The Jedi
The Jedi are a fictional monastic peacekeeping organization from the Star Wars saga, known for their talent in the Force. The word 'Jedi' is said to have been adapted by George Lucas from 'jidaigeki' (Japanese for "period drama" movies about samurai).
Origins of the Order
The Jedi Knights were an order of individuals who had the ability to touch and work alongside the Force, shunning its dark side. The order began tens of thousands of years before the rise of the Galactic Empire. Many ancient and semi-legendary organizations have been proposed as the forerunners of the Jedi Order, such as the Order of Dai Bendu or the Chatos Academy, but no conclusive links have ever been shown. Likewise, the birth planet of the order is unknown. There are many candidates, including such known worlds as Coruscant, Ossus, Corellia, and Utapau, as well as mythic, lost planets such as Had Abbadon, and Ondos.
It is known, however, that the brightest and best philosophers, priests, and warriors came together on a single world long ago to discuss their discoveries involving the enigmatic, mystical Force, and that the concentration of these efforts eventually led to the development of the Jedi Order. —Star Wars Roleplaying Game: Power of the Jedi Sourcebook.
Initially the Jedi was a contemplative order. Over time, however, the order changed, and took a more direct and active role in galactic affairs, eventually centralizing themselves on Coruscant in the aftermath of the catastrophic Battle of Ruusan.
"For over a thousand generations, the Jedi Knights were the guardians of peace and justice in the Old Republic. Before the dark times. Before the Empire." — Obi-Wan Kenobi, Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope.
Becoming a Jedi required the most profound commitment and astute mind. The life of a Jedi was one of personal sacrifice. Those who showed an aptitude for the Force were taken at birth or soon after to train in the Jedi Temple on Coruscant, where the order was headquartered. From the outset of their training they lived a life of simplicity, adhering to the Jedi Code which forbade material possessions or emotional attachments. This training was initially done by a venerable, experienced Jedi until the individual was proficient enough to start the journey of a Jedi. When Luke Skywalker made his new Jedi Academy, he altered the Jedi ways and traditions, allowing emotional attachments, possessions, and more contact with family and friends.
In keeping with the tenets of modesty and humility, the Jedi traditionally wore comfortable long, flowing robes, a tunic, and a cloak, of which each generally varied in tones and shades of white and brown. The colors were in stark contrast to the antithetical Sith, who were draped primarily in black. Exceptions were sometimes made, most notably in the case of Anakin Skywalker, but the Jedi found their traditional methods were most successful and were loath to change.
The Jedi Code
The Jedi Code is the central philosophy and dogma of the Jedi Knights. The code has been appended over the millennia, and by the time of the Clone Wars it included many fairly esoteric prohibitions far removed from the core beliefs of a Jedi, such as a doctrine that training shall only begin in infancy and anybody older than that was too old to be trained. However, throughout all of these changes there was a central, core part of the code that remained the fundamental belief of a Jedi.
There is no emotion; there is peace.
There is no ignorance; there is knowledge.
There is no passion; there is serenity.
There is no chaos; there is harmony.
There is no death; there is the Force.
The code is based heavily on meditations on the Force by the Jedi Master Odan-Urr, a veteran of The Great Hyperspace War.
Knights of the Old Republic inserts the line: There is no chaos; there is harmony., implying that circa 4,000 BBY that was a fifth line of the Code.
Structure of the Order
There is a well-developed hierarchy of ranks, listed below.
Jedi ranks
Members of the order progressed through four tiers of rank, sometimes referred to as levels.
Youngling – an unofficial title, this refers to a child with Force potential. More accurately, Youngling is Galactic Basic slang for children of any sort. At a very young age, the Jedi initiates leave their homes and are assigned to a group for training. If a youngling is not chosen by any Jedi Knight to be their Padawan by 13 years of age, the youngling is placed into another, lesser role in the Jedi Service Corps. Depending on where the student's talents lie, this may be the Agricultural Corps, the Medical Corps, or the Exploration Corps.
Jedi Padawan – an apprentice who undergoes intensive training under a Jedi Knight
after graduating from the academy. A Jedi may have only one apprentice at a time, and is required to promote the current apprentice before taking another. Master Yoda was seen training several younglings in Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones, but they were receiving generic Jedi teachings from him rather than being trained as Padawans.
Jedi Knight– a disciplined Padawan may become a fully trained Jedi once they have
completed "the trials." This is the most common rank of Jedi, hence, the title is also used, mostly by non-Jedi, to refer to any member of the order that has at least passed the compulsory tests required by the Jedi Council.
