Wonderful interview! Seems like just yesterday we were discussing the functions of the “post” and “edit message” buttons, LOL, and look at you now. Wow.
Another bit of advice is to not take yourself too seriously. You are probably not going to write the Great American Novel. Cormac McCarthy is not glancing nervously over his shoulder at you. It’s supposed to be fun. You’re on a Star Wars fan website, for pete’s sake. Don’t get all knotted up if no one replies to your stories in the first ten minutes. There are some terrific writers on this site, and learn much from them you will, youngling, simply by hanging around, reading, and getting to know people through the threads. It’s fun. Relax.
Have I told you recently how much I like your style?
Thank you so much for the kind words, my friend. This Southern gal would happily brave that cold weather of yours for the honor of having dinner with you.

Excellent learning even more about you, diva. It's always intriguing to read how a writer finds inspiration and builds their own characters. I'm so happy to read this completed and I'll bring the wine if you bring the cheese! LOL

This was such a fun interview to do. Divapilot, you're so much fun to talk to and I love hearing you talk about your stories and writing -- you're one of the most interesting people I've ever talked with. Awesome interview.
And to MirandaFair for the help and the suggestion

LilyHobbitJedi interviewed by NYCitygurl
LilyHobbitJedi is well-known around fanfic an the JC. She's participated in everything from awards volunteering to PT/CT Re-Write contests to Resource challenges. This prolific author has written in all three eras and gained much-deserved attention.
Can you tell us a little about yourself?
I'm 23, and I'm from northern Ohio. I spend most of my time working full time at a restaurant to afford to return to college where I was majoring in Journalism. My favorite thing to do besides reading and writing is playing trumpet, and I'm in a local community band. And when I have the time I love watching Lost, House and Scrubs.
When and how did you become a Star Wars fan?
I would like to say that I’ve always been a Star Wars fan because I honestly don’t remember the first time I saw it. I’ve always loved it from childhood, but I didn’t become addicted to Star Wars until ROTS came out.
How did have you been writing Star Wars fanfiction? How did you start? Is Star Wars the first fandom you've written in? Do you write any original fiction?
I started out writing Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter crossovers in 2002 and I moved into some Lost fanfiction. It wasn’t until 2005 that I discovered the JC Forums and not long after I was writing my first SW fanfic. As far as original fanfic goes, I am currently working on a novel for NaNoWriMo.
What inspires you to write?
I get inspired by many things. Mostly by my own experiences, but also by other stories I’ve read and heard. For several of my SW stories, I wrote them because of questions I had, and wanted to change canon in my own way. I also enjoy writing events from a different perspective than normally. Lots of times I am inspired to write something just in order to satisfy my own curiosity.
You’ve won the PT and CT re-write contests once each. What interests you in them? Can you tell us a little about your entries?
I love the idea of being able to see a new perspective rather than what we saw on screen and the rewrite contests gave my that opportunity.
My first win was for the PT contest and it was called The Death of Hope. Basically we had to write about the death of a Jedi during Order 66. I told it from the perspective of a Jedi padawan at the Temple.
My CT rewrite win was for Musings which was set during Obi-Wan's meeting with Luke in ANH, and the big difference is that Obi-Wan and Qui-Gon are having a conversation through the Force during the whole scene.
You do the New Stories Indices for Beyond. What got you interested in doing them? Are they hard work? Do you use them to find good stories?
Doing the index always seemed like it would be an interesting job so when the job for Beyond was available I took it. Yes doing it is hard work sometimes, but I still find it rewarding. And I have definitely found several amazing stories that I might not have noticed before if it wasn't for me keeping the index.
Speaking of public service, you also worked on the Fanfic Awards last year. Why do you enjoy volunteering?
The fanfic community gives me so much, I just feel like its only right to give back in some way. Plus I like helping out and volunteering for the fanfic awards always sounded interesting and I was too curious not to sign up.
You wrote “Jedi At Hogwarts,” an HP crossover with the JA. What about mixing Hogwarts and Jedi do you like? How did Obi-Wan and Siri end up on Earth? What is their relationship, and how does it go through changes during their experiences?
I love crossovers. The idea of mixing Star Wars and Harry Potter was highly intriguing because of the similarities between the two. In Jedi At Hogwarts Obi-Wan and Siri end up at Hogwarts because of the Force. It sent them there in order to help Harry bring down Voldemort. Later a former Jedi living on Earth gives them his transport and coordinates for their return to Coruscant.
One of the big challenges for this story was the big difference between the HP magic and the Force. Both are passed down through genetics of course, and Obi-Wan and Siri were able to use magic easily once they acquired wands. Harry, Ron and Hermione on the other hand couldn't use the Force because they don't have the midichlorians.
