Anakin and Tahiri, and the way the canon handles them?

Well, it’s funny, but the JJK and YJK were the first SW books I ever read, way back when I was much younger than I am now *winks*, so Anakin and Tahiri have sort have always been there for me. To be honest, I liked Tahiri more than Anakin at first, because Tahiri was nine or so and telling Anakin what to do, and deep in my sadistical little-girl heart, I enjoyed seeing a younger girl beat up on an older boy.

More than that, though, Tahiri was this fun character. She was honest and forthright and even if she got a little sappy sometimes, she was always looking to the future. And that contrasted with Anakin, who…wasn’t. *laughs* Anakin…had to grow on me. By the end of the JJK’s run, I liked him as much as I liked Tahiri, but sometimes he really annoyed me. He was a thinker, and sort of dour, and he thought too much about the past and the symbolism of his name (Leia made a bad choice there, I think…) and honestly, he was melancholy. So he’s this little dark boy, and Tahiri’s so bright and happy…and eventually, you realize that they’re better together. Not romantically, or anything like that – these were kid’s books, after all, and I, the target audience, still thought boys had cooties – but just together. I don’t know how to explain it better than that.

But the central theme of most of the JJK was they could do stuff together. They were a team, and when they got split up, bad things happened. When they were together, though, they were invincible – or at least, heavily armored. *grins* Luke, Tionne, and Ikrit all make a point of saying something to that effect in the books, and it’s so blatantly obvious that you can’t help but think of them in terms of each other. They counterbalanced each other. Tahiri wasn’t Anakin’s sidekick, but neither was he the straight man to her gags. And it was really, really cool.

And then the NJO began, and Tahiri just…dropped out of sight, and even if Anakin wasn’t alone, he was pretty isolated. His father was grieving, his mother was being herself, and his brother and sister had their own problems. Jaina was on the frontlines, and Jacen was having an identity crisis of a sort. His uncle was busy with the Jedi’s internal problems, and that just left his sick Aunt Mara.

That was an interesting dynamic in itself, and I really thought Anakin became a lot more confident and sure under her tutelage. But I’ve gotten off subject again, haven’t I? *grins* Back to the Anakin/Tahiri relationship…

By the time Anakin and Tahiri meet up again, it’s been something like two years since they saw each other, and they’ve grown up. There’s a change in how they see each other, because Tahiri isn’t nine anymore, and he isn’t eleven. They’re, y’know, adults. And then, right after they meet up, before they can really come to terms with that changed dynamic, Tahiri gets her brain scrambled up by the ‘vong. She’s made into a whole new person, and even as she represses that person, Riina is still there, and still part of Tahiri.

So now the whole Anakin/Tahiri thing has to develop with that. So now you’ve got a girl with two people inside her brain, and there’s some leaking, and Anakin also has to deal with the fact his best friend is a girl, and they’re in the middle of a war, and yeah, hormones. Hormones can be really bad…

But all things considered, I think the authors did a good job with it. Anakin just worked on being a good friend, and Tahiri just worked at not being crazy, and it all fell into place. *grins* That’s the bare bones, anyway. The point is, it felt really natural, like the progression of their relationship was meant to go that way. They changed, and their relationship changed too, and it didn’t feel forced. Would I have been an A/T shipper before the NJO? No, because the characters were still kids, still at that whole best-friend part of their relationship. The authors of the NJO, whatever their failings, did good work with A/T though, to the point where it almost seems inevitable.

Then Anakin dies, and it all goes to hell.

... and for what it's worth, in your 'fic, he's stayed dead.

So where does it go from here?

I guess, from my POV there are three strands here to think about - canon, 'fic and fandom, and your own thoughts... but, maybe you don't divide it up that way?

Well, as of DN3, Tahiri is an exiled ex-Joiner Jedi with remnants of an implanted personality in her brain whose best friend has been dead for nearly a decade. This is the state of canon at the moment. It’s not particularly pretty or nice, but it’s there, and we, as fans, have to deal with it. I know I’ve heard rumors that maybe, just maybe, they might bring Anakin back to life, but as time in the SW universe goes on, I find that less and less likely. The focus has moved off Anakin and Jaina, and onto Jacen, and with the upcoming LotF series I don’t see that changing. And fanon is reflecting that, to a point.

Right up to the end of the NJO and the beginning of DN3 there were plenty of Anakin/Tahiri stories in fanfiction, which is generally a reliable indicator of fanon’s feelings. Yet now, I don’t see much. The shipping has returned to its YJK roots, and Tahiri just isn’t in it.

I’m hoping – hoping – profic won’t forget Tahiri. She’s a wonderfully complex character and a great protagonist, and I’m hoping we’ll have many more stories to read about her. The way they’ve set it up at the end of DN3, I’m sure they will, but with profic, you never really know. As for fanfic, I’m betting that after people get bored of yet another Jag/Jaina fixit or more Jacen-takes-over-the-galaxy fic, they’ll remember a time when SW had sweet, innocent, non-creepy relationships, and begin writing Anakin/Tahiri again. At this point, it’s the only ship I can think of that isn’t bitter and manipulative, and that’s pretty sad for the SW fandom in general, because one of them is dead.