Jedi Master – a Jedi Knight may become a Master after showing great understanding of
the Force and usually subsequent to training a Padawan to Knighthood. Election to the Jedi Council, the upper echelon of the Order, therefore, automatically endows this title upon a Jedi (Anakin was made part of the Council by Palpatine, but not given the rank of Master because he was not elected). The rank can also be achieved through the performance of extraordinary deeds or self-proclamation, though the latter is extremely rare.
A scene from Return of the Jedi with Sebastian Shaw as the Jedi Spirit of Anakin Skywalker, along with the Jedi Spirits of Yoda and Obi-Wan Kenobi, all looking proudly on Luke Skywalker.
Jedi Spirit – a Jedi Knight or Jedi Master with admirably powerful connection to The
Force, few ever gain this rank. While the Jedi Spirit was first seen in Star Wars: Episode V - The Empire Strikes Back when Obi-Wan Kenobi appeared to Luke Skywalker, it was also mastered by Jedi Master Yoda, Anakin Skywalker, and The Dark Woman. The Jedi Spirit is a Force User now one with The Force, and the final rank that can be achieved by a Jedi.
Jedi Types
(It should be noted that this is mainly from the Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic computer game and the d20-style Star Wars role playing games. The role playing game makes it clear that within the Star Wars universe these differences don't exist and they are merely a way to describe the various styles of Jedi that are depicted, i.e. some are more martially-oriented while others are more knowledge-oriented. Jedi do not refer to themselves as "Consulars" or "Guardians", but simply as 'Jedi'.)
There are three types of Jedi: the guardian, the sentinel, and the consular. Selection of a Jedi's type takes place at the transition to Padawan. It must be noted however that the role of a Jedi was chosen by their beliefs, capabilities, aptitudes, and what role they wished to play in the universe.
Guardians
focus on martial training and combat. They usually engage in combat more than any other Jedi class. Like all Jedi, they are keepers of the peace, acting as a kind of special police force for the Republic. Notable guardians include Obi-Wan Kenobi, Mace Windu, Anakin Skywalker, and, in the Expanded Universe, Kyle Katarn would have been considered one. Guardians are loosely signified by blue lightsabers (Windu was an exception with his purple lightsaber).
Consulars
possess great knowledge of the Force but rarely enter combat. Consulars are the primary scholars and diplomats of the Order, often becoming instructors. The most famous of these are Yoda, Qui-Gon Jinn and Luke Skywalker. Following her training, Leia Organa Solo also became a consular. Consulars are loosely signified by green lightsabers (there has been debate about Skywalker's type. Although he had a blue lightsaber and was trained by Obi-Wan, who was a guardian, Luke got more training from Yoda, which is probably what made him a Consular. Furthermore, the blue lightsaber he originally used was his father's, not his).
Sentinels
strike a balance between the first two types, as they possess admirable combat skills with some extensive knowledge of the Force. These are often dispatched to regions across the galaxy to work as ambassadors and investigators of unusual concentrations of the Force. Bastila Shan and Visas Marr are examples of this type. Atton Rand can be trained as a Sentinel with enough influence. Sentinels are loosely signified by yellow lightsabers. This type does not exist in the role playing game, and was created for the Knights of the Old Republic video game; no movie or Expanded Universe character outside of this game is known to be a Sentinel.
In addition to the three basic Jedi types, some Jedi with special talents at helping others choose to specialize as Healers. Healers use the Force in conjunction with medical and psychiatric training to help allieviate illness, pain, and suffering wherever they encounter it. They are sometimes assigned to med-centers or mobile medical units on various worlds. Barriss Offee is an example of a healer who worked in a Republic Mobile Surgery Unit during the latter part of the Clone Wars. Cilghal, a Calamarian who was discovered by Leia Organa, was the first Healer of the New Jedi Order. Others specialize as Investigators, who act as the eyes and ears of the Council. This can be translated as "rogues" of other role-play games.
Also during the time of the Old Republic there were watchmen, a title that was given to a Jedi Master that connoted his or her role as overseer of a particular star system or segment of the galaxy. This was arranged through a loose agreement with the Old Republic. The watchman's main charge was to maintain harmony and justice. The Republic granted watchmen the authority to operate autonomously in order to right wrongs and deal with disturbances in the Force that occurred outside the purview of local laws. Ki-Adi-Mundi was an example of a Jedi Watchman, which is the Star Wars equivalent of a "Sherriff".
