Well, it's been half a month after the challenge ended and I only just finished reading all the entries. tongue

Then I have to write the reviews and probably reply in their separate threads, then the other reviewers have to send in theirs.

So, be patient. tongue

Editorial
You say summer, and I say . . . winter

It may be freezing in the land of the Southern Cross, but it's certainly warm here at Anahiri headquarters where we have yet another issue full of fond facts and thoughts about our favourite couple. Due to the fact that it has been two months since the last magazine, we've made a special effort to make up for the long wait, so be prepared for some special treats and a real artists’ extravaganza.

The major feature this time is the abundance of amazing artwork we have to offer, and we'd like to thank obaona, FalconFan, angel_gidget and Courtney_Solo for their generosity as well as their talents. You will find their fantabulous creations amidst our usual fare of reviews, articles and, of course, the interview. The subject of scrutiny this time is none other than one of our most popular writers - YodaKenobi - who fills us in on some of his perceptions about Anakin and Tahiri and writing in general.

Reviewers Courtney_Solo, YodaKenobi, Maggy and Tahi cover works both old and new, while the feature article by Tahi looks back at the JJK books and explores how the terrific twosome became . . . well, a terrific twosome. And so we can carry on adding to their never-ending story, Whitey provides us with another of his brilliant challenges.

Our contributor for "Thanks for the Memories" this time is LosDosMos, whose choice for favourite passage carries on the JJK motif that features strongly this time. And to add to the knowledge you gleaned in the April magazine about the world of role-playing games, JediAlly has some more facts, not to mention some speculations about Anakin's and Tahiri's stats in the upcoming edition of the
Revised New Jedi Order Sourcebook.

The list of new stories featuring Anakin and Tahiri continues to show that they remain a favourite as far as fanfic writers are concerned, and we can guarantee you're sure to find many tasty treats to keep you warm or extremely hot, depending on your geographic location. No matter what the temperature, however, we're sure you'll be both entertained and entranced. One thing that we can assure you IS hot, in the sense of up-to-date, is the chit-chat from the writers, which brings us to the end of our offerings for this month.

We'd like to thank all our regular readers for their continued loyalty, and bid a warm greeting - regardless of the climate - to any new readers who may have stumbled upon us in their search for A/T goodness. So with no further ado we encourage you to turn over to the first page of the third issue of Anahiri: Sound and Silence.

Interview with . . . YODAKENOBI

A few weeks ago, I was approached by the organiser of the FFAuthorInterviews thread to interview YodaKenobi. Of course, I jumped at the chance - which rather unnerved my work mates who were in the office at the time - and set about the process of pestering poor Yoda with a lengthy stream of email sessions exploring his thoughts about Star Wars and writing. You can find the full transcript of the interview HERE, so do drop into the thread, if you haven't already, and post your comments. We covered a pretty wide range of topics from Yoda's rather interesting beginnings in a camper - or was it a trailer - to his musical preferences, his writing influences, and how the Prequels turned him into an obsessed Star Wars fan who managed to plough through nearly 40 books in eight months. He began writing his first fanfic three years ago - any guesses as to what event provoked him to take up his pen? wink

With the permission of the manager of the FFAuthorInterviews thread, I'm going to reproduce a little of the interview here, along with some extra questions that I couldn't include in the original due to lack of space:

So, Yoda, when did you first start writing fanfic and what drew you to it?

I started writing in July of '03 and Anakin Solo's death in Star by Star is solely responsible. It didn't make any sense to me for the story of the NJO and I thought it should be changed. After some debates in the lit forum about whether it was possible to bring Anakin back in a plausible way at that point in canon (which was just as Force Heretic was winding down), I decided to try my hand at it. I wrote Revolution and I probably knew I was going to turn it into a series before the first chapter was even done.

Can you remember what it was precisely that made you think that? Was it that you had a very clear vision of the story you could weave from the threads you started with – or that you became hooked on the process of story telling?

Both. I was having so much fun writing it that I knew I wanted to write an ending for the NJO, and have Anakin see Tahiri and his family (which I knew wasn't going to happen in Revolution). Also, the other side of that story with Kyp, Alema, and Wrev is all geared towards a sequel, with the discovery of the coralskipper farms and Wrev's deception. I kind of had an idea right away where I wanted everything to go.

Was writing an activity you'd always been interested in - for instance did you do much creative writing at school?

I remember writing some short stories as a kid, a lot of it humor and action, but I really wasn't into any creative writing from junior high on up. I've always been a fan of good storytelling though, in any medium.

You said it was Anakin's death in SbS that motivated you to write. Why do you think Anakin’s death has aroused so much controversy?

Beyond the fact that he was such a great character that a lot of us loved, I think because it seems to leave a lot of plot holes. I can see now why Lucas apparently didn't want Anakin to be the hero of the series, because the point of the NJO was bringing about the next Sith Lord and playing a trick on all the fanboys who defended Jacen's action throughout that series as "light side". But Anakin's death still seems meaningless to me, and ultimately harmful to the story. Too many plot threads that had been established since his birth really, but also running through the Corellian Trilogy, The New Rebellion, and of course the NJO itself, had to be dropped, and we'll never get any conclusion to them.

There's also the silliness of the situation in which he died. Killing the voxyn queen so that no more voxyn can be cloned? Clones are 100% genetic replicas. If even one voxyn survived, the Yuuzhan Vong could have gone on cloning them indefinitely, and we see voxyn as late as Destiny's Way. Yet there's no explanation why the Vong don't clone them... and no one on the strike team or in the Jedi Order seems aware of this flawed logic, that killing the "Voxyn Queen" will have an affect on anything. It's a very silly way to kill off such an important character. Couldn't they have done something better? If they were determined to kill Anakin, do it in a way that would have at least tied up Ikrit's prophecy, the foreshadowing in the other NJO books, and Luke's vision in DE?

Hopefully Del Rey and LFL will realize what a mistake this all was before it's too late. [ face_wink]

This is the point at which we all laugh together I gather. wink But, of course, SbS has been the impetus for a wealth of Anakin and Tahiri-based fanfic - your own reaction being a prime example. I'm interested in how you represent them both in your stories. For instance, I've noticed in The Age of Heroes that you've been developing Tahiri's character in a way that shows her dealing with her Vong-ness and her little insecurities. What are some of the main features you see in Tahiri's personality and behaviour that you have dealt with, or intend to deal with, in your series?

Well, in my series and canon as well, I think Tahiri is a lot more confident as a result of her joining. She's become her own person for sure. As for the Vong-ness, I think she's learned to live with it, and in AoH we see a lot of the old Tahiri. She still has the thoughts, some YV instincts, but I think she deliberately fights these or has been for a while and it's become second nature. When she sees a sprawling metropolis or something, there is an initial disgust in her mind, knowing a YV would find it repugnant. But I think she realizes that that's all it is, knows that she thinks that because of what Nen Yim and Mezhan Kwaad did to her, and that it's nothing more.

Throughout the series we're going to see some of the part of her that is Yuuzhan Vong come to the forefront, and Anakin and Tahiri's relationship will certainly be tested. There's actually something very tragic that will happen that I don't want to go into too much, but it will end up exploring just how much they mean to each other and what one of them would do without the other.

Oh my goodness, now you have me wanting to know details, but not wanting to know details, if you know what I mean. But your point about them meaning so much to each other reminds me of what Greg Keyes once said about Anakin and Tahiri being complementary personalities. How does this work in your view of them, and what qualities does each have?

I agree with Keyes completely. Anakin is quiet and earnest, while Tahiri is talkative and bubbly— sort of simplistic, but it all takes off from there. I think they need each other. We see it early on in the JJK books; I think the first one. I think there's a completeness when they're together that's not there when they're apart. Just like Ikrit said, together, they are better than the sum of their parts. wink

Amen to that, brother. wink And if I could just expand on this "complementary" idea a bit more - what would you say are some of the other ways they supply each other's needs?

Well, we see Anakin failing Tahiri in that department quite a bit, but I think that actually works to both advantages. Anakin forgetting Tahiri's birthday, or saying the wrong thing, (or as she alleges, forgetting all about her) gives her a chance to scold him and knock him back down to earth (so to speak...). I think Anakin needs someone like that, and I think Tahiri needs that to keep a balance in their relationship, because Anakin is older, and obviously stronger in the Force.

I also think Anakin fulfills her needs by just being her friend, and giving her a sense of family. We forget that Tahiri really has no one. Her parents were butchered; she hasn't seen her adopted Tusken Raider father since the JJK books as far as we know. I think Anakin became her family, along with Tionne, and probably Kam as well. And later, the Solos as a whole of course.