*nods*

There's a lot in what you just said that seems to imply a sense of something broken and needing fixed - but you seem determined to be rational and honest about the chances of 'fixing' A/T in canon...

In fact, you seem to be eschewing conventional agendas and aspirations entirely when it comes to discussing this.

Is that the point? Your most developed response in 'fic has been to create a free-form Jag/Leia 'ship out of the interpersonal ruins of the post-NJO...

(I assume that invites a brief answer, and that even if you do have some masterplan for how to fix the Galaxy, you'll not necessarily be wanting to share it - so...)

What motivates you to write your own 'fic? Beyond the mischief, of course...

*laughs* "Eschewing conventional agendas"? And here I thought I was being terribly boring and dull…

I write ‘fic for a very simple reason: I want to. Star Wars is literally this gigantic universe and there are thousands of people, places, and things to think about - *sighs* No, that’s not right…let me rephrase that.

Star Wars is about ideas. Almost every character I’ve seen has believed in something, whether it is the right to be left alone, or the right of people to live in peace, or even the right of humans to rule over all. You might not like the ideas they believe in, you might think they’re idiots or bigots or jerks, but they’re there. You can’t ignore it. And in a universe where people believe, a universe where every little choice affects the course of human events – well, can you imagine the possibilities?

And that’s why I write ‘fic. I want to push the characters into new situations, push them into conflict with each other, change the way SW works…and I guess that brings us to Jag/Leia and my plot to take over the galaxy.

I wrote the first post of The Older Woman on a dare, and I continued it because I enjoyed the dynamic. Jag is, well, Jag, and Leia (at least, when I wrote it) was still the same Leia, and it was interesting to see how they would work together. Because, yes, she’s old enough to be his mother, and yes, he used to date her daughter, and yes, they’re very different people. But it was still fun, and some of the more fun parts were how the other characters interacted with them and their romantic relationship.

As for my master plan to rule – I mean, fix the Galaxy…

It all has to do with pragmatism. A belief that a central government leads to more evil than good? The knowledge that the Jedi keep screwing it up, over and over again? The fact that I don’t mind killing characters to get the galaxy I want? I just feel that you have to be realistic about such things – and have the flexibility to roll with it.

The characters – the people – are falling into this pattern, and unless some non-Jedi character like Han, Wedge, or even Jag tries to make a save, I see another Empire on the horizon, except far worse. After nearly 100 continuous years of SW history, patterns are emerging: the continual problem of central government becoming tyrannical, the failure of the Jedi to understand why they can’t connect with the common people, and the tension between the Outer Rim and the Core, all of which are connected.

*shrugs* Speculation aside, fandom isn’t very cheerful right now. The superweapon-of-the-week period got mocked viciously, but there’s still something uplifting about that period. People fell in love, and they did things, and there wasn’t this general feeling of malaise like there is now. Characters made a difference in the galaxy – there wasn’t this awful feeling of inevitability. Now, almost every relationship I can think of off-hand has gone bad or just creepy, there’s some looming Sith threat, and I feel like nothing the characters do will change the overall ending. It just seems like a lot of the wonder has gone out of SW lately.

*nods sadly*

"We'll always have fanfic"?

Speaking of which, is there any 'fic that's particularly caught your eye to provide that... uplift... that DelRey seems to have lost?

A/T (or simply A or T) is always a bonus - but not obligatory!

At this point, I’d have to say InyriForge’s X-wing series has that old Star Wars feel – action, adventure, banter, romance – oh, and things blowing up. *laughs* I especially like that last part…Mostly, though, the fandom has gone back to relentless shipping and angst, and after a while, that gets a little old.

Honestly, though, I really like to read KotOR era fanfic. It feels like SW used to – hopeful and bright, with a big, long, stretch of uncertainty ahead. It’s got a good basic story, interesting characters, and the authors are generally pretty fun-loving and explosive-adoring. And, yes, that means something to me. There’s witty banter and political discourse and tactics, and yes, dammit, somewhat non-creepy relationships. What’s not to love?

Umm... Atton/Disciple? raised_brow tongue

But you're right. It's not as fun as it once was...

Does everyone take it too seriously now? Or is that just the zeitgeist?

*snorts* Oh, you’re a bad boy…*tries to look serious*

A lot of it is the feeling of the moment – DN3 was a very depressing book, in terms of both content and the overall style, and the fandom is reflecting that. You hear a lot of howls that sound suspiciously like "Why?!!!!" and the level of fixits in fanfiction have shot up tremendously, and quite of few fans of certain characters and ‘ships are being very defensive these days. It’s just the general anger and disappointment after the last round of books.

But to a greater extent, the fun has gone out of it, and that’s a shame. I remember, about a third of the way through the NJO, I would get my books in the mail and I would just look at them uncertainly for a few days. I didn’t want to read them, because it just wasn’t enjoyable anymore. I eventually would, but my reaction afterwards was always along the lines of ‘that sucked in so many ways, why did I bother reading this?’ Of course, there’s a peculiar pleasure to be found in complaining, but I miss the days when I would read a SW book and feel happy afterwards. I’m not asking for sweetness and light, just a general lifting of the darkness, and I don’t think I’m alone in asking for that, because I see the same sort of general complaints all over the boards now. DN3 brought it to a head, but it really started years ago during the NJO. People are…dissatisfied.

