Editorial
Easter, equinoxes and A/T
Well here we are again, with our second issue of the (as far as we know) only TF.N magazine focused on celebrating Anakin and Tahiri. And in this season of the equinoxes and their various cultural celebrations, we hope to feed you some more of our own particular "chocolate" in the form of A/T sweetness. This issue is certainly jam-packed with enough variety to appeal to just about all tastes, from fanfic to gaming and art to scholarship.

First of all, we're excited to be able to bring you another inimitable Thrawn McEwok interview with one of our longest serving A/Ters - Lonewolf89, who has been the inspiration for many in the A/T fanfic community. I know in my case, Lonewolf was the first A/T writer I encountered at TF.N, and I will always be grateful for her generous support and encouragement.

Following this we have more reviews of both new and ongoing additions to the growing A/T corpus, and a real treat in the form of some beautiful and perceptive pieces of artwork by our guest artist - angel_gidget. Be prepared to be wowed!

Last month Lonewolf89 examined what it is about Anakin and Tahiri that compels us to keep writing about them, and in this issue she continues this tradition of insightful articles with a study of the unlikely friendship between Anakin and Vua Rapuung as portrayed in Conquest. What could a Jedi and Yuuzhan Vong have in common? Read and find out.

Something new in this issue - and which we hope to continue - is a little trip down memory lane in the form of favourite scenes from the profic books. This month Courtney_Solo shares a passage that has special meaning for her. And for those who are curious about the world of gaming, JediAlly presents the first instalment of a series of selections from the new edition of the RPG Source Book. In this first part he gives us some background on the terminology and definitions a gamer requires, as well as the stats the book now provides for both Anakin and Tahiri. This is an exciting development as it means gamers can now "play" with our favourite EU pair either by taking on their roles or by pitting themselves against them.

Courtney_Solo has more offerings from the ATindex for us, and it's great to see so many new stories. Is there a kind of A/T revival in process? Completely understandable, of course, and very exciting. Revival or not, there are still plenty of long-running stories still in progress, and some of the regulars along with a new A/T-er catch us up on what's going in their worlds of A/T creativity. Feel the love and find out what goodies they have to offer.

As you can see we have plenty for new and old A/T fans alike and for those who like to dabble in a little fun and adventure outside their usual character allegiances. Feel free to contact me if you would like to subscribe to the magazine - all it takes is a PM, and I'll make sure I PM you when each issue is posted.

Finally, I'd like to thank the team for a fantabulous effort this month, and we hope all you readers out there are "ready as rockets" for this April issue of Anahiri: Sound and Silence.

Interview with . . . LONEWOLF89

For this interview, we're graced by the presence of Lonewolf89, a young author with a disorienting amount of ability - writer of the A/T'rific stories From Faded Remnants and Beyond The Rim, a number of short pieces ranging in flavour from light and fluffy to dark and powerful - and also the Fire & Ice vignette series involving Anakin and Mara Jade.

So: Ms. Wolf, you're an avid A/T fan, but you're also obviously enjoying exploring specifically Anakin in all sorts of circumstances - anyone who's worried they'd be squicked by Marakin can take a peek at
In Its Place instead...

So, with that in mind: what's your view of Tahiri Veila?

*takes deep breath* This question was harder to answer than I thought it would be. But, here goes:
To me, Tahiri Veila has always been a bit mystifying. She's a very multifaceted character with a great deal of hidden depth that I can see more clearly as a reader than as a writer.

There's a lot of duplicity to her personality. On one hand, she's Anakin's bubbly and verbose sidekick, but, on the other, she's a young woman who's very strong and resilient in her own right.

For all of her skills and talents, though, I see her as being very unsure of herself. At the age of nine, she was take from the world she felt she belonged and placed into an environment that was so far from any she knew. That bred a lot of self-doubt that was only magnified by having Anakin in her life.

By being friends with him, she was surrounded by galactic heroes, hot-shot pilots, political giants, and Jedi Knights who had talent to spare. That left her floundering, trying to discover where she fit. She's not a warrior. She's not a pilot. She's not a burgeoning member of the Senate. It took time before she realized that she didn't have to be any of those, that she could find her own path.

I think one of the driving forces of her character is her honesty. She's straightforward. She doesn't have any lurking agendas, and she doesn't manipulate the people she cares about. She takes life as it comes, rolls with the punches, and doesn't over-complicate things.

Her Tusken Raider sensibilities have made her somewhat of a pragmatist. Take the war, for example; she doesn't agonize over life and death decisions in the same way as Anakin does. She solves problems in a very black and white way, rarely seeing the shades of grey that lay in between.

Overall, the dichotomy between her softer nature, and her more no nonsense attitude is one of the things that really draws me to her. I can't help but be fascinated by the young woman who we see tagging along on Anakin's heels one minute and overcoming Yuuzhan Vong shaping the next. She's a wonderfully chaotic blend of contrasts that really offsets Anakin's more compartmentalized tendencies.

It's wonderful to watch as she comes into her own throughout the Junior Jedi Knights books and later in the New Jedi Order. She's a character that's very distinct; an 'average' young woman who's made into a hero when thrust into extraordinary circumstances, and I can't help but draw parallels between her and Luke Skywalker's character in A New Hope.

Was that too long? worried

No, it was great. You really captured the dichotomy in Tahiri's
character - the vulnerability and the strength, the sensitivity and the deadly decisiveness, the Star Wars heroism and the everyday humanity...

So, moving on from there - what, in all that, makes Tahiri 'click' so well with Anakin...?

Tahiri and Anakin have become so inter-woven throughout the books, that it's hard to say where one stops and the other beings. Their personalities just lock together perfectly.

Tahiri's verbal acrobatics offset Anakin's monosyllabic stoicism. Her bubbly outgoing nature, act as a foil for his reserved observation. She gives of herself freely and without fear, which is a total contrast to his careful wariness in relationships.

She allows him to see, though her, the galaxy in a way he never could.

To Anakin, Tahiri represents everything good in the galaxy. She embodies all of the innocence and love that have been sorely lacking in his life. She's his grounder, the one person who can see in him all of his faults and weaknesses and all of his strengths and talents. She takes him as a whole.

His fears and doubts, his second-guessing and over-processing, she allows him to put all of that aside. She takes things at face value and makes him do the same. She trusts him completely, loves him unconditionally, and lets him be who he is. When everyone wants him to be somebody, she lets
him be just... Anakin.

So - although I know you've begun to answer the question already in that reply: who is Anakin Solo?

Short Answer: Anakin Solo is a cool, lightsaber wielding Jedi badass who's plagued by teenage angst and blessed with Corellian charm and Solo good looks.

Long Answer: Anakin Solo is, in many ways, the embodiment of the word 'hero'. He's fearless, big-hearted, courageous, and highly skilled. He's also mastered the snappy comeback thing (a product of Han and Mara's influence, I'm sure) which comes in handy when engaging in witty banter with an evil nemesis.

All (okay, most) joking aside, though, I believe, at his core, Anakin is a protector. He's very purpose driven. He needs a goal, something to drive him, and that need is often met by protecting the people he cares about.

Also, Anakin's a problem solver. He likes to analyze a problem and compartmentalize data. At the same time, however, he's not afraid to take action. He examines the big picture, makes a decision, and then follows through, usually, on his own.

Anakin's not a team player. Raised mostly by default, he had a lonely childhood, and he learned to adapt to that by becoming very self-sufficient. He likes to work alone, and when he's not, he prefers it when his role in the team is clearly defined, and he's left to himself to fulfil whatever responsibilities he's been given. One of his biggest faults when working as a part of a unit is his inability to communicate well with others. He pretty much does his own thing and expects everyone else to either figure it out or get out of his way.

Because of his tendency to play the role of the lone Jedi, his relationships tend to suffer. It takes people like Mara Jade and Tahiri Veila, who have strong, persistent personalities, to get him to open up and let them into his life. He doesn't choose friends and allies; they choose him.

Now, I could go into how Anakin's impossible expectations of himself bring about a feeling of insufficiency. I could go on about how his relationship with Tahiri is his greatest strength and his greatest weakness. I could further discuss how his relationship with Mara is probably the strongest outside influence in his life, and I could even mention how the deaths of Chewie, Daeshara'cor, and his 'failure' at Centerpoint have acted as fuel for his single-minded drive during the war. I could... but I won't. tongue

Well... I think that's pretty near definitive as statements of Anakin go... but at the end, you mentioned some things in the NJO - do I detect that you have opinions on the way the storyline was handled there?

Or, how do you tend to view the storytelling aspects of writing in
general, in the 'real' stuff and in fanfic - or even outside Star Wars!

I think storytelling as a whole has disintegrated quite a bit in the last few decades. Film-makers and writers depend too heavily on plot devices, high speed car chases, and flashy Kung Fu moves, and they've turned away from the most important part of good storytelling - the characters. (Not to say that I don't appreciate a contrived plot device... or an explosive multi-car
collision... or even overly done martial arts fight scenes, because I do. Just don't tell anyone. worried )

I've always felt that the most important part of a story should be the characters. They're what makes the plot and the action accessible to the reader/viewer. Some of the worst story lines can be saved if they're supported by believable, multi- dimensional characters.