Oyah, that's a very good point. I definitely think the need for family is a major feature in Tahiri's emotional make-up. What about Anakin? Do you think Anakin had a good relationship with his parents, or more precisely how would you describe the relationship taking into account his independence and his tendency to rely a lot on his uncle and Tionne and Kam - and of course the twins and Tahiri?

He was a very quiet child for sure. It was probably a strange relationship. Anakin was living alone with Winter and a Nanny droid for the first couple years of his life for his own safety while Han and Leia were on Coruscant. I think they certainly love one another, but as you said, Anakin seemed like a fairly independent child. Anakin doesn't seem to carry around any of the grudges that Jaina does, so I think he looks up to his parents in the same way he does his Uncle Luke. And it's obvious that both Han and Leia know he's very special too.

That reminds me of that line of Leia's about Anakin marching to a drum nobody else hears. happy Do you think that because Anakin appeared to have a group of adults (Tionne, Luke, Kam, Winter, Ikrit and his parents) to rely on it made him a bit more balanced? Or maybe he just wasn't as dependent on his parents for what he needed. Is he more stable than the twins do you think? Or is he just more self-reliant?

He does seem to be more self-reliant than the twins, but all of the Solo children appear to be pretty independent spirits. Anakin probably became more of a loner because he didn't have that connection that the twins did, so he was probably the left out of some situations.

He certainly does seem to have a lot of mentors outside his parents, and it seems to have paid off. He did turn out to be the most stable of the three. I think that would have lasted had he lived longer, but I guess we'll never know.

I think Luke is everything Anakin wanted to be as a child, so having a lot of good Jedi to teach him was fundamental to his development, and was something Han and Leia really couldn't give him personally.

If Anakin and Tahiri were here, what music would they listen to?

That's a tough one thinking I think Anakin would like something complex that didn't stick to song formulae, because I think that sort of thing would bore him. Probably weird electronic stuff like Radiohead, or something. And Tahiri... I don't know, she's from Tatooine and lived with the Tusken Raiders... I'd guess some sort of tribal music or old country-folk music for some reason. tongue

Yay! Somebody else who thinks Anakin would like Radiohead. Ah - great minds . . . wink Yeah - I can see tribal music for Tahiri - or kind of "Roots" type stuff. What car do you think Anakin would drive?

Something fast, though I'm tempted to say a Buick LeSabre silly

Whatever it is, I have a strange feeling it would be "modified", too. And now a slightly more sensible question: you've written an astronomical number of epic length stories since you started - how do you keep up the regimen? Do you have a writing routine? (Please don't tell me you write in the nude while in the lotus position! LOL) Seriously - do you have a set time for writing, and about how many hours a day would you try and write? And do you have a method for dealing with writer's block?

No, no, I promise I don't write in the nude. I save that for posting on the JC. whistling

I was much more regimented about it when I was writing the first trilogy, I'm afraid I've really gotten bad about it lately. I basically just try and write whenever I have time, a lot of it late at night because I have rampant insomnia. I try and write 10 pages a day, but as I said, I've failed at this badly lately. I'd say a couple hours a day when things are going well. Hopefully I'll get back into a better routine when I write the follow-up to [i]AoH
(working on the closing chapters right now).

[Tries not to visualize Yoda in posting mode! hypnotized ] I know you keep up to date with the latest profic books. As your two series are intended as AU alternatives to the NJO and DN series, how much do you utilise actual canon material? (Obviously you use many of the characters and settings, but as you read, do you pick certain events in profic that you find particularly interesting or useful for your storyline? I ask this for those folks like me who kind of gave up on the NJO and who haven't read DN.)

Nothing that's happening post NJO is used in my fics, really. There might be similarities since we sort of had the same jumping off point (my fics take off from Force Heretic 3: Reunion). But I will use stuff in the new books if it relates to background info. For example, I won't incorporate Juun or Tarfang in my fic series as much as I love them, [ face_sad] but if the Killiks really did build Centerpoint thousands of years before the Saga (which I think it's clear they didn't) I would include something like that.

Something I know your readers would like to know - what do you have in the pipeline once you've completed The Age of Heroes?

Oh yeah! There will be three fics that follow it in the "Legacy of the Sith" series. I should start the next one in a couple months after I take a little break. I also may write a Legacy of the Force short story with another writer here soon, but I'm not 100% sure yet. We've been kicking it around for a few months, and I want to do it. We'll see what happens. I'll also probably have a new Beatles parody sometime in the near future, and who knows? Probably something in a totally different direction like , Jaina Solo at some point.

I'll definitely keep writing no matter what. But being able to do it at a place like the JC where a lot of very nice people take time out of their day to read my stories and tell me what they think makes it all the more rewarding, and I really can't thank them enough.

Well, I think I speak for many readers when I say thanks for being such a good storyteller. And now that I’ve pretty much exhausted all my questions – and probably you as well – I’ll end with asking what advice, if any, would you offer anyone intending to write fanfic?

To not worry too much about things like readership and just write what they think is good, even if it's not "popular." And to stick with it. happy

To thyself be true - probably a good philosophy of life there. happy

Well that's it - the torture session is over. Thanks so much, Yoda, for giving of your time so generously and especially for allowing me to pick your brains about your fics and about the process of writing. That – along with our love of Star Wars – is the bond that unites us all.

And . . . uh . . . have you considered maybe wearing a bathrobe when you post?
wink

Anakin and Tahiri – heavenly pair
~wallpaper by obaona~

obaona is a multi-talented writer/artist who has produced not only wonderful stories, but also some of our favourite A/T banners for the fiction forums. And now, especially for Anahiri, she has this little treat – some wallpaper. So don’t wait – get on with the interior decorating!

The magic continues
~Fanfic Reviews~

Left Behind by Courtney_Solo
This is a highly original fic that will appeal to lovers of romance, especially romance between you know who. Courtney has based her story on the premise that Tahiri’s decision at the end of Promises was not to return with Anakin and Tionne to the academy, but to remain on Tatooine. And chance being what it is, she and Anakin meet up again six years later when Luke requests that he join a group heading to Tatooine on a mission to help her in a conflict that has arisen between the Tuskens and a band of Mos Eisley rebels.

The story is full of surprises, which I won’t spoil by divulging them here, but suffice to say that they make it an exciting read. Amidst the action and intrigue, Courtney gives her readers plenty of sweet A/T moments. I especially enjoy the passages where she goes into Anakin’s and Tahiri’s private thoughts about each other – often written as entries in their datapads or simply as internal monologues. These little passages help to create the tension as we see both struggling to truly express out loud the extent of their feelings for the other. Although, mind you, they are forced to spend a lot of their time together surviving the various attacks on their lives.

Left Behind has all the elements of a well-rounded story, some memorable dialogue and plenty of lovely A/T moments. It’s still in progress, so it’s a good time to join in and start enjoying it yourself.

”Bikini” by Imperial_Hippy
This is a lovely, disturbing vignette written specifically for the Anahiri Bikini Challenge. Anakin Solo is featured dressed in one of Tahiri’s bikinis. Lovely … really. All in all, it is quite disturbing, yet amusing, and creates a must-read for all wacked fanfic-ers!

The Eighth Cortex by YodaKenobi
The Eight Cortex is the second part of YodaKenobi’s series that replaces the Force Heretic books and the following ones. The story starts with the capture of Leia and a helpless C3PO who has to watch. Anakin, still on the occupied Coruscant, has accepted his being a Jedi Knight. With his companion Uhla he searches for Yu'shaa, the prophet of the Shamed Ones. He doesn’t know that he is running right into a trap set for him and his fellows.

The Jedi also send a strike team to find Yu’shaa. Tahiri with her special ability because of her shaping, is among them.

On the other side of the galaxy Leia has to fight with her own demons and a new threat rises from the dark, searching for the newly developed Alpha Red.

Strap in for a ride through deception, war and great tragedy, through reunions, hope and love. Meet Wrev Caster and Strift Zonn, two well developed OCs, again and get to know the new ones - and meet up with well known canon characters.

If you thought the first part was great you will just love this one.

Many Happy Returns by Tahi
In this canon 'fic, Tahi explores the time between Greg Keyes’ Edge of Victory duology and Troy Denning's Star by Star, by showing us just what Anakin and Tahiri were up to in those months. Because the story is so well crafted, and Tahi herself writes the characters of Anakin and Tahiri so much like Mr. Keyes’ contributions, MHR seems to fit so snugly within the time period that one might think the Edge of Victory series was actually a trilogy.

