Since a lot of people have been asking lately, here’s a reminder of how you’re supposed to send in your story information.

Co-Author(s): {link=URL}name{/link} but ONLY if you have a co-author. If not, ignore it.

Notes:

Remember, if you don’t have all the information (like keywords, a co-author, etc.) then you don’t need to fill those spaces in.

Also, you are supposed to PM the information to Jaina_Jag_Index. If you send it to BigFatty, TKeira_Lea, or NYCitygurl, it just makes harder since we then have to forward it to the sock..

We also have a new review this month.

Title: Dreams (songfic)
Author: ccp
Characters: Jag, Jaina
Genre: songfic, angst
Summary: A songfic showing Jag's longing and reality.
Review: This is an excellent look into Jag's character during the Dark Nest trilogy. It is a songfic, which breaks up the sections nicely. It goes from Jag's dreams of the future, then hits reality. It goes back and forth. The emotion displayed is very raw and real. An excellent look into Jag's character.
Reviewer: FelsGoddess

This month’s interview is with our very own TKeira_Lea!!!

1) How did you get into writing on the boards?
Wow! Okay, do I really have to remember that far back? Seriously, though, there was all sorts of hype surrounding AotC and I was just realizing that you could find out all the dirt (spoilers and such) on the internet. So I googled AotC and landed at TFN. Then I found the Archives. I was in utter shock. I had composed innumerable tales in my mind about Obi-Wan, Qui-Gon, Padmé and the rest, and I was amazed to find that people actually wrote them down.

Needless to say I was hooked on reading fanfiction.

Then one day I discovered the boards, but I ended up devouring the Literature and Fanfic threads more than the AotC hype. Although I’d read some of the EU before, it wasn’t until I jumped into the NJO books that I really got hooked. Once I got caught up when I finished The Enemy Lines Duology by Allston, I found myself drawn back to the X-Wing series. Stackpole and Allston were by far my favorite EU writers at the time – and they still rank up there. I was completely enamored by all kinds of pilot stories, as well as the whole development of the Solo children in the NJO up to that point.

Wanting more, I became engrossed in the plethora of J/J stories being posted on the boards. I kept reading more and more, looking for someone to tell the kind of story I was looking for. At one point I was eagerly anticipating a particular J/J fanfic author putting up a long-awaited scene, and when it was finally posted I was disappointed. I simply had imagined the scene taking place in a completely different way.

It was at that point I realized I needed to write my own story.

2) Why J/J?

Good question. Long before Jag came into the picture I had an affinity for Jaina. There is a defiant edge to her that appeals to me. She has a raw blending of Han and Leia that makes her one of the great female characters in Star Wars – and also makes her one of the least understood. Much like in real life, a female lead with spunk, conviction, and the talent to back it up gets bestowed with loving monikers ranging from spoiled brat to… well, worse. People forget Jaina is still a Jedi and an honorable person. She’s prone to mistakes, yes, but still a woman who sacrificed much of her childhood to fight battles she easily could have walked away from. Spoiled brats don’t volunteer for suicide missions. I like Jaina, rough edges and all.

If Jaina were a man, she’d just be called a cool scoundrel.

When Jag showed up in the NJO I sat up and took note. I’m not really sure why, except perhaps that Jag’s persona has a certain similarity to my father that makes me connect with him.

While some don’t get his true nature, I do. I loved his character from the second I read the scene on the Tafanda Bay in Dark Tide: Ruin. As Jag evolved as a character in Dark Journey and The Enemy Lines Duology I began to see he was the perfect counterbalance to Jaina’s reckless energy, while still full of enough fire to give back as good as he got. To me, the chemistry was undeniable.

3) When will Jag make his triumphant return in Healing Hearts?

Ha! I’m not biting.

4) You've started the third story of your amazing trilogy. Tell us a little bit about it.

Okay, I’ll field this question. Might even bring up Jag in the process…

The Force Evolution Series was a story arc developed in my head before I ever started writing it. In honor of the Star Wars archetype I planned a trilogy, sketching out the main goals I needed to accomplish by the time I finished. Echoes of the Past (EotP) was the opening story, followed by Legacy. Healing Hearts (HH) is my work in progress and the third and final book, the grand finale. Sometimes it’s a little hard to believe I’m finally writing the epic endings and dramatic climaxes I’ve envisioned for over three years.

What most people don’t know is that the storyline of HH was originally part of Legacy. The third book originally was going to be another massive tale – equally as long as the original Legacy storyline (can you imagine?) – about the generation of Jedi after Jaina and Jacen Solo. But my ideas for the trilogy’s story just kept evolving as I wrote. Ultimately I realized the story of the Solo grandchildren really was a whole saga in and of itself, and that the trilogy was thematically more coherent as the tale of Jaina Solo. Thus Legacy was split and Healing Hearts born.

Hopefully, my fans will give me five years or so before pestering me for the sequel series to the Force Evolution Series.