And that’s coming out in all sorts of ways. I remember a few years ago, SW fandom was probably the most civil I’d ever seen. Yes, there were shipper wars and character bashing and the general cattiness that comes with every fandom, but there were so many really nice people who were just as crazy about SW as I was, and it was a lot of fun to hang out with them. People compromised over stuff.

Now, though, you’ve got mod-problems and people are just rubbing against each other and the shippers are getting really vicious, and it’s enough to make a girl leave the fandom – if she cared, that is. *laughs* Fortunately, people are still bonded by their shared love of fandom, and there are always a few neutral players to keep the ball rolling, so I’m not gone yet. I have to see this thing to the end, after all.

*grins* Thanks. So, perhaps - people are looking for answers, rather than simply enjoying the experience?

And I notice you've not mentioned the Prequels once...

Yes, I’d have to say so. *tilts head* In the end, thinking too hard about how lightsabers work and how fast is a parsec is sort of nitpicky – after all, the main protagonist in SW uses what amount to magic powers… *grins*

As to the Prequels… I don’t usually think of the Prequels. They’re very messy in my opinion, and not very interesting. I know there are plenty of people who enjoy it, but after several years of seeing the summaries conform to "See Jedi insert-name-here save the day, with some big-name movie character providing support!" I lost the little vestigial interest I had. At this point, I just want to read Hard Contact and Outbound Flight, and I’ll be satisfied.

*shrugs* Where the Original Trilogy was a self-contained story with little hints of other characters, like Borsk Fey’lya and Boba Fett, the Prequels aren’t. We have Palpatine, Anakin, and Kenobi, and they’re the ones who get character development. Characters like Dooku and Padme, let alone that cyborg general who’s supposed to be very, very important, got the short end of the stick. It’s like reading a book with half the dialogue blacked out.

Hmm. That sounds like some 'fic I know... tongue

But speaking of 'fic, and characters - in your own work, it seems to me that there's quite a close translation between character-interaction and ideological dynamics; or maybe it's that ideological dynamics are just a form of characterization...

Would you say that's a fair analysis? Or is that just me overreading?

Well, yes and no. I don’t generally mean to set out to write them that way, but they always end up like that.

It’s just the nature of SW. SW is about belief in something – an ideology, a person, money… whatever it is, they believe, and I can’t help but insert that into my writing. There’s the obvious one of Empire vs. Alliance, Sith vs. Jedi, but there’s other, more subtle stuff. The tension between the Core and the Outer Rim, which is shown most clearly in the make-up of the Rebellion; various governmental philosophies duking it out through war and politics; and just plain personalities dominating the people around them. We even get gender and age gap!

And many of the characters in SW, while still being people, can also stand as a symbol for a particular idea. Throw them together with another character, one with an idea that is opposite, or even just slightly off-center their own, and it makes for an interesting story, an interesting debate.

Or, it could be that I’m just terrible geeky about the whole thing and I’m trying to hide it behind fancy words…*grins*

Long and short of it is, I don’t think you can separate the character from their ideals and beliefs. Then they wouldn’t be themselves, and where’s the fun in writing them anymore?

You just gave me a bunny... happy

But to steer away from Star Wars - what do you read when you're not in a Galaxy far, far away...?

A bunny, huh? What kind?

As for books…Ooh, that’s hard. Hmmm. I think ‘almost everything’ about covers it. I refuse to read horror books, just because they’re gross and give me nightmares. And I never read instruction manuals, because they never make sense anyway.

And I’m always reading the news. What can I say? I’m an information junkie. *grins*

*grins back*

One final question, then... what other 'fic would you recommend to our A/T'ish readership, and what other 'ships and concepts do you think are the ones to watch?

I know you've been working on some Exile/Bao-Dur stuff yourself... whistling

*laughs* I’ll get to that in a minute, actually…

Well, if your readers are still paying attention to little ole’ me, I’d say they should avoid anything with a YJK or NJO shipping tag like the plague. Many authors seem to live in this wonderful universe where Jacen isn’t a psychotic wretch, Jaina hasn’t taken over her current boytoy’s mind, and DN3 was just a lover’s quarrel between Jaina and her other official boytoy, Jag. I love alternate universe, but I prefer mine to be a bit meatier than a ‘ship fix.

However, insubstantial dreck aside, a lot of people are swinging back into the old-fashioned adventure story. The-Admiral is writing a mystery called "Oracle", Quiet_Mandalorian had a nice story featuring a Mandalorian OC, and as I said before, InyriForge is still writing her X-wing series, which are like the X-wing novels you never read but wish you had. Generally, just look for some stories that have more than shipping as their focus – after all, quite a bit of SW involves somebody blowing something up, or the bad guys getting beaten up by the good guys. Or, if you’re into darker stuff, look up some hard core AU stories. You know the ones…the Empire won, the Yuuzhan Vong came ten years too early, Thrawn is really a Jedi/clone/robot…*grins* You know what I’m talking about.

