Welcome to the Over 30 SW Writers Club~2nd Edition

The original thread was started back in 2003 by PadmeLeiaJaina. She now has passed the torch on to Jade_Pilot.

The mission for this club is to provide a friendly meeting place where writers and readers of SW who are over 30 or close to it (25-29 are welcome as associate members) can discuss their love and fascination of SW.

The club plans to offer discussion topics and a monthly writing challenge. Club members may submit ideas for topics and challenges to the Over_30_Writers_Club sock. Suggestions are greatly appreciated and will be considered as needed.

FIRST thing to do is introduce yourself by answering a few painless questions:

1) Age- (This is optional, but do remember you are in good company here.)

2) How long have you been writing or reading on these boards?

Hello all! I'm so excited to be the co-host of Over 30 SW Writers Club~2nd Edition. I hope you'll join us in some great camaraderie. The main reason we are all here is our love of Star Wars which started back for most of us in 1977. Enjoy and have fun! happy

Here's a little something about me...

1) Age- 29 and holding wink

2) How long have you been reading on these boards? ~ I found the boards when I wanted to know spoilers to ROTS. When ROTS was over, I found SW Fanfiction and absolutely love it! Some day I would like to write my own stories, but for now I will enjoy reading yours.

3) Favorite genre, saga of SW? ~ Currently, Beyond takes up most of my time. I read 37 SW books last year starting with COPL, but my all time fav is the OT. ESB is my fav movie. It has it all. I also like pre-TPM with Obi-Wan.

4) Favorite characters and why? ~ As for the Saga... Han is the man! I love everything about him. Every time I read about Han, I picture Harrison Ford whether it's the finger in the face or his lopsided grin. I'm also a romantic at heart, so I like several couples for their banter and passion... H/L, L/M, K/J and Siriwan. I'm also obsessed with Kyp Durron. *Does fangirl scream*

5) Why has SW always been so special to you? ~ It's a place were I can lose myself and dream about good and evil, right vs wrong, heros and villains. I've seen and read enough about SW to feel as though they are a part of my family too.

Finally...

6) Advice from a writer/reader. ~ Just have fun with it! Write to please yourself, not others.

Thanks ~ Katie

1) Age- (This is optional, but do remember you are in good company here.)
Just turned 45
2) How long have you been writing or reading on these boards?
Since 2000

3) Favorite genre, saga of SW?
I like a little of everything. It's kind of changed over the years. I really like Saga (OT) and I also enjoy Beyond. Drama and Romance mostly.

4) Favorite characters and why?
Luke is my alltime favorite. An average guy who wasn't really anything special but found out he was special and made a difference. I'm also a L/M and H/L shipper.

5) Why has SW always been so special to you?
It's fun movie series and a good escapism.

Finally...

6) Favorite tips or advise for writing.

I like to write out an outline. I don't always follow it, but it helps keep me focused. I don't do it with every story. I've got one bunny I think I'll just write and see where it goes.
Besides having a dictionary and thesaurus handy (real books), I always use a beta. It's amazing what someone else can find.

1) Age- I'm close. 27

2) 4 years

3) That's hard. I love them all, but I mainly write in Beyond the Saga

4) Ben Skywalker. He just has so much potential and a past full of drama. Luke, of course for the same reasons. Anakin Solo because he died fighting for what was right despite his promising future. Obi-Wan because the guy just suffered so much. Qui-Gon because he always had a different way of looking at things.

5) It's sort of a family thing. We're all huge fans and I grew up on it.

6) I'm a huge torture your characters fan. I love to put and see flawed characters in outlandish situations.

How interesting....

Age - Over the hill mischief . I actually have to count back now, erm 32.

How long have you been writing or reading on these boards? - Year and a bit. has it been that long since ROTS came out?

Favorite genre, saga of SW? Mainly on the Saga, I like a bit of humor and angst. And SAGA over here is also an over 50's travel club. laugh

Favorite characters and why? It was Han when I was young but now it's Obi, he's good for a laugh and always hitting the bar at some stage..

Why has SW always been so special to you? I went to see it when I was 3 and loved it. Got the comics every week, not always legally mischief . When I stayed in NY for a year or so I picked up a paperback of the three movies and I realised I had forgotten how good they were. Then the Prequels got started. Was mucho disappointed at TPM but over time I have mellowed. Man. peace

Favorite tips or advise for writing - Don't really have any to be honest. Don't rush things out and post for the sake of it, I suppose. That was handy. laugh

Cheers

1) Age- (This is optional, but do remember you are in good company here.)

My profile admits it because when I joined I was just in my thirties. So no hiding the truth now...38 it is.

2) How long have you been writing or reading on these boards?

Four years of solid writing. Over a half million words in fanfic alone posted here. My read for about 6 months before getting a screenname I guess. I was terrified to post my first post in a reply, but I found everyone generally welcoming.

3) Favorite genre, saga of SW?

I prefer Beyond but have come to enjoy the Saga era. I grew up with ANH and ESB so those are my loves.

4) Favorite characters and why?