I think that's one of the things that makes fan fiction often times superior to published works; nine times out of ten, fan fiction writers begin writing because they fall in love with a character and want to read more about that person. Because of that, they let the story support the individual, instead of letting the character act as a mirror for the story (This statement does not, of course, cover Mary Sues).

The reason I tend to post a lot of one shot fics (much to the chagrin of my readers, I'm sure) is because I feel that it gives me the best opportunity to deal with a story-line without losing the essence of the characters. A lot of times, in longer fics, characters can be lost beneath a sea of over-developed plot.

One of the best illustrations of the plot vs. characters style of storytelling that I can give is in showing the contrast between Conquest and Star by Star.

Conquest, while dealing with a very cool and epic plot line, was driven by the characters. It took the time to look at the thoughts and feelings that resulted from certain actions, and also paused to show how personal philosophies influenced the character's behaviours or choices, all of which helped the plot to unfold. As a reader, you never lost your connection to the story, because you were able to anchor yourself to the book through the characters.

Star by Star was different in that it focused more on the plot
itself. The characters were two dimensional, at best, and the moments of personal reflection on their part hindered the flow of story more than helped it. It was also filled with a number of characters that seemed to be more like superfluous, underdeveloped plot tools than contributing members of the story. What's worse, our well known and well loved heroes: Anakin, Jaina, Tahiri, etc, seemed to be simply diluted versions of their true selves. In the end, you couldn't connect to the book because there was no-one to connect through.

*ducks away from the attacks of the Troy Denning fans*

The characters are the heart of a story, no matter what that story is. Without them, true, well-done storytelling is impossible.

I'm not quite sure if that answers your question... but I'm going to force my opinion on you anyway. tongue

Well, it's a beautiful answer, and it seems to follow on from the question, even if it doesn't necessarily answer it...

(For balance, I'll add that I think Troy Denning was deliberately trying to show characters bent-out-of-shape by the situation, or reduced to exhausted ciphers... but no-one fell for A/T through reading
Star by Star, did they?)

But, I guess, this leads onto the question of the relationship between fanfic and the stories it's reacting to - you suggested, up at the top, that a lot of fanfic stems from a frustration with the inconsistent, plot-driven tendencies of the storyline...

Or is it just proprietorial fans thinking they know 'best', sometimes?

Hum. thinking There are those writers who 'think they know best', but, as a whole, I believe fan fiction writing stems from the desire to have more: more of the story, more of the characters, more development of one thing or another.

I know there are film-makers and authors who don't appreciate fan fic and consider it a distortion of their stories. In reality, it's simply appreciation. I wasn't attracted to SW fic because I wanted to rewrite George Lucas' work. I came to it because I love this world that he's created, and I wanted to add something, however small, to it.

Granted, I have done AU stories, which could be construed as my saying 'This is what should have happened.' However, it was more me wanting to explore the possibilities than change the 'canon' outcome. There are things about the books specifically that I didn't like (i.e. Anakin Solo's death or Jacen's portrayal in the New Jedi Order), but those things are still a part of the story, and you have to take the story as a whole.

Besides, it's those kinds of needling plot lines or characterizations that have fuelled the fires of fan fic authors, so can I really complain? When these seeming faults of canon drive authors like you or Tahi or YodaKenobi to create something, are they really faults?

blush Shush. You're right about Tahi and YK, though - and yourself! grin

So, continuing in that vein - do you have any fanfic (or even non-fanfic) recommendations for our readers? Anything you've enjoyed recently - A/T, obviously, a priority, but not obligatory! cool

Considering my 'Fan Fic Recommendation' list could become quite lengthy, I'll limit myself to stories I'm reading at the moment (most of which, I'm shamelessly lurking on. blush ).

The Age of Heroes by YodaKenobi is a great 'epic', that has all the fast-paced adventure and twisting intrigue of a mystery novel. My guilty pleasure is Fear and Love by pregnantpadme. I never seem to get enough of her love triangles, tongue and cheek humor, and excellent characterizations. I feel she's written 'grown up' Tahiri brilliantly.

Tahi's latest fan fic foray Bikini Detective is by far some of the best A/T work I've read. She crafts stories in the way that absolutely enchants her readers, and the relationship she creates between Anakin and Tahiri is beautiful.

I'm also enjoying a fic entitled Subversion by cough*Thrawn McEwok*cough ( wink ), and Cages by Inara. Both show very interesting and evolved looks at Anakin's character, and his relationship with a certain red-haired woman.

Thanks! And, I suppose, that last point raises a question: if A and T can't be A/T - and currently, in canon, he's inconveniently dead, of course - how would you make them happy?

Or, to put it another way: where do you think Tahiri stands now, and where could/should she go?

Well, as much as I may like the thought of Tahiri spending the rest of her life alone, pining for her lost love, that doesn't seem very realistic. tongue

Tahiri's a young woman with a great amount of inner strength and independence, qualities that I believe are only going to be magnified now that Anakin's no longer by her side to act as a balancer. I imagine her becoming somewhat of a wild child, a Jedi rogue, a very self-possessed individual.

Anakin's death, her experiences at the hands of the Vong, and her Tusken heritage have made Tahiri Veila into someone who doesn't like authority figures and resists the idea of being fitted into a mould. Because of this, if she remains a part of the Jedi Order, I see her as staying on the front lines, where the Jedi are needed most - quelling rebellions or forestalling civil wars, while steering clear of Council politics.

As for whom Tahiri would end up with, I really don't know. I don't see Jacen as a likely candidate, though, outside of certain fan fictions. His personality doesn't mesh well enough with hers. And I think the contentions that existed between Anakin and Jacen, would carry over to Tahiri and Jacen.

Of course. I say all this, but I haven't read any of the books past Star by Star, so everything I'm 'predicting' could be flying in the face of canon. grin

shock You've not! shock

I'd say you guessed pretty well, then!

You also mentioned Jacen there - based, I suppose, entirely on pre-Star by Star
reading and fanfic; and you also mentioned Mara, perhaps in a more positive light....

So building on that - do you tend to divide characters into "heroes" and "villains"? And, broadening the question - what defines the "wider world" of Star Wars for you?

To some degree, I probably do define characters as either heroes or villains. Though, more often, I think I simply categorize them as either protagonists or antagonists. In truth, everyone's a hero in someone's eyes. The Emperor was hailed by the Imperials, even though he used dark Force lightning to turn his enemies into bits of charcoal.

In any well-crafted character, whether he's an insane megalomaniac, or a peace-loving do-gooder, there should be some quality that a reader can admire or sympathize with.

And that brings me to your question of what defines the wider world of Star Wars. For me, it's a sense of hopefulness. I'm never left feeling as though a person or a situation is beyond hope. Whether it's in the fight to win back the galaxy from the Empire or the struggle to redeem Darth Vader, there's always a sense that everything, no matter how bad it seems right now, will turn out all right in the end.

That view may seem somewhat simplistic, and dismissive of the battle between light and dark or the symbolism of the chosen one. But, hope is really the one all encompassing trait of Star Wars that not only brings the story's characters together, but also brings me back as a reader and keeps me enthralled no matter how many years pass.

grin I like that answer!

So, heading off in a slightly different direction: what are your main influences as a writer, outside of Star Wars?

Are you prepared to tell us anything about your wider reading habits, or about anything else in your life that might influence your attitude or style?

When it comes to literary influences, I run a pretty broad spectrum. Oscar Wilde's stories never fail to enchant me. I can't get enough of his fantastic descriptiveness and vivid characters. I also love the psychology in Chuck Palahniuk's books, especially Fight Club with its choppy sentence structure and brevity. Frank Herbert's rich plot lines are very captivating. He creates complex relationships between his characters that I adore. And, I'm always left green with envy at Anthony Bourdain's writing style. He wields the English language like a Bruce Lee wields nunchucks.

As for real life influences? I suppose martial arts have had an impact. I've been involved in the sport for years, and the mentality has, I'm sure, carried over to my writing.

Oh? Any chance you could explain that a bit more - or should we just be content with what we can infer from the fact that you cited a wit, a sci-fi novelist, a mainstream author, and a chef...?

Couldn't you just take away from that I like witty, popular, sci fi-minded people who can cook? [face_curious] tongue

As far as martial arts goes, that sport has fuelled, in me at least, an appreciation for the art of the body, whether moving or static. When you're involved in something so physical, you begin to form an awareness of movement. There's so much you can tell about a person from their posture, the way they stand, they way they walk, and especially the way they fight.

Through our bodies, we telegraph thoughts, emotions, and drives. And I try, though I'm not sure I always succeed, to convey that in my writing.

I think you succeed. happy

And on that note, I think we can draw this interview to a close... unless, of course, the interviewee has anything else she wants to add...?

I'd just like to close by saying how much I appreciate A/T authors, and I hope people continue to discover these characters and are inspired to write more adventures for them. There are so many possibilities left to explore. happy

And, also, thank you, Thrawn, for being such a patient inquisitor. tongue This has been a lot of fun! You've asked some great questions and, as usual, opened my mind to new ideas. grin

blush It's been a pleasure. Thank you too - thank you very much indeed!

