mischief I knew it'd be contageous. The funny thing is, when I saw that picture, the song immediately sprang to mind and I heard it for the rest of the day! What's worse, is I always hated that song. laugh

Becoming a master. Since we are the more seasoned members of TF.net do you feel a responsibility towards mentoring newer writers here?

I think it's always nice to share your experience with newer writers but it is a give-and-take relationship. There is work on both sides and both people have to know that.

Have you been a master in the past? What advice would you give to those who have never mentored, but would like to in the future?

I've been a master 4 times. Each time was completely different. The Padawan really defines the relationship since the Master should be guiding according to what the Padawan needs. Some just want basic instructions on how to use the boards; others want sounding boards or to work on their writing skills. It really depends.

What are some of the pros and cons of the master/padawan relationship?

Pros:
There is the satisfaction of helping someone else grow as a writer.
You get to meet some really nice people.

Cons:
Sometimes the padawan or the master might disappear.
It can take a lot of time depending on how the relationship works. If you are doing beta work for them, you need to know that upfront. Some masters will read all the padawan's work and reply with every post but some will not. (I beta so I don't always post a comment since I don't always have time.)

Since we are the more seasoned members of TF.net do you feel a responsibility towards mentoring newer writers here?

I do, mainly because someone (JadeLotus) took me under her wing when I first started. Her guidance was priceless and I still count her as a friend.

Have you been a master in the past? What advice would you give to those who have never mentored, but would like to in the future?

I have been a master to two padawans and loved both experiences. I think it's important to find someone with similar writing interests so that both master and paddy will be comfortable working together. Also, it's crucial that you establish what the relationship will involve. Will it include acting as a beta? How much constructive criticism is the paddy comfortable with? I have a tendency to 'mother' my padawans, so I tell them this up front in case they don't want this kind of interaction.

What are some of the pros and cons of the master/padawan relationship?

I think the pros far outweigh the cons.

Pros:

You receive as much as you give.
If everything goes well, you have a new friend.
You get the pleasure of introducing someone to the wonderful world of Star Wars FF.
You get to see things through their eyes. happy

Cons:

The only thing I'd list is time. Make sure you have the time to spend with your padawan. But it is well worth it.

Heya, folks. Haven't posted here as far as I know, but I certainly meet the age requirement whistling I skimmed over and saw some good discussions going, and wondered if I might be able to drop in from time to time (as time allows, of course).

Coolness. I've been feeling rather old lately talking with all these youngin's. I also liked the discussion on Master/Padawan relations. I don't have the time myself to master, but I admire those who do.

Continuing with our series of questions about writing tools, which point of view (POV) do prefer to write/read? Are there any that you don't like?

Jumping right in--I'm a 3rd person devotee. All my posted stories are 3rd person. I have written original fic in both 1st and 2nd POV. 1st POV story was okay, the 2nd POV one reeked. I have only read one 2nd person story I've ever enjoyed, and that was a Harry Potter fic on ff.net called Bungle in the Jungle (I've been in a HP fanfic fetish for the past few months).

As for limited vs. omniscient--lots of good discussion there, and I liked the Stover quote that breaking the rules was perfectly acceptable--so long as you know the rules you're breaking. My fics tend to have limited POVs for dramatic tension and to bring immediacy to the reader. I am having a bit of a problem with my HP/SW cross switching between Ben Skywalker's POV, and that of Luna Lovegood, his romantic interest in the story. But I think when it works, it works well. I try to limit the switches either to whole chapters, or if within the chapter a section break.

This is a great thread. I wish I'd drifted by sooner.

Definitely yes. But you can't impose yourself to other, you can only give what the other is ready to receive. I give my help and advice freely when/whereever I think it will be well received.

Only briefly. My lonely padawan dissapeared as soon as I made the announcement, which doesn't speak very well of me, I guess. worried I guess not everybody wants to be mentored by someone whose first language isn't English, and I haven't met any Spanish native fanfic writers here so far.

I had a wonderful experience as a padawan (I could never thank NanaVader enough for her patience!), both as a writer and as a tf.net user. I think it's very important for new users to have someone to go to for questions of any kind, specially if you are a little shy.

If you feel lead, there is a questionaire on the first page that most of us have copied and pasted, introducing ourselves. It's optional.

Welcome!

Okay!

1) Age--Just under 40 (yeah,I know I'm not THAT old. But sometimes I think it's the mileage more than the years.)

2) How long have you been writing or reading on these boards? 2 ½ years. I lurked about six months prior to that.

3) Favorite genre, saga of SW? Most of my stories are in Beyond the Boards, but I'm more partial to the OT characters. Perhaps I like Post OT but Pre-NJO.

4) Favorite characters and why? I saw Mama Vader's responses at the beginning and I have to agree--I do like Vader. I also like the possibilities of Han's character. I think the post-OT fics really wasted his character's potential.

5) Why has SW always been so special to you? Because of geography, ROTJ was the first movie I got to see opening day. I remember the near religious feeling I had standing in a line that wrapped around the theatre. The joy and thrill of seeing the guys in the authentic Vader and Storm Trooper costumes. I remember ANH premiered on TV leading up to ROTJ and by the time it came, I had hung my entire childhood around those three films. I loved ET, I loved Poltergeist and all the big movies, but nothing just grabbed my like the OT. No matter what the Flannelled One does after, those three movies have permanenty cemented themselves to my soul.

6) Favorite tips or advise for writing. Like what you write first. If you don't like it, chances are others won't either. But if you do like what you write, then it really doesn't matter what anyone else thinks. You've fulfilled your primary goal of creating a vision you wanted to see. On the other side of that, if you ask for concrit, take it for what it is. Nothing is perfect. Every story can by better. A famous author said there is no such thing as a final draft, just a last one.

Thanks!

It was on her fifteenth day in the darkness of the Nirauan cave when Mara Jade awoke to discover a rescuer had finally arrived.
It was not, however, any of the potential rescuers she would have expected.
It was Luke.