Jaina and Jag, top the pile. I wrote a whole spiel one time why, but mostly because they are deep, multi-layered characters. Their flaws make them challenging to write. I love Han and Leia as well but lurk more in those stories. Anakin and Padme, they took me a while to "get" but now I find them fascinating to read and write.

5) Why has SW always been so special to you?

Because it touches the truth of humanity at it's core. There are so many themes that reflect real life yet play out at a mythic level. Amazing.

Thanks for hosting this grin

*delurks*

1) Age

*counts on fingers*

Dear gods, am I actually going to be 32 this year?

2) How long have you been writing or reading on these boards?

Almost two years, I think.

3) Favorite genre, saga of SW?

Er . . . I don't think I have any. As a reader, there are fics I like and dislike in all genres and eras, regardless of the quality. Heck, my favorite fic is in a genre I can't stand. Also, I have this weird mental condition in which I keep getting rabid plot bunnies for the kinds of stories I find boring and swear I will never write.

4) Favorite characters and why?

Lando and Leia (no 'ship intended). I'm not sure why I like them, actually. I suspect it's because the official continuity tends to be ambiguous about what they are. Neither a criminal nor a legitimate businessman, neither a full Jedi nor just a politician - you can write them so many ways and stick to the official versions. (Though I hear they've made Leia into a full-time Jedi in the recent EU. I'm reserving my judgment on that until I've read the books.)

5) Why has SW always been so special to you?

It hasn't. I saw my first SW movie (RotJ) when I was 8 or 9, and it wasn't love at first sight. I rented the OT about 10 years later and failed to fall head over heels in love. It wasn't until Zahn's Thrawn Trilogy that I got hooked, but I sort of got unhooked a third of the way through the NJO because of my interest in other fandoms. Then I found this site and became addicted . . . to the feedback, that is.

So to answer the question: because the fans here are wonderful.

6) Favorite tips or advise for writing.

Steal from the best, then tweak it endlessly until it becomes yours.

Salutations!

1) Age- (This is optional, but do remember you are in good company here.) 29

2) How long have you been writing or reading on these boards?
I've been writing on these boards since Feb of this year, reading since '03.

3) Favorite genre, saga of SW?

genre i'm for pretty much anything, though I prefer darker, more psychological oriented stories over angst or mush. And of course I'm unashamedly Beyond....

4) Favorite characters and why?
I'd have to say that my favorite character would have to be Anakin Solo. He's a great amalmagation of Han and Luke, taking the best parts of both of those characters (Han's rogueishness, Luke's idealism) and twisting them into something uniquely him.

5) Why has SW always been so special to you?
I grew up with SW. It's just always been there

6) Favorite tips or advise for writing.
Always use spellcheck? tongue Seriously, the best advice/tip I could offer is to not stop writing. If you feel like DWB is hitting you, keep writing. If you wake up with a headache, keep writing. If you can't figure out what to do in a scene, write a clown walking into the room, but keep writing. Think you found a theme in this diatribe? Then keep writing...

Yippeeeee! We're up and running!!!

Age: Just call me thirty-something. wink

How long have you been writing or reading on these boards?

I joined in December 2005 and started posting after I acquired my master (JadeLotus) in March. So I've been fan ficcing for five months now

Favorite genre, saga of SW?

I like many genres: humor, angst, romance. I love writing dialogue. As for which saga...well, if I had to pick a favorite...it would be Beyond. I have read most of the EU and love the ongoing tales of Luke Skywalker.

Favorite characters and why?

Luke! Love him. Wanted to take him home with me and put him in a nice tissue lined shoe box when I first saw him on the big screen. He needed me! Really! I also like Mara and Ben, Wedge, his wife Iella and all the Wraith squadron members. And who doesn't love Ghent?

Why has SW always been so special to you?

I've always been a geeky sci-fi kind of girl and when Star Wars came out it sort of made me feel that being a geeky sci-fi kind of girl was okay.

Finally...

Favorite tips or advise for writing.

If you are very new to writing like me, get a master. Mine has helped me tremendously. Then sit down and just start. You can always edit later, but you have to write something first.

And to celebrate....Mountain Dew and Twinkies for everyone!!!! dancing

1) Age- 32 (33 in September)

2) How long have you been writing or reading on these boards? I lurked for a while before joining in November 05... I have been writing ever since. My name is Phil and I'm a FF addict **Hello, Phil**

3) Favorite genre, saga of SW? My favorite genre would have to be either romance or humor. I find the emotions involved with both to be so wonderful. My favorite era would be Before, specifically KOTOR! Although I have been slowly pushing into the Beyond era. NJO beware!

4) Favorite characters and why? Yoda, because of his wisdom and untapped humorous possibilities. Revan/Bastila (KOTOR) and Luke/Mara, because of the romantic relationships that both couples exhibit.

5) Why has SW always been so special to you? Star Wars was my escape. I would spend hours pretending to be in that universe, and the people felt like old friends, the events seemed like distant memories. From the moment I saw the first film, SW became a part of me, and it has never left me. I guess you could say that it helped define who I have become.

Finally...

6) Favorite tips or advise for writing. Just write! Don't concern yourself with what people think of your writing. Others approval is just icing on the cake. Write because you want to write.