Now, enough of this interview stuff - back to the storytelling! tongue grin

A Boy No Longer:The Path of the Chosen by EH_Pilot
A Boy No Longer: The Path of the Chosen is an AU set after Star By Star, although it is so expertly written you will find yourself believing this actually happened in canon. In this story it was Jacen that died on the worldship, not Anakin, although Anakin was in bad shape. When Anakin wakes to find himself on Hapes he becomes worried; he then finds out what happened at Coruscant. This and the guilt he feels for his brother’s death pushes Anakin into the Dark Side, and he leads a personal vendetta against the Vong, with his sister and Tenel Ka behind him.

I love how Anakin is portrayed in this fic. He is so much like in canon or what the canon character could have been like under these circumstances. The comparisons between Anakin Solo and Anakin Skywalker are many and really help you envision this dark Anakin. It is a very powerful story and the story never drags or gets dull. In every post you find yourself caught up in the action, and at the end you are begging for more.

Dark Paths by Thrawn McEwok
Another Galaxy, Another Time...

SLOWLY, SHE DRAGGED HER MIND OUT OF THE DARKNESS,
unwilling to face the uncaring universe, but coaxed by the
knowledge that she was no longer alone amid the shadows of
her cell, spurred into awareness by the subtle, pressing presence
of the man who had come to mock her.

She was a prisoner, she remembered, sprawled supine on the
deck of an Energy Cage in a featureless cell aboard a nameless
Dungeon Ship, twitching and shifting in pain, mouthing
wordless whispers of delirious protest.

I am a Jedi Knight, she told herself. The last of the Jedi, for
all I know. But as long as I stay alive, the Jedi Order lives with
me.

So begins Dark Paths, one of the most imaginative and eloquent fanfics I've had the pleasure of reading. It's one of those unique stories that defies categorisation, tripping gracefully from drama through action to romance - at times poetic, at times realistic, and always provocative. Suffice to say that it's informed with a deep love for the essence of Star Wars - in other words, the eternal search for those things which are true and enduring, and which bring balance in a sometime indifferent universe. It's a story about obsession and corruption, but also about the ultimate victory of love. It's a story that explores the dark side of the psyche and the twisted and manipulative processes employed by both those who fear loss of power or who lust for it.

It's also a story you really need to make time to read, because any effort to capture it in a review is predestined to fall short. I'd go so far as to describe it as an experience rather than a fanfic - one to be savoured to the full. The language is a banquet in itself, and the imagery is, to quote the very quotable Vladimir Nabokov, something you want to roll on "as a grateful mongrel on a spot of turf fouled by a Great Dane." (Woof!)

One of the many things the story does well, in my opinion, is make us, as readers, question the way the whole Star Wars fabric was reworked in the NJO. Whether you're a fan of the series or not, I think most readers would agree on one thing - it's dark. And with that darker atmosphere comes a somewhat ambiguous view of the Jedi who at times seem to have forgotten the Force they supposedly serve. The profic writers treated us to a galaxy in crisis, its mores eroded by political infighting and loss of vision. We cringe at Luke's apparent failure to assume a proactive role, and many of us felt more than a little unnerved by the similarity between the Jedi's contemporary situation and that of the Jedi of the Clone Wars era. As a result, we rejoice in the story of Anakin and Tahiri, which really is the one bright light until, of course, that is cruelly snuffed out in Star by Star.

Dark Paths explores these ambiguities to the full, extending them to the nth degree to show a galaxy not only out of balance, but off-kilter, in which nothing is what it seems, or if it is, you wish that it wasn't. You are both unsettled and tantalised by the various situations of the main characters. Like Jaina, in the opening scene of the story, you wonder what has gone wrong, and what has happened to the idealistic vision that once energised those we deemed "the good guys".

But, as the title suggests, the story is a journey, or perhaps I should say a series of individual journeys - hair-raising, exhilarating and at times bloody - leading Jacen, Jaina, Jag, and primarily Anakin and Tahiri to truth and balance. Interwoven into their journeys is that of Gry Falconer, a character created by the author who acts to a great extent as the eyes, voice and imagination of the reader - the average Joe or Jane Star-Wars-Fan. Like us, Gry willingly allows himself to be caught up in the world of Star Wars and, fascinated by it, at times appalled by it but, willing to do anything to make it "work", he battles valiantly alongside his heroes. Self-defacing and awkward in his noticeably medieval armour, he's an endearing character who is made even more sympathetic by his undying loyalty to Tahiri.

As I stated above, Dark Paths is a very challenging story, and one that raises far more points than I have mentioned here. But accept these as a taste at least - which is after all the purpose of a review.

To enjoy the menu to the full, I suggest you sample it for yourself.

The Sith Insurrection by JDH3

In this AU, JDH3 tells the story of a post-NJO galaxy that finds itself embroiled in a conflict even more horrific than the Yuuzhan Vong invasion. Anakin Solo is alive, thanks to the Dark Lady Lumiya, who has enacted a plan to raise the Sith to power and destroy the Alliance from all directions, while the Solo and Skywalker clans, along with Tahiri, Jag, Kyp, and an amazing cast of characters try to prevent it. A mysterious Dark Lord known as "Darth Martel" emerges from the shadows to execute the Sith plot, in a story that takes readers from the galaxy's seedy underbelly, to sweeping space battles and lightsaber duels.

"The Sith Insurrection" is an emotional tale which pits family members against each other in a fight for survival, and a brilliant mystery that slowly unravels, leaving you guessing to the end. JDH3 deftly handles an intimidating dramatis personae while creating a story that's an epic in every sense of the word. The action in TSI is incredibly thrilling, and the characterizations are terrific. It's simply a lot of fun to read and one of the best stories to ever be posted on TFN, with a plot that will have anyone on the edge of their seat, particularly A/T fans.

This work is still in progress but rapidly speeding to its climax, so it's a great time to jump in if you haven't already been reading.

Anakin & Tahiri - a world of their own

angel_gidget says this about her picture:
"I had the pose drawn, and wanted to try a new set of characters to
work with. It was the first Anakin/Tahiri pic I'd done in a very long time, and I think it came out rather cute, even if I didn't give Tahiri bare feet."

And I think you'll agree with her totally.

Odd Couple: The Unlikely Alliance of Anakin Solo and Vua Rapuung

Vua Rapuung: Then you saved my life. How disgusting. How unfortunate.

Anakin Solo: No, don't gush on so. It was nothing, really.

In Conquest, the first book in the Edge of Victory duology, an unexpected alliance is formed between Anakin Solo, the heroic Jedi son of Han and Leia, and Vua Rapuung, a shamed Yuuzhan Vong warrior. The two cross paths as Anakin is fighting his way across the overrun planet of Yavin 4 in an effort to save his childhood friend, Tahiri Veila. He is wounded and cornered by two warriors when Vua Rapuung appears out of the Massassi jungle, killing his attackers.

Vua Rapuung was once a member of the elite Warrior Caste but has now been deemed a Shamed One after the Shaper Mezhan Kwaad forced his body to reject the implants and scars of his rank. In an effort to exact revenge, he joins Anakin in hope of slipping through enemy lines and facing the one who tainted him.

But the two begin their journey on rocky ground.

Anakin is puzzled by the fact that Vua Rapuung has turned on his people. The Yuuzhan Vong philosophy confounds him as does his new ally's fervent adherence to it. At the same time, Vua Rapuung struggles with the reality of working alongside one he deems an infidel, and, even worse, a Jedi.
Nevertheless, ignoring their differences, they plunge into the heart of Yuuzhan Vong territory side by side.

One of the major turning points in their relationship takes place when they are on the run from Yuuzhan Vong scout ships. Anakin ignites a fire, which Vua Rapuung believes to be the 'first abomination', to help cover their retreat. Only, the flames begin to consume the Massassi jungle at a massive rate, causing the warrior to collapse from the smoke and heat. It's Anakin who uses the Force to get both of them to safety, much to Vua Rapuung's chagrin and begrudging appreciation.

As time passes, a shaky trust begins to grow between these two. While crawling though damutek roots, facing off against hundreds of warriors, and playing the roles of Shamed and Slave, there forms something akin to understanding, and dare we say... respect.

Anakin learns to look past the brutal savagery of the Yuuzhan Vong culture and see, for the first time, the intricacies of a warrior race. He finds honor, friendship, and even love where he once saw only a faceless horde.

In turn, Vua Rapuung is awakened to the possibility that not all of those who reject the gods of his people are inferior. And, he glimpses beyond the blasphemies of an alien galaxy to discover that some things are universal.

In the end, only one escapes from the planet. The other dies to cover his flight. But there on Yavin 4, a planet brought to ruin, enemies become allies and aliens become brothers. When the moment of truth arrives, Anakin Solo, Jedi Knight, stands beside Vua Rapuung, Yuuzhan Vong Warrior. They unite against a common foe and honor the oaths they made to each other.

And this month's challenge is . . .
~by Whitey~

Ladies and Gentlebeings, I present to you the second A/T Fanfic Challenge! *rowdy cheers*

The challenge? To incorporate this item into an original short story involving our favorite couple:

a japor snippet

The judges are:

Whitey, YodaKenobi and TahiriSoloFan

The rules are:

Well, not many. Just a few, shall we say - guidelines.

