Of your own OCs, which is your favorite?

My son and daughter. They are definitely the two most original characters I’ve ever created.

That's the best answer I've seen yet. Ale, you're a great guy and this was a wonderful interview.

Our next interview is with Layren.

Layren has been an active member of the FanFic community for quite some time. Her name is well-recognized around FanFic, and she spends time both writing and hanging out in Resource, as well as volunteering for the awards. She is the former CR and president of the Tennessee fan force.

Can you give us some background information about yourself?

I was born in 1981. Not long after I was born my mom started noticing that my fingers and toes were always blue. Since I was her first child, she of course assumed nothing was wrong and that things were fine, merely thinking I was cold natured. I came down with an ear infection right before we were due to move to Atlanta and my mom took me to my pediatrician and he insisted I go immediately to the hospital as soon as I got to Atlanta. When I went into surgery they discovered I had a very rare heart condition known as Tetralogy of Fallot with Pulmonary Atresia. I had a stent put in when I was 10 ½ months old so that I could make it to have a replacement pulmonary valve put in. I had that when I was five. I’ve had four more open-heart operations since then, the most recent one being in March 2004, for a total of five open hearts.

I come from a relatively typical suburban background other than that. I have two siblings, a younger brother and sister. My mom and dad met and married all within six weeks and they’ve been together for over 25 years.

I met the wonderful man who is my husband in August 2002. We met online, actually, at www.churchofchristsingles.com where we were both registered members in their chatroom. We chatted back and forth for a while and we eventually realized we had to meet, so that year he came to see me the weekend of my birthday. That same week he sent me a dozen roses, a teddy bear and a hand drawn card with a rose on it – he’s the most wonderful artist… I was in love before I ever even saw him face to face and then he drove seven hours to meet me in person on top of all the roses and other gifts…. We were engaged Labor Day weekend and we married Christmas that same year.

Four and a half years and with three major operations (gallbladder, open-heart, and hysterectomy) and three moves under our belt, we’re still as madly in love as before.

I work part time doing temporary work as a secretary / payroll clerk for a construction firm. I manage the local branch here in town and our headquarters is in Nashville, TN. I’m usually the only one at the office most days. It’s really a great job because there’s so much down time on the job to where I can focus on fanfiction and whatever else I feel up to doing. I’m a huge soundtrack fanatic; I have over 50 in my collection. My most prized one is a recently acquired National Treasure soundtrack, which is incredibly difficult to find. (It’s currently going for $50 apiece on e-bay. Hubby imported it from England to make it easier on our budget, but the cheaper cost made it take over a month to arrive.) I make soundtracks for all of my fanfics with a handy little program my hubby discovered called Audacity . It’s incredibly user friendly and it’s freeware – what more could you ask for? In my spare time I make candles. I've only recently started doing this. It's really fun and I have a good time. Candles make great gifts.

I do a lot of reading and writing when I'm not doing that. Children's novels are some of my favorite to read. I'm a huge Harry Potter fan and I've got parts of those books memorized, I've read them so many times. Some of my other favorites are Catherine, Called Birdy by Karen Cushman, a really funny book about a girl in the middle ages and how she tries to get rid of her unwanted suitors.., the Ramona series by Beverly Cleary, Superfudge by Judy Bloom.

How did you get into Star Wars?

Believe it or not, I actually hated Star Wars when I was growing up… ducks to avoid putrid fruit

When my mom and dad would watch it, I would always leave the room. Because of my medical condition, I have this terrible phobia of blood and needles and medical scenes in movies and things like that and I thought that with War in the title, it was a really bloody war movie or something like that because I kept coming in at all the wrong parts – when the guy’s hand got chopped off in the Mos Eisely Cantina…when Luke was nearly strangled by the dianoga …when Luke got his hand chopped off…the medical bay at the end… you get the idea.