And there are alternate ‘ships. I love alternate ‘ships. They make life worth living, for without the constant, never-ending snark and scandal of, say, Jag/Leia, I would spontaneously combust. I’m not kidding…

OK, maybe I am, but I still love it. Currently, I’m pretty fond of Jag/Kyrn. Done well, it can be a very romantic pairing, in an understated, low key way, and even if it’s not romance, they have a good working dynamic. Fun to play with, y’know? And if girls with blue skin and glowing red eyes aren’t your bag…there’s always Jizz Horn. She seems to be the go-to girl for alt. ships at the moment, though I can’t see why. Personally, I don’t approve of a girl as under-aged as that doing stuff like that…but I’m sure other people will. *shrugs*

However, the ‘ship I love with the burning of a thousand suns, or whatever Anakin said to Padme in AotC, is Bao-Dur/Exile. I think that if people like A/T for the same reasons I do, they’ll like BD/Ex too, because a lot of the same dynamics come into play. Bao-Dur and the Exile are very capable, very complicated characters in their own right, but they just…do better together. Of course, whenever they are together, events of planetary destruction soon follow…*laughs* They just have this wonderful, complex relationship, and I can’t help that love that. There’s something very complicated, yet still easy about it.

Still, even if Bao-Dur/Exile isn’t your bag, I suggest y’all read KotORfic anyway. The KotOR fandom is only about three years old, so it’s a lot younger and more energetic than the rest of the fandom. Because of the very nature of the games, there’s a lot of interesting ‘fic in there – military, political, religious – and the characters are very interesting and well-defined.

"Military, political, religious"? You mean - STAR WARS! shock

And on that note, Elena, thank you very much for sharing your time and you're thoughts with us. You've been great!

Stay that way... and, maybe, try writing A/T, just for fun? raised_brow tongue

*grins* Well, maybe one day. I've heard they can do wonderful things with clones these days...

The magic continues
~Fanfic Reviews~

Revolution by YodaKenobi
Revolution is the first book of a series that replaces the Force Heretic series and the following books. The purpose of this first part is to bring back Anakin Solo in the most plausible way possible. The young Solo is told that he had been shaped by infidels, but doubt bubbles beneath the surface. His shaped persona is a warrior, so he leads a group of them to find material to build a lightsaber as ordered by Supreme Overlord Shimrra. Kyp, Wrev, Tesar and Alema Rar are trying to free a Shamed One in the hope to get some help for the war, and their way leads to Ombi'taer.

I especially enjoyed YodaKenobi's OC Wrev Caster, who is so perfectly worked into the continuity that you start to ask yourself how you could have missed his name in the profic. He has his flaws, edges and also his secrets. YodaKenobi makes these trillions of characters (canon and original) very plausible; and the action is spiced with humour and a hint of romance.

"Life Debt" by SkalenFehl
After reading the story "Life Debt" by SkalenFehl, I was struck by how similar it seemed to the Star Wars Tales short story "The Death of Han Solo", but unlike that story, this one is different in terms of how Chewbacca was both the Yeti and Big Foot - and there is no Indiana Jones popping in to say: "Hi." The pacing was good and story-wise it was well thought out. Han's death was very fitting in the way it was done, in that he died along with the Millennium Falcon, hence showing the connection between the two. Anakin Solo's death was also well done, it being the will of the Force.

The characterizations were right on cue, right down to Chewie going into self-imposed exile in grief. He blames himself for the deaths of two members of his family, and for never being able to fulfill his promise to Han of telling Leia how much Han loved her. It's a good short story and very sad.

I Hove You by Jaya Solo
In this short story, Jaya Solo weaves a heart-warming tale about Tahiri and a piece of jewellery that provides her with a connection to her past. Those readers familiar with Tahiri's family history will delight in the way Jaya throws in a few red herrings to keep them guessing, making it all the more satisfying when they figure out how she's linking it all up.

I especially enjoyed Jaya's style in this story, as it worked admirably to characterise the narrator - but I won't tell you more about this as it would spoil the surprise. All the characters are well-written, and very "human" with their strengths and foibles. I found it a very uplifting story, with some gently humorous and also quite poignant moments. It's most definitely a story I would recommend to readers, whether they are A/T fans or not.

"Promise To Live. I love you" by Imperial-Hippy
"Bend and Break", a song by Keen, is the basis of this vignette. Tahiri is suffering total loss due to the death of her beloved Anakin. Curled up, she is thinking how life with him was, could have been, and what will be. In the darkest moment she even considers suicide, but the memory of him tells her it would be wrong. She has to wait till the Force allows their reunion.

I liked the way it’s written. Even when it’s not a poem it still flows as such. The song and the story merge perfectly together. Imperial-Hippy finds a perfect ending for such a sad vignette.

Twogether
~art work by FalconFan~

FalconFan fell in love with the YJK throughout the novel series (all of the EU novels), particularly the Solo kids and Tahiri. Drawing them became, for this very talented artist, an exercise in imagination, for despite the literary descriptions, everyone tends to have their own mental images of what these young Jedi look like.

And sometimes, let's face it - a picture is "worth a thousand words."

FalconFan did portraits of both Jacen and Jaina, and then felt a need to do one of Anakin --but for some mysterious reason, despite his heroic characterizations, she really didn't want him to be alone in the drawing. So she did the logical thing - and paired him up with Tahiri.