The story starts fairly innocently with Anakin hoping to buy Tahiri a birthday present (to make up for the not remembering her birthday situation mentioned in Conquest) while the two are on a business trip to Balmorra with Lando and Tendra, as both were anxious to get off of the Errant Venture for a while. What seems to be a nice outing, however, quickly turns deadly serious as we learn that a man named "Bomar Tag" who Lando is going to meet in order to procure supplies for Eclipse station, has actually aligned himself with the Yuuzhan Vong.

Instantly suspicious of the arrival of Calrissian and the two Jedi, Tag sends out his minions to apprehend those he fears are there to disrupt his secrets plans with the alien invaders. Soon Lando and Tendra are both in Bomar Tag's possession, but Anakin and Tahiri manage to evade capture, leaving them alone on the streets of Balmorra.

When the pair ends up befriending one of Balmorra's warring swoop gangs named the Black Knights, the stage is set for a conflict between the two groups as we learn that their rival swoop gang, the Rancors, is actually working for Bomar Tag. The showdown takes place as Anakin and Tahiri make a desperate attempt to free Lando and Tendra, when matters are further complicated by the arrival of the Yuuzhan Vong.

One of the best things about MHR is the extensive cast of original characters that Tahi brings to life, and who exist so easily amongst the canon characters that their introductions appear seamless. From the Black Knights leaders, Rongo and Blue, to Bomar Tag's adopted Twi'lek daughter, Dajira, to a family of "Mantrusians" locked away with Tendra, the original characters in MHR often seem to steal the show, as they are so well-rounded and interesting, with individual personalities that make them some of the most memorable in fan fiction.

But the heart of the story is Anakin and Tahiri, and their budding romantic relationship amidst the chaos after being best friends for so many years. Tahi's characterization of the pair is flawless. She easily captures the humor involved, as well as the deeper emotions and pain enveloping them both in this period.

Throughout, Many Happy Returns is an exciting and enthralling tale that leaves the reader begging for the next post, and some of the most fun you'll ever have reading fan fiction.

Loyalties Lost
~sketch by FalconFan~

Remember those breath-taking sketches by FalconFan in our first issue? Well, here she is again with her beautiful but haunting impression of Tahiri after the Dark Nest books.

In accordance with spoiler policy her explanation of the drawing is shielded, so only de-highlight it if you don’t mind being spoiled.

This is Tahiri after she, Tesar Sebatyne and Lowbacca are sent by Luke to Dagobah "to meditate on what it means to be a Jedi Knight." They were all in a state of confusion at the time, and felt deserted and betrayed by those they had trusted. I thought it would be doubly hard on Tahiri; having her faith in Luke badly shaken, and her faith in Jacen Solo essentially shattered, she would naturally be in emotional turmoil - something even more difficult to deal with because of her part-Yuuzhan Vong nature. I could see her trying very hard to get things straight in her mind, sorting out what and to whom she was truly loyal. This was the image that coalesced:

Feature Article
A certain kind of magic: young Anakin and Tahiri

"Bantha got your tongue?" Tahiri teased.

"As usual, I was just waiting for the chance to get a word in edgewise," Anakin replied."

In this article I'm going to take a look at the Junior Jedi Knights books and explore the way they represent Anakin and Tahiri both individually and as a "team". I won't be delving into the text too deeply, because the series was written for children and young teens, and therefore the writers didn't have the need or the scope for some of the more complex sub-texts we see in the NJO. Nevertheless, a clear picture of the personalities of the two young Jedi emerges in the way they approach various challenges and also in the reported views of their elders, notably Luke and Ikrit. Another very strong feature that runs through the series is the sense of their importance as a duo, and as the very first book in the series begins with a passage that focuses on this, this is probably the best place to start. Courtney_Solo chose this piece as her favourite in the last issue, but I'll repeat it again here as a ready reference. It's the Prologue on page 1 of The Golden Globe in which Nancy Richardson describes the first meeting between Anakin and Tahiri.

Nothing could have prepared him for the girl who stood before him. Her pale blond hair moved in swirls as if an invisible wind was stirring it. Her eyes, as they met his own ice blue ones, sparkled in delight. There was no shyness in the smile that crinkled the corners of her eyes and made their deep green color dance in waves. Anakin said nothing. He was lost for a moment in the events that had brought him to this place. That had brought him to this room. And this girl.

The tone in this passage can almost be described as prophetic, the phrasing and repeated demonstratives: "this place", "this room", "this girl" giving it a sense of portent. The strong use of visual imagery and the sense of quiet, emphasised in the description of Tahiri's hair moving as if stirred by "an invisible wind" and also in Anakin's silence, act together to stretch the time taken by the meeting out into a kind of timeless moment. The impact it has on Anakin, making him lose himself in the events that had brought him there, enhance our feeling that this is a moment of great importance.

The description of Tahiri, as seen from Anakin's point of view, is also worth noting, especially when we consider the idiosyncratic way he sees her. It's amazingly detailed, which in turn gives us some hint of Anakin's analytical and observant nature, but more interesting in my opinion is the fact he compares her hair and eyes to natural objects capable of great power: the wind and the green Yavin rivers. It appears that right from the start Anakin associates Tahiri with strength, or more precisely a kind of inherent strength that is natural rather than obvious or showy. It is also a strength that has the potential to be destructive, just as winds and rivers sometimes are. I find myself wondering if it's this latent fierceness that, at least to a certain extent, draws him to her even at this young age. It's certainly food for thought anyway.

And then there's her smile, which he sees as containing "no shyness", suggesting that Anakin senses her as being a forthright girl and not at all self-aware. His observation that the smile makes the colour in her eyes "dance in waves" implies she possesses a kind of happy energy. It also confirms for us that the things that appear to affect him the most about Tahiri are not so much her physical features, but the qualities of character that he sees hiding behind them. We see that Anakin thinks deeply and seriously about things, and yet he doesn't hesitate to accept Tahiri's suggestion that they be friends. For a boy who had few friends, and who liked "to think, to figure out choices" (page 72, TGG) this was a big step.

As the first weeks of their Jedi training pass, they discover that their strength as a team lies in their ability to complement each other's strengths. For instance, in trying to lift an object in one of Tionne's lessons, Anakin commands the weight to be light while Tahiri focuses on lifting it. The result is that the object shoots up to the ceiling much to their bemusement and their instructor's amusement. The event that truly consolidates their partnership, however, is the dream - Tahiri's recurring childhood dream of the river that, once she reaches Yavin 4, suddenly assumes unexpected significance.

All her life Tahiri had experienced a dream in which she was paddling a silver raft on a river, when a storm sweeps her into the water. Once on Yavin, however, the dream changes to include Anakin, and then, even stranger, Anakin starts to have the dream instead of Tahiri. Not only that but he begins hearing a voice, that he is sure is that of a Jedi Master, urging him to follow the dream. Tahiri takes this as a sign that destiny has brought the two of them together. Anakin tries to fight this idea although he can't explain the voice, or why the dream has chosen to swap hosts. He believes the dream shows them what they must do, but that the reason is more complex than Tahiri’s idea about destiny. It seems to suggest more that they are being brought together by the Force. Eventually he accepts Tahiri's belief that somehow the two of them are linked even though he doesn't understand how or why.

This sequence (pp41-44, TGG) tells us quite a lot about their personalities. Tahiri has no trouble accepting the oddness of the "dream-sharing", nor is she hesitant to tell Anakin about his appearance in her dream in the first place, even though she runs the risk of Anakin assuming she has a crush on him (p28 TGG). He on the other hand is more guarded about telling her he had the dream, and more analytical about what conclusion to draw from it. He also attempts to protect her by not allowing her to follow the dream and raft the river, but Tahiri will have none of this.

"But I have to come with you. We've both had the dream, and that means we're both supposed to raft the river. Something is calling to us, Anakin," Tahiri said in a faltering voice. "And even though I'm scared, I'm going with you."

The dream incident shows not only that Tahiri is determined to share equal footing with Anakin in any of their adventures, but also that the connection she and Anakin possess works at a subconscious level. We see this in the fact that, when Anakin takes over dreaming the dream, Tahiri is mysteriously able to sleep peacefully. (p55, TGG) Ultimately the action they take in following their dream is based on their mutual trust of their instincts, and by their faith in each other; and also in the fact that, whether they understand it or not, they realize they make a good team.

In The Golden Globe, we learn that the adults are similarly unable to explain the connection between the two children, although they accept that it is meant to be. Ikrit, for instance, is moved by the Force to guard the Golden Globe for four hundred years until at last he senses the right children, with the power to break its curse, arriving on Yavin. After his faith in Anakin and Tahiri is vindicated and they successfully free the spirits imprisoned in the Globe, he chooses to remain with them, and takes a special interest in their training and development. It is obvious that he regards them as having a power that he wants to have some part in nurturing.