1) There is NO word limit. We're looking for quality, not quantity.
2) These are SHORT stories. No multiple post entries.
3) The above item must be relevant to the story. No passing mentions.
4) It can be any genre you want it to be. Humor, romance, action, you name it. Obviously, will find some challenges easier to incorporate into particular genres.
5) Both and Anakin and Tahiri must be actively involved in your story, though that's a given.
6) You will have one month to complete your story. All entries must be posted in the Beyond the Saga Forum by 12:00 AM Board Time on May 25. The topic must clearly indicate that you are an A/T challenge contestant.
7) All entries must also be PMed to each judge:
Whitey
YodaKenobi
TahiriSoloFan

This will make our job so much easier.

Judging:
Each judge will write a review and give a score out of 10 for every entry. All scores and reviews will be sent to me via PM, NOT posted on the boards. I will compile a summary of each judge’s responses and combine the scores for a total out of 30 points. Whoever has the most points at the end obviously wins.

The winner will be announced in this thread as soon as possible after I have compiled every score. I'll give everyone a heads-up beforehand.
Have fun, and any questions, PM me.

Thanks for the Memories
~This month’s contributor is Courtney_Solo~
Courtney's choice, which is taken from page 1 of The Golden Globe by Nancy Richardson, could literally be said to be the scene that started it all.

Nothing could have prepared him for the girl who stood before him. Her pale blond hair moved in swirls as if an invisible wind was stirring it. Her eyes, as they met his own ice blue ones, sparkled in delight. There was no shyness in the smile that crinkled the corners of her eyes and made their deep green color dance in waves. Anakin said nothing. He was lost for a moment in the events that had brought him to this place. That had brought him to this room. And this girl.

I like this paragraph simply because it has so much ... promise. You can see Anakin likes her, immediately, and (as we learn later) not just as a friend. The descriptions are (almost) perfect, and his reaction is truly his character. Tahiri is also described perfectly (I think) and Anakin's thoughts are well portrayed without making them actual dialogue.

Anakin & Tahiri - rainbow duo
~art work by angel_gidget~

angel_gidget explains:
"I basically wanted an excuse to tinker with backgrounds some more. I'd had fun drawing that earlier A/T pic that I did, and wanted to do another."

Hands up if you want her to do some more tinkering?

RPG Report: Instalment One
The first part of an in-depth look at the world of RPG gaming, with selections from the RPG Source Book. The initial sections provide background definitions so that fans of Anakin and Tahiri can understand the stats relating to their gaming characters.

[Please note that all information presented here comes from West End Games Star Wars Roleplaying Game Core Rulebook. All copyright legalities belong to them.]

Ability scores:
Strength (Str) – Strength measures your character’s muscle and physical power. You apply your character’s Strength modifier to the following:
-Melee attack rolls
-Damage rolls for melee and thrown weapons (Exception: Grenades don’t have their damage modified by Strength.)
-Climb, Jump, and Skill checks, and any other skill checks using strength as the key ability
-Strength checks (for breaking down doors and the like)

Dexterity (Dex) – Dexterity measures hand-eye coordination, agility, reflexes, and balance. You apply your character’s Dexterity modifier to the following:
-Ranged attack rolls, such as with blasters
-Defense, provided the character can react to the attack
-Reflex saving throws, for avoiding grenades and similar attacks
-Move Silently, Hide, and Pilot checks, and other skill checks using Dexterity as the key ability

Constitution (Con) – Constitution represents your character’s health and stamina. Constitution equals a hero’s wound points. You apply your character’s Constitution modifier to the following:
-Each die roll for gaining additional vitality points (though a penalty can never reduce a vitality point roll below 1 – that is, a character with vitality points always gains at least 1 vitality point each time or she goes up a level)
-Fortitude saving throws, for resisting poison and similar threats
-Most Control-based Force skill checks

If a character’s Constitution changes, his or her wound points should also increase or decrease accordingly.

Intelligence (Int) – Intelligence determines how well your character learns and reasons. You apply your character’s Intelligence modifier to the following:
-The number of languages your character knows at the start of the game
-The number of skill points gained each level. (But your character always gets at least 1 skill point per level.)
-Search and Knowledge checks, and any other skill checks with Intelligence as the key ability
-Most Alter-based skill checks

Wisdom (Wis) – Wisdom describes a character’s willpower, common sense, perception, and intuition. Compared to Intelligence, Wisdom is more related to being in tune with and aware of one’s surroundings, while Intelligence represents one’s ability to analyze information. You apply your character’s Wisdom modifier to the following:
-Will saving throws (for negating certain Force attacks)
-Listen, Spot, Sense Motive, and Treat Injury checks, and any other skill checks using Wisdom as the key ability
-Most Sense-based Force skill checks

Charisma (Cha) – Character measures a character’s force of personality, persuasiveness, personal magnetism, ability to lead, and physical attractiveness. It represents actual strength of personality, not merely how others perceive you in a social setting. You apply your character’s Charisma modifier to the following:
-Bluff, Diplomacy, and Disguise checks, as well as other skills using Charisma as the key ability, and checks representing attempts to influence others.

Jedi Guardian
Force-users trained in the Jedi tradition, characters of this class combine physical training with mastery of the Force. Jedi guardians concentrate more on battle prowess, defense, lightsaber training, and physical activities. If Jedi consulars are the ambassadors of the Jedi Order, guardians are the defenders, protecting the Republic from all dangers. Few are strong enough in the Force and have the devotion to walk the Jedi’s path, but those few are awarded with a powerful ally. They walk in a larger world than those who neither feel nor heed the Force

Exploits:
All Jedi guardians journey into the galaxy at large to further their own knowledge and to help those in need. They take their understandings seriously, considering even mundane missions to be personal tests. Most Jedi guardians follow the light side, but some become dark-siders and use the Force for evil or selfish intent. Those imbued with the light side refrain from using the Force for every task, preferring to find other solutions and save the Force for when it is truly needed. Those who succumb to the dark side use every advantage, wielding the Force to solve problems as a soldier would use a blaster to destroy a stingfly.

Characteristics:
The Jedi guardian’s strength flows from the Force, granting the Jedi guardian special powers. This character first masters the ability to feel the living Force in the world within him, as typified by the Control feat. Constitution and Dexterity are the most important abilities for the Jedi guardian, followed by Intelligence.

Background:
A Jedi guardian typically starts out as a Padawan learner attached to a higher-ranking Jedi Knight or Jedi Master. The Jedi guardian finds that the Control powers come more easily to him or her, and has a genuine desire to use the Force to help the people in the galaxy. A guardian has a deep connection to his or her mentor and the Jedi Order but often operates with only tangential contact with either Master or Order.

Game Rule Information
Abilities:
A Jedi guardian should be gifted in all abilities, but Constitution and Dexterity are most important. Strength is useful for the Jedi guardian’s athletic skills. Wisdom and Intelligence are the backbone of important Force skills.

Vitality:
1d10 plus Constitution modifier per level.

Class Skills:
The Jedi guardian’s class skills, and the key ability for each, are as follows: Battlemind (Con), Climb (Str), Computer Use (Int), Craft* (Int), Empathy (Wis), Enhance Ability (Con), Force Defense (Con), Force Stealth (Con), Friendship (Cha), Heal Self (Con), Intimidate (Cha), Jump (Str), Knowledge* (Int), Profession* (Wis), Tumble (Dex)
*This skill actually encompasses a number of unrelated skills. Each time this skill is learned, a specific category must also be chosen. Examples include Craft (droid construction), Entertain (kloo horn), Knowledge (Jedi lore), and Profession (droid programming)

Skill Points at 1st level: (4 + Int modifier) _ 4.
Skill Points at Each Additional Level: 4 + Int modifier.

Jedi guardian class features:

Base attack bonus:
On an attack roll, apply this bonus to the 1d20 die roll. The value of this bonus is the same as the character’s level. For example, a 3rd level Jedi guardian has a base attack bonus of +3. At 6th level, the bonus becomes +6/+1. This means the Jedi guardian can make two attacks in one round. The first attack receives a +6 bonus, while the second attack receives a +1 bonus. At 11th level, the bonus becomes +11/+6/+1. At 16th level, the bonus becomes +16/+11/+6/+1. If the character has more than one class, the base attack bonuses for each class are cumulative.

Base Save Bonus:
Similar deal with the base attack bonus, but these rolls are made against a Difficulty Check (DC). If the roll is equal to or greater than the DC, then the character succeeds. Otherwise, the character fails. Bonuses are also cumulative for characters with more than one class. The Jedi guardian receives a bonus of +2 to his or her Fortitude and Reflex saves at 1st level, +3 at 2nd level, and this bonus increases by 1 every two levels afterwards. As for his or her Will saves, the bonus is +1 at 1st level, +2 at 2nd, +3 at 5th, +4 at 7th, +5 at 10th, +6 at 12th, +7 at 15th, +8 at 17th, and +9 at 20th.

Jedi guardians receive special class features at the following levels:
At 1st level, the Jedi guardian receives the following feats for free: Control, Force-sensitive, Weapon Group Proficiency (blaster pistols), and Weapon Group Proficiency (simple weapons). The Jedi guardian also receives a lightsaber from his or her teacher, but when he or she uses the lightsaber, a -4 penalty is applied to the attack roll.

