Thanks so much to Knight-Dilettante for running this thread for so long!!

If you have author suggestions or would like to be an interviewer, please PM the sock or NYCitygurl.

Below is a list of authors whose interviews have been completed and are just waiting to be put up, a list of authors who have been interviewed in this thread, and a list of authors who have been interested in previous threads. Please check these lists before you send in suggestions. All new suggestions will be given top priority over authors who I've picked out.

When you suggest an author, please let me know if you're willing to do the interview or would prefer that someone else do it. If you want to sign up to just interview whoever you're assigned to, please do so!!

~*~*~*~

First off, we all owe a debt of gratitude to solojones for running Version 3.0 of the Author Interview thread. Let's give her a standing ovation for all that hard work. applause

And now, on to version 4.0 of the thread. Our first interview is now up. Please do continue to PM in any suggestions for authors to interview and/or offers to conduct interviews. If you suggest authors for interviewing, please let me know if you'd be willing to do the interview yourself or not. No pressure either way, I'd just like to know. Anyone who'd like to volunteer to conduct interviews is welcome, let me know if you're volunteering for a specific author's interview or in general and whether you'd be willing to do one, two or ten, etc. And if there are any suggestions in general for ideas in the interviewing authors area please suggest them by PM to this sock.

And finally, here is the list of already interviewed authors in one thread or another (please check here before suggesting an author to be interviewed) with links to their interview (further gratitude is due from me to solojones since I stole every listing for the previous threads from the first post of the Version 3.0 thread that she did - I get no credit for this work - it was all solojones)

Our first interview for this thread is with the lovely and talented LuvEwan. This interview, done by myself, Knight_Dilettante, is way way overdue solely because of my life issues, so my apologies for that. However, I think you'll find it is well worth the wait to learn what makes this clever author tick.

We almost lost the chance of new works from her when the very talented LuvEwan took some time away from writing fanfic last year. But she's back and just as talented as ever. Last month marked her 4th year on these boards. Those who've visited Resource, particularly the Obi-Wan character discussion thread, or perused the stories on the Saga, Before, and Classic story boards are no doubt familiar with her work. But I think there's surprises in here for all of us! Prepare to be shocked, and amazed. Kind of like when you read her work. Only without as much angst and heartbreak. wink I mean, who knew she was a huge Sean Connery fan?

1. Could you share some background information about yourself with us?

I’m female. I like to write, that’s basically what I do with my free time. I also like to sketch, but that comes and goes. My favorite film is Brokeback Mountain, followed close behind by anything that features a certain Scottish actor; you can guess which one. I love The Beatles, Norah Jones, Jack Johnson, Rufus Wainwright and Billy Joel. I’ve watched The Simpsons since I was very little, no other show compares to it for me, although Roseanne, Will & Grace and Arrested Development are high on the list. I don’t have any idea where my life is going career-wise, but I try not to think about that.

2. When did you first get into Star Wars?

I always hated Star Wars. When The Phantom Menace was coming out, there was an issue of Entertainment Weekly with Ewan as Obi-Wan on the cover and I threw it out (I actually thought he was Luke Skwalker). Then, the Saturday after it premiered, I was at a department store when I saw this huge poster of Obi-Wan. I bought the shirt displayed underneath it, went to the theater, and the rest is incredibly nerdy history. So Ewan’s face is what initially interested me about the whole thing. You could say it’s a constant inspiration. tongue

3. And what about fanfiction? When did you first start writing it and what drew you to it?

I can’t remember exactly when I found out about fanfiction. I was playing on a computer at my mom’s work and found a story about young Obi-Wan and Qui-Gon. I printed it out and read it and was in total awe that I was reading something more about these characters I loved. I found the stories on the web so much more satisfying than the junior novels written in the same time period (pre-TPM), and there were just so many of them. I thought it was great.

4. What has influenced your writing style the most?

I think, in ‘pro-fic’, my life changed when I read All the King’s Men by Robert Penn Warren. I loved the way he injected meaning into everything, the connections he made, the vividness of the characters. That book made me realize that there was more to a story than what was printed on the page. I try to remember that when I start writing something. In fanfic, I’ve encountered some writers who remind me that there are countless aspects of writing a character, a scene, a plot. Authors like CYNICAL_21, dianethx, maychorian and Princess_Arulmozhi. I think reading their work makes me want to write my own, in hopes that I can tell a story half as well as they’re telling theirs.