Cheers,
Wyo

Age: Still 30 (barely)

How long have you been writing or reading on these boards?

Reading - about two months.
Writing - a couple of weeks.

Favorite genre, saga of SW?

I don't think I really have a favorite era, just that I absolutely despise the prequel timeframe. I'm not too picky on genre, either - a mix of drama, action, and humor tend to make my day, though.

Favorite characters and why?

Luke, Han, Leia - sentimental favorites.
Rogues and Wraiths - they're just spectacularly cool.
Syal & Myri Antilles, Valin & Jysella Horn, and various other EU characters that have not yet been butchered by profic.

Why has SW always been so special to you?

Because I'm in the Star Wars generation - I grew up with it.

Favorite tips or advise for writing.

Let the characters write themselves.

Boredom will ensue. Hoo-whoopty-ray!

1) Age

33 in human years, the fourth stage of decalcification in universal years. (Yes, I'm a blob that can type. Astounding, no?)

2) How long have you been writing or reading on these boards?

I've been reading these boards for about five years. I've been writing since April of this year.

3) Favorite genre, saga of SW?

I don't have a particular favorite genre. What really draws me in are well-written characters and situations.

But my favorite saga is definitely the OT. Non Special Edition.

4) Favorite characters and why?

Luke, because he's...well, there's many qualities, some of which are purely physical...but all of which create one amazing character. grin

Han and Leia, because they're the perfect combination of brains and reality (reality as defined by the SW universe).

5) Why has SW always been so special to you?

It's been so much a part of my life since the age of four, that I can't really tell you in specific terms why it still remains so special to me. Part of the appeal might lie in the mysticism of the Force. Part of it might be the mythological undercurrents that flow within the story arcs.

Finally...

6) Favorite tips or advise for writing.

I have two contradictory tips:

1. Be open to as many influences as possible.

2. Only write what makes you feel most comfortable. I don't think that's limiting yourself as an author. For me, that means I will never attempt any EU fics. I also don't write smut.

leiamoody, you wouldn't happen to have been reading The Maxx lately have you? just read your sig!

1) Age
i'll be 30 for another month or so.

2) How long have you been writing or reading on these boards?
writing and reading since my signup date. actually started writing in general then, too. before that, the last thing i wrote was in college for a term paper.

3) Favorite genre, saga of SW?
i love the OT best, but don't know that i'll ever actually write something in there. for some reason i find it infinitely easier to write PT or Before, so that's where you'll find me.

4) Favorite characters and why?
Obi-Wan is far and away my favorite. he wasn't always, my first love was Luke. Obi is just so interesting to write, a very complex character underneath a facade of simplicity.

5) Why has SW always been so special to you?
oh geez, why to any of us from this generation love it? it's part of who we are, it speaks to some inner part of us that wants to be a Jedi or fly a starship or explore far off places.

6) Favorite tips or advise for writing.
spellcheck is the awesome and wookipedia is your friend. i'll agree with the others here and repeat the mantra: keep writing. you'll turn around months later and find that you've improved beyond what you ever expected. i'd also suggest pushing yourself (or find a Master who will do it for you) and stretch those boundaries. don't just settle for the easy stuff. step out of your comfort zone.

Just joining in for the first time, I hadn't realized you included my age group as close to 30 or that we were invited grin

1) Age- (This is optional, but do remember you are in good company here.)
25

2) How long have you been writing or reading on these boards?
I've been reading a whole lot longer than actually active and posting. I first found this lovely site around 1999 when TPM was first coming out, and I registered a screenname but forgot about it. Later on I met Dianethx through the Qui-GonJinn Online e-mail list and she encouraged me to sign up, claiming she posted more frequent updates on Betrayal (yeah, I was a sucker for falling for that one, huh? tongue j/k Diane)and praising the wealth of talent of the authors over here saying I would find many more Qui-Gon fics to read if I did and so I took her advice and registered again, only this time I got an adoptee who showed me around the boards.

3) Favorite genre, saga of SW?
Before the Saga as era. Genre, Angst with a healthy dose of fluff mixed in grin

4) Favorite characters and why?

Qui-Gon Jinn of the PT. Of the OT, probably Han Solo. For Qui-Gon, he did what he thought was right, standing up for what he believed in, even when it wasn't popular. That takes a lot of guts, a lot of courage to stand up for what you believe like that.

Han because he's quirky and sarcastic yet underneath the smuggler persona he tries to hide behind, he really does care about his friends more than money.

5) Why has SW always been so special to you?
I think because it's all about redemption and the thought that even the vilest of the vile can be redeemed gives me a great deal of hope, personally. It's a really great world to escape to in the midst of a lot of health issues in my life. When I write I don't have to worry about not being able to do a certain thing. I can control what happens to my characters even when I can't control my own life's circumstances, so thus it's cheap therapy tongue

Finally...

6) Favorite tips or advise for writing.
Find a partner when you're stuck. Someone to bounce ideas off works wonders for the muse and accountability is everything if I'm going to ever finish something tongue

Edits -- for markups and grammar somehow my post screwed up in the middle of it....I think I fixed all the errors this time. tongue