At 2nd level, the Jedi guardian gains the Exotic Weapon Proficiency (lightsaber) feat.

At 3rd level, the Jedi guardian gains the bonus feat Alter, which grants the Jedi guardian access to Alter-based class skills.

At 4th level, the Jedi guardian gains the bonus feat Sense, which grants the Jedi guardian access to Sense-based class skills.

At 7th level, the Jedi guardian graduates from Padawan learner to Jedi Knight and gets a bonus knight feat. This bonus knight feat must be drawn from the following list: Force Mastery, Knight Defense, Knight Mind, Knight Speed, or Weapon Focus (lightsaber). The Jedi guardian must meet the prerequisite for the feat to select it.

At 13th level, the Jedi guardian graduates from Jedi Knight to Jedi Master and gets a bonus master feat. This bonus master feat must be drawn from the following list: High Force Mastery, Master Defense, Master Mind, Master Speed, or Weapon Focus (lightsaber). The Jedi guardian must meet the prerequisite for the feat to select it.

A lightsaber normally inflicts 2d8 points of damage. As the Jedi guardian gains experience and goes up in levels, he or she becomes more adept with the lightsaber. As a result, when the Jedi guardian strikes a target with a lightsaber, not only is the base 2d8 points of damage inflicted, additional damage is also inflicted. At 5th level, this additional damage is +1d8. At 10th, the additional damage is +2d8. At 15th, the additional damage is +3d8, and at 20th, the additional damage is +4d8.

Defense Bonus:
All characters have a natural defense rating of 10. The defense bonus is added to this. Other bonuses, such as dexterity bonuses, armor, and certain feats will stack, but the armor will penalize a character’s initiative, speed, and certain skill checks. At 1st level, the Jedi guardian has a defense bonus of +4, +5 at 2nd level, and this bonus increases by 1 every two levels afterwards.

Reputation:
This is a bonus that represents how famous a character is. The higher this number, the more likely people will help the character in question. Performing actions that attract attention will increase this number. Jedi guardians receive a +1 bonus to their reputation at 1st level, +2 at 5th level, and this bonus increases by 1 every four levels afterwards.

Credits:
A 1st-level Jedi guardian starts play with (1d8+3) _ 100 credits.

Initiative:
This indicates the order in which characters act, from highest to lowest. Those with a higher initiative starts earlier in the round. This number is based on the Dexterity bonus, and can be increased by certain feats.

Vitality Points (VP) and Wound Points (WP):
These tell you how much punishment your character can take before dropping. Vitality points represent the character’s ability to resist the nastier effects of being hit in combat, turning a lethal hit into a near miss. As your character lose vitality points, your character can become fatigued and less able to avoid potentially deadly attacks. Vitality points are based on the class, level, and Constitution modifier of the character.

Wound points represent the character’s capacity to withstand physical trauma. Wound points are based on the Constitution score.

When the vitality points reach 0, the character is fatigued. The character must also make a Fortitude saving throw against a DC of 10, or he’ll be stunned for 2d6 round.

When the wound points reach 0, the character is unconscious and dying. The character must make a Fortitude save every hour (DC 10 + 1 per hour of unconsciousness). If the save fails, then the character dies. If successful, the character must make another check in an hour. If the check succeeds by 10 or more, or if the roll is a natural 20, the character stabilizes and is no longer in danger of dying.

Attack rolls, saving throws, and skill checks are combinations of three numbers, each representing a different factor:
- a random factor (the number you roll on 1d20)
- a number representing the character’s innate abilities (the ability modifier)
- a bonus representing the character’s experience and training, which depends on the character’s class and level.

Atk:
There are two kinds of attacks – melee and ranged. Each of them has a bonus, and both of them are based on the base attack bonus. You add the Strength modifier to the base attack bonus to get the melee attack bonus, and the Dexterity modifier to the base attack bonus to get the ranged attack bonus.

Skills
Class Skills:
A character gets a certain number of skill points every time he or she gains a level. First level characters, however, receive four times this amount. When a character gains a certain level, he or she can purchase “ranks” for a certain skill, which increases the bonus a character receives when making a skill check for that rank. Skills that are class skills can be purchased for one skill point. In other words, if a Jedi guardian wants to purchase a rank in Jump, he or she needs to spend one skill point. Skills that aren’t listed in the class skills list are cross-class skills. If the character wishes to purchase a rank in one of these cross-class skills, he or she must spend two skill points.

Most of these skills have a key ability associated with it in parentheses. This means that when making a skill check the associated ability’s modifier is applied to the check.

These skills can be placed in two categories – normal and Force skills.

Normal skills
Climb (Str)
Armor Check Penalty:
Your character uses this skill to scale a cliff, to get to a window on the second story of a building, or to climb up an antenna array after falling out of an airway at the bottom of a floating city. Wearing armor imposes a penalty on this skill. While climbing, the character loses the Dexterity bonus to his or her Defense. This skill can be used untrained. Your character can have no ranks in this skill, but can make skill checks normally.

Computer Use (Int)
Your character uses this skill to operate computer systems and write or modify computer programs. Computer Use is used to access datapad programs, networked computer systems, droid programming, ship computers, and to operate computerized devices such as various ship systems (sensors, comm. units, starship weapons, and starship shields). This skill can be used untrained. Your character can have no ranks in this skill, but can make skill checks normally.

Craft (Int)
Your character is trained in a craft, trade, or art such as electronics, painting, sculpture, manufacturing, weaponsmithing, starshipmaking, carpentry, computer technician, droid repair, or other endeavor that actually creates a finished product. This is actually a number of separate skills. A character can possess multiple Craft skills, each with its own ranks, each purchased as a separate skill. This skill can be used untrained. Your character can have no ranks in this skill, but can make skill checks normally.

Intimidate (Cha)
Your character uses this skill to get a bully to back down or to make a prisoner give you the information you want. Intimidation includes verbal threats and body language. This skill can be used untrained. Your character can have no ranks in this skill, but can make skill checks normally.

Jump (Str)
Your character uses this skill to leap over pits, vault low fences, or reach a tree’s lowest branches. If a character has five or more ranks in the Tumble, the character gets a +2 synergy bonus on Jump checks. This skill can be used untrained. Your character can have no ranks in this skill, but can make skill checks normally.

Knowledge (Int)
Like the Craft skill, Knowledge actually encompasses a number of unrelated skills. Knowledge represents a study of some body of lore, possibly an academic or even scientific discipline.

Profession (Wis)
Your character is trained in a livelihood or a professional role, such as bartender, cook, moisture farmer, herbalist, spacehand, trader, doctor, slicer, engineer, mechanic, lawyer, law officer, computer programmer, droid programmer, etc.

Here’s a way to distinguish this from Craft skills – if the occupation is a service industry, it’s probably a Profession skill. If it’s in the manufacturing sector, it’s probably a Craft skill. Your character must have at least one rank in this skill before your character can use it.

Tumble (Dex)
Armor Check Penalty:
Your character can dive, roll, somersault, flip, and so on. This can’t be used if your speed has been reduced by armor or excess equipment.
A character with five or more ranks in this skill gains a +3 dodge Defense bonus when executing the fight defensively standard or full-round action instead of a +2 dodge Defense bonus. He also gains a +6 dodge Defense bonus when executing the total defense standard action instead of a +4 dodge Defense bonus. Your character must have at least one rank in this skill before you can use it.

Force skills
Battlemind (Con)
Trained only:
(Requires the Force-Sensitive and Control feats)
Your character can increase his or her prowess in combat, using the Force to enhance his or her concentration and commitment in battle.
Vitality Point Cost: 2 plus _ your Force-user level.

Empathy (Wis)
(Requires the Force Sensitive feat)
Your character can reach into the Force to read a target’s surface emotions, getting a sense of the target’s general state of mind. Success also grants a +4 Force bonus to any checks made against the target within the next 10 rounds (1 minute) using the following skills: Bluff, Diplomacy, Handle Animal, Intimidate, Entertain, and Sense Motive.

A roll of 10-14 gives a +2 bonus. 15-19 gives a +4 bonus. 20-24 gives a +6 bonus. 25-29 gives a +8 bonus. 30+ gives a +10 bonus.
Vitality Point Cost: 2

Force Stealth (Con)
(Requires the Force-Sensitive and Control feats)
With this skill, your character can use the Force to avoid both physical and Force-based detection. A successful check grants your character a Force bonus to any checks that involves escaping detection, such as Hide and Move Silently checks, and Will saves against an opponents See Force or Telepathy checks. A roll of 10-14 gives a +2 bonus. 15-19 gives a +4 bonus. 20-24 gives a +6 bonus. 25-29 gives a +8 bonus. 30+ gives a +10 bonus. Once successful, your character doesn’t need to check again, but he or she must spend a vitality point to maintain it every ten minutes. If it fails, ten minutes must pass before trying again.

Friendship (Cha)
Trained only
(Requires the Force-Sensitive feat)
Your character can use the Force to calm down a hostile person or animal. This check is opposed by the target’s Wisdom check. If this fails, a day must pass before trying to use this on the target again.
Vitality Point Cost: 1

Heal Self (Con)
Your character can use the Force to heal damage you have suffered. Specifically, your character can restore vitality, wound, or ability score points he or she has lost.