5. You write a lot of vignettes. Is that because you prefer the short form or because your stories are so heart-breaking at times that that's all the angst you can handle at a time? Or because you know it is all the angst your readers can handle at a time?

Writing vignettes is a solution for my lack of commitment. I like reading and writing long stories, but after awhile I think I lose grasp of my ideas, and my head gets crowded with more. A vignette gives me the chance to write the concept I’ve been obsessing about, without taking a lot of time or giving up halfway through.

6. Which story has been your favorite to write so far?

I don’t think I have a favorite. My overall feelings for them are all the same, pretty much. I go between hating them and liking them, because they are almost foreign to me. I’ll read over a passage and won’t have the slightest inkling where it came from. I did like posting A Change of Plans because it was especially fun reading the reader reactions to that one.

7. Which story has given you the most trouble so far?

I’d say The Broken Cadence Rolls, an alternate universe story that I started from a plot bunny I adopted from the immensely talented and creative shanobi. After every post, I hit an enormous wall. It’s very frustrating, because I know where I need to go (thanks to dianethx) but not how to get there.

8. Who is your favorite character to write and why?

Hmmm…that’s a hard one….let me think…*taps chin* Maybe Salacious Crumb or Jabba the Hutt. Or maybe Obi-Wan. I think I only have a handful (or less) stories that don’t feature or mention Obi-Wan in one way or another. Why is he my favorite? Because he’s quiet, he’s compassionate, the steady core of the saga. Of course he has his faults, but I don’t think there’s anyone as selfless or dedicated to a cause as he is. I think this quote from Labyrinth of Evil personifies what I love about him, an exchange between Anakin and Obi-Wan:
“ ‘And you, Master. What does your heart tell you you’re meant for?’
‘Infinite sadness’, Obi-Wan said, even while smiling.”

I like characters that aren’t over-the-top, who possess this inherent sense of right and wrong. I think my very favorite thing about him is that he’s understated. That’s the kind of characters I’m always drawn to.

9. Which character, if any, would you like to completely re-imagine from the film versions and why?

I would re-imagine Obi-Wan as an exotic dancer. I think it’s pretty obvious why. tongue Really though, I think I would’ve kept Qui-Gon around longer, given him more of a chance to develop as a character. One film wasn’t enough…plus, he could’ve taken some of the burden off of Obi-Wan.

10. You started your first story on the boards four years ago to the month, how do you think your writing style has changed over those four years?

I don’t re-read my oldest stuff, so I’m not sure how it’s changed. I’m too afraid to even peek at it.

11. About a year ago (if I recall correctly) you caused a minor panic in your readership by announcing you were going to stop writing fanfic. We all were relieved to learn it turned out not to be a permanent departure as a writer but more of a sabbatical. What was the hardest thing about that sabbatical and what was the best thing about it?

I left after finishing a ROTS AU that had a good number of responses. I figured I would never do better than that, and it was during a time when I was making a lot of changes in my life. It really was meant to be a permanent departure. I started writing some original things, but I missed the community feel of posting stories, and I knew I wasn’t in the right place to write a novel, which is what I hope to do once I think I’m capable of it. The hardest thing was not being able to jot down all the ideas I was having post-ROTS, and the best thing was having free time to just read other people’s work.

12. You always have such fascinating titles for your stories. While it is not always clear at first why the title is what it is, by the time one has read the story one knows it is the perfect title. How do you choose the title?

Thanks! Some of my titles are taken from song lyrics. Many have come from Norah Jones and The Beatles, and I base the story around the title. Other times I just pick out a phrase from the finished piece and use it as the title. I hate thinking of titles. It’s such an important part of the writing process, but it can be the most difficult sometimes. I like titles that stand out, but sometimes a one or two word title fits the story.

13. Faintly, From Memories is a fascinating AU vignette that I can't be alone in wanting to see more of the story from. The story notes explain that is was written as a challenge response for a "rejection" challenge. Did it spring to mind nearly complete or did you decide what you wanted to write about and then craft it? Did you plan on the repetition of the theme of rejection in the story or did that just come about as you wrote it? How did you decide what would be different in that AU? If you aren't ever going to continue it can you share anything further about that alternate universe with your readers? Any crumbs will be happily devoured I am sure.