Luke also senses an inexplicable connection between the two students. He acknowledges that they are powerful individually, but that together they have the potential to be a "stronger unit than many adult Jedi teams", and he comes to realise that Tahiri and Anakin are meant to train together. (p110, TGG) As the two race fearlessly into more adventures his respect for them grows, and he realises that "his nephew and Tahiri were tied together by more than their bond of friendship" and he "could hardly fathom the strength still to be developed" in them. (p95, Promises)

This theme of the Force choosing Anakin and Tahiri to work together runs through all six JJK books. At the same time, we see many examples of their individual skills, strengths and also a few foibles. Tahiri, for instance, is shown to be highly intuitive in the sense that she recognises the problems Anakin has with his name. Not long after they first meet, she reprimands him for thinking he is of special interest to the Dark Side:

"Just because your grandfather was Darth Vader doesn't mean you are going to serve the dark side of the Force. You aren't your grandfather. You are your own person, and you can make your own choices." (p80-81, TGG)

This insight amazes and surprises Luke, and prompts him to comment on Tahiri's wisdom - not something he expected from a nine-year-old. (LosDosMos actually goes into this little scene later in the "Thanks for the Memories" section.) Her reading of Anakin's fears extends also to his concern at living up to his family's expectations. When she realises the trouble they are in for leaving the academy to raft the river and follow their dream, she suggests she take the blame for the idea because she sensed it was "vitally important" that Anakin become a Jedi. She tells him:

"There are a lot of people counting on you to be a great Jedi Knight like your uncle . . . It doesn't matter if I'm returned to Tatooine. I don't have a destiny to fulfil." (p103-4, TGG)

The one thing Tahiri can't understand about her friend is his capacity for understanding and "feeling" machines - an ability, we are told in Anakin's Quest, that she finds "spooky."

Even at this early stage of his training, Anakin's abilities suggest that Luke is correct in his belief that his nephew will become a powerful Jedi. He's also intelligent, and at the beginning of TGG we are told that:

"By the age of five, Anakin knew how to take apart computers and put them back together. . . . He loved any kind of puzzle, whether it was taking apart machinery and learning how to rebuild it or figuring out difficult word games with his mind." (p4, TGG)

His latent power, however, is a source of concern to Leia, who is described as worrying that it will put him in danger, both from himself and from others who might be attracted to it, especially as he tends to be a loner. Her fear is not without foundation, for not only do we see Anakin himself being haunted to an extent by his nominal connection to Darth Vader, but also we are shown that he is capable of a little arrogance and duplicity.

The arrogance is demonstrated early in TGG in his thoughts as he leaves home to travel to the Jedi Academy. He believes that his parents don't really understand that he's not afraid to leave Coruscant and all that is familiar to him, for all he can see is that he can't wait to get to the Jedi academy and begin to train just like Jacen and Jaina had. He, typically for a child, misses the fact that their concern is more due to the fact he's a Solo-Skywalker, and therefore a handy target for enemies. He also feels that the adults in his life misinterpret his need to spend time by himself as shyness, and claims it was "a mistake even his mother and father made." In addition to this little foible, we see that no sooner has he met everyone at the academy than he is, somewhat sneakily, making mental notes to "learn the best times to sneak away from the group." (p13, TGG)

I find myself smiling at this early description of his belief that he knows better than most adults, because it reminds me of several passages in Greg Keyes' EoV duology - notably the one where he charges off to save Tahiri and the Jedi Academy, but also several scenes where he and Corran match wits. I am also impressed with the way these books show his independence, and his belief in his own strength. In Anakin's Quest for instance, when his dreams have convinced him that he must go to the cave on Dagobah in order to rid himself of his fear of turning to the dark side, we see him confronting Luke: "Then get me an X-wing . . . I'll fly there myself if I have to," he says in response to his uncle's suggestion that he would prefer they didn't go.

With all this ability, and confidence, it would have therefore been quite easy for Anakin to become big headed, or possibly fall prey to the dark side. However what the JJK books show quite strongly, in my opinion, is the tempering effect of Tahiri in his life. This is no doubt why the Prologue is given such a prophetic tone, for their meeting is indeed both vitally important and a result of destiny and the Force at work. One thought that struck me as I read was that it was Anakin's desire to be alone so he could think that led him to the room where he first met up with Tahiri. Looking at in these terms, it can certainly be argued the meeting was meant to be.

One of the most appealing aspects of the portrayal of Anakin and Tahiri in the JJK books is the way they genuinely care about each other, and their fellow Jedi trainees. When Tahiri offers to take the blame for their rule-breaking excursion to the Palace of the Woolamander, Anakin refutes her assertion that she doesn't "have a destiny to fulfil." He replies that if he is meant to be a Jedi Knight so is she, and she is important to him. "I'm your family know. I care about what happens to you. . . . We're a team." (p3 TGG) And later, in Kenobi's Blade, both children show they feel responsible for what happens to Uldir when we see them admitting that they feel they failed him as friends. Both have a strong sense of responsibility, and are unafraid to admit to their mistakes; both are honorable. Anakin is also quite protective of Tahiri, a fact we see when he tries to distract her attention from the fact she has tripped over the bone of a child's arm in the Palace of the Woolamander. He tries to avoid having to tell her what it is, and when this fails he asks gently:

"Do you want to turn back?"

"No," Tahiri replied. "We have to go on."

"Okay. But since you won't turn back, at least let's do this together," Anakin said. They joined hands and slowly walked downward. (p77, TGG)

Personally I can't think of a better image with which to end, because it is this theme of togetherness that pervades all six books in the JJK series. Individually, as Luke observes in TGG, both Anakin and Tahiri are powerful, but it is their strength when working together that is unique. They are shown to both complement each other and to support and care for each other, so much so that their connection is as if they were family. The overwhelming feeling the series gives readers is that they found each other through the Force, and that the Force is truly with them.

2) These are SHORT stories. No multiple post entries.
3) The above item must be relevant to the story. No passing mentions.
4) It can be any genre you want it to be. Humor, romance, action, you name it. Obviously, will find some challenges easier to incorporate into particular genres.
5) Both and Anakin and Tahiri must be actively involved in your story, though that's a given.
6) You will have one month to complete your story. All entries must be posted in the Beyond the Saga Forum by 12:00 midnight Board Time on August 31. The topic must clearly indicate that you are an A/T challenge contestant.
7) All entries must also be PMed to each judge:
Whitey
YodaKenobi
TahiriSoloFan

This will make our job so much easier.

Judging:
Each judge will write a review and give a score out of 10 for every entry. All scores and reviews will be sent to me via PM, NOT posted on the boards. I will compile a summary of each judge’s responses and combine the scores for a total out of 30 points. Whoever has the most points at the end obviously wins.

The winner will be announced in this thread as soon as possible after I have compiled every score. I'll give everyone a heads-up beforehand.
Have fun, and any questions, PM me.

Thanks for the Memories
~This month’s contributor is LosDosMos~
LosDosMos's choice is taken from The Golden Globe by Nancy Richardson.

“Uncle Luke, it’s my fault too,” Anakin said softly. His eyes met Luke’s. “I chose to go with Tahiri. I’m responsible for my choices.”

Tahiri couldn’t help letting a small smile cross her lips. Anakin had finally said he was responsible for his choices. It wasn’t that she was happy that he was sharing the blame; she’d expected Anakin to do that. It was that he had taken a step toward understanding that he had the power to make his own choices. That meant he had the power to choose to use the Force for good. Anakin didn’t have to be like his grandfather Darth Vader if he didn’t choose to be.

Luke turned toward Tahiri. He had seen her smile. Luke was surprised to see that the young girl understood that Anakin had difficulty in recognizing that he could make his own choices. Luke, Leia, and Han had known for some time that the boy believed he might turn out to be like his grandfather. Perhaps, Luke thought, Leia shouldn’t have named her son Anakin. After all, Anakin Skywalker was a difficult man to come to understand. This had been true even for Luke.

So much wisdom in a child so young, Luke thought as he stared at Tahiri. The girl was a mess. Her hair was full of leaves and small twigs. Her orange jumpsuit was soaked through. And her bare feet were covered in mud. But so much wisdom, Luke thought in amazement.