Result: 10-14
Amount Healed: Restore 1d4+1 vitality points
Vitality Points: 0

Result: 15-19

Vitality Points: 0
Amount Healed: Restore 1d6+2 wound/ability points
Vitality Points: 2

Result: 25+
Amount Healed: Restore 2d6+6 vitality points
Vitality Points: 0
Amount Healed: Restore 1d8+4 wound/ability points
Vitality Points: 4

Your character can only restore ability points that have been lost temporarily as a result of poisoning or disease. Permanent loss due to aging can’t be reversed. Your character can only perform a check once an hour for vitality points, or once daily for wound or ability score points. If the check fails, it costs one vitality point.

Feats
A feat is a special feature that either gives your character a new capability or improves one he or she already has. Your character gains a feat at the 1st level, then again at 3rd, 6th, and every three levels afterwards.

Normal feats
Exotic Weapon Proficiency
Your character selects an exotic weapon, such as a bowcaster or a lightsaber, with this feat. This indicates your character knows how to use the specific type of weapon in combat. Your character can still make an attack with the selected weapon without taking this feat, but he or she suffers a -4 penalty on attack rolls when attacking with the selected weapon. Furthermore, he or she may suffer additional penalties or drawbacks associated with the selected weapon. Your character needs to have a base attack bonus of +1 before taking this feat. If your character wishes to select a lightsaber with this feat, he or she must have a Dexterity score of at least 11. This feat can be taken multiple times, but it must be applied to a different weapon each time.

Force-sensitive
Your character is sensitive to the ways of the Force. He or she may not necessarily be a Jedi or Force-user, but he or she is capable of learning some basic Force skills. If your character wants to learn Force-Sensitive-based skills, he or she must have this feat first. If your character has levels in any Force-using class, he or she may select additional Force feats. Your character gains a Force Point upon taking this feat. With this feat, there’s no limit to the number of Force Points he or she you can have. Without it, the maximum is five.

Your character can make a Wisdom check against a DC of 20 to avoid being surprised. Succeed, and he or she can act during the round in which he or she should have been surprised. This feat is for free if your character chooses to become a Force adept, Jedi consular, or a Jedi guardian upon creation. If your character picks up a level in one of these classes later in his or her career, he or she must purchase this feat.

Weapon Focus
Your character is exceptionally good with a specific weapon. You must choose which one, and unarmed strike and grapple can also be considered as weapons for the purposes of this feat. With this feat, your character adds +1 to all attack rolls made using the selected weapon. Your character must first be proficient with the selected weapon and have a base attack bonus of +1 before selecting this feat. Like the Exotic Weapon Proficiency and Weapon Group Proficiency feats, your character can gain this feat multiple times, though it must be applied to a different weapon each time.

Weapon Group Proficiency
Exactly the same as the Exotic Weapon Proficiency feat, though it’s applied to more common weapons, like the blaster pistols, blaster rifles, heavy weapons, such as an E-web blaster, primitive weapons, such as bows and arrows and slings, simple weapons, such as clubs, knives, and grenades, slugthrowers, vehicle weapons, and vibroweapons, such as vibroknives, vibroblades, and vibro-axes.

Force feats
Alter:
Your character can change the distribution and nature of the Force in your environment. If your character wants to learn Alter-based Force skills, he or she must have this feat first. Before doing so, he or she needs to have the Force-Sensitive feat and at least one level in a Force-using class. Your character also has limited telekinetic abilities, allowing him or her to move small objects of up to a kilogram in weight up to one meter in distance. The object must be in his or her sight and within two meters of his or her presence. The character must also make an Intelligence check against DC 15. The Move Object skill replaces the telekinetic abilities that first come with this feat.

Force adepts, Jedi consulars, and Jedi guardians gain this feat for free at certain levels. It can be selected at an earlier level, but this comes at the cost of some other feat. Furthermore, when your character reaches the level where this feat would have been gained for free, he or she doesn’t gain a bonus feat upon reaching that level.

Control:
Your character can access your inner Force, using it to better utilize the powers of your own body. If your character wants to learn Control-based Force skills, he or she must have this feat first. Before doing so, he or she needs to have the Force-Sensitive feat and at least one level in a Force-using class.

Your character also has the ability, at will, to enter a Force Trance that slows down his or her metabolism, allowing him or her to survive for extended periods of time with very little air, water, or food. He or she in this trance can also heal any wounds. Your character can remain in a trance for up to a week in a dry climate or up to a month in a wet one before succumbing to thirst. However, if water could somehow be applied, such as through an intravenous drip, your character could remain in a trance for up to three months before succumbing to starvation.

Sense:
Your character can sense the Force that binds and connects all living things. If your character wants to learn Sense-based Force skills, he or she must have this feat first. Before doing so, he or she needs to have the Force-Sensitive feat and at least one level in a Force-using class.

Your character can sometimes receive vague impressions of the Force with this feat. He or she may feel uneasy due to an unseen situation or sense the presence of powerful emanations of the dark side. Obi-Wan’s reaction to the destruction of Alderaan is an example of the former, while Luke’s feelings outside the cave on Dagobah is an example of the latter.

Burst of Speed: (though not listed above, it is a prerequisite for the next two feats)
Your character can move at lightning speed for a brief period of time. He or she must have the Force-Sensitive and Control feats and at least three levels in a Force-using class. Your character may increase his or her base speed to ten times its normal amount for one round. As a side effect, the distance he or she can traverse while jumping is multiplied by a factor of five. Using this feat is a full-round action, and after the round is over, your character loses five vitality points.

Knight Speed:
Your character can move at lightning speed for a brief period of time. He or she must have the Force-Sensitive, Control, and Burst of Speed feats, at least seven levels in a Jedi class, and a Dexterity score of at least 13. Your character may increase his or her base speed to twenty times its normal amount for one round. As a side effect, the distance he or she can traverse while jumping is multiplied by a factor of ten. Using this feat is a full-round action, and after the round is over, your character loses eight vitality points.

Master Speed:
You can move at lightning speed for a brief period of time. He or she must have the Force-Sensitive, Control, and Burst of Speed feats, at least thirteen levels in a Jedi class, and a Dexterity score of at least 13. Your character may increase his or her base speed to thirty times its normal amount for one round. As a side effect, the distance he or she can traverse while jumping is multiplied by a factor of fifteen. Using this feat is a full-round action, and after the round is over, your character loses ten vitality points.

Force Mastery:
Your character can accomplish Force-related tasks with much less concentration than normal. He or she must have the Force-Sensitive feat, have at least seven levels in a Force-using class, and a Wisdom score of at least 15. Once a round, your character can perform as a free action a Force-related task that normally requires an attack action, though the vitality point cost for such an action is double the normal cost. If the action normally doesn’t cost any vitality points, using this feat with that action will cost one vitality point. The effects of this feat don’t stack with the effects of High Force Mastery. In other words, your character can’t use both feats to reduce a full-round action to a free action.

High Force Mastery:
Your character can accomplish Force-related tasks with much less concentration than normal. He or she must have the Force-Sensitive and Force Mastery feats, have at least thirteen levels in a Force-using class, and a Wisdom score of at least 17. Once a round, your character can perform as an attack action a Force-related task that normally requires a full-round action, though the vitality point cost for such an action is double the normal cost. If the action normally doesn’t cost any vitality points, using this feat with that action will cost one vitality point. The effects of this feat don’t stack with the effects of High Force Mastery. In other words, your character can’t use both feats to reduce a full-round action to a free action.

Force Mind: (though not listed above, it is a prerequisite for the next two feats)
Your character can grant a Force bonus to a single ability score of your allies. He or she must have the Force-Sensitive and Sense feats, at least three levels in a Force-using class, and a Wisdom score of at least 15. The targets of this feat, which doesn’t include your character, each gain a +2 bonus to a single ability score of your choice, and all those affect gain the bonus to the same ability score. This requires a full-round action to initiate and lasts one round for each level in a Force-using class your character has. Creating a Force Mind costs two vitality points plus one for each person included.

Knight Mind:
Your character can grant a Force bonus to a single ability score of your allies. He or she must have the Force-Sensitive, Sense, and Force Mind feats, at least seven levels in a Jedi class, and a Wisdom score of at least 15. The targets of this feat, which doesn’t include your character, each gain a +4 bonus to a single ability score of your choice, and all those affect gain the bonus to the same ability score. This requires a full-round action to initiate and lasts five rounds. Creating a Knight Mind costs four vitality points plus one for each person included.

Master Mind:
Your character can grant a Force bonus to a single ability score of your allies. He or she must have the Force-Sensitive, Sense, and Force Mind feats, at least thirteen levels in a Jedi class, and a Wisdom score of at least 15. The targets of this feat, which doesn’t include your character, each gain a +6 bonus to a single ability score of your choice, and all those affect gain the bonus to the same ability score. This requires a full-round action to initiate and lasts five rounds. Creating a Master Mind costs six vitality points plus two for each person included.

Lightsaber Defense: (though not listed above, it is a prerequisite for the next two feats)
Your character is adept at blocking incoming attacks with your lightsaber. He or she must have the Force-Sensitive, Control, and Exotic Weapon Proficiency (lightsaber) feats, at least three levels in a Force-using class, a base attack bonus of +3, and a Dexterity score of at least 13. With this feat, when your character wields a lightsaber, he or she gains a +2 dodge bonus to his or her Defense against attacks. However, any condition that makes your character lose his or her Dexterity bonus to his or her defense (if you have any, that is) also makes him or her lose dodge bonuses.