Obi-Wan and Siri start off as good friends like in the JA books and in my story they do fall in love. They are warned by a prophecy that one of them will be struck with an evil spell and so they took advantage of what time they had. When they finally do go home they know that once more relationships are forbidden but they take it in stride and were thankful they had the time together that they did.
You wrote “A Necessary Deception” with KELIA. It’s a very interesting AU: Anakin and Padme never met up during AOTC, and Jedi are allowed to marry. The latter is especially interesting. What is their relationship like? How did you get the idea for the changes?
First and foremost I have to give the credit for the plot to KELIA. It was her idea and I'm very privileged that allowed me to work with her. When I first heard the plotline I totally loved it, everything from Padme working as a secret agent to overthrow Palpatine to the fact that Jedi could marry. In A Necessary Deception Padme and Anakin rekindle their friendship and fall in love. But their relationship is sorely tried because Padme can't tell Anakin her secret, and when he does find out disaster strikes. Luckily they are able to overcome it in the end.
What did you like about co-writing a story? How is it different than writing one solo?
Co-writing this story with KELIA was a joy from start to finish. For the most part we were always on the same page. I think that's the hardest part about co-writing; you always have to make sure that what you write won't conflict with what the other author is planning unlike when you are writing one yourself.
Tell us a little about Jorya Lank, the OC from your 2007 Diary Challenge entry. How was she created? What is she like? What is her relationship with Teagan? Will her story continue in a sequel? Can you give us some spoilers about the end?
Jorya is probably one of my favorite OC's. She's a 17 year old Jedi padawan who is definitely still acts like a teenage girl despite her Jedi training. She has a great sense of humor and is a bit of a klutz and I actually modeled her a little bit after myself. At the beginning of the story Jorya is still very innocent of what's going on around her and is forced to face the harsh truths of war very quickly. Her diary is very much her sounding board, telling it things she could never openly reveal.
Jorya's relationship with Tegan started off as a good friendship. They were both padawans around the same age and both lost their master's. When Jorya loses hers, Tegan is her sole support and she eventually falls in love with him.
I have no plans for Jorya's story to continue as a sequel, but I never know for sure if I'll get the inspiration or not. I'm not going to reveal too much, but I will say that Jorya won't be at the Temple during Order 66. And I'm quite the sucker for happy endings.
How did you fit Siri and Obi-Wan into your Beyond story “Echoes of the Past?” How will they influence the lives of Luke, Han, Leia, and Mara? What part does the mysterious “Dark Jedi” play in this, and can you tell us a little about him?
Echoes of the Past was a challenge given to me by my former master to be my first attempt at a Beyond story. In the story the remnants of the Empire are growing stronger being led by a Dark Jedi who goes by the name of Zora, but is actually Siri. She escaped Order 66 and was guided to the Dark Side by a clone of Sidious.
Throughout the story she tries to kill Leia, but is stopped time after time by Luke and Mara. At the same time Luke is slowly discovering the true identity of Zora from a Force ghost Obi-Wan, who sheds some light on who she truly was and is. He will be instrumental in helping Luke during the final battle.
Since Beyond is outside of your normal comfort zone, are you finding it challenging to write a story set in that era?
Yes it has been challenging in some ways. When I first started writing my story for Beyond I then knew nothing that happened after ROTJ and so I made my own AU reality. It was also difficult at first for me to write EU characters like Mara Jade. At the time I first wrote her I knew nothing beyond what I've read in other fanfics. Luckily I was able to grasp it soon enough. Writing in Beyond is a challenge I enjoy, and I'm sure that it's not my last time venturing there.
What draws you to Obi-Wan and Siri? What do you like about them as a couple?
I think one of the main things that drew me to Obi-Wan and Siri was that they total opposites in their personalities and the choices they make. They started out strongly disliking each other yet slowly became best friends and ended up falling in love despite all the complications it involved. Because the story of their romance is such a tragedy, I think that’s one main reason I like to write stories about them. I want to give them what they never had in canon.
“The Princess and the Padawan” is very different from the usual stories involving them. Where did you get the idea to make Siri a princess? What other fairy-tale elements have you added? How do Obi-Wan and Siri overcome the obstacles of being in love when he’s a Jedi?
I think I first got the idea for the story from Jedi Quest #5 where Obi-Wan and Siri pretend to be a King and Queen. At some point Obi-Wan points out that Siri would make "an amazing queen if she weren't a Jedi". I think that's where the notion for The Princess and the Padawan first came from. The story was also greatly inspired by Moulin Rouge.
The idea of having Siri as a princess was intriguing to me, because she would absolutely hate the formalities being royalty would involve. Like many fairy tales Siri is forced into an arranged marriage and can't stand her fiancée and then Obi-Wan comes into the picture. They soon fall in love and when their romance is exposed they are forced to part. An evil villain kidnaps Siri the damsel in distress and her brave knight fought to rescue her.