Split or no split I always have had several goals in mind in telling this story. First, I was tired of Jaina being the damsel in distress in the NJO. I wanted her to get a fair shake at being the heroine, as much as Jacen and Anakin got to be the heroes. In the first story, EotP, I did just that, focusing on Jaina’s growth and participation in the war. While it was Jaina’s story, I still wanted to maintain Jacen’s pivotal role in the war. He’s there, and it’s both their skills in connecting with the Yuuzhan Vong that results in the defeat of Shimrra.

I also wanted to explore Jaina as a matriarchal figure while not losing her warrior edge. Really females are nurturers, but they can also be fierce and protective. So I wanted to see Jaina do both. It’s a tricky course to navigate but I think I’ve managed to weigh the balance between mother and warrior effectively. Being one certainly does not preclude being the other.

At the same time, I wanted to interweave Padmé’s role in the SW universe as a parallel to Jaina’s. It was a thrill to see that my idea of Artoo as the key to the revelation of Padmé’s identity was spot on when Troy Denning used it in the Dark Nest Trilogy. I took that revelation in a different direction, making Jaina a conduit for Padmé to share her past, and Padmé into a guide for Jaina on her life’s work.

Also, at the time I started the series RotS speculation was in full bloom. I had plenty of ideas about how George Lucas might write Anakin Skywalker’s fall, and I wanted to see if I could do the same thing – take a genuinely loved character, whom we knew to be “good”, and create the same tragic results. And most importantly manage to make the readers believe it. Jag’s fall in Legacy was my version of that character arc. While I love his character, I also think the very things that make him a hero could become warped into tragic flaws, a point where even a hero had reached his limits. For Jag, a man I envision as devoted to family above all else, the unraveling of his family’s security could shake his core until it crumbled. The question that remains after Legacy is, Can love be enough?

I used one of my favorite dynamics of the NJO to effect the tragedies of Legacy. During the NJO, some profic authors really loved to play up the green-eyed, dark-haired men in Jaina’s orbit; others disregarded it completely. I found the concept utterly fascinating - Zekk the first love, Kyp the infatuation and mentor, and Jag the equal and complement. For my story to work I needed to incorporate those basic elements, then mold them into the three different role players in Jaina’s universe – Zekk the possessive love, Kyp the unrequited love, and Jag the true love. I found the transition for each character natural. It’s been a fun character study if nothing else. The lesson learned: there is a fine line between love and hate. And as Kyp says, the lines keep moving.

My last goal for the series was to explore the evolution of the Jedi. Hence the title, Force Evolution. I won’t get into the specifics of how I will do that but I think it’s not a stretch to imagine Jaina as the matriarchal warrior, and somehow Jag, Zekk and Kyp playing an important part in the her future as it relates to the Jedi’s growth as Force users.

5) What inspires you to write J/J?

I just really enjoy writing the balanced straight man/scoundrel dynamic in their relationship. Unlike Han and Leia, whose tale is pretty much told, Jaina and Jag’s story is mostly unexplored territory. That’s what is so great about fanfiction.

Take for instance my newest story: Splinters, a post Dark Nest novella. Fans are all up in arms about the failing of the Jaina and Jag partnership in the EU, and also about Jaina’s time as a Joiner. Quite possibly there is a good explanation for why these things occurred; we just have to imagine them. So I’ve done just that, and wrote the story that fills all the gaps in the profic.

And hopefully mends their relationship in conclusion.

(March newsletter continued...)

6) Who is your favorite character and why?

Isn’t it obvious? Seriously, Jag is, for all the reasons I’ve listed above and more. I’ve gotten great joy from writing the many Jag POV vignettes that comprise Dreams of the Future, All Angles and now The Making of a Rebel. I’ve read his scenes in the books over and over, and have taken away the subtleties many people simply miss. When you read closely, you see he has an easily definable personality; yet some of those elements end up being misconstrued if you only look at them superficially. For example, Jag most definitely has a sense of humor and certainly has a rebellious streak. He’s not at all the cold, calculating automaton some people make him into.

I’d also point out that while most of my shorter vignettes are from Jag’s POV, almost none of the ending of Legacy was seen through Jag’s eyes. It’s a very popular tactic by profic writers to skew our perspective on a character by tainting it with other’s perceptions. (Like how few scenes from Jacen’s POV we get in The Swarm War.) In the EU we rarely see Jag’s POV, so the reader has to read between the lines for subtle clues of the truth of who he is. The same holds true in my story. I’ve left it ambiguous so readers can take away from the story what they need to, just as readers are free to do in the Extended Universe.

I think the mark of a good writer is the ability to create as many questions as you answer. I’ve used Jag to this end for my series.

7) Do you think there is hope for the EU after the DN trilogy?