Ok everyone that was all from one site.
I can add more and mught later on i'm not
Sure yet.
The Grey Jedi:
(See the Lost Twenty.)
Jedi who have left the Jedi Order or have been cast out of it may be referred to as Gray Jedi. Gray Jedi have not turned to the Dark Side, rather they use both light and dark side powers and view the Force as two pieces of a whole. Gray Jedi are not subject to follow the Jedi High Council and use Dark Side powers with great discretion. In the Knights of the Old Republic, Jolee Bindo might have been considered a Gray Jedi, having left the Jedi Order, as well as the Jedi Exile in Knights of the Old Republic II: The Sith Lords. Despite her origins, others may argue that Kreia could be considered among the Gray Jedi. Not all Gray Jedi are necessarily evil or self-serving mercenaries, as they might still keep the honor of the Jedi at their own wish, like Kyle Katarn of Jedi Knight II: Jedi Outcast. They are just not complacent members of the Jedi any more, whatever the reason for exile. They are also refered to as Shadow Jedi, believing that the ends justify the means. According to the Jedi Council the so called "grey jedi" are considered "fallen" or "tainted". Up until the New Jedi order, the Order belived that there was only a light, and a dark. No grey spots in between.
A note I wouls like to point out the Gray Jedi Are NO! nurtaul!
Dark Jedi:
Dark Jedi is the somewhat misleading name given in the Star Wars fictional universe to those beings who are Force-attuned and adept at the dark side of the Force.
Qualifications
Dark Jedi are not to be confused with Sith; that is, the Sith Order has its own codes and secrets, which are not known to any non-member, even those who join the dark side of the Force. Dark Jedi usually refers to former Jedi who has fallen to the dark side. The first Dark Jedi, led by Xendor, were the predecessors of the Sith.
Because the term Sith was never heard from the dialogues in the original trilogy, early Expanded Universe products usually considered the "evil Jedi," those who joined the dark side of the Force, as "Dark Jedi." In his famous novel series The Thrawn Trilogy, author Timothy Zahn labeled Sith Lord Darth Vader and Emperor Palpatine as Dark Jedi, and the term "Sith" was never mentioned in the series.
Common usage
Dark Jedi use the Force for their own ends while attempting to utilize other powers of the Force, owing no allegiance. Strength and abilities are unrounded and often unhoned, e.g. while a Dark Jedi can use Jedi and Sith Force arts, only a true Jedi or Sith can master the nuances. True Sith and Jedi must be ordained and approved by their respective masters in order to gain access to the true powers of their respective organizations.
The term is a convenient shorthand description for such beings who can manipulate the Force. But it is nevertheless a misleading designation for the reason that many, if not most, Dark Jedi have never actually been members of the Jedi Order (especially after the Great Jedi Purge, in which case it would be impossible). Emperor Palpatine trained many Force-sensitive beings in the ways of the dark side of the Force, but most were never inititated into the rites and secrets of the Sith. Force-sensitive individuals seem to arise spontaneously and may definitely become adept at the Force without Jedi or Sith involvement. It is true, however, that many notable Dark Jedi have received at least some Jedi training.
Palpatine did not consider himself completely bound by Sith tradition (he had begun training his first apprentice, Darth Maul, prior to the death of his own Master, Darth Plagueis, which was a major violation of Darth Bane's Rule of Two), and it was believed by some (including his second apprentice, Darth Tyranus) that he planned to eventually do away with the Rule of Two entirely in order to have legions of Sith at his disposal. The legions of Dark Jedi who served the Galactic Empire (including the Emperor's Hands, the Emperor's Royal Guard, the Emperor's Secret Order, the Imperial Inquisitorius, and other various Dark Side Adepts) seem to support this theory.
It is also worthy of note that, though a Dark Jedi may believe him- or herself to be acting for a "greater good," the dark side of the Force is a path that proves ultimately self-destructive (as was the case when Ulic Qel-Droma, Revan, and Luke Skywalker fell to the dark side), regardless of the motives or misguided morals of those who walk it. Mara Jade is another primary example of a Dark Jedi who served evil (in this case, Emperor Palpatine) but still mistakenly believed her actions to be just. Eventually, she turned from the dark side, but still carried the teachings of the Emperor with her, such as her lightsaber techniques. Contrary to the Jedi method of purging emotion and gaining power via meditation and practice, Dark Jedi, like Sith, allow their emotions to empower them.
Some of the more notable Dark Jedi (besides the Sith Lords) include Asajj Ventress, Joruus C'Baoth, and Mara Jade.
