Welcome to the Jaina/Jag Index’s November Newsletter! For lack of a better idea, this month’s color scheme is American Thanksgiving, which is this month.

First on our update is some new stories.

Author: Inara
Title: The Fundamental Truth
Timeframe: Between TUF and TJK
Characters: Jaina Solo, Jag Fel
Genre: Angst
Keywords:
Summary: What happened between TUF and TJK to cause Jaina and Jag’s relationship to spiral from being lovers to being near strangers?
Notes: Complete

Author: TKeira_Lea
Title: GRANDPA WARS: THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK
Timeframe: post-Destiny’s Way AU
Characters: Han Solo, Soontir Fel, Keira Winter Fel, Jaina Solo, Syal Fel, Briaun Fel
Genre: Old-fashioned fun
Keywords: AU
Notes: Missing short story fit into the timeframe of Legacy
Summary: Han and Soontir battle for title of Supreme Grandpa.

Author: NYCitygurl
Title: The Nightmare Wedding
Timeframe: post-Dark Nest
Notes: Part of the Mod Challenge.
Challenger: Stormtrooper_TK421
Challenge: Write a story about Jaina and Jag getting married with Wes Janson as the minister, Corran Horn doing special music, and Wedge Antilles as the server of the food... Also, Zekk must paste a sign to Jag's back that says "I suck eggs!" and Kyp Durron must blow up the wedding cake with some super weapon...

Author: jedi_of_ennth
Title: Terms of Endearment
Timeframe: a few years after Dark Nest
Characters: Jaina, Jag, Zekk, Soontir
Genre: uh ... humorous melodrama, maybe?
Keywords: weddings, brothers, secrets
Summary: Jag discovers that Soontir has been keeping a secret …
Notes: Written for The “I Dare You” Challenge.

Author: aurrasingrules101
Title: The Meaning of Fate
Timeframe: 7-10 years after TUF
Characters: Jaina, Jag, and a little of others
Genre: Romance, action, angst
Summary: Jaina and Jag meet after many years of heartache, but both appear to have moved on. Do they still have feelings for each other??? Adventure and drama ensues. The Sith have risen in power again, and the Jedi are little more than fugitives.
Notes: this is slightly AU, but I guess you could make it fit with TJK. Not far removed from the canon universe.

Author: stickster
Title: Wedding Gifts
Timeframe: 2-3 years after "The Unifying Force"
Characters: Jaina, Kyp, Han, Anakin Solo, Jag
Genre: angst, romance
Keywords: J/J, slight K/J
Summary: On her wedding day, Jaina talks with some of the men in her life.
Notes: Can be read in between "Nothing Like the Moon" and "Shatter," or as a stand-alone.

Author: Draconarius
Title: Shattered Mirror
Genre: action
Timeframe: a little under a year after TUF
Characters: Jaina, Jag, Kyle Katarn, Danni, Anakin, Tahiri, Wynssa, Valin, Zekk, OCs
Summary: Jaina and Jag are hurled into an alternate universe where the Vong won the war.
Notes: WIP

Author: Trepidation
Title: Dropping a Shadow Bomb that Drools
Timeframe: Four years post-Yuuzhan Vong War
Characters: Jag/Jaina; Han, Leia, Jacen, Luke, Mara, Ben etc.
Genre: Romance, humor, and the usual dysfunctional Solo perspective
Keywords: Jag, Jaina, Kalla, Mercinna
Summary: Jaina and Jag visit the Solo’s and the Skywalkers in the Corporate Sector, on the planet of Kalla. They bring along a bit of a surprise. Disclaimer: Likely to make your teeth hurt and cause your skin to break out.
Notes: Series of Vignettes

Author: aurrasingrules101
Title: Dubious Engagement
Characters: Jaina, Jag, Luke, Jacen, Anakin(Solo), the Fel family, some OCs.
Genre: romance, angst
Time Period: pre-Vong war
Summary: The basic gist of this story is that Leia is still CoS of the NR. She makes a treaty with the Chiss, and part of it is that Jaina marries a young pilot by the name of Jag Fel. This is quite au. This is about what happens to Jaina as she has to leave her home and go marry a stranger.
Notes: I have absolutely nothing against Han and Leia. They are great characters, great parents, and this is no reflection on my opinion of their canon characteristics. This was influenced by the story of Marie Antoinette and Consuelo Vanderbilt, though it doesn't follow that storyline.