The story sprang from a scene I started thinking about, in which Councilor Obi-Wan enters a Council meeting late and Qui-Gon’s there. Obi-Wan ends up saying he doesn’t know who he is, and that he can’t help him, all in this very polite, very reserved way. But then it somehow turned into Obi-Wan being a bartender instead. The first rejection, of Qui-Gon by the Council, was meant to be the whole thing. But then I got the image of Obi-Wan in a bar, and the second rejection worked itself out that way. I really wanted Qui-Gon to be an outsider, surrounded by these stern Jedi, swearing that he remembered them. I’ve had some help working out a plot for extending that vignette, but I don’t think I’ll say more than that. wink

14. A Change of Heart is another challenge response, this time for the Mature Themes thread. The descriptions in this vignette are beautifully done as is the depiction of the very difficult, for Ullo, conversation. How did you work out the conversation? Did it just flow for you or did you plan out each portion, knowing exactly what effect you wanted from each exchange?

I knew roughly what I wanted Ullo to express, his pain and fears, and the fact that he couldn’t keep it inside him forever. With Qui-Gon, he was saying, pretty much, everything I feel on the subject. In many ways, I’d been writing it in my head for a while, in my thoughts on the broad topic, just without any specific characters attached to it. I suppose it means more to me because of that.

15. The Killing Shard is another amazing AU story. In this story your style is a little less lyrical, more evocative to me of someone like Anakin who had spent time in a harsh segment of the real world than of some of the other characters who had always lived apart from it in some ways as Jedi for example. Was that a conscious choice because you were writing from Anakin's point of view or did it just happen?

I think it just happened. It was after I was writing a little original work, and when I went back to writing fanfic, it came out differently. After the first post, though, I settled into the style of it and I was writing in Anakin’s viewpoint.

16. Your descriptions are so beautifully put together that I usually find myself turning green with envy as I read. How do you create such perfect descriptive phrases?

Thank you. love I think of everything as I go. An image enters my head and I try to translate it as best as I can. I usually see things like rooms and facial expressions very clearly in my head, and I enjoy describing them. I can’t see action, so when I have to describe that, I think of the Revenge of the Sith video game. grin Description is my favorite thing about writing, I think.

17. In a similar vein, your stories often contain imagery that is almost other-worldly in that it seems lyrical, almost fey at times. How do you draw such beautiful images with words? Do you see what you want to say and try to describe it or do the words just flow? Or do you spend months crafting the phrases and images that are so telling? Do you consciously strive for that fey other-worldly tinge to your imagery or does it just happen?

I don’t spend a lot of time preparing anything. The actual storyline, the bare bones of it, will pop up when I’m doing something boring like driving or laying in bed at night. The description comes as I write. I don’t intend for it to be any certain way, most of the time. If it’s meant to be especially dark or light-hearted, then I’ll keep that in mind, but otherwise I just go with it.

18. Would you say you write more AU stories than strictly canon stories? If so, is there a specific attraction to writing AUs? Or is it just that what you are inspired to write turns out to be AU more often than not? Or not?

I’m sure I write way more AU stories than canon. I like keeping certain characters alive, or killing them prematurely. I also think it’s fun to take a small detail from the films or books and quirk it enough to change almost everything that happens afterward. But with most AU stories, I like to have it ultimately end with things turning out the same, as in the Universe remains engulfed in the darkness of the Sith. skull

19. Do you have any tips for fellow fan fiction writers?

Write what you want to write. Otherwise, there’s no reason for it. Write it even if it ends up crumpled in the trash or stuffed at the back of a drawer. Even if no one else sees it, write it anyway.

20. And finally, what are your plans for the future in fan fiction?

I want to finish up the stories I’ve left hanging this summer, and expand one of my vignettes. But my feelings about writing change from day to day, so I never know.

Thank you so much LuvEwan for patiently waiting for questions and then even more patiently answering them so fully.

That was a wonderful interview, LE and KD. I especially loved the part where about where you (LE) hated SW (I'm glad it wasn't permanent, and that that face drew you in. grin ). I've often been awed at your sheer ability to produce lyrical prose, and your talent to bring a story to life. Obi-Wan, especially. 'A Change of Plans' is one of my all-time favourites. I remember gaping at the screen with every post, thinking, "How does she do it?"

About the mention - I am truly, deeply honoured. blush

I wish you'd write tons of fics. I expect that's a bit greedy - but you've got me addicted. grin

Great interview! It was sweet of you to mention me, LE, [face_hug] but it felt a bit backwards. grin You influence me more than you'll probably ever know. It was because of your writing, among others', that I felt compelled to stop reading fanfic and start writing. Thank you so much! I enjoyed learning more about you.
