So this month we had several requests for a hot, hot, hot author on the Beyond boards. Everyone give a warm welcome to aurrasingrules101 applause

So tell us how you got into Star Wars. Inquiring minds want to know.

The first time I saw Star Wars was the Twentieth Anniversary in theaters. I went with my older brother and cousin who had seen it the first time around, and from then on I was hooked. I remember the first time I found a Star Wars book in a store, it was so exciting. I was about ten, and it was The Last Command by Timothy Zahn. I’m sure everyone will agree with me when I say he’s a fantastic author, and he really brought the spirit of the movies alive on the page for me. The next summer I went to the bookstore every other day until I had read every Star Wars book in print that they carried.

In your bio, you have your “philosophy” on the four things in life that make everything better. Would you care to explain for others?

Sure!

1. Jesus Christ- He’s the most important person in my life. Without him I’m nothing, and there’s no problem too big (or too small) for his love to erase.
2. Chocolate- What better way to drown your sorrows than with a huge bag of Hershey Kisses? I’m sure most women would agree with me.
3. Shopping- Well, this may sound a little materialistic, but it really is therapeutic. If I have a rough day, a little jaunt through the Mall is sure to give me a pick-me-up, even if I don’t buy anything.
4. A good Star Wars book- Reading and writing, for me, is a way to lose yourself and your problems, to get rid of tension and stress. There’s nothing like a little J/J mush or a classic space battle to rejuvenate myself. I love to read and write because when you do that you can do or be anything you want, there are no limits on life.

How did you start your first fanfic?

Spontaneously. I found the Beyond the Saga boards and was so excited I wrote down the first thing that came into my head and posted it. It wasn’t very smart, and looking back I cringe because of the terrible technique and plot development.

But then I got the idea for Dubious Engagement. For a while I was reluctant to post it because I already had one running fic, and because I thought it was a crazy idea that no one would want to read. But it wore on me, and more and more ideas popped into my head, until I had no choice but to write it down.

I’ll probably go back and eventually redo my first story, the same plotline but better done, but that will be a while into the future.

Tell us a bit about your stories.

Hmm, okay, where to start.

Uh, The Meaning of Fate, my first attempt at a fanfic, is a J/J story that’s slightly AU and takes place after the DN trilogy. Basically Jaina and Jag haven’t see each other in years after a mysterious breakup. The galaxy is at war with a cult of Sith who have driven the Jedi underground. Jaina is scouting outside their hidden base when, lo and behold, she runs into none other than Jag and his not-very-bright fiancé. The fiancé ends up getting kidnapped in a Sith raid on the Jedi base, and Jag enlists Jaina’s help in helping him recover her.

Dubious Engagement, the far better of my J/J stories, is very AU. Leia is still the COS of the NR, and she and Han are the epitome of selfish parents. Jaina, Jacen, and Anakin have lived with Luke since the twins were six, and Jaina hadn’t even seen her parents in two years when the story opens.

The Chiss and the NR have been in a Cold War of sorts for the past several years, and Leia had finally managed to negotiate a peace treaty. The catch is, Jaina’s the bargaining chip. Since there’s no romantic entanglements involved in Chiss marriages, they proposed and arranged marriage between Jaina and the son of a Chiss syndic(Jag). Much angst, mush, and drama ensues.

I also have a short series of humorous vignettes running on the Saga boards about a string of murders involving Palpatine’s secretaries.

As for future incursions, I have a sequel to Dubious Engagement, and am in the process of writing a huge collaborative called Past Providence, Future Promise set several thousand years in the SW future. It’s going to be great, make sure and check it out!

From a reader I was passed along this question - I'm very interested why you made Han and especially Leia such bad and evil parents? Can you elaborate on what story this is in reference to? As well as explain this interesting turn for those two characters?

Leia and Han are the way they are in Dubious Engagement because when I first wrote it I didn’t intend for either of them to be major players. Jag and especially Jaina were the center of the story, and Han and Leia’s only function was to provide the central problem of the piece. But since then things have grown enormously, and I really like their characters as they fit into the story. It’s so much fun to write.

The idea itself came from a history class I took back in High School. My teacher had an odd fascination with the Biltmore House and the Vanderbilts, and for maybe a week taught us the family history. A granddaughter of the Commodore, Consuelo Vanderbilt, was forced to marry someone she didn’t love. I thought it was tragic and heartbreaking, and was a wonderful inspiration for the theme of the story.

Much the same thing happened to Marie Antoinette when I read about the French Revolution. Her marriage was also arranged, and even though she wasn’t the best of monarchs by a long shot it really made you pity her circumstance. Since I was so moved by both the stories I thought everyone else would be too.