What happened to change all that was a severe crush I had when I was 16 on this guy who was part of the youth group where I went to church. He was a major Star Wars/Star Trek junkie and he was really hot! And… he happened to be dating my sister instead of me…

To absolutely crush me further, my sister was too young to date and my parents insisted on me chaperoning their date and they were going to see Return of the Jedi when the Special Editions were out. I knew it was the last in a trilogy and I knew we had a copy of the first movie somewhere in the house and I wanted to have some clue of what was going on in the film so I wouldn’t be clueless about the characters. I watched Star Wars for the first time all the way through on a tiny 9 inch screen in my folks’ garage. I was practically glued to the screen and the next day when we went to see the film… I was totally blown away and in awe of The Flanneled One from then on.

When did you start writing fanfic?

I began writing fanfic actually out of boredom in the most boring class imaginable, Ancient World Literature, taught by the same professor who happens to be my sister’s father-in-law now – odd how things happen like that isn’t it? I was really excited about this class at first, until the professor actually started speaking and we weren’t doing any of the exciting ancient things like Beowulf, which I just love and I think is a fantastic story. We didn’t even get to read any Arthurian legends or things of that nature but we were stuck reading The Iliad and the Odyssey which I absolutely loathed… and so I started writing fanfic to pass the time in class. I had been role-playing for several years by that time so I merely took things a step further.

How did you find the JC? Have you posted fanfic elsewhere?

Dianethx is the one to blame for me being here at the JC. I originally discovered theforce.net waaay back in the day when I was browsing for information about TPM and I had registered but lost the password and forgot about the website until much later. In 2001, when I was dabbling in fanfic, I decided I wanted to read more about the Jedi and I stumbled upon the Qui-Gon Jinn Discussion List and I instantly registered and became a member there. Diane was another member there and she was posting the most magnificent story, Betrayal, there. She told me that she posted also on theforce.net and that she posted more often there. It took me awhile but eventually, desperate for more of her delicious story, I bit the bullet and registered again and this time I stayed. I got a wonderful adopter, Qui-Gina Jinn, and learned to navigate my way around the boards.

Do you write non-Star Wars fanfic or original fiction of any sort? If the latter, do you have plans to get published?

I haven’t much in the past, but lately I have dabbled in the realm of original fiction. I’ve become extremely fond of my original characters and I have a great deal of desire to see what I can come up with in the way of an original world for them all. I don’t fandom hop with fanfiction. I’m a huge Harry Potter fan (Go Gryffindor!) but I never write Harry Potter fanfiction. There’s not as many opportunities for plot bunnies and original characters in that universe, in my opinion.

What or who has influenced your writing style the most? Are there any special authors, on the boards or publish, that you try to write like?

Actually a friend of mine who has only recently registered on the boards, Lithiniel, has probably influenced my writing the most of all. We started role-playing back in 2000 and through her influence I learned a great deal about collaborating and it’s truly my favorite way to write. It’s always great to have someone to help you when the muse decides to go on vacation.

Of the three FanFic boards, which is your favorite to write in?

Before the Saga, of course grin When I first started writing, Saga and Beyond were incredibly intimidating and they moved so darn fast that I was really intimidated to try there. I met up with Greencat336 because I had read one of her fanfics on the Before the Saga boards. She was brought in originally as torture consultant for a fanfic I was trying to write with my cousin (who wasn’t a really big star wars fan and left the project) and ended up becoming collaborator. She taught me a great deal about how the fanfic forum worked and etiquette in reviewing other author's works. my Adopter wasn't as well versed in fanfic as Greencat was.

Who is your favorite character?

[face_batting_eyes] Do you mean canon or original? My favorite canon character is Qui-Gon Jinn. No contest. A lot of people were furious at Qui-Gon for the famous scene in the Council chamber where he pushed Obi-Wan aside in favor of Anakin. I looked at it from a different point of view. Qui-Gon believed in a cause and believed in it strongly enough to do whatever it took to get what he thought was right. It takes a gut load of courage to stand up to anyone telling you you’re wrong, much less sticking to your guns even though 12 of the finest Masters in the Order tell you the same. I admired him for his incredible courage in holding to his beliefs no matter who told him he was wrong. He was a man of great faith. Too bad there was no one else in the Order like him.