Luke Skywalker closed his eyes. He knew in his heart that Anakin Solo was meant to be a powerful Jedi. He would serve the light side of the Force well, once he understood completely that Darth Vader’s choices had nothing to do with his own. And the younger one, Tahiri, continued to surprise Luke. On Tatooine he had thought she was strong in the Force. But he had not imagined the extent of the strength and power that lay deep within her. There was also a strange connection between the two students. Alone they were powerful. But together they could make a stronger unit than many adult Jedi teams. Luke felt that Tahiri and Anakin were meant to train together, that perhaps in the future they would serve the Force as a team.

At this point in their relationship, Tahiri and Anakin haven’t known each other very long, but they already care deeply about each other and have a strong bond. Despite her young age, Tahiri instinctively understands Anakin’s doubts and inner turmoil about himself and his namesake.

Throughout their relationship, this sort of intuition becomes the norm between them.

I also love this passage because of Luke’s insights into Tahiri’s character, and what she and Anakin will mean to each other in the future. Often Tahiri is thought of as Anakin’s cute, talkative sidekick/girlfriend, but she is a compelling and powerful person in her own right. It’s nice to see Luke realize and recognize this.

Solo Brats
~art work by angel_gidget~

Talented artist angel_gidget gives us this snapshot of the Solo kids as youngsters and don’t you just love the way she matches their activities to their personalities? She says: "Solo Brats is just a rare example of my ability to do "cute n' cuddly." It basically shows their interests as children (& even as adults for that matter): Jaina with her machines, Jacen with his animals, and Anakin with his puzzles and logic problems."

RPG Report: Instalment Two
Building on the information he gave us in the last issue, JediAlly looks at some of the revisions to the Revised Core Rulebook for the Star Wars Roleplaying Game and makes some predictions about Anakin and Tahiri's stats in the Revised New Jedi Order Sourcebook.

[Please note that much of the information presented here comes from the Revised Core Rulebook for the Star Wars Roleplaying Game. All copyright legalities belong to them.]

REVISED CORE RULEBOOK CHANGES

In 2002, shortly after the release of Attack of the Clones, Wizards of the Coast released the Revised Core Rulebook for the Star Wars Roleplaying Game. This is the result of players asking many questions over the vagueness of various rules in the original version. So the staff at Wizards of the Coast got together, looked at the core rulebook, and then made a major revamping of the rules and stats.

In my opinion, the Revised Core Rulebook is a major improvement over the original. New feats, new skills, and new rules have made things easier for the players of this game to recreate a Star Wars theme.

With these revisions came new stats for our favorite heroes and villains of the movies. Unfortunately, there were no revised stats for the Solo kids and their friends. That oversight will be corrected in the forthcoming fan-made Revised New Jedi Order Sourcebook. At the moment, I will indicate any relevant changes to what had been posted in the previous article.

Class Features
Jedi Guardian class features:

BASE ATTACK BONUS - No change

BASE SAVE BONUS - No change

Jedi Guardians receive special class features at the following levels:

At 1st level, the Jedi Guardian receives the following feats for free -
Exotic Weapon Proficiency (lightsaber)
Force-sensitive, Weapon Group Proficiency (blaster pistols)
Weapon Group Proficiency (simple weapons).
The Jedi Guardian also receives a lightsaber from his or her teacher. Later, the Jedi can build his or her own lightsaber.

The Jedi Guardian gains a bonus Force feat at 1st, 3rd, and 4th level. The bonus Force feat is selected from the following:
Alter, Control, Sense.
Once one of these feats is selected, its associated Force skills become class skills.

A Jedi learns to deflect blaster bolts and other projectiles with a lightsaber, thereby providing a dodge bonus to the Jedi’s Defense against such attacks. This ability is active only if the Jedi is carrying a lightsaber. However, using this ability in one round requires the Jedi to sacrifice his or her move action in the next round. Every time a Jedi gains deflect (defense), it provides a +1 bonus to Defense. Therefore, the dodge bonus is +1 at 1st level, +2 at 9th level, +3 at 13th level, and +4 at 17th level.

A Jedi can also learn to redirect blaster bolts back towards a target within one range increment of the Jedi’s position, and this increment is determined by the type of blaster. Like deflect (defense), deflect (attack) requires the Jedi to sacrifice his or her move action in the next round. It’s possible for a Jedi to use both of these in the same round. A Jedi can deflect up to one-half her Jedi level, rounded up. However, the redirected attack must first miss the Jedi by five or less. If the attack hits the Jedi, or misses by six or more, it can’t be redirected. Should a Jedi succeed in redirecting an attack, he or she immediately rolls an attack using the lightsaber attack bonus, and then applies a penalty, which depends on the Jedi level. As the Jedi advances in levels, the penalty decreases. At 3rd level, the penalty is -4, -3 at 11th level, -2 at 16th level, and -1 at 19th level.

At 6th level, the Jedi Guardian learns to extend her defensive and offensive deflection skills to others within two meters of the Jedi position. This allows a Jedi to provide a dodge bonus to anyone within two meters of his or her position, and deflect and redirect ranged attacks made against anyone within the same range.

At 2nd, 8th, 12th, and 18th level, the Jedi Guardian gains a bonus feat. The bonus feat must be selected from the following, and the Jedi Guardian must meet all prerequisites:
Acrobatic, Attuned, Combat Reflexes, Mettle, Power Attack, Quickness, Toughness, Weapon Finesse.

BONUS FEAT associated with becoming a Jedi Knight at 7th level
Same: Force Mastery, Knight Defense, Knight Mind, Knight Speed, Weapon Focus (lightsaber)

Added: Burst of Speed, Force Mind, Dissipate Energy, Lightsaber Defense

BLOCK
This is a modified version of the deflect (defense) that allows the Jedi guardian at 9th level to deflect a ranged attack without the use of a lightsaber. The Jedi must have some form of protective gear, like a set of armored gauntlets, or something that can withstand the attack.

Wizards of the Coast at their web site have indicated in their Jedi Counseling area that a Jedi can use the Block special quality bare-handed, which explains how Yoda and Dooku were able to block Force lightning. Furthermore, the Jedi doesn’t need to have nine levels as a Jedi Guardian. If the Jedi can achieve a +2 bonus with his or her deflect (defense) by way of a combination of Jedi Guardian levels and levels in a Jedi prestige, he or she automatically receives the block special quality.

Bonus feats associated with becoming a Jedi master at 13th level have been removed. There is now the Jedi Master prestige, which has its own special qualities.

Damage inflicted by a lightsaber at various levels is the same – same amount at the same levels.

DEFENSE BONUS:
At 1st level, the Jedi guardian has a defense bonus of +3, +4 at 3rd level, and this bonus increases by 1 every two levels afterwards.

REPUTATION - No change

Additional note:
With the inclusion of various Jedi prestiges, it’s possible for a Jedi to gain deflect (defense) and deflect (attack) at certain levels. These prestiges also have their own base attack bonus, base save bonus, defense bonus, and reputation progression, as well as special qualities. All of these stack with the associated properties of the Jedi guardian class.

CREDITS:
A 1st-level Jedi guardian starts play with 1d4 _ 250 credits.

Skills
Normal skills
BALANCE (Dex)
Your character can keep his or her balance while walking on a tightrope, a narrow beam, a ledge, or an uneven floor. Anakin and Obi-Wan used this to keep on the beam during their fight in Revenge of the Sith.
Your character can walk on precarious surfaces. A successful check lets your character move at half his or her speed along the surface. Failure means your character can’t move for that round. A failure by five or more indicates the character falls.

Surface_____________DC
17.5 – 30 cm wide-----------10
5 – 15 cm wide---------------15
Less than 5 cm wide--------20
Uneven floor-------------------10
Angled surface----------------+5
Slippery surface--------------+5

If the surface is angled and slippery, the effects are cumulative, thus adding 10 to the DC.

If your character is attacked while he or she is balancing, the attack gains a +2 on the attack roll, and your character loses any Dexterity bonus to his or her Defense. Your character can retain his or her Dexterity bonus to his or her Defense if he or she had at least five ranks in this skill. If the attack deals damage to your character, he or she must make a Balance check immediately or fall.

Your character can move at full speed while using this skill, but this incurs a -5 penalty to the character’s roll.

Your character can take a 10 when making a Balance check, but not a 20.

If your character has the Steady feat and at least one rank in this skill, he or she receives a +2 aptitude bonus to this skill.

Using this skill is a move action. This skill can be used untrained. Your character can have no ranks in this skill, but can make skill checks normally.