As a writer known for her Jaina-centric stories, what do you think of her relationship with Mara?

I love it. Mara has been one of my favorite characters for as long as I can remember. I wanted her and Luke to be together from that first book I ever read, and Jaina is like her in many ways. A lot of her character, I think, was shaped by her apprenticeship to Mara. Jaina and Leia’s canon relationship is not nearly as severe as in my story, but I do think there is a distance between them. It seems like Mara filled some of the motherly/mentor gap in Jaina’s life that she didn’t get from Leia.

That distance between Jaina and Leia was elaborated on in Dubious Engagement, only without Mara’s influence. If Mara had been married to Luke when Jaina was younger I think Jaina never would have stood for the arranged marriage and would have been much more self-confident when first arriving on Csilla.

Dubious Engagement is your current WIP. Do you plan a sequel?

Oh yes. It’s in the works, and should begin only a few weeks after I finish Dubious Engagement (which is quickly coming to a close). It will take place around four years after the events at the end of DBE. The difficulties in this one will be on a smaller scale, meaning the galaxy itself is not grievously threatened, but will be much more dramatic. The characters will have to defeat a personal enemy, overcome each other and their internal conflicts, which run deep. At the moment I’ve decided to call it Lies About Love.

If yes, can you give the fans some hints of what is to come?

Spoilers? Hmm…

Basically every relationship so far will be explored and tested to the extreme. A lot of the main action will be on Coruscant and Chilla. Jaina, for most of the novel, will have sole responsibility over Hanna while trying to uncover a threat to her family, which makes maneuvering extremely difficult, frustrating, and dangerous.

Hanna will have a definite role in the sequel, as will Chak and Cem Fel. The line around Leia’s character that borders between despicable and misunderstood will become even fuzzier, and the conflict between herself and Jaina will reach its climax.

I will be posting the trailer to Lies About Love in the Add On thread in the Resource forum very soon, and you’ll get a better look at it then.

There seems to be the consensus on the boards that you love to torture your readers with cliffies. Is this impression true? What has been your best reaction to a cliffie?

I do love cliffies, it’s true, I admit it. Timing and spacing is key, and I take full advantage of my position as author.

Probably the best reaction I’ve gotten has been the post when Jaina tells Jag she loves him, and the one where Han dies. One of my more recent posts where Nen Yim dies also got a big reaction. I really think that the next one or two will take the cake, though…

Evil author lady. I think you and I could really get along...

So what keeps you writing?

Reader response, definitely. It’s very easy to get disheartened by an unenthusiastic audience, but fortunately my readers have been fabulous. The only problem has been they get a little too excited, and that has gotten us in trouble with the mods. I hate snuffing out their eagerness. It would be great if they had somewhere else to discuss.

What keeps you reading?

A good fast pace. I hate lulls where things aren’t interesting. I also like mush, and a little mystery is a good way to keep me hooked. Detail is a big thing with me, too. It’s the ornamentation, creative wording that changes a simple plot into a work of art. I like to get into a character’s head and wallow around a little, too. I want to feel them.

Who is your favorite profic author(s)? Your favorite fanfic author(s)? How have they influenced your writing?

Timothy Zhan is my favorite profic author by far. He’s so talented, his descriptions and wording and detail astound me. I love his characterizations, too. He writes L/M better than anyone, and I would read any Star Wars book he wrote. I also love Aaron Allston. His sense of humor is fantastic, and of course he was the one who brought J/J together. Michael Stackpole also has an amazing knack for battle sequences that I could never even dream of matching.

Ooh, fanfics, that’s a hard one, there are so many. Well, Rynne and RedGold write Luke and Mara better than anyone on the boards I’ve read so far. They have an amazing skill for their relationship. I also think you (TKL) are a fabulous author that should be writing profic. I read Echoes of the Past on fanfiction.net long before I ever found the TFN fanfiction boards. oldjedinurse has a talent for J/J and especially Jag that I doubt I’ll ever be able to equal, and as far as an amazing plot that has me gripping the edge of my seat, I love to read ZaraValinor’s work.

If you could have one Jaina/Jag author interviewed, who would it be?

Well, most of the J/J author’s I would pick have already been interviewed. Even though she doesn’t write them exclusively, ZaraValinor includes our favorite pairing in Evolution of the Night, and I would be extremely interested to read an interview from her.

So that wraps up this interview. Again, thanks to aurra for taking the time to share her thoughts with us applause

I'm the slacker in charge of challenges. I've had some great ideas submitted and have held off for a bit because having them too often seems to dull the interest. I will be opening one soon with the new excitement following the release of Betrayal.