If you mean original character – It's like asking which of your kids is your favorite tongue Though I'd probably have to go with Kyran Josel in the end. He's been around the longest (his birthday is July 9th, 2001, I still have the original file he was born in someplace) and he's appeared in almost every single story I've ever written to date and the thing about original characters is you can change their lives and things as you see fit and it doesn't have to mesh with what you've already done previously. He's had several different lives. In one series, he was married, in Repercussions he and Qui-Gon and Devin Ly'rath were best friends. The possibilities for what to do are limitless.

You’re co-writing a story with Neon Star called My Dreams Could Be Tomorrow. Can you tell us a little bit about that?

It’s an ongoing series and it’s been going for over two years under another name; the Days Like These series. It’s hard to actually tell what it’s about really without giving away all the plot tongue but I’ll do my best. This brainchild of ours was originally supposed to be a short, cute little series and it didn’t have much plot.

In the original original series, Days Like These 1.0Shane was slated to die at age 26 of a terrible illness and Kyran and Qui-Gon were to carry on alone.

At some point, I just couldn’t bear to kill Shane. I begged and pleaded with my collaborator to keep him alive. I had become very fond of him and I write for a lot of escapist reasons and having someone die of an illness like that was a little too close to real life for me and combined with the fact that we really had no plot to start with then, we started exploring other options and then we thought of Revenge of the Sith and wondered if there was any possible way whatsoever to prevent the slaughter of the Jedi – if with enough warning would they change, or would they be slaughtered anyway and turn a deaf ear to the warnings.

And that’s how this version of Days Like These came to be, that we eventually had to stop writing.

It was originally a trilogy, but during the third book you stopped writing and decided to re-do it. Why?

It actually wasn’t a trilogy, it was intended to be many more books than that, but that’s only as far as we got in our writing and it took two years and 600+ pages to get to that point. When we developed plot we realized after about eight drafts of the first major arch in book three that things weren’t working with the new plot we had developed mid-way through book one. Things were unraveling on us because our foundation was terrible and we were struggling to stay afloat. We had more plot holes than Jude Watson and there were some really bad ones too. After many tears it was eventually decided that we would scrap it entirely and start afresh. It was an extremely difficult decision – it was like we had lost one of our best friends. For a few days we were devastated to where we couldn’t write much but we eventually got our groove back.

We decided a complete break from the old series was necessary because things changed so much when we started fixing the plot holes, that it wasn’t the same story anymore at all but something entirely new, hence the title. The only thing that remains is the first half of the first post and the characters names. Everything else has been completely rewritten. Even the Master and Padawan pairings aren’t the same anymore because we decided they just didn’t work and that’s part of why the old series wasn’t working.

It’s been a labor of love and we’ve put a lot of sweat and tears into this and I definitely think we have a much better story now that we have fixed all the holes and changed things so much even though it was incredibly difficult not to mention time consuming! This story has virtually consumed the two of us for the last two years. We tried to get a beta reader with this new rendition but we write at such a large volume and our schedules don’t cooperate sometimes for a beta and we’ve never been able to find a reliable one who can keep up with our twice a week posting schedule, but all the same, we always go back and edit a few times before posting. We don’t always catch everything, but we try.

What makes Shane Callister, Qui-Gon Jinn, and Kyran Josel so special?

The bond they share is really the core of their relationship. It formed before they were born and was completed when they began to use it as small children without any training and they have quite a large destiny ahead of them and they’ll need the bond and all the energy and abilities they can get from it to accomplish their task. We got a lot of inspiration from some truly great stories about friendship, Sam and Frodo, David and Jonathan in the Bible, etc. Those relationships were deep and we wanted our boys to have a relationship as deep and as connected as that and we merely took it a step further.

You also wrote Decisions of Darkness with Kynstar, which won several awards in Before for Summer ’05, and several other, as well as stories with VaderLVR64 and Greencat336. What draws you to writing collabs?

I love working with other people and my muse has always worked best with someone else to bounce ideas off, plus the fact that with my ADHD, I tend to forget that I’m working on something and abandon it if I do it alone in favor of another project and I’m much less likely to neglect a story to the point of abandonment if I do it with someone due to accountability issues.

You were the CR for a Tennessee fan force. What was that like? Do you still belong to that FF?

