The Bad to the Bone challenge sounds interesting. I haven't written in so long. Life gets in the way of writing
Sorry to hear how the economy has affected you Diane. Hope all goes well for you.
I haven't seen any of the new cartoons, I've been out of Star Wars for awhile. I have a lot of catching up to do, I need to release my inner geekiness
Take care you guys

MsLanna posted: I liked clones from the first page of Hard Contact; they have such potential.
And they are perfect material for an OC writer, too, gar a squad or how many ever, there's enough of them to go around.
Still I think that from what i have seen there is still not enough ab out the clones in the CLONE Wars. *shrug*
I am biased...
Ahsoka, I hope she grows up and gets lost. Her death might be a good push towards the dark side for Anakin, but it would have to be done right. I am doubtful, doing things right in SW...
I'll see.
I'm with you on the Hard Contact thing. Oya!!! I think those books have totally changed the way I look at the clones. I never really thought about them before. That is why I'm digging to write some commando fanfic. It will be set in the timeframe of the new cartoon.

Are you watching the new animated Star Wars series: Clone Wars? Will you write from this timeframe?
I have seen the movie and watched the first three episodes. I've really enjoyed what they are doing with it. We get to see Anakin as a hero and not necessarily a brooding ego. Ahsoka is a nice foil for Anakin, but it cuts down on the Obi-Ani time. It's a kids show, I know.
I've written on drabble for my current thread and have really enjoyed karebear's fics from the movie and beyond.
I may yet attempt more.

I have seen the new Clone Wars movie. Can we say "joke"? It almost seems as if Lucas is staying in this era of his epic because he thinks that's what we want. Doesn't he know we want more stories set in the classic Saga era? He's emphasizing an era that most Star Wars fans don't care one Republic credit about.
I have never written in this era just for the fact that there is no chemistry with the characters here. There are too many. With the Classic era we had a small group that interacted well against each other. The Prequels...too many to have chemistry, and before you say Anakin and Obi Wan, yes they had chemistry..BUT, you already know how their friendship ends, which in effect nullifies their kinship.
Lucas aimed at the kids in the Clone Wars. And that was his downfall which translated into low numbers at the theater.
Ok, I'm done.
I have an idea for the Halloween challenge that is a bit non traditional. More on that later

Sorry that you feel that way Madman007 but that is a huge generalization don't you think. I am sure you can't speak for everyone. I love the Clone Wars era and while you have a point that there is a real need for Classic era stories, I think there is room for both. I am sorry that the Clone Wars movie and tv series isn't your cup of tea but by labeling it a Joke and aimed at Kids you are closing yourself off to some really great story telling. I like to write in all era's and the Clone Wars series just gives more material and more depth for everything you are looking to write. I hope you give the "Kids Cartoon Show" a chance who knows it might grow on you.

No, and no. The Clone Wars cartoon doesn't interest me in the slightest because of the inherent contradictions in it from the movies (i.e., Anakin having a padawan ... which automatically makes him a Master ... yet the Council not giving him Master status in ROTS is highlighted as a major plot thread) and simply because I just don't much care for the prequel era.
Although, to be honest, the only thing currently being published in the Star Wars universe that does interest me is the KOTOR comic. Del Rey lost me as a reader a long time ago, the Cade Skywalker thing doesn't interest me at all (talk about making everything Luke & Co. suffered for turn out to be senseless), and TCW era is just ... I dunno. Uninteresting to me. I miss Luke, and Han, and Leia, and Mara. The real versions of those characters, not the Del Rey versions...
But that's just my opinion and YMMV.

I'm not sure that anakin having a Padawan automatically makes him a Master. Obi-wan takes Anakin as a padawan immediately after he is made a Knight in TPM. I am not sure what sop is and what the wookie says about the Master Padawan relationship but clearly there are exceptions made.
What is the difference between the "real" versions and the Del Rey versions? I have read almost all the books and I don't see the difference between the movie versions and the book versions in fact most of the time I hear carrie fisher delivering the lines or Hamil's calm steady voice as Jedi master.
For anyone reading these comments I am interested in a disscussion and I am not trying to call anyone out or to start a fight. I have notice that this thread has been dropping lately and was hoping to get some kind of discussion going. It is my hope that my attempts are viewed as such.