He or she must have the Force-Sensitive, Control, Exotic Weapon Proficiency (lightsaber), and Lightsaber Defense feats, at least seven levels in a Jedi class, a base attack bonus of +3, and a Dexterity score of at least 13. With this feat, when your character wields a lightsaber, he or she gains an additional +2 dodge bonus to his or her Defense against attacks. However, any condition that makes your character lose his or her Dexterity bonus to his or her defense (if you have any, that is) also makes him or her lose dodge bonuses.

Anakin Solo (Before the NJO):
Male Human Jedi Guardian 5:
Init +1 (Dex); Defense 17 (+6 class, +1 Dex); Spd 10m; VP/WP 40/12; Atk +6 melee (1d3+1, punch), or +7 melee (3d8+1, crit 19-20, lightsaber), +6 ranged (3d6, blaster pistol); SV Fort +5, Ref +5, Will +3; SZ M; FP 3; DSP 0; Rep +3; Str 12, Dex 13, Con 12, Int 15, Wis 11, Cha 12.

Equipment:
Lightsaber, blaster pistol.

Affect Mind +5, Battlemind +8, Empathy +3, Enhance Ability +4, Move Object +9, See Force +4.

Feats:
Exotic Weapon Proficiency (lightsaber), Force-Sensitive, Gearhead, Weapon Group Proficiency (blaster pistols, simple weapons).

Force Feats:
Alter, Control, Lightsaber Defense, Sense.

Additional information on Anakin’s stats not provided beforehand.

Each of his Strength, Constitution, and Charisma scores has a value of 12, and his Dexterity score is 13. Because of these values, he receives a +1 bonus to all checks to skills that have any of these attributes as the key ability.

His Intelligence score is 15, so he receives a +2 bonus to all checks to skills that has Intelligence as the key ability.

As a human, he is categorized as a medium-sized creature in the Star Wars Galaxy, and therefore receives no special bonuses or penalties because of his size. By comparison, Ewoks are tiny-sized creatures, and Hutts are large-sized creatures.

His base speed is 10 meters. This means he has a walking speed of five kilometers per hour if he’s not encumbered.

Skills
Pilot:
Anakin used this skill when he flew his starfighter in Vector Prime, Balance Point, and Conquest. Unfortunately, since he didn’t have the appropriate Starship Operation feat, Starship Operation (starfighter) in this case, he suffered a -4 penalty to all his Pilot checks. He could have used this skill untrained. In other words, he could have had no ranks in this skill, but he still could have made skill checks normally.

Read/Write Language and Speak Language:
These don’t work like standard skills. Anakin started off learning how to Read/Write Basic and Speak Basic. Language skills have no ranks, and don’t require a skill check. Either Anakin knew how to speak or read or write a language, or he didn’t. As you can see, he later learned to speak Calamarian, the language of the Mon Calamari, like Admiral Ackbar, and to speak Shyriiwook, the language of the Wookies. Though in the case of Shyriiwook, Anakin, like his siblings and father, can’t speak the language. He can only understand it. If Anakin wanted to learn how to write in Calamarian, he needed to learn it. Knowing how to speak Calamarian doesn’t mean he knows how to write in that language.

Repair:
Anakin used this skill whenever he helped his father repair the Millennium Falcon.

For simple repairs, Anakin needed to make a skill check against a DC 5. More complicated repairs had higher DCs. If Anakin lacked the proper tools to make the repairs, he suffered a -5 penalty. Had he been working on alien or unfamiliar technology, such as a Chiss clawcraft, the DC he needed to make a skill check against would increase by 5. I don’t believe this applies to Yuuzhan Vong crafts. I believe he would need to use the Treat Injury skill, which he would use to use a medkit to heal his own wounds or Tahiri’s.

Anakin could make temporary or jury-rigged repairs, which I believe he did when he cobbled together that repulsor sled from his downed X-wing in Conquest. That reduced the DC by 5 and cut the required time in half; however each time he used the affected equipment, there was a 10% cumulative chance it would break again.
If Anakin had five or more ranks in an appropriate Craft or Profession skill, he would have gained a +2 synergy bonus to his Repair checks. If he had five or more ranks in the Computer Use skill, he would have gained a similar bonus to his Repair checks when he tried to fix computerized devices.

He had to have at least one rank in this skill before he could use it.

Force skills
Affect Mind (Cha)
(Requires the Force-Sensitive and Alter feats)
Anakin could use the Force to alter a target’s perception or make a telepathic suggestion into another character’s mind. He used this to plant the image of a safe location in the mind of the Dantari chief in Onslaught. After he made an Affect Mind check, the result determined the DC for the target’s Will save.

Result: Up to 5
Will Saving Throw DC: 10
Result: 6-15
Will Saving Throw DC: 15
Result: 16-25
Will Saving Throw DC: 20
Result: 26-35
Will Saving Throw DC: 25
Result: 36+
Will Saving Throw DC: 30

If the target’s saving throw fails, Anakin could do one of two things. He could create a simple false stimulus, such as a sound or image, detected by a single person and lasting no more than a single round. This was what Obi-Wan did to distract the two stormtroopers after he disabled the tractor beam in A New Hope. If Anakin wanted to do this to multiple targets, then the targets would receive a +2 circumstance bonus to their saving throws. Using Affect Mind in this way costs two vitality points.

Anakin could also perform the classic “Jedi mind trick” and make an otherwise unpalatable suggestion seem completely agreeable to the target. He must communicate with the target, and the suggestion can’t threaten the target’s life. Using Affect Mind in this way costs four vitality points. The range of Affect Mind is ten meters.

Move Object (Int)
(Requires the Force-Sensitive and Alter feats)
This allowed Anakin to move objects with the Force. He could pick up and move objects from a distance, but he must see the object he wished to move, and it must have been within ten meters of his position. Lifting and moving an object of up to five kilograms is simple skill, requiring a check against DC 10 and only costs one vitality point. For each additional order of magnitude (50 kg, 500 kg, etc) of the object, the DC increases by 5 and the vitality point cost doubles.

If Anakin and Tahiri were contesting control of an object, they each need to make an opposed Move Object check. Whoever gets the higher result gains control for that round. If an object is being held physically by a resisting individual, Anakin’s Move Object check would be opposed by the resisting individual’s Strength check.

Anakin could use this skill to hurl an object to strike a target. His Move Object check result plus his Dexterity bonus must equal or exceed the target’s Defense. If Anakin’s Move Object check fails, the attack fails regardless of his Defense. Characters struck by such attacks suffer damage based on the object’s weight. A five-kilogram object inflicts 1d6 damage, and each additional order of magnitude (50 kg, 500 kg, etc) doubles the damage dice.

Anakin could move an object and attack with it, or move the object twice in a single round. He could move multiple objects simultaneously, but it is more difficult and requires a full-round action. The heaviest object would determine the base DC and vitality cost, and each additional object would add 2 to both the DC and the vitality point cost.

Anakin could also telekinetically lift and move himself, but that increased the DC by 10.
Vitality Point Cost: 1

See Force (Wis)
(Requires the Force-Sensitive and Sense feats)
Anakin could detect the presence of the Force in a person or area, or detect nearby living creatures. His checks for this skill had a variety of effects. He could identify whether a specific target (which must be within a hundred meters) was a Force-user (in game terms that means if the target had the Force-Sensitive feat and how many levels, if any, the target had in a Force-using class). Anakin needed to make a See Force check against a DC 10 for this to happen; however, if the target was using the Force Stealth skill, his See Force check must also exceed the result of the target’s Force Stealth check. Anakin doesn’t have to see the target to use this skill. He just needs to know the target was there.

Anakin could detect the presence (and relative strength) of the Force in an object or area within ten meters of his position. He needed to make a See Force check against a DC 20 for this to happen, although particularly strong emanations of the Force could reduce the DC of this check.

Anakin could detect all living sentient creatures within ten meters. Force-Sensitive creatures, like the vornskr and voxyn, were more easily detected (DC 10), than those without the Force-Sensitive feat (DC 20). If the target was using the Force Stealth skill, his See Force check also needed to exceed the Force Stealth check result of the target. Anakin couldn’t use this ability on the same target more than once per hour.
Vitality Point Cost: 1

Normal feats
Gearhead
Anakin definitely had a way with machines. With this feat, he gained a +2 bonus on all of his Repair and Computer Use checks.

Tahiri Veila (as of the beginning of Conquest):
Female Human Jedi Guardian 4:
Init +1 (Dex); Defense 17 (+6 class, +1 Dex); Spd 10m; VP/WP 30/12; Atk +5 melee* (2d8, crit 19-20, lightsaber), +5 ranged (3d6, blaster pistol); SV Fort +5, Ref +5, Will +3; SZ M; FP 2; DSP 0; Rep +3; Str 10, Dex 12, Con 12, Int 13, Wis 13, Cha 13.

Equipment:
Lightsaber*, blaster pistol.
– Tahiri has constructed her own lightsaber.