Palpatine's Dark Side Elite
Following the death of Emperor Palpatine at the Battle of Endor and his subsequent resurrection in a clone body six years later, a new organization of Imperial Dark Jedi appeared. A cadre of seven darksiders (who were in actuality little more than an extension of the Emperor's will) did most of Palpatine's bidding during this time. These seven Dark Jedi were known as the Dark Side Elite. Two of their number were killed and replaced during the early events of the reborn Palpatine's Operation Shadow Hand. These nine included Sedriss, Vill Goir, Zasm Katth, Baddon Fass, Krdys Mordi, Kvag Gthull, Tedryn-Sha, Xecr Nist, and Kam Solusar. All were eventually killed or captured, with the exception of Solusar, who was redeemed by Luke Skywalker and became an integral member of the New Jedi Order.
Thats all on the Dark Jedi.
The Sith:
In the fictional Star Wars universe, the Sith were a humanoid race enslaved by a group of warrior priests who follow the dark side of the Force and serve as the evil counterparts to the Jedi. Their leaders are known as "Sith Lords," and the most powerful as "Dark Lord of the Sith." Many members are fallen Jedi who join the dark side. Sith Lords often adopt names that are preceded by "Darth."
"Always two there are—no more, no less: a Master, and an apprentice." — Yoda
The Sith Code
Peace is a lie, there is only passion.
Through passion, I gain strength.
Through strength, I gain power.
Through power, I gain victory.
Through victory, my chains are broken.
The Force shall free me.
The Great Schism
According to Star Wars Expanded Universe fiction, the Sith Order, or cult, was first established when dissident Jedi discovered that "true" power was achieved not through pensive meditation, as taught by their Jedi Masters, but through emotion. The tension between the Jedi and these dissident Dark Jedi, led by Xendor, the first Dark Jedi, grew until conflict erupted, thousands of years before the Battle of Yavin. This conflict, called the Great Schism, led to the Dark Jedi being banished by the Old Republic. These outcasts found a new home on the distant planet of Korriban, a desolate world inhabited by the relatively primitive Sith people. However, the Force flowed strongly with these Sith, allowing them to create their own brand of black magic. The Dark Jedi saw this as an opportunity to gain additional power. Using their training in the Force, the Dark Jedi amazed the Sith and elevated themselves to god-like status on Korriban, becoming the rulers of the Sith people. As years passed, and interbreeding occurred between the Dark Jedi and the Sith, the term "Sith" came to mean not the original insect-like inhabitants of Korriban, but their Dark Jedi masters as well. It is from this rise to power and integration into Sith culture that the term Dark Lord of the Sith was first conceived as a title bestowed upon the leader of the Sith Empire by a council of lesser Sith Lords. Sometime during the early history of the First Sith Empire, the coming of the Sith'ari, the prophesied savior of the Sith Order, was foretold. The Sith'ari was a perfect being who would rise to power and bring balance to the Force. According to prophecy, the Sith'ari would rise up and destroy the Sith, but in the process would return to lead the Sith and make them stronger than ever before, a striking parallel to the Chosen One of Jedi legend, though it is most likely that the Sith'ari and Chosen One are one and the same.
The Fall of the Sith Empire and the Freedon Nadd Uprising
In 5,000 BBY, the Republic rediscovered the Sith and the Great Hyperspace War began. Though it ended with Dark Lord of the Sith Naga Sadow in suspended animation on Yavin 4 and his great war fleets destroyed, the Sith Empire survived. It was believed to have collapsed shortly afterward due to infighting and attacks by the Old Republic, but it was later discovered that the Sith Empire had retreated into the Unknown Regions, where the Lords of the Sith waited patiently for over a millennium for the right moment to return.
Centuries later, a Jedi Knight named Freedon Nadd fell to the dark side. On Yavin 4, he awakened former Dark Lord Naga Sadow, who trained him in the ways of the Sith. Though Sadow's definite fate is not known, it is believed he perished and his spirit was destroyed at his pupil's hand. Freedon Nadd used his newfound powers to conquer the Onderon system. But Freedon Nadd's extraordinary reign of power eventually came to a close. His death echoed a great power vacuum all throughout the galaxy. His dark gloomy tomb, constructed on Dxun and greatly tainted by the darkside would remain an outpost for Sith knights for many years to come.
Sith teachings would bring constant civil war throughout their civilization, however, as the primal instinct of their teachings was based upon the principle that they must continually prove their strength against each other. Rumors have it that the true Sith Empire still watched and waited on the outer rim of the galaxy.