Does this Ahsoka chick ever refer to him as "Master Skywalker?" Even once? Does anyone refer to him as Master Skywalker since he has a padawan? I haven't watched the cartoon - as I said, the prequel era doesn't really interest me - but it seems like a logical conclusion that a padawan's instructor is automatically a Master. It's made moreso if she survives to reach full Knight-status whenever the series reaches its completion, which causes such a disconnect with ROTS that I can't get interested.
Plus, the animation causes me to cringe.

This is entirely a matter of personal opinion and YMMV. A lot of people are okay with the moral relativism that has creeped into the franchise since Del Rey assumed control of the publishing francise, but I'm not. I'm tired of the Jedi acting like amoral thugs (how is sanctioning an assassination as evidently occurred in this latest book series remotely Jedi-like? Or, for that matter, Luke's effectively backing of that scheme in the NJO that amounts to political manipulation on a galactic scale?), and I'm tired of the books constantly implying that Luke has failed as the Jedi Master (how else do you explain the atrocities that have occurred throughout the book series' because of Jedi falling to the Dark Side willy nilly?)
But obviously, this is simply my personal opinion and is the reason I don't bother with anything Del Rey puts out these days, regardless of the author. (Which is sad, 'cause I kinda want to read that new Matthew Stover book, but I won't....)

Well Ahsoka does refer to him as Master Skywalker but I thought that was more along the lines of Master/Student relationship rather then a ranking such as Jedi Knight, Jedi Master. I think there is room for confusion and in reading the Clone wars Novelazation it starts to add to anakin's resentment of the Council.
I can understand if the Prequel era isn't someone's thing. Yet the CW does offer some unique glimpses at pre-empire thinking and perhaps as you talk about the problems you have with some of the novels it begins to show that the Jedi order is not the shining example of all that is good that some people believe.
Ok that makes more sense in relation to the real vs Del Rey versions. You raise some interesting points. Yeah the direction that some of the books has taken was very very different. I think after the Chewie death LFL said in order to remain successful they have to kill main characters and blur the lines between right and wrong. I don't hold with the idea that Luke is responsible for everything. I really wish they would look beyond the whole Luke Grandmaster thing and start to have the Jedi be responsible for thier own destiny. Even the council seems to wait for Luke to tell them what to do. I do however think that some of the line blurring is more realistic then the white tower appeal of the Jedi. The moral delimia's add depth to the characters.

The fact that Anakin is referred to as Master seems to make my point. If he's not a master, than he should not be referred as such.

I think you misunderstand me. The prequel-era Jedi Order is not supposed to be a "shining example of all that is good." It has been corrupted and complacent, which is why it is ultimately doomed. Luke's order is supposed to be different. He's supposed to have learned from the mistakes of the past (as befits the fairy tale motif that is SW), not repeat them ad nauseum.
Thorn058 posted: I think after the Chewie death LFL said in order to remain successful they have to kill main characters and blur the lines between right and wrong.
Unfortunately, Del Rey has, IMO, taken it to an extreme and now we're getting tragedy for tragedy's sake. Mara's utterly contrived and completely pathetic death served no purpose other than showing how "Rape the Dog" Evil (TM) Jacen had become. Anakin Solo's death was utterly ridiculous - he was, IMO, the only interesting Solo kid and they killed him off.
Thorn058 posted: I don't hold with the idea that Luke is responsible for everything.
All of the problems the EU Jedi have come back to him whether one wants to give him a pass or not. The responsibility ultimately is his since he is the man in charge, and everything the Jedi do reflects back on him.
Thorn058 posted: I do however think that some of the line blurring is more realistic then the white tower appeal of the Jedi. The moral delimia's add depth to the characters.
Moral dilemmas are one thing, but the direction they've taken with the franchise (the moral relativism) simply does not interest me. Real life sucks enough without the so-called heroes acting like utter pieces of garbage. I want to root for them, not wish I could hit a magic Reset Button and take the entire franchise back to immediately after The Last Command.

