Great job with the Quote-fest game! applause

We kept the game going an entire week without fail! Bravo! So let's get down to some discussion.

New Discussion Question 4-21-08

Part 1: What aspect of the SW movies (PT or OT)makes you uncomfortable?

Now we all cringe when we see Luke and Leia kissing so that's a given, but what else is hard to watch?

Part 2: If you are an EU reader, what aspect of the novels made you uncomfortable?

Don't forget:

There is still time to respond to the current challenge here in the Over 30 club:

SPRING CHALLENGE APRIL/MAY 2008

Springtime is all about new growth, birth and...re-seeding the yard. For this challenge, write a vignette (or short story if you desire) with a baby featrued. It can be AU or canon. The baby can be OC or canon.

But, please...NO TWINS.

Your response must include the following phrases:

1. goochee goochee goo.

2. nice shot.

3. must take after your side of the family.

Remember to post a link here and to put Over '30 Spring challenge' in the header.

Actually, I laugh when I see that now. Before ROTJ, I was happy that Luke finally got a kiss, a real kiss - from a woman no less instead of a dream. tongue

Pretty much the only thing that makes me uncomfortable is the emolation scene with Anakin being burned alive. That still makes me cringe. It's really too graphic for me.

Part 2: If you are an EU reader, what aspect of the novels made you uncomfortable?

Taking characters and completely turning them into something they never were. OOC.

I also wasn't happy when they killed off Anakin Solo. Chewie I didn't mind because he hadn't really been pivotal in any of the dialogue/ action and he was old and had had an exciting life. AS was the golden boy and then they yanked him out of the universe and killed him off, a young kid who hadn't really experienced life. shame_on_you

I find that the movies are pretty tame in general (not a lot of gratuitous violence after all), but as RotS is the darkest, there are some in it that are more difficult than others. If I had to pick one, the stretch of scenes where the Jedi are murdered by their clone troops would probably be my choice, as well as the scene where the young Padawan is killed by the clones outside the Jedi temple.

Part 2: If you are an EU reader, what aspect of the novels made you uncomfortable?

I will only comment on the ones I have read and not bore you with exactly what I think about EU in general, especially post VotF. peace

I echo dianethx's comments about the characters being OOC - I found that to be true even in some of the earlier EU novels and definitely in what I have read of the later. But from my earliest reading, I remember thinking 'what is with this super-weapon one-upmanship?' I mean, we had a space station that could destroy a planet, but that wasn't good enough so we had to create a weapon to destroy a solar system, not to mention some of the other 'gems' which came along later. Heck, what about something to destroy the galaxy, or better yet, let's just do in the entire universe! devil

I mean, I understand the need for our heroes to continue to have challenges (let's face it - the publishers want to milk this cow for all it's worth) but at some point it starts to get old and campy.

And that's my two minute rant! tongue

Part 1: What aspect of the SW movies (PT or OT)makes you uncomfortable?

For the OT, I'm still too chicken to watch the scene with Luke and the Visionary Vader during the Dagobah cave duel. When Vader is beheaded, I know the part I hate the most is coming up: Luke's face in the helmet. It's stupid, I know. But I *hate* that image.

The Luke/Vader duel on Bespin is another moment where I sort of just check out mentally because it's too much to watch. Hand gets cut off...the Daddy revelation...yeah, I'm not going to be present and accounted until the end of the movie.

Part 2: If you are an EU reader, what aspect of the novels made you uncomfortable?

When I read the EU, I was bothered by the Luke/Mara pairing. I won't go into detail here (I've spilled my reasons elsewhere).

I didn't like the idea of Leia being portrayed as so fickle and snotty that she would dump Han to run off with Space Fabio. I don't care if she was supposedly doing it to help the Alderaani refugees or not. It just was not characteristic of the Leia I saw in the movies.

I also was bothered by Han kidnapping Leia just to get her to love him again. Even though Leia was acting ridiculous, taking a woman hostage is not romantic.

Part 1: What aspect of the SW movies (PT or OT)makes you uncomfortable?

I still feel my skin crawl when I see Leia up on that dias next to Jabba with his 'tail' caressing her. *shudder* Ick! Ick! Ick! It gets to me everytime.

The other scene that's hard for me to watch is when Anakin comes into the room of younglings in the temple in ROTS.

"Master Skywalker, there are too many of them. What should we do?" worried Then he zips out his lightsaber and the poor youngling startles. ACK!!! It always brings tears to my eyes. I can still barely watch it.

Part 2: If you are an EU reader, what aspect of the novels made you uncomfortable?

I had a lot of difficulty with the torture scenes in NJO "Traitor." It's very hard for me to read about the brutality involved with the Embrace of Pain and what Jacen went through. As such, you can imagine my HORROR when in one of the LOTF novels, they had Ben Skywalker in it.

Very emotional for me when Luke walks in and sees his son strapped into the torture device.

Part 1: What aspect of the SW movies (PT or OT)makes you uncomfortable?

I always felt so sorry for Oola. I can only imagine that poor girl getting eaten by the Rancor.

But what honestly gives me the heebidy-jeebidies every time is that brief part where Grievous and Obi-Wan are fighting on Utapau, and Grievous starts scuttling around like some kind of nasty metal spider. Yuck.

Part 2: If you are an EU reader, what aspect of the novels made you uncomfortable?

I was never, ever comfortable with Luke and Cighal's decision in the Dark Nest Trilogy to inflict pain on (I believe it was) Tahiri in order to see if the other Joiners could feel it, too. That's too close to intentional torture for me, especially for Luke. It was very out of character.

YES! I don't know what it is about that image but it really gives me the shivers!

Part 1: What aspect of the SW movies (PT or OT)makes you uncomfortable?

I can't honestly say that anything in the movies makes me real uncomfortable. If I had to pick something, I guess it would be Anakin burning alive. I suppose the fact that I know it's just stage make-up on him takes away any 'yuck' factor for me. Those 'making of' specials tend to erase any mystery.

Part 2: If you are an EU reader, what aspect of the novels made you uncomfortable?

If we're talking about parts that I just can't bear to reread, it would be all the hand-holding and sugary-sweet scenes with Luke and Callista in Darksaber. I just can't picture Luke being that mushy with anyone, especially in front of other people. We don't see him and Mara acting like that, even though it's obvious they're in love.

It was on her fifteenth day in the darkness of the Nirauan cave when Mara Jade awoke to discover a rescuer had finally arrived.
It was not, however, any of the potential rescuers she would have expected.
It was Luke.