The Great Sith War
Four hundred years after Nadd's death, the Jedi Exar Kun sought out his tomb, a place strong in the dark side. Nadd's spirit materialized and corrupted Kun, but was eventually destroyed by his student. Exar Kun was pronounced the new Dark Lord of the Sith by the ghost of the ancient Dark Lord Marka Ragnos. As his first apprentice he took another fallen Jedi, Ulic Qel-Droma, and the Great Sith War began. Although several more Jedi turned to the dark side and many more were killed, Exar Kun was finally defeated when Ulic realized the error of his ways and led the Old Republic's forces to Kun's stronghold on Yavin 4. Using the drained life energies of his Massassi warriors, Kun shed his physical body and imprisoned his spirit within the walls of Yavin 4's Massassi temples. His ghost, driven half-mad by millennia of isolation, was destroyed by a group of Luke Skywalker's students thousands of years later. Most of what remained of his Sith Brotherhood by the end of the Great Sith War was hunted down by the Old Republic in a purge known as "the Cleansing of the Nine Houses".
The War of the Star Forge
Less than four decades later, the Jedi Revan and Malak, heroes of the Mandalorian War (a bloody conflict allegedly instigated by the remnants of the ancient Sith Empire in the Unknown Regions), fell to the dark side and founded the Second Sith Empire. Using the ancient Rakatan Star Forge factory, they built a massive war fleet and began attacking the Old Republic. Thus began the second Sith War, later called the Jedi Civil War (and, still later, the War of the Star Forge), a conflict that proved even more devastating than Kun's war as more Jedi fell to the dark side, were killed in battle, or were murdered by Sith assassins. Revan was the greatest military genius the Jedi had ever seen. It was through his cunning alone that the Mandalorian Wars had been won, as the Old Republic soon discovered. During the Mandalorian Wars, Revan and Malak had rediscovered the long-lost ancient Sith Empire in the Unknown Regions, and were therefore careful to preserve the Republic's shipyards to use against this forgotten threat once they had conquered the galaxy. Due to an attempted coup by Malak, however, Revan's mind was destroyed and Revan, captured by the Jedi, was re-trained in their ways. Taking up the mantle of Dark Lord, Malak redoubled his empire's offenses against the Old Republic, no longer caring about preserving his enemy's resources. Following a long and arduous quest for the five Star Maps that would lead him to the Sith's stronghold, the new Revan led a frontal assault on the Star Forge. He battled his way through the Forge's droid army and legions of Sith and Dark Jedi. After redeeming Malak's apprentice, Bastila Shan, he slew Malak himself in a final confrontation between the old friends, allowing the Old Republic to destroy the Star Forge and win the day.
Despite this great victory won for the Old Republic by Revan, the galaxy soon grew even darker. Barely a hundred Jedi remained after the Jedi Civil War, and those who did soon found their ranks thinning at an alarming rate. Everywhere Jedi congregated, they were murdered, struck down by an invisible enemy who, incredibly enough, was somehow attacking them through the Force itself. Darth Nihilus, the Lord of Hunger, and Darth Sion, Lord of Pain, were students of Revan's former Jedi Master, Kreia (now a Sith called Darth Traya, Lady of Betrayal), had begun a shadow war against the surviving Jedi. Despite their incredible powers, they did not believe themselves strong enough to defeat the Jedi in the same kind of open warfare employed by Revan and Malak. (Revan himself had disappeared into the Unknown Regions a year after the destruction of the Star Forge, hoping to put an end to the ever-present threat posed by the ancient Sith, and had not been heard from since.)
Five years after Malak's defeat on the Star Forge, a Jedi exile who had served Revan as a general during the Mandalorian Wars returned from the Outer Rim to find the Jedi Order virtually extinct. Thought to be the last of the Jedi by Nihilus and Sion, the exile was hunted mercilessly by Sith Assassins from planet to planet as the "last of the Jedi" tracked down the surviving members of the Jedi Council. In the end, several of these Jedi were killed, but the exile managed to turn the tide against the insidious "shadow Sith," slaying Nihilus, Sion, and Traya in battle, thereby ending their Jedi purge and giving the Jedi Order a chance to rebuild.
In modern history texts, the Great Sith War, the Cleansing of the Nine Houses, the Mandalorian Wars, and the War of the Star Forge are often grouped together under the collective appellation of "the Old Sith Wars."