And here they are - as I'm sure most of us would agree is THE way to visualise them - Twogether:

Feature Article
The Undying Bond: How many who admired the old style Jedi. He was confident, powerful, and Shippers Have Kept the A/T Love Alive

With the publishing of Star by Star came a crushing blow to a small, yet dedicated, group of Star Wars fans: the Anakin Solo loyalists, and, more precisely, the Anakin and Tahiri 'shippers.

Throughout the stories of the Junior Jedi Knights and later the New Jedi Order, Anakin Solo became a fan favorite of compassionate - traits that were exhibited most clearly in Conquest and Rebirth. He was a young man who came into his own during a time of war and made a name for himself that wasn't to be outshone, even in a family of legendary men and women.

Unfortunately, in Star by Star, Anakin Solo was slain as he led a strike team to Myrkr, a planet overrun by Yuuzhan Vong. Many Anakin fans read in horror, as the character they had come to love was brutally killed. Most were left in a state of denial, petitioning for the return of Solo and hoping that future books would bring about his resurrection. By many, this outpouring of fan appreciation was thought to be a short display that would quickly blow over.

Instead, the close-knit group of Anakin fans has continued to go strong, even growing in number. Not only have fans shown their solidarity by flocking to their word processors to create their own stories showing a living and breathing Anakin, they've also managed to keep the Anakin Solo/Tahiri Veila 'ship alive even now, five years later. Fans around the globe, ignoring the world of canon and the criticism of others in the Star Wars fandom, chose to continue the A/T romance through fan fiction stories.

Why do these characters evoke such emotion and dedication? Why do people with jobs and families, friends and school take precious time out of their lives to keep these characters and this relationship alive? To answer this question, we must go to the source: the writers themselves.

"It IS complicated when you try and explain what it is about [Anakin and Tahiri] that makes you want to keep writing them," says Tahi, a writer who's worked on such stories as Many Happy Returns and Warrior of the Light. "I think a lot of it is the way that the [Edge of Victory] duology built up our expectations. Plus - there's always something very warm and fuzzy-making about young love. I think Keyes' interpretation of them both was superb - so it made us WANT to know more. And as SbS made that impossible - we have to write it ourselves."

"It probably has something to do with our reactions to death, too," she continues. "Maybe we load into Anakin's death some of our reactions to the deaths of people we've known? Hence writing about him is cathartic."

Lonewolf89 replies with, "One of the reasons I continue to write Anakin and Tahiri fan fiction is because of all the untapped potential that still lives in their relationship. There are so many stories left to be told about the two of them, and I refuse to believe that [Star by Star] ended something that had barely begun."

"Another reason I still support this 'Ship is because it's Anakin and Tahiri. Separately they are both very interesting, complex characters. But, together... well, they truly are greater than the sum of their parts. Whether you discovered their relationship while reading the New Jedi Order or from your first reading of the Junior Jedi Knights, once you're hooked, you can't let a little thing like a supposed 'death' get between them."

"I can sum this up in one word: Anakin," states JDH3, author of The Sith Insurrection. "No, that doesn't mean I don't love Tahiri's character, because I do. But, like many fellow Star Wars fans, Darth Vader captured my imagination from Day One. With that said, I was thrilled beyond reason when Anakin Solo was brought into being. And the more times he was mentioned as being very much like his late grandfather, the more of a fan I became. Add that to his closeness to Han, and I was hooked.

"Anakin Solo was the tie to the [Original Trilogy] that I had always dreamt of. Then along came Tahiri, who was his ideal counterweight. I just saw so many stories just waiting to be told. And the idea of drawing parallels between Anakin and Padme and Anakin and Tahiri was too much for me to pass up."

"It was a chance to glimpse what might have been, with that trademark Solo roguishness thrown in. There was a boy named Anakin and a girl raised by Tuskens, which in itself was enough for me to want to know more about them. I saw an opportunity to tie together three generations of the Skywalker/Solo clan together, and that’s what I try to do. And there you have it in a nutshell."

"It was a long road to end up with Anakin/Tahiri," says Maggy when asked what attracted her to the couple. "Because of fanfictions I ended up rereading or actually started reading the [New Jedi Order books] concentrating on those two. I like to write Tahiri especially in hard times, it's kinda a relief for me then."

"Anakin and Tahiri work," adds Thrawn McEwok, another prolific fan fiction author. "Individually, they're great characters; together, something far more special - a lot of this, I think, has to do with Greg Keyes' writing in Conquest and Rebirth, though all the novelists involved played a part..."

"And then they went and killed him. In retrospect, Anakin's death has become a fulcrum in the Star Wars time-line... and what's come afterwards has, on the whole, seemed darker, more limited and pessimistic.

"Now some A/T 'fic (including some of the best) faces up to the events of Star by Star directly - but of course, that's not all there is to it. Over time, quite apart from all the pre-existing things they had going for them, A/T have come to symbolize "the good old days" - they're special enough that fans can still dare to hope for Anakin's return, and the 'ship thus represents the belief that Star Wars can be fun again!"

YodaKenobi also states that: "The main reason I have continued to write A/T after [Star by Star], is that I really enjoyed the dynamic between the two characters. For me, it was the most convincing relationship in the [Expanded Universe]. Most of the others are either overly mushy (to the point of unbelievably) or overly antagonistic (to the point they seem unhealthy). I thought Anakin and Tahiri in Conquest were a nice representation of young love, and it was exceptionally cute and fun to read."