CLIMB (Str)
DC - Example wall (incline of 60 degrees or steeper) or surface
0 = A slope too steep to walk up, a knotted rope with a wall to brace against
5 = A knotted rope with a wall to brace against, or a knotted rope, but not both
10 = A surface with ledges to hold on to and stand on, such as a very rough wall
15 = Any surface with adequate handholds and footholds (natural or artificial), such as a very rough natural rock surface or tree, an unknotted rope
20 = An uneven surface with some narrow handholds and footholds
25 = A rough surface, such as a natural rock wall or a brick wall
25 = Overhang or ceiling with handholds but no footholds
-10 = Climbing inside an air duct or other location where one can brace against two opposite walls
-5 = Climbing a corner where you can brace against perpendicular walls
+5 = Surface is slippery

A perfectly smooth, flat vertical surface can’t be climbed.

-Since you can’t move to avoid an attack while climbing, opponents get a +2 bonus on attack rolls against you.
-If your character sustains damage while climbing, he or she must make a skill check or fall.
-Your character can move at full speed while using this skill, but this incurs a -5 penalty to the character’s roll.
-If you think you can catch yourself while falling down a wall, forget it. Take the wall’s DC, add 20, and that’s the DC your character’s roll needs to beat. A slope (incline of less than 60 degrees) is easier to catch yourself on, as you only need to add 10 rather than 20 to the slope’s DC.
Your character can take a 10 when making a Climbing check, but not a 20.
-If your character has the Athletic feat, he or she receives a +2 aptitude bonus to this skill.

COMPUTER USE (Int)
-Your character can take a 10 when making a Computer Use check, but not a 20.
-If your character has the Gearhead feat, he or she receives a +2 aptitude bonus to this skill.

CRAFT (Int)
-Your character can take a 10 when making a Craft check, but not a 20.

INTIMIDATE (Cha)
-If you fail, any attempt to retry won’t work.
-Your character can take a 10 when making an Intimidate check, but not a 20.
-If your character has the Headstrong feat, he or she receives a +2 aptitude bonus when using this skill.

JUMP (Str)
-Your character uses this skill to leap over pits, vault low fences, or reach a tree’s lowest branches.
-Your character can take a 10 when making a Jump check. You can take a 20, but only if there’s no danger associated with falling. There is no danger associated with jumping to try and grab the lowest branch on a tree, but there was a lot of danger present when Luke and Leia leapt across the gaping access shaft in ANH. They could have failed, taken a long fall, and sustain massive damage.
-If your character has the Acrobatic feat, he or she receives a +2 aptitude bonus to this skill.

KNOWLEDGE (Int)
-Your character can take a 10 when making a Knowledge check, but not a 20.

PILOT
-Your character can take a 10 when making a Pilot check, but not a 20.
-If your character has the Spacer feat and at least one rank in this skill, he or she receives a +2 aptitude bonus to this skill.

PROFESSION (Wis)
-Your character can take a 10 when making a Profession check, but not a 20.

TUMBLE (Dex)
-Your character can also use this skill to perform tumbles when entertaining an audience.
-Your character can take a 10 when making a Profession check, but not a 20.
-If your character has the Acrobatic feat and at least one rank in this skill, he or she receives a +2 aptitude bonus to this skill.

Feats
A feat is a special feature that either gives your character a new capability or improves one he or she already has. Your character gains a feat at the 1st level, then again at 3rd, 6th, and every three levels afterwards.

Normal feats:
ACROBATIC
Your character is very agile and therefore receives a +2 aptitude bonus to all Jump and Tumble checks. I believe Tenel Ka would have this feat, as would any gymnast.

COMBAT REFLEXES
Your character can respond quickly and repeatedly to opponents who let their guard down. When opponents leave themselves open to attack, your character can make a number of additional attacks equal to the character’s Dexterity modifier. However, with or without this feat, your character can make only one attack of opportunity on a single opponent. Also, sometimes, for whatever reason, your character may be especially vulnerable to attacks at the beginning of a battle, and will remain so until his or her first turn in the initiative cycle. While in such a state, the character is flat-footed and can’t add his or her Dexterity bonus to his or her Defense. They also can’t normally make attacks of opportunity - however, if the character has this feat, he or she can make attacks of opportunity even if flat-footed.

EXOTIC WEAPON PROFICIENCY - No change

FORCE-SENSITIVE - No change

POWER ATTACK
Your character can make exceptionally powerful melee attacks, but your character must first have a Strength score of at least 13. On your action, you can subtract a number from all melee attack rolls and add this number to all melee damage. The number that’s subtracted and then added can’t exceed your base attack bonus. This lasts until your next action.

QUICKNESS
Your character is good at turning attacks that might deal damage to his or her person into near misses and glancing blows. This feat grants your character three additional vitality points and can be taken multiple times.

TOUGHNESS
Your character is tougher than normal. This feat grants your character three additional wound points and can be taken multiple times.

WEAPON FINESSE
Your character is especially skilled at using a certain weapon, one that can benefit as much from Dexterity as from Strength. Choose one weapon from this list:
cesta, combat glove, double-bladed lightsaber, force pike, knife, lightsaber, unarmed strike, vibroblade, vibrodagger.

With this feat, your character may use his or her Dexterity modifier instead of his or her Strength modifier on attack rolls made using the selected weapon. Your character must first be proficient with the selected weapon and have a base attack bonus of +1 before selecting this feat. Like the Exotic Weapon Proficiency, Weapon Group Proficiency, and Weapon Focus feats, your character can gain this feat multiple times, though it must be applied to a different weapon each time. I think Mara Jade has this, considering how at times in Survivor’s Quest, the situation calls for wielding a lightsaber with finesse.

WEAPON FOCUS - No change

WEAPON GROUP PROFICIENCY - No change

Force feats
ALTER
You no longer have the limited telekinetic abilities you initially get upon gaining this feat.

With this feat, the Jedi can use the following skills untrained:
-Affect Mind
-Drain Energy (Kyp Durron used this to drain the energy from Luke’s lightsaber during their confrontation in Dark Apprentice)
-Force Grip (the classic Force choking)
-Force Lightning (isn’t this skill obvious?) wink
-Force Strike (this replaces the Force Push Force skill and is what Jedi used to knock back the battle droids and also what Dooku used against Anakin after severing his arm in Attack of the Clones)
-Heal Another (similar to Heal Self Force skill, but applying it to another individual)
-Move Object.

In other words, the Jedi could have had no ranks in this skill, but he or she still could have made skill checks normally.

ATTUNED
You are in harmony with yourself through your connection with the Force, granting you a +2 aptitude bonus to all Enhance Ability and Heal Self checks. You must first have the Force-Sensitive and Control feats.

BURST OF SPEED
Your character doesn’t need to have a Dexterity score of at least 13.

CONTROL
With this feat, the Jedi can use the following skills untrained:
Force Defense, Force Stealth, and Heal Self.

Your character can also continue using Force skills after running out of vitality points by powering them with wound points. A wound point provides twice the power of a vitality point, but this can only be done when your character has zero vitality points.

DISSIPATE ENERGY
Your character can resist and sometimes absorb energy damage you would otherwise take because of your environment or because of an attack. Corran Horn probably has this feat, as he was able to absorb various forms of energy attacks and use the absorbed energy to power his Force abilities.

To do so, you must make a Fortitude saving throw against a DC equal to the amount of damage inflicted. Succeed, and not only do you not take any damage, you actually gain a vitality point for every two points of damage you would have taken, but you can’t exceed your maximum number of vitality points. Fail and you take full damage. Since this feat is used as a reaction, it costs no vitality points.

FORCE MASTERY- No change

FORCE MIND
Creating a Force Mind costs four vitality points plus one for each person included, and lasts for a number of rounds equal to your character’s Force-user level.

KNIGHT DEFENSE
-You don’t need to have a base attack bonus of +3.
-The dodge bonus provided by this feat stacks with any additional dodge bonuses your character has.

KNIGHT MIND
The targets of this feat, which doesn’t include your character, each gain a +6 bonus to a single ability score of your choice, and all those affect gain the bonus to the same ability score. This requires a full-round action to initiate and lasts for a number of rounds equal to your character’s Force-user level. Creating a Knight Mind costs twelve vitality points plus one for each person included.

KNIGHT SPEED
Your character doesn’t need to have a Dexterity score of at least 13.

LIGHTSABER DEFENSE
-You don’t need to have a base attack bonus of +3.
-The dodge bonus provided by this feat stacks with any additional dodge bonuses your character has.

METTLE
You have courage and the ability to face any threat through your connection to the Force, granting you a +2 aptitude bonus to all Battlemind and Force Defense checks. You must first have the Force-Sensitive and Control feats.