Author: Skywalker64089
Title: Shifting Space
Timeframe: After Dark Journey, while stationed at Borealis (at some point I may narrow it down)
Characters: Jaina, Jag, Honor Harrington, Misc. others Eventually, some OC's
Genre: Action, Drama, Crossover, Possibly a little angst, don't know yet
Keywords: Jaina, Jag, Honor Harrington
Summary: While stationed at Borealis, Jaina and Jag go on a scouting mission. After successfully completing the mission, they come under attack at Borealis and make a blind jump out of the system. Due to the circumstances that follow, they end up in Harrington's universe at the end of the Battle of Manticore (circa end of At All Costs)
Notes: This story will contain spoilers for At All Costs If you want to read the book, and have not, be aware that after chapter 2 or 3 you will be at risk. You have been warned.
This has been beta'd by the wonderful oldjedinurse.

As a not for submitting your stories, I’m not really sure that I’m supposed to be editing for spelling. I think as a rule it’s ‘what you see is what you get.’ However, I really hate the obvious mistakes, such as not capitalizing the names of characters in the summary, and have a tendency to fix them. To avoid having to do this, I ask you to please reread what you wrote and edit for spelling and capitalization before you send it in so that my computer doesn’t go nuts with the red underlines in Word. Thanks for your help. happy

We have winners for the October Challenge!!!

Third place is ‘Disillutioned’ by BigFatty

Congratulations to the winners, and good job to everyone who participated!!

This month’s author interview is with our own lovely BigFatty!!!

Why Star Wars?
My mom primed me to be a sci-fi fan by letting me watch Star Trek: The Next Generation with her when I was growing up. I didn’t find Star Wars until I was in seventh grade when my sister and I found the greatest tape ever known to man; the first half was a recording for A New Hope from when it was aired one night on TV in the 80s and the second half being Bill Cosby: Himself.
I was immediately drawn to Star Wars as soon as I experienced it for the first time. Sure it had the basic premise of good versus evil, but they were able to pull it off wonderfully. I was enamored with a place where a princess and a guy like him could fall in love; and being from Indiana, I was very excited about the idea that it took a backwater Farmboy to save the galaxy.
I couldn’t wait to see the rest of the trilogy and then I found out there were books that continued these amazing characters on their journeys—I was suckered in from then on.

Do you remember the first time you sat down and wrote a piece of fanfiction?
Since it was only five months ago, very much so. Well, let me correct that. The first time I attempted to write fanfic was when I was fifteen or sixteen. It was a story for West Wing about Josh and Donna telling their kids about how they met and fell in love. I never got past page two with it.
The first story I wrote and finished was done last May. I was walking home from lab and the song “Baby Girl” by Will Hoge started playing on my iPod. Immediately, I could just see Jaina growing up and how Han would feel about it. I then sat down and pulled up the lyrics and had the story—also named “Baby Girl”—finished in about an hour.
I honestly thought it would be my lone contribution to the fanfic world, but luckily I was wrong.

I see you're an artist too. Which do you like more – writing or creating art?
I enjoy both of them very much. They both let me be creative (something that I still don’t believe I am sometimes) and both have been received quite well by people on the boards, which is always nice. But if I had to pick one I would say art.
It is just easier on the brain to come home after a long day of trying to learn a new language (Hebrew in case you’re curious) and be lectured at about bacteria to sit down and color rather than attempting to invent an interesting plot. It is much more relaxing and the results seem to show themselves faster than with writing.

Care to share a bit of your J/J art?
I’d love to. The drawing is done by the wonderful FalconFan, and the original can be found in her thread or here in the Index in the fanart section. My contribution is adding color:

Now if only things like that would happen in profic…

What drew you to J/J? Was it Jaina? Or Jag? Or both?
Initially it was Jaina that drew me in. If you spread out reading the NJO series like I did, Jaina and I were the same age in the stories for about seven years. It was always awesome to let myself escape into her shoes where I could be cool enough to swing around a lightsaber and have Han and Leia as parents (not that there’s anything wrong with my parents, they’re cool too).
Then Jag came along, thank goodness. I could join in on the whole “Who’s right for Jaina?” debate here, but I won’t, I just honestly thing that Jaina and Jag are a meant-to-be couple. He complements her so well, and let’s face it—I’m a sucker for a hot guy in uniform with manners.
Add to the fact that it was one of the few bright spots in the NJO series and it spawned some amazing fanfic, I just haven’t been convinced that there is a better choice for Jaina out there.