"Another big reason why I choose to write it, is that I was extremely unsatisfied with the conclusion of Anakin and Tahiri's story in the canon novels. Fanfic gives us a chance to make things right."

So, there you have it. The common thread that motivated all of these authors is their deep love for the characters. A love that has acted as a springboard to bring these writers together and make them greater than the sum of their parts.

And this month's challenge is . . .
~by Whitey and 11Tahiri11~

Ladies and Gentlebeings, I present to you the (probably not) first ever A/T Fanfic Challenge! *polite clapping*

The challenge? To incorporate this item into an original short story involving our favorite couple:

an itsy-bitsy-teeny-weeny-yellow-polka-dot-bikini

The judges are:

Whitey, YodaKenobi and TahiriSoloFan

The rules are:

Well, not much. Just a few, shall we say, guidelines.

1) There is NO word limit. We're looking for quality, not quantity.
2) These are SHORT stories. No multiple post entries.
3) The above item must be relevant to the story. No passing mentions.
4) It can be any genre you want it to be. Humor, romance, action, you name it. Obviously, will find some challenges easier to incorporate into particular genres.
5) Both and Anakin and Tahiri must be actively involved in your story, though that's a given.
6) You will have one month to complete your story. All entries must be posted in the Beyond the Saga Forum by 12:00 AM Board Time on SUNDAY, APRIL 2. The topic must clearly indicate that you are an A/T challenge contestant.
7) All entries must also be PMed to each judge:
Whitey
YodaKenobi
TahiriSoloFan

This will make our job so much easier.

Judging:
Each judge will write a review and give a score out of 10 for every entry. All scores and reviews will be sent to me via PM, NOT posted on the boards. I will compile a summary of each judge’s responses and combine the scores for a total out of 30 points. Whoever has the most points at the end obviously wins.

The winner will be announced in this thread as soon as possible after I have compiled every score. I'll give everyone a heads-up beforehand.

Have fun, and any questions, PM me.

We heard it on the grapevine
~Maggy gives us a whirlwind tour of Anakin and Tahiri discussions in the Literature Forum~

"What does not kill us makes us stronger. What does kill us makes us stronger still."

With those words dp4m opened the Anakin Solo Discussion Thread, v2.0 three years ago. At first it was a thread to mourn our beloved character, and keep the hope up that with twisted faith he will be able to come back.

Somehow. Somewhen.

It’s a discussion place for the end of the beginning, and of Anakin’s completed part of his journey and the continuation of it.

With the release of Troy Denning's Dark Nest Trilogy, new hope for a return flared up, and with that hope came theories how Del Rey would do it. In the so-titled The Joiner Kingthread, it was thought that the mysterious call was actually from Anakin. This idea was brought up by Darth_Guy. During a discussion about The Unseen Queen, Thrawn McEwok threw in that Unu Prime is actually Anakin Solo. As a return theory Rouge77 considered the possibility of a clone theory, and also the idea that Anakin is hiding out from fear of meeting the family. The latest idea from Viracocha is that Del Rey creates an Alternate Reality and publishes it.

The discussion didn’t stay in the actual Anakin Solo thread, but spread into the Dark Nest book threads. To avoid a long search for book discussion threads or other important ones just check out The Literature Forum Index. It’s rather kept up to date by The2ndQuest. Also it can be found in an "Upcoming Release Dates" thread for Hardcovers, Paperback, Comics and Reference Books run by The2ndQuest.

"You must not laugh at me, darling, but it had always been a girlish dream of mine to love someone whose name was Anakin. There is something in that name that seems to inspire absolute confidence..."

This quote from Tahiri Veila leads Thrawn McEwok to his reasoning about "The Importance of Being Anakin." He brought some thoughts up already in the "Anakin Solo Discussion Thread", but those have filled out, and screamed out, for some further discussion. As proof that his mind is really in the gutter, there exists "Fan-theories and DN3."

For the romantics among us Conantheking opened the "Love stories. Recommendations?" thread. Go out and find love, at least in fiction.

On the other hand LeeKenobi posed the question of "Bloodthirsty Authors?" and brought up Star by Star and the decimating of the Jedi ranks. Fitting in to this topic Kyptastic wanted to know about "Deaths in the EU" and why they stir up so many emotions.

For those among us who are interested in EU characters and their famous look-a-likes check out 000's thread: "Alema Rar = Tea Leoni, and other actors as EU characters." Fitting to this there also exists an "EU Pictures" thread where users help other users find the right pictures. PrinceXizor thought that it would be nice to collect "The Official Foreign Covers."

And the sweets for the end - Charlemagne19, in his thread, wants to know "If you were in charge of continuity at Lucasfilm and could...", go out and change SbS.

~And JediAlly has his ear to the ground in the Literature and RPG Forums~

I've just completed a brief search of recent topics in the Literature Forums. The only threads where Tahiri was mentioned were the reviews of the recent Dark Nest trilogy, which detailed what happened to her in those books. As for Anakin and their relationship, they hardly receive a mention. There have been no topics focused on him or on A/T ever since the Anakin Solo memorial thread that was made when Star by Star came out - and I'm certain a lot of us posted on, or at least visited, that thread. It would seem that other than the A/T fanfics, which happen to be the specialty of many here, and this magazine, we're the only ones who are keeping the magic of Anakin and Tahiri alive on the boards.