The true love that Obi-Wan and Siri shared never failed them. Obi-Wan saves the Jedi at the Temple and shows that his attachment to Siri only made him a better Jedi. The Council recognizes this and gives Obi-Wan and Siri their blessing. And then they live happily ever after.
The sequel, “The Knight and His Queen,” is set several years later and is in the Saga era. How does your AU differ from the canon? What role does Qui-Gon play in Obi-Wan’s life? How do Xanatos and his son, Granta Omega, influence the story?
One of the big reasons The Knight and His Queen differs from canon is that Qui-Gon wasn't killed during the events of TPM. Since relationships are allowed for Jedi now, Obi-Wan and Siri have two children. Qui-Gon still shares a strong bond with Obi-Wan and is teaching his son, Ral-Gon. Obi-Wan on the otherhand is still Anakin's master.
Near the beginning of the story Xanatos escapes from prison, and not long before that Granta Omega was just elected as Telos' new ruler. Qui-Gon and Ral-Gon go to investigate because there was no opposition whatsoever to Omega's rule. Qui-Gon eventually realizes that Omega is Xanatos son, and that the wheels for Xanatos' revenge have long been in motion.
Speaking of fairy tales, tell us a little about “Mirror, Mirror, On the Wall.” How did the challenge prompt give you ideas? Who does Obi-Wan think he’s like?
The idea for the challenge was honestly so intriguing I couldn't resist doing it. To make Obi-Wan show one or more qualities of the Seven Dwarfs was hilarious, and the thought of a Bashful Obi-Wan was something I just HAD to write. To put such a generally calm Jedi into an embarrassing situation was so much fun for me and I really enjoyed that challenge.
How did you get the idea for writing a “Whose Line is it Anyway” in the Star Wars universe? How does it differ from most of your stories? Why are the padawans so desperate to get out of Qui-Gon’s clutches by the end?
I've always been a fan of Whose Line is it Anyway? and the games are so much fun that I knew I just had to write it. I've actually written Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter and LOST versions of the game before I started the Jedi Apprentice one. The image of Qui-Gon forcing Obi-Wan and the others was too interesting of a concept to not write.
This story is hugely different from the rest of my stories since it's based on an improv show instead of a premeditated plot that I've outlined first. Writing humor is fun for me, but most of my stories are drama or romance so I don't do it often. It was a challenge to make the story flow, but I really enjoyed writing something different from my norm.
In Whose Line, Qui-Gon tricks Obi-Wan, Siri, Garen and Bruck into joining the game saying it's their pre-trial trial. Eventually the padawans catch on and grow sick of the game, and escape Qui-Gon as soon as they can.
What draws you to writing drama and romance? Why do you spend more time writing them instead of humor?
Writing drama and especially romance stories have always been my favorite things to write because I love the complicated plots I can come with. Those stories really get my creative juices flowing and I love it. Writing humor is a blast, but I don't get as much of thrill writing them.
“Come What May,” was your first story, a Siriwan songfic based on Moulin Rouge. How is Obi-Wan and Siri’s storyline similar to the characters in the movie? What happened to them to break them apart?
Just like Christian and Satine in Moulin Rouge, Obi-Wan and Siri are forced to part forever due to circumstances out of their control. Just like Satine, Siri perishes leaving Obi-Wan to deal with her passing. In the story, Obi-Wan remembers their precarious love and knows that even though she is dead it lasts no matter what may come.
“A Holo is Worth a Thousand Words” is filled with rabid fangirls, beach vacations, and Obi-Wan in a speedo (which had every Obi fan who read it drooling). How in the world did you get the idea? Would you ever attempt something like it again?
A Holo Is Worth A Thousand Words was a story that was a spark of insanity that just struck a chord with me. I don't know where exactly the idea to put Obi-Wan in a Speedo came from, but I wanted to make him wear something he would NEVER wear in reality. I don't know if I will ever write anything like it in the future, but if inspiration hits again I will definitely do it.
If you could have dinner with one fanfic author, who would it be?
There are many authors I love and that is a very tough question. But if I had to pick just one, I would have to say Kelia. Not only is she a fantastic author, but she always has good insight and I value her opinion.
Do you have any advice for your fellow authors, especially the newer ones?
Definitely! First, don't be discouraged by reviews you may get that criticize your stories. I know it’s extremely hard to take constructive criticism, but it's there to help. I know for a fact that in the long run, the criticism I've gotten over the years has only made me a better writer. Those reviews are gold, despite what they may seem on the surface.
Another thing, don't get discouraged by lack of reviews. If you cannot be satisfied writing with no audience then perhaps you shouldn't write at all. Writing fanfic should be first for yourself and a fun hobby, not something to get stressed about. When you have confidence in your stories, then others will notice and only then will they have confidence in you.