The Sith'ari
Around the time of the Jedi Civil War, the coming of the Sith'ari, an ancient Sith prophecy, became somewhat well known in Darth Revan's Sith Empire. The Sith'ari was said to be a perfect being who would rise to power and bring balance to the Force. According to prophecy, the Sith'ari would rise up and destroy the Sith, but in the process would return to lead the Sith and make them stronger than ever before. It is believed that the prophecy of the Sith Sith'ari and the prophecies of the Jedi Chosen One refer to the same individual; namely Anakin Skywalker/Darth Vader, who made the Sith stronger than ever by wiping out the Jedi Knights and assisting Darth Sidious in his rise to power, but then destroyed the Sith when he betrayed and killed Sidious, thus fulfilling the ancient prophecy of the Sith'ari.
The New Sith Wars
Slowly, over the next thousand years, the Jedi Order rebuilt itself back to its former strength. Then, some 2,000 years before the Battle of Yavin, yet another Jedi, chafing under the restrictions of the Jedi Council, fell to the dark side, stole a Sith Holocron, renamed himself "Darth Ruin," formed a new Sith Order, and began recruiting others to his cause. This spawned a new series of conflicts, called the New Sith Wars, which lasted for a millennium.
However, the Sith very nearly proved to be their own undoing. Hungry for power, they turned on each other, all but destroying their order. The survivors reformed under the leadership of Lord Kaan, calling themselves "the Brotherhood of Darkness". To appease his disheartened minions, Kaan abandoned the millennia-old tradition of one ruling Dark Lord and granted the title to a good number of his followers, though very few of them were deserving of it.
The final conflict of the New Sith Wars, the War of Light and Dark or the Light and Darkness War (sometimes also referred to, as Exar Kun's war had been, as the Great Sith War), came to a head in the titanic seventh Battle of Ruusan, in which the Jedi Lord Hoth and the Army of Light clashed with Lord Kaan and the Brotherhood of Darkness for the last time. In the end, a deranged Kaan activated a thought bomb, an ancient Sith technique that sapped the life energy of all Force-sensitives in the vicinity. Both armies were all but destroyed, and only one Sith Lord survived: Darth Bane.
To guard against the Sith self-destructing or losing sight of their "ideals" again, Bane took only one apprentice, starting a one-master-one-apprentice tradition to prevent the Sith from destroying themselves again. He also restarted the tradition of passing the name "Darth" to each of his successors, a trend which appears to have originated with Darth Revan millennia before. In a nod to Kaan's earlier pronouncement, both master and apprentice in Bane's Sith Order held the title "Dark Lord of the Sith," making them, nominally at least, equals. The new tenets of this sinister order would be cunning, stealth, and subterfuge.
The Revenge of the Sith
Spoiler warning: Plot or ending details follow.
Bane's reformed Sith Order went into hiding, though they were soon discovered by the Jedi and believed to be destroyed. They survived, of course, but would not resurface for almost one thousand years, with the depredations of Darth Sidious and Darth Maul that began shortly before the Battle of Naboo.
Though Darth Maul was slain in that battle at the hands of Jedi Knight Obi-Wan Kenobi, the day proved an unparalleled victory for the Sith; Darth Sidious, generally known to the public as Senator Palpatine of Naboo, was elected to the office of Chancellor of the Galactic Republic.
More than a decade passed, during which Palpatine manipulated the Senate into granting him more and more power. His new apprentice, former Jedi Master Count Dooku (renamed Darth Tyranus in the Sith tradition), formed the Confederacy of Independent Systems (CIS), which seceded from the Galactic Republic, beginning a long and bloody conflict known as the Clone Wars.
During the Clone Wars, many Jedi lost their lives at the hands of the CIS and its Kaleesh cyborg commanding military leader, General Grievous. The Clone Wars eventually stretched to Coruscant, where the cunning general captured Supreme Chancellor Palpatine. A great battle erupted above the planet-city. In that battle, Count Dooku was brutally executed by Anakin Skywalker, goaded on by Palpatine.
The Chancellor then started to use his "emergency" powers to control the Jedi Order. This caused suspicion among the Jedi of Palpatine's motives. They believed that Darth Sidious was a part of Palpatine's inner circle and was controlling him. Using Anakin as a spy, Palpatine appointed Anakin to the Jedi Council, and convinced him that the Jedi were trying to take over the Republic.
It was also during this time that Anakin began to be plagued with visions of the death of his pregnant wife, Senator Padmé Amidala, in childbirth. Haunted by the murder of his mother three years earlier by Tusken Raiders on Tatooine, Anakin had been determined to find a way to prevent death using the Force.