But that's not really the case. In the RPG section of these boards, there's a thread called The Official (I've always wanted an official thread) Character Updates and New Character Stat Thread. In this thread, various TF.N members, especially those who are aficionados of RPG, have posted their fan-made RPG stats of SW characters who haven't had any stats made for them, or updates for those characters who do have them. The update reflects the new and revised rules presented in The Revised Core Rulebook and in the sourcebooks that have been published afterwards. They also incorporate any clarifications posted in the SW section of the [Wizards of the Coast website.

There are stats for Anakin on the third page of this thread. They were made around the time Return of the Sith came out in theaters and they're decent. While we may like them, only those of us who are RPG aficonados and have RPG material from Wizards of the Coast can understand the stats. As for Tahiri, there are no stats for her yet, but here's hoping someone, maybe even one of us who's also an aficionado of RPG, will post stats up for our favorite couple.

Related to this is something I found in the SWRPGNetwork Holonet Forums. In response to Wizards of the Coast's announcement some time ago that they have no plans for publishing additional SW RPG sourcebooks, NovaSpice from the SWRPGNetwork, announced on May 11, 2004 that he had been working on a revised NJO Sourcebook for the past two years. As of now, he's still working, but I believe the first chapters are almost ready to be released. It's thirty pages long, and there are no stats for Anakin or Tahiri on that thread, but it's worth the read because it gave me hope that his forthcoming work will be of top quality. Here's the address: http://holonet.swrpgnetwork.com/showthread.php?s=145f89a5dd3393a9e047f752827e0521&threadid=15520

Fierce beauty
~art work by FalconFan~

This time FalconFan focuses her artistic eye on Tahiri - and more precisely the Tahiri of The Final Prophecy. She says:
I really loved the descriptions of this young woman finally beginning to reconcile her newly-fused personalities and coming into her own as a Jedi Knight. I wanted to show this with the drawing: the sort of feral quality and reflexes that Riina gave her (thus, the cat-like crouching posture) coupled with her training and discipline as a Jedi.

I know that the forehead scar is incorrect (it's been pointed out to me a number of times, actually! lol!), but I went with my own vision of it based on the renderings I had seen of Nen Yim, with the elaborate and almost decorative scars and tattoos on her face... **shrugs** "Artistic License!"

And here she is - our, and Anakin's, Fierce beauty.

Once upon a time in a galaxy far, far away . . .
~the authors chat about what they're up to~

MAGGY says:

Despite my disliking of Valentine’s Day I wrote a little vignette ... but somehow the intended mush once again ended up as something rather sad, yet hopeful. Tahiri mourns about the loss of her beloved Anakin and finds hope in tales she had heard while she lived with the Tuskens. They believe that beloved ones become "Angels" and are watching over family and friends. The vignette is based on Robbie Williams' song of the same name.

A wee bit older is the vignette "Life is Pain". It was written after a personal loss and a very bad RL day. As the title already says, it’s about life and how it can be a pain. The blonde young woman who accepted her Yuuzhan Vong persona thinks about which views of life are more likely to be right.

JDH3 says:

The plot of The Sith Insurrection deals with Anakin Solo’s return in the guise of Lord Darth Martel, a Sith Lord apprenticed to Lumiya, former student of Darth Vader. There is lots of action, political conflict, and general drama, and a healthy dose of A/T - though anything even remotely resembling mush is delayed until near the end of the story. It’s a work in progress, and it’s novel length - 66 chapters to date.

The last few posts have dealt with a desperate attack by rogue Yuuzhan Vong who have been supported by the Sith. There’s a large-scale battle on Denon, capital of the Alliance, and smaller battles scattered throughout the galaxy.

Teaser...
Anakin’s fighter was still moving when he used the Force to leap from the cockpit into the Widowmaker’s hangar bay. Without him at the controls, the TIE fighter crashed into the hangar’s back wall, crushing eight Vong warriors as it did. Landing gracefully, his lightsaber already ignited, Anakin wasted no time in engaging the other warriors occupying the bay.

Specter of Hope, which is set between the Dark Nest series and LotF, is the story of Anakin in spirit form returning to try and prepare his family and friends for the threats to come.

The first couple of posts have shown Anakin’s continued longing for Tahiri and her feelings for him. Also highlighted is the tension between Han and Luke over Luke’s decision to exile Tahiri, Lowie, and Tesar Sebatyne.

Teaser...
She hung her head, her emotions threatening to bubble over. She felt lost and alone. Jacen Solo’s manipulation of her stung far more than she was willing to admit publicly. Ever since her banishment, Tahiri had begun to wonder if Anakin’s harsher accusations about his brother’s character hadn’t been right all along. She’d urged her love to make peace with his sibling, but more and more, she regretted having wasted her breath. Jacen hadn’t deserved her support then any more than he did now; she just hadn’t seen it.

The Smuggler King is a LotF AU where Han Solo is king of Corellia. Anakin and Tahiri are together in this, and, like most of my ‘fics, they’re featured characters.

Recent posts focus on the war that has come to Corellia. Need I say more?