I’m actually one of the original founding members of that Fanforce. Our very first meeting was held when Hurricane Ivan was coming through and there were three of us. We had just managed to barely scrape the amount together for an official group. It was a lot of fun. The next meeting was easier to do with nicer weather tongue But those early days are some of my fondest memories. They elected me president after our third meeting and we rapidly began to grow and grow and grow due to the fact that Revenge of the Sith was coming out the next year. It was so exciting to be apart of all that. I had to retire though when I started working at a daycare and the strain of doing both was incredible on my limited endurance. I had decided it would be in the best interest of the Fanforce if I passed the torch to someone else and Vesper2112 has done a fantastic job as President since I have left the group. I’m no longer an active member. I’m not doing daycare anymore but I can’t work and do social activities much at the same time. I just don’t have the energy for that sort of thing and when push comes to shove, I have to give up the entertainment rather than the work.

What stories do you have planned for the future?

Planning? What’s that? tongue I don’t have anything planned right now except for working out my original story and trying to get this mega monster of a story that Neon and I have been working on finished. It may kill us, but we’re going to finish. We’ve come too far to give up now.

What do you like best about FanFic? What keeps you still writing?

All the possibilities! You get to see things the movies never showed us and it’s still the same universe. There’s an entire galaxy there at your fingertips just waiting to be explored through an original character. My partners keep me writing when my muse decides to leave grin If I’m really struggling even then once in awhile I’ll pop in the star wars movies and remember just why I’m writing in the first place. It’s helpful to take a step back sometimes and just watch the films and remember why we love this universe to start with.

This is probably a really hard question, but which of your stories is your favorite? Why?

Oy vey, what a question! After much thought I’d have to say the current story I’m working on is also my favorite because I’ve never put half the effort into any other fanfic that I’ve put into this one. I put lots of effort into my others, but this one has been going on for so long, writing, rewriting, rewriting again… it’s truly been the most work out of any story I’ve ever done collaboration or solo and also the most fun and the most frustrating.

In a twist on the famous question, if you could eat dinner with one fanfic author, who would it be and why? What are some of the questions or things you’d say to that person?

Awesome question! Really had to think about this one. I think out of all of the ones on the boards I admire, it’d have to be Dianethx. I’ve followed her for some time now and we’ve tried three years to meet up, but it’s never worked out because I came down with an illness or money issues so that I couldn’t attend DragonCon or some other problem that cropped up.

As far as what I’d say – I’d start with hi and then go from there tongue And hope I wasn’t ridiculously tongue-tied. I’d probably ask her to take my measurements and see if she could make me one of those wonderful costumes she’s so famous for…mine is in serious need of upgrading and has been for years. Unfortunately the funds are low right now. Wouldn’t even have to be a Jedi costume though. Some of her historical ones are absolutely breathtaking and her quilts! I’d love to see them in person. And we’d also chat about Qui-Gon of course wink

If you could give advice to your fellow writers, especially the newer ones, what would you say?

Never underestimate the powerful influence of a mentor. They can be invaluable tools about helping newbies with their stories, with navigating around the boards and learning board etiquette to helping you make new friends. The crèche is an incredibly useful thread and I highly recommend it to all new people.

It takes more than a premise to make a good story. You have to have plot. It absolutely is essential and it’s something I’ve learned the hard way. A lot of work would have been saved if we had followed this advice. Sure we’re all having fun, but stories don’t happen without plot. Make sure you check, double check and triple check for errors, including spacing! Nothing aggravates me more than to see a block paragraph where someone didn’t care enough to space out the sentences and use proper punctuation and grammar.

Don’t fret if no one notices your story at first. Just keep on keeping on writing what you love. Join some of the character discussion threads, read a few fics, depending on your interest and by participating in those you’ll be able to make friends. But don’t always expect everyone who’s fic you read will take an interest yours. Sometimes they do, but it doesn’t always happen.

And finally, have a healthy dose of humor and fun and remember that we’re all here because we love star wars and we love to write. We’re all writing about what we love here and we should all respect each other’s efforts.

Congrats on getting interviewed. dancing Awesome. I learned a few things even though I've known you online for years. I'm so flattered about the things you said. You are very sweet.