Eventually Palpatine revealed to Anakin that he was, in fact, Sidious. In doing so, he offered him the secret he had been looking for (claiming it had been discovered by his former master, Darth Plagueis[1]), so long as he joined him as his new apprentice. Instead, Anakin went to the Jedi Council and told Jedi Master Mace Windu of Palpatine's true identity. Windu, along with the Jedi Agen Kolar, Saesee Tiin, and Kit Fisto, moved to arrest the Chancellor. However, Sidious quickly cut down the latter three and was battling with Windu when Anakin arrived. Skywalker demanded that Palpatine be arrested and stand trial, but the Jedi master argued that Sidious was far too dangerous to be allowed to live any longer. As Windu moved to kill the Sith Lord, Anakin turned on his ally, allowing Palpatine to strike him down.
Skywalker became Sidious's new apprentice as Darth Vader, and instructed to dispose of all the Jedi in the Jedi Temple, including children. Most surviving Jedi not present at the temple were disposed of by "Order 66," which instructed all clone troopers to execute their Jedi commanders. Very few Jedi survived this treachery, the most notable among them Yoda and Obi-Wan.
When it was over, the Jedi ranks had been thinned considerably. At last, the moment had come for the Sith to reclaim their former glory. Sidious/Palpatine replaced the ancient Republic with the Empire, an oppressive, galaxy-spanning dark-side dictatorship the likes of which had not been seen for a millennium.
The Great Jedi Purge continued, led by Vader and other Force-sensitive minions of the Emperor (including groups known as the Inquisitorius, the Emperor's Hands, and the Prophets of the Dark Side), until only a handful of Jedi were left alive. It was a dark time for the galaxy, in which the Force became thought of throughout the Empire (except in the cases of Vader, Palpatine, and their Dark Jedi minions, of course) as an arcane philosophy, almost like a fairy tale.
The Fall of the Galactic Empire
Eventually, however, the Rebel Alliance arose to threaten the Empire's unchallenged sovereignty. The Galactic Civil War drew many into its fold, perhaps the most notable of whom was Luke Skywalker, the son of Anakin. Shortly after Luke destroyed the Empire's terrifying Death Star superweapon, the Emperor and Vader became aware of the young man's identity. Both Sith Lords hoped to corrupt Luke to the dark side, but each had a different motive. Vader desired to kill the Emperor and rule the galaxy with his son, but Palpatine wished to replace Vader with the boy. During the Battle of Endor, Skywalker refused to join the Emperor, who then began torturing him with Force lightning. His son's suffering and pleas for help finally freed Anakin Skywalker from the Emperor's grip, and he threw his master down the Death Star's reactor shaft, in the process subjecting himself to the full force of the Emperor's lightning. Luke escaped with his father's body shortly before the new Death Star was destroyed, marking the end of the Emperor's Reign, until his clones appeared.
Well thats all on the Sith. Now to the Shadow Jedi.
The Shadow Jedi:
The Force is traditionally broken down into two unique aspects Dark and Light. Yet the question is often asked, "is the Force really so polarised?". If the Dark and Light sides of the Force are like two sides of one coin then there would be no confusion. However the Force is an energy field, and such cannot be classified in this way. The force in essence is pure energy neither good nor evil, these are sentient concepts and are injected into the force by conduits or wielders of the Force. Therefore we should not consider the Force as Light and Dark sides, for the Force cannot be classified into such opposing categories.
If the Force is not black and white, what is in-between?
The Shadow Side; Force users on the edge of Dark and Light, using them in harmony and achieving a balance such that they follow neither side fanatically. Moreover Shadow Side Force users adapt their Force ability to the situation they are in. A Shadow user will not use the Light side when what is called for is the Dark. Most Dark Side users give themselves completely to the Darkside and use their abilities only to commit evil acts of hate, anger, aggression and fear. Whereas a Light Side user only uses the Force for good such as defence and knowledge.
Is the Shadow Side a healthy balance?
"A student must find balance within their own hearts, whether they follow the Light or Dark paths is not something we can dictate."
Force Master
This is a decision only the Force User themselves can make, on there own.
Note this next peace of info is before KOTOR.
this was the name of a secretive band of Jedi Knights who devoted much of their time to gathering information on the users of the Dark Side of the Force, including the Sith. The Shadows were first formed millennia before the Great Sith War, and were often charged with infiltrating Sith territory in order to gather information.