Tell us a little about your post-NJO trilogy. Where does it take our lovebirds?
The first two stories in the trilogy are a look at what Jaina and Jag have been up to in the period of two years after TUF, where they went their different ways. They both come to the realization (with some help from others) that they should get their heads screwed securely on their shoulders and get back together. The third story tells of their reunion and their future together. By the time this is posted, it should be finished.
I am planning a sequel of sorts to the whole story in a format that I think is pretty original. It’s going to be a collection of viggies telling what happens after the trilogy because apparently I can’t leave this storyline alone.
And maybe I should stop calling it a trilogy…

I see you've branched outside of J/J recently and participated in some challenges. Which one of those entries was your favorite and why?
My favorite entry is “Of Harlots and Virgins” for the Quotation Roulette challenge. Originally I was going to write a story about how Luke had let the New Order stray in their beliefs in the Force, but then two other ideas came to mind. I let my lovely master, Austyn aka daughterofflame, pick which one to write and she selected Obi-Wan.
The challenge was to write a story revolving around a quote you were assigned, mine being “Every harlot was a virgin once." from William Blake. The story takes place ROTS and discusses Obi-Wan’s thoughts as he is on his way to Mustafar to duel Anakin.
The story was inspired by the image of Obi-Wan holding his head in hands in the hold he was hiding in on the way to Mustafar. Just that quick shot showed so much emotion and story that it was incredibly easy to compound on it and write this little piece.

Where do you get inspiration for your stories?
Hands down: music. Part of me views life as one huge soundtrack to a movie with songs to fit certain moods or events. I’ve written probably a hundred scenes in my mind from a few lyrics or the way a melody sounds. But most of the time, it’s just mental images of someone caressing the face of the person they love, a monster hug shared between friends who have been separated for a period of time, arguments between spouses, but nothing enough to write a whole fic, so they stay in my head. I’m pretty sure it’s obvious looking at my fics, all of which are inspired by a song (except the Quotation and “I Dare You” challenges), that music is a major way for me to write a story. It’s just so nice and easy because the story is halfway written for already by the lyrics of the song.

Another inspiration for me is to read other stories, usually ones that compliment the mood I’m about to write in. It just helps me to get into the characters’ heads a little more before I start writing.

Finally, what do you see in the future of J/J in the canon EU? Are you suffering from the dreaded DND (Dark Nest Depression) ?

Well, there are two answers to this question—what I want to see happen and what I think will actually happen.

I, like most of you reading you this, would love to see Jaina come to her senses and go to Jag asking for him to take her back. In fact, I’d love to see that this whole little trilogy end with someone, anyone, waking up and all of it being a bad dream or taking place in an alternate universe. Does this answer the question of whether or not I’m suffering from the dreaded Dark Nest Depression?
What I actually think will happen is they will make Jaina and Jag the Mara and Luke of their generation. The Powers That Be seem to care more about dragging things out so they can rake in more money rather than appeasing their fans, and I think it’s only a matter of time before they see that the fans disagree with that idea. I really hope it doesn’t take them forever to get Jaina and Jag together, but I don’t think that it will happen in this trilogy, and by the end of it Jag and Jaina will have been around each other for what a decade? Ugh.
I seriously hope Mr. Allston can pull this one out of the crapper, but there is only so much a man can do. Don’t get me wrong, I love Allston and his writing, but I’m just not sure if the overlords will let us have a decent storyline.

Thanks for entertaining our questions. A last one - For those just venturing into the fanfic realm what advice would you give them?
Don’t be scared. We were all newbies at one point, too. There are so many people around here that would love to help you in any way they can, all you have to do is ask, which I know can be the scariest part of it all. I’ll admit I’ve been terrified to post a story or start my art thread. I would sit there and wait for people to write comments like “you suck”, but it never happened. One reason is comments like that aren’t allowed, there’s one less reason for you to be scared. The second is, you are your harshest critic. I’ve found that the pieces of a story that I don’t like the best, or think are the weakest, or almost always the parts that my readers love the most. Go figure.
So, don’t be afraid and ask for help. Don’t get stuck in the lurker rut, come join us in the fun and madness.

Love the slogan! It deserved to win - I mean, a lot of important moments seem to happen for J/J behind closed doors!

Great interview, BF! Music inspires you, too, huh?

You may see yourself as fairly "new" to writing fanfic, but I think you've found your calling.

Almost forgot - more great fan art!!

The new stories in the index this month are just terrific. I urge everyone to read them all, if you haven't already!