SENSE
With this feat, the Jedi can use the following skills untrained:
-Enhance Senses (Luke used this to see the Nightsisters riding the rancor in The Shadow Academy)
-Fear (Queen Amanoa used this against Ulic and Cay Qel-Droma and Tott Doneeta in the Knights of the Old Republic comics)
-See Force, and Telepathy.

If two characters with this feat have a close relationship, i.e. siblings, lovers, or lifelong friends, one of them can sense if the other one is injured or distressed.

Here are my speculations:

ANAKIN (Before the NJO)
-He’s going to get the special quality deflect (defense +1, attack -4)

-He’s going to gain another feat, courtesy of the 2nd level bonus feat a Jedi guardian receives. My best guess is either Attuned or Mettle, followed by the others except Power Attack. I don’t believe he’ll be getting Power Attack unless his attribute scores change.

-As for his skills, I can’t make any speculation about that.

TAHIRI (as of the beginning of Conquest)
-She’s going to get the special quality deflect (defense +1, attack -4)

-She may lose one of the following feats – Burst of Speed, Skill Emphasis (Survival), Weapon Focus (lightsaber). I don’t believe it will be Skill Emphasis (Survival).

-She will, however, gain another feat, courtesy of the 2nd level bonus feat a Jedi Guardian receives. My best guess is it will be either Attuned or Quickness. If not these, then either Acrobatic, Mettle, or Weapon Finesse. Combat Reflexes, Power Attack, and Toughness are at the bottom of the list.

-As for her skills, she’ll gain the Speak Tusken skill because she was raised by the Tusken Raiders. Since she was raised by Tusken Raiders, she might also gain the +2 species bonus on Hide, Move Silently, and Survival checks that all Tusken Raiders receive, and the Weapon Group Proficiency (primitive weapons) feat as a bonus feat. Other than that, I can’t make any further speculation.

Errata from Wizards of the Coast

Wizards of the Coast has posted on its site a downloadable PDF file that lists all the errata that had been created to address various errors that had been found in both editions. While you can download the file from the site, I have chosen to do so, look through it, and list the errata that are relevant to Anakin and Tahiri. In other words, errata to various special qualities, feats, and skills that have been listed with Anakin and Tahiri.

BLOCK:
Unless the Jedi has some form of protective gear, like a set of armored gauntlets, or something that can withstand the attack, like an energy shield or some suitably dense material, the Jedi must spend a Force Point to use this ability. Block doesn’t allow the Jedi to extend the defense beyond the Jedi’s position, and all other rules concerning deflect (defense) and deflect (attack) apply.

SKILLS
Balance: A Balance check doesn’t require an action; it is made as part of another action or as a reaction to a situation.”

CLIMB: Climbing is a part of movement, so it’s generally part of a move action (and may be combined with other types of movement in a move action). Each move action that includes any climbing requires a separate Climb check. Catching yourself when falling doesn’t take an action.

ENHANCE ABILITY: Taking 20 on an Enhance Ability check costs 60 vitality points (not 40 vitality points, as indicated).

FRIENDSHIP: The result of a Friendship check sets the DC for the target’s Will save.

Result----Will Saving Throw DC
Up to 4---5
5-14------10
15-24-----15
25-34-----20
35+-------25

A successful saving throw means that Friendship has no effect on the target.

JUMP: A Jump check is included in your movement, so it is a part of a move action. If you run out of movement mid-jump, your next action (either on this turn or, if necessary, on your next turn) must be a move action to complete the jump.

MOVE OBJECT:
Lifting or moving an object is a simple task; the maximum weight and size of object that you can move is determined by your check result, as shown on the table. You may move the object 4 meters, doubling the distance for every 5 points by which your check exceeds the roll necessary for an object of that size. For example, if you want to move a Medium-sized object and your Move Object check result is 31, you may move it up to 8 meters. (You may voluntarily lower your check result to reduce the vitality point cost.) You can continue to move the object on subsequent rounds by continuing to make successful checks and spending vitality points. If you fail a check in any subsequent round while attempting to move an object, the object falls to the ground.

If the target object is in the possession of another character (i.e., carried on their person), that character may make a Will save against the listed DC to negate the effect.

If you move an object and then drop it on another character, resolve using the rules for Hurling Objects (below). In the case of a physical obstruction, such as a ship stuck in the mud or caught under a fallen tree, the GM applies a penalty to your Move Object check using these guidelines: -5 for a slight obstruction, -10 for a moderate obstruction, and -15 for a severe obstruction.

MOVING A CHARACTER:
Using the Move Object skill on a character (i.e. living being or droid) allows it a Will saving throw against the listed DC. If the target fails its save, treat it as an object for purposes of determining distance moved. If the target succeeds, the skill has no effect and you still expend the vitality point cost. A target can willingly forgo its saving throw. A character can move himself with Move Object, albeit at a -10 penalty to his Move Object check.

MOVING A VEHICLE:
Using the Move Object skill on a vehicle or starship that is being piloted is more difficult than moving an inert object. The driver can make an opposed Pilot check as a reaction, adding a +4 bonus to his Pilot check for every size his vehicle is above Medium. If your Move Object result beats the opposed check and if your Move Object check is sufficient for the normal DC of an object of the vehicle’s size and weight, you may move the vehicle normally.

HURL OBJECT:
Move Object can be used to attack by throwing objects or characters. If your check result is high enough for the object’s size or weight (whichever is greater), you may hurl the object up to 4 meters to strike another target. If you exceed this result by 5 or more points, the distance you can move the hurled object doubles (as above) and it inflicts extra damage because you are hurling it with more energy.

Hurling an object requires a ranged attack roll to hit your target; treat it as a weapon with a range increment of 10 meters, a threat range of 20, and no maximum range (although your check result will set an effective maximum). When hurling an object of up to Medium size, you must beat the target’s Defense as per a normal ranged attack. When hurling an object of Large or greater size, treat the hurled object as a grenade-like weapon (no threat range). Anyone in the square(s) the hurled object lands in can make a Reflex save against the listed DC to take half damage. Being struck by a Large or greater size hurled object is otherwise treated as being struck by a falling object, possibly pinning the target or moving it to an unoccupied square.

If using Move Object to lift and drop an object as an attack, both the object and the target take normal falling damage instead of the damage listed on the table above; however, you must still make a ranged attack roll to hit your intended target. Calculate your range penalty based on the range to your target or the distance the object is dropped, whichever is greater.

If the hurled object is a vehicle or character, the check is either resisted by a Will save or opposed by a Pilot check, as described above. A hurled vehicle or character takes the listed damage according to the Move Object check result (no save allowed).

Moving an unattended object is a move action. Hurling an object, making an opposed Move Object check, or moving an attended object, resisting character, or piloted vehicle is a full-round action.

The vitality cost is one or more, depending on the above table.

TUMBLE:
Tumbling is a part of movement, so a Tumble check is a part of a move action.

FEATS

BURST OF SPEED:
Using this feat requires a free action and the expenditure of 5 vitality points; you can only activate this feat at the beginning of your turn, and once activated you may only use the actions Move, Run, Withdraw, or any free action until your next turn.

COMBAT REFLEXES:
You still only make one attack of opportunity per opportunity.

DISSIPATE ENERGY:
The DC for the Fortitude save should be 10 + the amount of damage inflicted. If the save is successful, you don’t take any damage and you gain 1 vitality point for every 2 points of wound damage.

EXOTIC WEAPON PROFICIENCY:
Doesn’t need a base attack bonus of +1.

KNIGHT SPEED:
Using this feat requires a free action and the expenditure of 8 vitality points; you can only activate this feat at the beginning of your turn, and once activated you may only use the actions Move, Run, Withdraw, or any free action until your next turn.

MASTER SPEED:
Using this feat requires a free action and the expenditure of 12 vitality points; you can only activate this feat at the beginning of your turn, and once activated you may only use the actions Move, Run, Withdraw, or any free action until your next turn.

POWER ATTACK:
If you attack with a two-handed weapon or with a one-handed weapon wielded in two hands, add the number subtracted from your attack rolls twice. You can’t add the bonus from Power Attack to the damage dealt with a light weapon (except with unarmed strikes or natural weapon attacks), even though the penalty on attack rolls still applies. (Normally, you treat a double weapon as a one-handed weapon and a light weapon. If you choose to use a double weapon like a two-handed weapon, attacking with only one end of it in a round, you treat it as a two-handed weapon.)

Anakin and Tahiri Forever
~graphic art by Courtney_Solo~

Courtney_Solo’s thread in the Fan Art forum is full of A/T gems. As a special treat for this issue of Anahiri, she has allowed us to post some of them. I’ll let Courtney talk you through them:

This first picture was done in GIMP by combining the lovely picture of Tahiri from the Japanese cover of Final Prophecy with the picture of Anakin Solo from whatever book cover it's from. The style used is the little icon of the hand with the finger pointing. (OK, now y'all MUST know I'm making this u, right? LOL) It is cover art for my fic Over the Course of Time (link in bio).