I wsn't suggesting that you thought the Prequel era Jedi were Shining examples of all that is good. That seems to be the current trend unfortunately. The Jedi-Love as I call it is really getting out of control. If you visit the Clone Wars board it is staggering what ome fans want. I mean to me the Clone wars is first and foremost about the Clones and people are actually suggesting leaving them out of the story and centering it on more Jedi. They in essensce want to see Tales of the Jedi or Fall of the Jedi, and to me the real stories are the ones in the relationship between this slave army that is created for the Jedi and how they deal with that moral debate. They good of the republic over the good of it's citizens. Then there are the ones who have watched the GT microseries and they want those type of Jedi, the type where Mace Windu wipes out thouands and thousands of SBD's with a wave of the hand. It gets to be too much.
The master title i think you have to reconsider because Ventress calls Dooku Master and he is not a Sith master. So I think until we get a definitive yes or no on what constitute a master I think it is a term of respect for a student for thier trainers. Just my opinion.Lol alot of my opinion in this.
Senseless deaths I just did not get. Ok the death of Chewie maybe it was necessary to advance certain characters beyond the continueous cycle they seem to be stuck in. Yet the rest of them I don't know what they were thinking. Perhaps sacrifice is the ultimate test of a Jedi but some of thes character deaths are just bad, badly written, badly concieved, badly executed.
At what point does Luke cease to be responsible for the order? I mena he refounded it and gave it some original focus but at what point do they move beyond that and have the Jedi deciding for themselves about what to do. I would like to see them begin to address that type of story line. One where Luke fades from the forefront and others step forward and lead.

But he was a Jedi Master, so the title is still accurate.
Thorn058 posted: At what point does Luke cease to be responsible for the order?
Not for a very long time. Perhaps even not until long after his death. By the time Luke has recreated the Order, he's moved beyond just being a farmboy-turned-pilot-turned-Jedi and has become a Legend. Everything he does or the Jedi do afterward is going to be held up against this fact. Legends don't follow the same rules as normal, mortal men (even if the Legend in question knows otherwise.)
Honestly, it doesn't become more than "Luke Skywalker's Jedi Order" until at least two generations or so after his death ... but, based on the Legacy comics, it collapses once more, furthering enhancing the "Luke is a failure" nonsense proliferated by the current franchise...
But again, that's JMHO...

Ahsoka would refer to Anakin as Master Skywalker because he was her master. He isn't a master until he either has a Padawan that becomes a knight or does something that shows mastery.
As for the Clone Wars cartoons, I'm really not interested in the clones. Didn't like any of the Fetts, either in the movies or the books. To me, they are a side issue. Instead I do prefer that they focus on the Jedi. After all, the movies are really about the Jedi and how they fell and were reborn when Luke got Anakin to return to the light. The last movie is called 'Return of the Jedi' after all, not 'Boba Fett's dive into the Sarlacc pit'.
Doesn't mean that the Jedi were saintly or that they always did the right thing. I prefer my Jedi with lots of flaws but the clones just aren't interesting, to me. How the mighty fall is.

Very true. I am far more interested in seeing Jedi than clones. However, I love backstory for the characters I am interested in and the clones are a major part of the backstory for the Jedi purge - therein lies a huge helping of angst for Obi-Wan. It's very interesting for me to know that the Jedi saw the clones as individuals in the Force. Even if I don't use any of the backstory in what I'm writing, knowing what it is makes the writing go much better.
And I'm also very interested in the hero story for Anakin. When Obi-Wan says that Anakin was a good friend in ANH, Guiness put a lot of feeling into the line, but it still means a lot more when you actually get to see what they did together (and not just the angry, hormonal teenager in AOTC and the pre-Sith in ROTS).
And I like pointless droid banter; it's just a part of Star Wars for me.