Teaser...
Tahiri entered the quarters she shared with Anakin, a smile on her face. However, the second she crossed the threshold, she felt Anakin’s frustration in the Force. The sensation was so powerful that she was hard pressed not to make a face as it washed over her. He was sitting on their bunk, rubbing his temples so hard she feared he might draw blood soon.

Prime Numbers, another LotF era AU, tells what happens when Anakin and Tahiri, along with their friends and family, battle a resurgent Black Sun organization and a relic from the Clone Wars named Atha Prime.

Recent action features Anakin and Tahiri heading off to save an old friend, Uldir Lochett, and his Jedi girlfriend, Klin-Fa Gi.

Teaser...
Anakin Solo’s brown hair and Jedi cloak whipped out behind him as he stood atop one of Coruscant’s many Mag-lev trains, his lightsaber grasped in his right hand. The train sped along its track above the yorik coral bluffs that rose from the shoreline of Liberation Lake, most of its passengers completely unaware of what was transpiring above their heads. After all, the battle that was about to commence wasn’t about them, not directly.

And there, my fellow A/T fans, you have it. Lots of A/T goodness and general Star Wars mayhem for you to sample, should you so chose. With that said, I'll return you to your regularly scheduled programming.

YODAKENOBI says:

The Age of Heroes is a post-NJO AU that follows my stories The Living Force and Empire of the Hand. It centers round Anakin, Tahiri, and the rest of Solo/Skywalker clan after Callista Ming returns from the Unknown Regions with news that the Alliance is in danger. Anakin and Tahiri are sent to track down a mysterious being in the hopes that capturing him will reveal the secrets of this threat, and prove Callista right or wrong.

TAHI says:

I plead guilty to not being a very diligent writer lately, in that I've been a bit busy with a new job and other TF.N projects. However, I'm hoping now to be able to get back into a routine that does actually include finishing my A/T novel, Many Happy Returns, and adding some more to At the Oasis and Warrior of the Light. I did however manage to post a little viggie called "Beginnings" that links the end of Rebirth to Many Happy Returns.

Just for the record, Many Happy Returns began life as a short story intended to fill in the gap between Anakin's and Tahiri's adventures with Corran in Rebirth and the events of everyone's favourite novel - Star by Star. (Me sarcastic? Perish the thought.) I wanted to write a story that allowed me to show the developing relationship between Anakin and Tahiri - the ups and downs and the usual teenage angst - as well as fill in a little background to the construction of Eclipse. I also wanted to write an "after-story" for Remis Vehn and Qorl, whom I particularly enjoyed in Conquest.

Most of all I wanted to write a story that captured the spirit of the Original Trilogy, rather than the dark mood of the NJO. I don't know how far I've succeeded with that aim - but, myeh, at least I'm having some fun trying. LOL

Anyway, like Topsy - the story just growed! Which might explain why I'm still writing it three years after I started it! Hopefully soon I'll be able to move the characters from where they are stuck at the moment - in a somewhat nasty situation with a crazy Peace Brigade wannabe called Bomar Tag and his cronies, plus some renegade Yuuzhan Vong - into a situation where Anakin finally gets some time to figure out what Tahiri wants for her birthday.

And hey - you never know - maybe he and Tahiri will finally get to spend a bit of quality time together, without feeling they have to rush off and save the galaxy.

COURTNEY_SOLO says:

In my fics, it is probably all-out romance. NO! Not ALL-OUT, but ... I do not write ONE SINGLE Anakin/Tahiri vig/fic without some mush.

I once tried doing that. In Cursed Waters, I tried to write a non-romance A/T fic, but I couldn't do it! I eventually switched it to where they're married and stuff, and Tahiri was pregnant. It's quite an interesting plot, actually. I most definitely would encourage more readers.

Anyway, in Left Behind, I tried a new approach: Tahiri decided to stay with Sliven. OK, so I TRIED to write some Anakin alone, and some Tahiri alone, but I *drumroll* couldn't do it.

In this story, 15 year old Tahiri Veila summons the Jedi to Tatooine when a HUGE feud breaks out between the Tusken Raiders and the locals of Mos Eisley. (That just begins the story.) I have MUCH more written out for this fic, and I have even begun to work on the sequel, after completing Left Behind over my vacation in January. (It involves romance, action, a huge battle scene, and Anakin gets emotional!)

Betrayed started out as a completely J/Z fic - NO A/T planned. That didn't stay that way very long. There is A/T romance, particularly in the upcoming post (last one!). <- Last one meaning, with one more post, I will complete Betrayed. Anakin and Tahiri are left on Yavin 4 to babysit Jaina Veila Durron while basically everyone else goes to rescue Jacen.

In Completely Yours, Anakin returns from the "dead" and Tahiri almost refuses to believe him. I started this out as a vignette, but it quickly turned into a fic. The couple are going to be married, but some twisted force decided to try to separate them. That's as far as I'll go without spoiling the story, but I do have a LOT planned for this one.

My newest Anakin & Tahiri fic is called Over the Course of Time. It starts out with Anakin coming to the Jedi Academy. He meets a SHY girl named Tahiri. She is spooked by him because he was "accidentally" assigned the wrong room (Tahiri's), so when she opened her door and saw a strange boy sitting on her bed . . .

Anyways, a LOT of mush is planned for this one. Hehe.

Be sure to check 'em out!