Yes, I do. While I differ with him on some of his storyline choices, Denning is still incredibly wicked and crafty, and a champion of the OT characters and Jacen as well. Allston is my hero, loves the Rogues, Wraiths, and by association Jaina and Jag. Traviss is a fabulous writer, and in her own books she writes fabulously intricate female characters as well as finely crafted political intrigue. I have complete and utter faith in those three for LotF.

I’ll admit Denning had me a wee bit hopeless at the end of TUQ, but I think that was his plan all along. Well played, Mr. Denning. Subsequent comments of his have restored faith in my original ideas about where the powers that be at LFL would ultimately guide the Legacy of the Force era.

8) Any future works with Darth_Lex? An expansion on Chandrilla Surprise, maybe?

Oh, the evil partner and I will definitely be writing together again. Lately we’ve been exploring a couple of ideas. We’ve discussed a LotF speculation piece centered around Jaina and Jacen, which could actually tie really well into Splinters. We haven’t actually discussed writing it together, but then again those things just sort of happen; we weren’t sure which of us was going to write Loose Wires when we started talking through our ideas that story, and we ended up co-writing it.

We have outlined and started a Saga era AU short story called To Save a Life. It’s about Padmé and Vader and would actually tie into my Padmé flashbacks in EotP. Needless to say, times have been really tight and plot bunnies a plenty for both of us these days, so this one has taken a back seat for the time being. It’s a story that is near and dear to both our hearts, though, and it will get written. We just want to do it right. Or is it write?

Finally, I’m sure that the Jacen/Tahiri story meant to tie into Chandrila Surprise is out there. The story is more developed in Lex’s head than mine, but I think it would be fitting for the two of us to put the back story on that one, just as we did with The Courtship of Jagged Fel. I’ve been meaning to ask him…Oops! I guess he’s finding out with the rest of you.

9) What's with all these crazy people who have Wraith Squadron in their sig?

I dunno. What is with all these Wraith Squadron mentions in their sigs?

At one point in the posting of EotP, the thread became a wee bit too social. There was a lot of mayhem and madness, and the rabblerousers were dubbed Wraiths. People were having fun, but the mods were trying to keep stories from running to the top without true story-related posts. It was a fair concern, since the membership at TFN was growing. TwinSunsLead formed a Yahoo group offsite where people could enjoy the fun without bogging down the story thread. Thus the Cantina, home of the Wraiths, was born. Anyone is welcome in the Cantina, although we try to keep it fun and check the attitudes at the door.

I have to say that the Wraiths have been my sanity, my encouragement when I am tired of writing, and my dearest friends. I owe them a debt I can never repay.

10) Who is your favorite author?

I refuse to pick a favorite, but I will mention writers whom I aspire to match in ability and beauty of wordsmanship.

Profic. Allston, Stackpole, Denning, Traviss, Zahn. Don’t make me pick. Beyond Star Wars, there is Nicholas Sparks. He’s a mainstream pop writer, but there is a fluid ease to reading his stories I really admire.

Fanfic. Darth_Lex has always been a favorite, even before we were truly friends. I was so excited to be able to write with him because he has an impressive understanding of the Star Wars themes and a keen eye for tightening prose. Then there are others who have a mastery with words and whose ideas are worthy of the professionals, including YodaKenobi, Tahi, Jags_Scoundrel, oldjedinurse and jaynasolofel in Beyond. Yobi is a writing machine, but I must beg the ladies to please write more. Over at Saga, I have always been impressed by geo3, obi_ew and dianethx. And I’ve just started delving into Before stories. I’m in love with Princess_Arulmozhi’s writing.

11) Do you have any tips for your fellow writers on how to write epic-length fics?

Don’t do it.

But for those who are going to anyway because a plot bunny is gnawing on their pants leg, I offer this advice. Have a story in your head. Know where you want to go with it, and have a good idea of how you’re going to get there. Too often on the boards people start a story, then start another, then another, and finish none. I’ve only not finished one story, and it was a co-authored piece. We were both pressed in real life, and we’d lacked a solid idea of where we wanted to go with the story. I think that’s why it fizzled out. No matter, the sole purpose of that story was to practice killing Jag; it served that purpose well. It was a good lesson, though, on what is needed to bring a story to conclusion.

I think one of the reasons people stick with my epics is they know I’ll finish. Also my stories don’t ramble because I have a clear sense of where I want to end up. Or at least that’s my guess.

To that end, I suggest working with timelines and outlines. I don’t outline to the extent Lex does, but I do outline. Splinters, while a much shorter story, actually has a more intricate outline than HH because the interplay of flashback scenes is crucial to the story. Still, I have a clear idea of exactly how HH will end. Some scenes I have imagined for so long that they pop out in a matter of hours when I sit down to write.

12) Since you usually run these interviews, if you could interview any author, who would it be?

Aye! You had to ask. I think if I had to choose I’d pick YodaKenobi because he’s got solid ideas about the state of the EU and well-formed opinions on the characters of the EU. It makes him a great storyteller. Hopefully he’s reading and will say, Yes.

It was an honor to be interviewed. Thank you.