This next picture was inspired by the cover of some random book. (I'm thinking it's the Japanese cover of either Rebirth or Star by Star) The same style was used, and the color was not washed out this time. I think it came along quite nicely.

This “Anakin and Tahiri Collage” was made by combining the heads of all the Japanese Anakin and Tahiris into triangles. LOL. I kept the yellow/green background and spread it out a bit.

With this fourth one, I cut out Anakin's hands and brought them up a little higher, aligning them with his arm. It probably doesn't look any different, 'cause the difference isn't that drastic. I smudged the light around their faces and brought it out. Then I washed all the color out, making it black and white. I blacked out Corran's face and then evened out the color by smudging everything. Of course, no one can tell, because it's black and white ... LOL.

This final one was done in paint. Nothing fancy, just copying pictures, putting in black background, a little font ... You probably can't read it, so I'll type what it says "ANAKIN SOLO I AM A SOLO WITH ONE WEAKNESS. SHE COMPLETES ME ... WITHOUT HER I'D BE NOTHING ... I WOULDN'T HAVE THE STRENGTH TO LIVE, TO FIGHT, TO DIE ... ALL FOR THE ONE I LOVE" Awww...

And they keep on coming
~latest additions to the ATINDEX by Courtney_Solo~

“The Lovers” by Thrawn McEwok
Characters: Anakin Solo, Tahiri Veila
Summary: Canon-compliant A/T… set during Betrayal? My excuse is a theory that Kunra, the Yuuzhan Vong ex-warrior from the later NJO books, was actually Anakin, transformed by the Shapers. To that end, this ’fic stands in a continuity that also includes my earlier story Once a Warrior and the unfinished Blood Bonds. But you don’t have to have read either of those before you try this one!
Notes: Okay… this is a somewhat delayed entry to the Anakin/Tahiri ‘Japor’ challenge… which, as its name suggests, is supposed to involve Anakin/Tahiri and a japor snippet.

”Symbiosis” by Artanis
Timeframe: Post-Myrkr
Characters: Anakin, Tahiri, Kyp, Jaina, and others
Genre: Drama
Summary: A fairly extreme AU - what might have taken place if Kyp had gone with the Myrkr strike team, and Jacen had died there?

"The Meaning of Friendship" by Tahi
Characters: Anakin, Tahiri, Han, Jacen, Jaina, Luke and Kam
Summary: Anakin decides to get Tahiri a special memento
Notes: A/T “Japor Snippet” Challenge response.

”The Way Things Should Be” by Courtney_Solo
Timeframe: NJO - Star by Star - Myrkr
Genre: Angst, some romance
Characters: Anakin Solo & Tahiri Veila
Summary: Things go vice-versa on Myrkr when Tahiri is left dying in Anakin's arms. He refuses to leave her side. Read more ...

”The Battle of Tzachar Khar” by Courtney_Solo
Timeframe: BytS - AU
Genre: Angst
Characters: Anakin, Tahiri, Jacen, Jaina, Jag Solo plus a cast of OCs
Summary: Three teams are sent to an unsafe, unscouted area, thinking it to be considerably safe, by night. Only 5 men will make it back. Who will be exterminated?
Notes: This is dedicated to the men and women who gave their lives for the United States. This vignette is based on the true battle that occurred in March 2002 in the Rescue at Roberts Ridge. Thanks for the plot bunny.

”A Piece of Japor” by Kidan
Summary: A/T Challenge Entry

”My Treasure” by Courtney_Solo
Timeframe: BytS
Characters: The Fearsome duo, Anakin Solo & Tahiri Veila
Notes: This is a one-poster response to the Anahiri Challenge: A Japor Snippet

Yavin Academy by darkladypurplepencil
Characters: Mainly Jag, Jaina, Jacen, Anakin, Zekk, Lowie, Tenel Ka, and Kyp, but many other characters are involved.
Summary: She despised him; he loathed her. It was obvious they were meant to be...
Notes: I don't hate Zekk, but I did hate his actions in DN, so I've drawn a lot from that.

Gone by Handmaiden_Rabe
Characters: Jaina, Tahiri, Jacen, Anakin
Genre: Angst

Gremlins by Kidan
Timeframe: Post YJK, No NJO
Characters: H/L, J/TK, J/Z, A/T
Summary: Han gets Jacen a new gift for his naming day.
Notes: This plot bunny bit me while I was watching Gremlins the other day. Hope you enjoy.

Summary: A Naruto/Young Jedi Knight crossover. The Rock Dragon crashes near Konoha Village in the Land of Fire during the start of Naruto II. Jacen goes off to find some help from the nearby settlement, and runs into Naruto Uzamaki who mistakes him for an enemy...
Notes: This is an J/TK Nash, N/H ship, Saku/Sasu ship, Z/J ship, and L/RT ship.

”Death's Gates” by Emperion_Blade_Gaurd
Genre: Songfic
Summary: An Anakin/Tahiri angst songfic.
Notes: The song is "So I Thought" By Flyleaf. Anyone who has never heard of them should fix that problem, immediately!

”Exile on Dagobah” by DARTH_MU
Timeframe: Fifty years since DN3
Characters: Tahiri, Anakin. Others
Genre: AU, Vignette
Keywords: What happens to Tahiri Veila as she is exiled on Dagobah?
Summary: After fifty years of routine on Dagobah, what's in store for our three exiles?

Miss me, Mother?
~art work by angel_gidget~

Get your tissues ready for this heart-rending picture of Anakin and Leia that angel_gidget created as part of her NJO Mythology series. Here she explains the background to the picture:

"Miss me, Mother?" was not a scene that actually happened, but a scene that should have. When Anakin died, Jacen, Jaina, Tahiri, and all the others of the strike team were right in the thick of it. They were forced to carry on with the mission and grieve in their own ways later. Luke had Mara with him, and she forced him to shove away the pain for Ben's sake. Leia, however, was all alone in a little room when her baby boy was taken. She was curled up, traumatized and humbled, and pain like that deserves some recognition. Leia deserved closure more than anyone. This was my representation of that. It is also my first illustration of Anakin as a ghost. I originally did this for part of a mythology challenge under the theme of the afterlife.”

Once upon a time in a galaxy far, far away . . .
~the authors chat about what they're up to~

YODAKENOBI says:
Currently in The Age of Heroes, Anakin and Tahiri are searching for a mysterious being called "Faybol," whose capture might prevent a war between the Galactic Alliance and Faybol's people. While investigating on Nar Shaddaa, Anakin's apprentice Jysella is kidnapped by one of Faybol's alien guards and wisked off to an unknown location. Now Anakin and Tahiri's search for Jysella and their prey has led them to Dantooine, where both will be forced to confront horrors from their pasts, and the galaxy's.

TAHI says:
Still no internet at home, but the leg has been freed from its plaster cast. Hooray! Work has been hectic - it's the winter busy season downunder - so I have only managed to write one very short story: "The Meaning of Friendship". It's set in the JJK era and tells what happens when Anakin has the brilliant idea of getting Tahiri a snippet of Japor as a reminder of her home world. Unfortunately the snippet closely resembles Jacen's latest pet - a somewhat soporific salamander, and, well, as you can guess, things become a little confusing. Thanks again to Whitey and his excellent challenge ideas.

COURTNEY_SOLO says:
My newest Anakin & Tahiri 'fic is actually a vignette called ”The Battle of Tzachar Khar”. It mainly features Anakin Solo and his fellow counterparts in the battle against the Yuuzhan Vong. It is angst, with a sweet A/T moment at the end. This was inspired by a true battle in the War Against Terror.

My more A/T romance vignette is ”The way things should be”. It is where Tahiri takes Anakin's place on Myrkr, so consequently she is the one who is dying. A lovely angst vignette with Tahiri dying in Anakin's tender embrace. Read it!

The Solo Gods
~art work by angel_gidget~

Continuing her mythological theme work, angel_gidget has created this marvellous piece.

"The Solo Gods", she explains, "was my second depiction of Anakin as a ghost. It was also done for the mythology challenge and the theme was Children of the Gods. I figured that since the Solo children were worshiped as gods by the Yuuzhan Vong anyway, and were also the children of very important figures, they would be appropriate for the piece."

The usual suspects
Your friendly Anahiri:Sound and Silence team thank you for reading, and hope to feed you some more A/T goodness in the next issue.
