Valley_Lord, I think I actually agree with you (well mostly). Looking back, I think the transition from the NJO to LOTF was smooth, but it didn't make sense when I first read it. However, I think DN was intended to illustrate Jacen's "downward spiral," if you will. I agree in that I think Jacen COULD have been a very cool character with his mix of empathy and dual knowledge. Mostly, the authors were looking for conflict. This is an interesting subject, when we apply it to the universe we love. I really wish they hadn't used my favorite character to do it, but in ABSTRACT I find deep theme in this story.
Still, it irks me, as well, that they turned sweet, empathic Jacen Solo into...that.
I'll be back. There's more I'd like to discuss, but right now I have to get ready for graduation.

They could've just had Caedus be a totally new character who is just downright insane. Not turn Jacen Solo into the insane wacko. It would've been cool to see Jacen take on someone like that.

When I first started reading the whole LOTF series, I was majorly po'd because Jacen was one fo the staple characters I grew up reading. He wasn't as hard as his sister, and he displayed a degree of morals that many of the Jedi are lacking, so when I learned they were turning him Sith, I came very close to giving up on the entire Star Wars series, altogether. But, the more I read, the more I grew intrigued by the idea of possibly saving Jacen, but no, they couldn't do that. They can turn Anakin Skywalker from the Dark Side, but Jacen, they just stab in the heart.
When they killed Mara Jade, I was like, okay, he's done a bad thing, but Anakin had killed nearly every single Jedi alive, and he still came back. So, why do that to Jacen?! And what happens now?
