LOL Like Thrawn - I was just about to post in the Index last night, and then I suddenly thought that maybe I'd better wait and make sure you guys had finished posting your fill-up posts.
The Index looks wonderful. Great job - and thanks Yoda and Red. I like the organisation by author, and the lovely colours. Loooove pretty colours.
Yes - really I don't think we're changing this thread as such. It will still be a nice comfy common room to chat and chill. [cushions scattered around and a table with assorted A/T fics and pics ] The only difference will be that now we have a new index, we can use that as the place to post new story links.
So - this thread for chat, magazine and discussion.
Index for new story links.
Does that sound okay to everyone?

For the record, I'm wary of too-sharp distinctions and too-definite rules; but I think I'm overreacting. I'll follow your lead on this...
The new 'fic I would have flagged had I been allowed to is here, though.
You're all welcome to bite my head off for refusing to take the rules entirely seriously...

LOL [slaps Thrawn with big wet fish then dashes off doing silly walk]
I don't like rules either. But I figure if we have a lovely new Index we might as well maximise it and use it for what it is intended to do, i.e. advertise stories. And it would be good to get some discussion going here, especially as we have magazine articles on site, and therefore some material to get us going.
For a starter:
Does anyone have stuff to add about the YJK series - things you've noticed about the characterisation of A and T that I didn't mention in the article in the last issue?

I didn't think they were in the YJK books, just the JJK books. I think Anakin might have been around at the end, but that's it... maybe I'm wrong though. It's been a loooooooooong while since I read those books!

Duh - you're right, Jaya. Sorry - JJK not YJK. And yes - until I did a quick skim read for the article in the last magazine, it had been ages since I had read them, too. They're quite good wee books actually.
I did like that joke about the fluffy dice in Kenobi's Blade. LOL

Ah, nice to find a place to talk ad nauseum about my OTP- far too few others.
As for things I've notice about A/T, well, I did have one epiphany about Anakin.
In my opinion, if there was one word, one emotion to describe Anakin Solo, it would be fear- the fear of failure.
For the first 11 years of his life, Anakin had almost nightly dreams of becoming Darth Vader and destroying all his family had fought for- perhaps an after effect of Palpatine's attack. However, by the time he left for the Academy, he had already been instlled, deep down, to be believe he was flawed somehow, a ticking time bomb waiting to explode. This may be a factor in why he spent much of childhood friendless and reclusive.
The interesting thing is that the most far-reaching impact of this fear on Anakin's psyche was that it made it almost impossible for him to fall to the dark side, simply because he feared becoming his grandfather so. Notice that while Anakin has acted in ways that could be contrued as dark, such as stopping the krayt dragon's heart and setting fire to the forest- in both of these ocasions he was able to see the consequences of these actions, and neither were motivated by anger or hate, but simply by his fear of failure.
While his relationship with Tahiri had begun to heal this wound, it was only at a begining when the Yuuzhan Vong came. The war amplified his fear exponentially. This had the positive effect of making him far more resilient and gave him a distint unwillingness to give up- and it also led to him becoming extremely reckless in the defense of his loved ones. This is why the Edge of Victory duology is the greatest example of Anakin's character, becasue it showcased both this fear, and Anakin beginning to grow beyond it.
The ironic thing this means, though, is that Anakin Solo would've made the perfect Potentium Jedi.
On another note, this fear also ties into my personal crack theory- that Palpatine's attempt to take over Anakin's body was not completely unsuccesful. I look at it like installing an operating system on a computer, or rather, overwriting one. You completely annhilate whatever was saved into the old version, replace it in every way- except for the fact that the new operating system is empty, a void.
So what if Palpatine partially, or completely, replaced what would've been Anakin Solo with his own presence, but was only able to leave a vague impression of his memories/personality? Perhaps Anakin's deep-seeded fear was caused not by Darth Vader, but by lingering sub-conscious memories of Darth Sidious.

Yes, I think fear of failure was an aspect of Anakin's psyche. He also tends to assume blame for things - many of which are beyond his control anyway. IMO a lot of people with high empathy do that - and certainly people with a strong sense of social responsibilty. And yet at the same time, I guess you could see it as a bit egotistical in the sense that to take blame suggests you feel the other people involved aren't capable of being responsible - if you see what I mean.
Anyway, the fear of failure and tendency for self-blame are no doubt related, because, again, a lot of his fear of failure was connected with his concern for others. And this again is connected with his belief that a large part of the Jedi role was to protect the weak.
That's a very interesting idea about the Palpatine "imprint." I'll have to think some more about that, but I definitely feel it's a valid theory. I don't recall any writer ever using that as a possible factor on Anakin's mental make-up - and yet when you think about, it's a major event: an attempt to affect, and kind of tamper with, a growing foetus.
I agree that Tahiri tempered these tendencies - and I believe Anakin really needed her, and vice versa. I don't see it as a case of each neatly balancing out the other's weaknesses though - because let's face it, a negative and a positive equal zero. I see it more as a case of each helping the other to SEE their weak and strong points and building each other up, turning weknesses into strengths, and strengths into super-strengths.