Skills:
Climb +2, Computer Use +3, Craft (lightsaber) +4, Jump +2, Knowledge (Jedi lore) +4, Listen +2, Read/Write Basic, Speak Basic, Spot +2, Survival +5, Swim +1.

Force Skills:
Affect Mind +3, Empathy +5, Enhance Ability +3, Force Defense +2, Force Push +2, Move Object+5, See Force +5, Telepathy +5.

Feats:
Exotic Weapon Proficiency (lightsaber), Force-Sensitive, Skill Emphasis (Survival), Weapon Focus (lightsaber), Weapon Proficiency (blaster pistols, simple weapons).

Force Feats:
Alter, Burst of Speed, Control, Sense.

Additional information on Tahiri’s stats not provided beforehand.

Her Dexterity and Constitution have an attribute score of 12, and her Intelligence, Wisdom, and Charisma have an attribute score of 13. Because of these values, she receives a +1 bonus to all checks to skills that have any of these attributes as the key ability.

Skills
Listen (Wis)
Tahiri uses this skill to hear approaching enemies, to detect someone sneaking up on her from behind, or to eavesdrop on someone else’s conversation. When she’s trying to hear if someone is sneaking up from behind her, her Listen check is opposed by the intruder’s Move Silently check.

If she were to take the Alertness feat, she would get a +2 synergy bonus to all her Listen checks. She could have used this skill untrained. In other words, she could have had no ranks in this skill, but she still could have made skill checks normally.

Spot (Wis)
Tahiri uses this skill to detect characters or creatures that were hiding. As such, her Spot checks were opposed by the Hide check of the character or creature that was trying not to be seen. Her Spot checks can also detect characters or creatures that aren’t intentionally hiding, but are still difficult to see - say in poor-light conditions or fog. She can also detect someone who’s in disguise with this skill.

Whether this skill is either a reaction or a full-action round depends on whether or not Tahiri actively takes the time to try to notice something. For every four meters separating Tahiri and the target, she receives a -1 penalty to her skill check. If Tahiri is distracted, she receives a -5 penalty.

If she were to take the Alertness feat, she would get a +2 synergy bonus to all her Spot checks. She could have used this skill untrained. In other words, she could have had no ranks in this skill, but she still could have made skill checks normally.

Survival (Wis)
She used this skill to survive living in the deserts of Tatooine while growing up with the Tusken Raiders, and when she and Anakin made their way back to the tribe in Promises. She could have used this skill untrained. In other words, she could have had no ranks in this skill, but she still could have made skill checks normally.

Swim (Str)
Tahiri can swim, dive, navigate underwater obstacles, etc. She can swim at one-quarter her speed (2.5 m, or 1.25 kilometers per hour) as a move action, or half her speed (5 m, or 2.5 kilometers per hour) as a full-round action.

If Tahiri swims in calm water, like she did on Yavin VIII in Lyric’s World, the DC is 10. In rough water, such as the river in The Golden Globe, the DC is 15. In stormy water, the DC is 20. Failing the check means she made no progress. If she failed by five or more, she would go underwater and start to drown. If that happens, she would suffer a -1 penalty on her Swim check for each consecutive round she’s been underwater. I believe this penalty ceases upon reaching the surface.

For every hour Tahiri swims, she must make a Swim check against DC 20 or suffer 1d6 of vitality damage from fatigue. If Tahiri is carrying any gear, she suffers a penalty of -1 for every two kilograms. She could have used this skill untrained. In other words, she could have had no ranks in this skill, but she still could have made skill checks normally.

Force skills
Force Push (Int)
Trained only
(Requires the Force-Sensitive and Alter feats)
Tahiri can knock down one or more opponents using the Force. This skill check sets the damage dealt by the attack as well as the DC for the target’s Reflex saving throw. Each target receives a +4 bonus for every size category it is larger than Medium-size, or a -4 penalty for every size category smaller than Medium-size. A target also receives a +4 bonus on its save if it has more than two legs or is otherwise more stable than a normal humanoid.

On a failed save, the target is knocked back two meters, falls to the ground, and suffers full damage. On a successful save, the damage is halved, and the target remains standing in the same place prior to the attack.

Result: Up to 15
Damage: 1d4
DC: 10
Result: 16-25
Damage: 2d4
DC: 15
Result: 26+
Damage: 3d4
DC: 20

Force Push is an attack action, and can affect up to four targets up to ten meters away. (All who must be standing adjacent to one another.)
Vitality Point Cost: 4

Telepathy (Wis)
Trained only
(Requires the Force-Sensitive and Sense feats)
Tahiri can establish a mental link with a specific target. I think she did this when she called for her bantha Bangor in Promises. Through the link, Tahiri can exchange emotions or a simple thought, such as “Go!”, “Help!”, or “Danger!” A Telepathy check establishes a mental link with a specific target. For friendly targets, the DC is 10. For hostile targets, the check must exceed either the target’s Will saving throw or DC 15, whichever is higher.

The maximum range for this skill is a kilometer, but the distance to the target modifies the DC. If the target is within ten meters, there’s no adjustment. If the target is between ten and a hundred meters away, increase the DC by 10. If the target is between a hundred meters and a kilometer away, increase the DC by 20.
Vitality Point Cost: 3

Normal feats
Skill Emphasis:
Tahiri demonstrates a special knack with a specific skill. In her case, that skill is Survival. She gains a +3 bonus on all skill checks with that skill. Like the Exotic Weapon Proficiency feat, Tahiri could gain this feat multiple times, though it must be applied to a different skill each time.

Tahiri - Jedi in the making
~art work by angel_gidget~

angel_gidget did this picture of Tahiri alone when she was "on a miscellaneous character binge." She says: "I wanted to draw
some of the females from the expanded universe who weren't getting much artistic attention. I felt that she was one of those."

Once upon a time in a galaxy far, far away . . .
~the authors chat about what they're up to~

JAYA SOLO says:
I've always liked Anakin and Tahiri, but I've never actually written a story where they're together. After doing the bikini challenge, I decided to go a little more in depth to the situation I created for them in that vignette. When I wrote my vignette I had them be in their mid-twenties and "just friends" that were on an assignment together. The bikini pushed them over the edge and into more than being just friends.

So I had a bit of a background for Stalemate in my head when I started writing it. The story gleefully turned into mischief, mayhem, and mush and I hope my readers enjoyed it. I did. grin

My favorite line from it was: It was in his nervousness that instead of asking Tahiri to marry him when he got down on one knee, he sputtered out, "Tahiri, will you wear my bikini?"

TAHI says:
Between having no internet at home (thanks to silly husband), and breaking my leg, I've found the last month a bit trying, but I DID manage to write a story - Bikini Detective - for Whitey's excellent challenge topic. The good thing about it for me was that it turned into a story I could tweak to fit into my AU series of stories - At the Oasis - which I'd been hoping to add to for a while. So thanks, Whitey.

COURTNEY_SOLO says:
In Over the Course of Time, Anakin and Tahiri meet when he is eleven and she is nine. They have many interesting adventures together before the "unthinkable" happens; Anakin kisses Tahiri! Their relationship gradually gains ground, but they are faced with many challenges along the way: a Krayt Dragon, a looming fortress, a mission to a planet called Myrkr, and cancer. So far in this fic, Anakin and Tahiri are struggling to remain friends.

In Completely Yours, Anakin has finally come back from the Myrkr mission. Yes, he escaped alive! Trapped inside a Yuuzhan Vong body, exactly like Callista had been, it took a while for the body to regain his true features. He has returned to the Jedi Temple, and to Tahiri. But will Tahiri accept him? After all, it's been ten years ...

So far in this fic, Tahiri and Anakin have married, and Tahiri is expecting a son. But she has been kidnapped!

Amphistaff or Achilles Heel?
~art work by angel_gidget~

About this insightful picture, angel_gidget says:
"I did this for an LJ community sw_mythology. The idea was to do art or fic based on a Star Wars topic using myth-based themes. I chose to do art for the Expanded Universe, and then use Tahiri for the "Achilles' Heel" theme. She is weakened by her inability to accept the Yuuzhan Vong side of her own personality.

YES YES YES YES! It's up!!!

Wow, it looks awesome! I love the Cover for this one (do you think we'll run outta pictures soon? sad ) and I loved reading the entire thing!

The RPG thing was looooooong, I kinda didn't read it (I'm not into that stuff), but it looked great.

I saw one or two mark-ups that could use some mending, but heck, if I did this magazine, it would be a WRECK.

Awesome job, Tahi and everyone else involved with this awesome magazine! applause

Did I get the 1st post? batting

Excellent work everyone!

The art is amazing (I especially love the cover), and the reviews are very well done. applause

I'm blown away by the RPGing article. I've always been curious about what exactly is involved in playing, and now my questions are answered. Thanks, JediAlly! happy

Perfect snippet choice, btw, Courtney! A very fitting addition to our second issue! grin

Also, I'm loving the 'Author Chat' section.

Wonderful collaboration, A/T fans! I think the magazine is coming along brilliantly, and big thank you to Tahi for melding it all together. hugs wink

And is the spelling - jappor or japor? I've seen both and don't know what is correct. Let me know if I have it wrong. happy

Gah, Whitey - you big tease. wink