After that the shadows changed they kinda died out after that.
The shadow Jedi or the shadows as others call. Are the
TRUE NATURAL FORCE USER!
They can use light and dark powers they do not see good and evil they only see people. They fight for blance of the Force. They are also assassins well its what can do to make credits anyway they train in
Assassin arts. The use light daggers and they have a lightsaber as well. But they useul fight with there daggers. If a death of Sith well hurt the blance of the Force they well stop it. The Shadow Jedi well NOT make an order at all! They are nurtual and well fight for both sides but, they olny want to Force to stay in blance.
Ok guys well thats alot of info I well out more on here as time gose on.
IF ANYONE! I mean Anyone has questions about the Shadow Jedi PM me ASAP!
I hope everyone reads this.
This is my gift to everyone
I hope it helps.
Just one more thing
I DO NOT WANT TO SEE A SHADOW JEDI ORDER!
Happy reading everyone.

Hey, KILIK, what about after the NJO series and the Jedi start believing there is no dark and light sides to the Force. Would that seem to be shadow Jedi behaviour?

RE: The Light the dark the Gray the Sith and the Shadow Jedi.
I would also like to add that there are higher classes of Jedi and Sith for those dedicated to studying the higher mysteries of the Force.
The Jedi
Weapon Master
The combat skills of a Weapon Master are unparalleled. They master some of the most difficult lightsaber forms and even can excel at wielding a lightsaber in each hand. Weapon Masters have a higher threshhold of pain.
Mace Windu is an example of a Weapon Master.
Jedi Watchman
This was already covered. Jedi Watchmen are well rounded and could be considered the jack of all trades for the Jedi Order.
Jedi Master
Not to be confused with the rank, this class is more interested in studying the higher mysteries of the Force and teaching others. They are considered wise and incredibly influential.
Yoda is an example of a Jedi Master.
The Sith
Sith Marauder
Sith Marauders rely heavily on their combat skills to overwhelm an opponent. Much like the Weapon Master, the Marauder has a high threshhold of pain and their combat skills are unparalleled.
Darth Vader is an example of a Sith Marauder.
Sith Assassin
Sith Assassins are incredibly resourceful, relying on stealth, speed and their well rounded skills to accomplish a mission.
Darth Sion was a Sith Assassin.
Sith Lord
Not to be confused with the blanket term Sith Lord, this class is the heart of the darkness. Sith Lords are very wise and can use powers of persuasion and manipulation to corrupt individuals.
Darth Sidious is an example of a Sith Lord.
I hope you don't mind me adding this info, Kilik.

RE: The Light the dark the Gray the Sith and the Shadow Jedi.
UPDATE OH THE JEDI.
Jedi Dress
Traditional Jedi robes.
UPDATE 2 THE JED.
The New Jedi Order
The New Jedi Order grew slowly but steadily. Some Jedi from the first class Luke taught - such as Kyp Durron - became Jedi Masters. The order eventually became large enough that Luke Skywalker considered reinstating the Jedi Council. However, an extragalactic Force-dead alien species, the Yuuzhan Vong, invaded the galaxy. The war had lasted 5 years, and the results were severe. An estimated 365 trillion sentients had perished in the invasion. Many Jedi fell while fighting this new threat, but the order did survive the war and continued to grow in strength. One of the Jedi casualties of this war was Anakin Solo, the youngest son of Han Solo and Leia Organa Solo, and Luke's nephew. Before his death, it was widely felt that Anakin would eventually become one of the greatest Jedi of his generation, and that he would eventually take Luke's place. Since Anakin's death, it has been assumed that Luke Skywalker's son, Ben Skywalker, has the most force potential of any living being.
After the war with the Yuuzhan Vong was over, Luke realized that the order would have to further adapt in order to survive. His experiences had led him to believe that the Force was not rigidly divided into a light and a dark side. Strong emotions, including anger, were not intrinsically evil - instead it was the intentions of the Force user that mattered the most. Luke came to believe that nearly everyone, regardless of their heritage, had some ability to touch and use the Force. He also felt that individual Jedi (and other Force users) would need to discover their own paths: that some could be called to contemplative life, while others would feel a need to take a more active role in galactic affairs, like the old-style Jedi. Because the Jedi had no single goal, he felt the Jedi Order as a whole should remain carefully aloof of its allegiance to the Galactic Alliance or any succeeding government.
Interestingly, many of Luke's realizations would have been considered heresy during the time of the original Jedi Order.
I hope that answer any questions anyone may have.
