Welcome to Essential Guide to Original Characters! Here it's one stop shopping for all of your Original Character needs. This thread will serve both as an index and a resource thread for stories featuring Original Characters or “OCs”, and hopefully many other things OC related.
The thread will endeavor to create an environment where stories featuring Original Characters can garner some the spotlight from their canon co-inhabitants in George Lucas’ Universe. If you're the creator of
original characters
that you think could do a better job of handling the day-to-day excitement of the Galaxy Far, Far Away; or if you have a story itching to get out, that you think the Skywalkers just don’t have time to handle... and you can create them, maybe you can hire... the

To make it easier when gathering the story data from posts or PMs please submit in the following form only, including a broken link:

Summary:
For interest of space (even though there seems plenty), it’s not necessary to include the other title bar regulars. Most of that info can be reworded into the summary.
- For a story to qualify inclusion in the index here,
the main character(s) must be an Original Character
. In other words, the main plotline must revolve around said Original Character(s) for it to be included here. Having canon and EU characters is permissible; but they should not be the main focal point of the story. Stories from the previous indices that could be considered borderline OC-centric will be included here, but submissions that don’t seem to contain an Original Character as the focal point will be judged for inclusion on a case-by-case basis.
For Example
:
Say your fic contains Obi-Wan leading a motley team of
Jedi OCs
storming into a Separatist detention center,
the story features Obi-Wan
, and would therefore NOT be considered for inclusion in this index.
If you’re unsure whether your story is eligible, please feel free to PM the
OCDatabaseSock
; include a brief synopsis and your story's link. It will be reviewed to determine if it is eligible. The host reserves the right to make the final determination if is to be considered an OC story. However, if you feel the host may have discounted your story haphazardly; PM me and we can discuss. It could be just a simple case of oversight on my part.
Readers, while perusing the index; if you happen to check out one of the older, “locked” fics, don’t just read it and forget it. It might be a good idea to PM the author an "R&R" just to show them some appreciation. If the author no longer seems to be active here on the boards, feel free to post an "R&R" here in the thread (keep it positive) and include the story's title, author, and a link (it’ll save interested parties the time of seeking it out in the index).

Is it aboard their rundown freighter? A death dealing space station? An underwater city? A place where it's rough and coarse and gets everywhere?!?! Most people feel your home is a reflection of the person you are... agreed? No? To bad, run with it.

2009 The Essential OC Quarterly Challenges
Official Challenge Rules: Updated 8/21/08
1) These challenges are open to everyone! Just write a story in response and submit it by PM by the designated due date and you’re entered. The only stories accepted are written using only OCs (unless a specific challenge indicates otherwise).
2) Approximately every 3 months there will be a "Challenge Theme" posted in this thread, which will also be added to this post. Authors will have approximately 10 weeks**, with a specified due date, to write a story based on that theme. You can write in any era; Before, Saga, or Beyond. All "Themes" are open to interpretation.
The quarters will be nicknamed by the season:
Spring Challenge
will run from April 1st through June 30th.
The Summer Challenge
will run from July 1st through September 30th.
Autumn Challenge
will run from October 1st through December 31st.
Winter Challenge
will run from January 1st through March 31st.
3)
NO ENTRY FICS/LINKS ARE TO BE POSTED IN THE THREAD. Authors are required to PM me with the link to their story using the following format:

That's all folks! No other info needed.
The submission period will run from the 1st of the month (when the new challenge is posted) until midnight board time on the due date, roughly 10 weeks**. Once the submission window closes, I will post the entries with links to that challenge's submissions for voting.
Why this rule?
Hopefully it will keep things running smoother and less cluttered in the thread, which is also doubling (or tripling as it were) as an OC index/OC discussion/OC Story of the Month thread. I will add a disclaimer/reminder to the posting of each new challenge.
4) The voting period will run for roughly 10 days - 12 days**, until midnight board time of the voting cut off date; this way everyone has a chance to read all the entries. Anytime during this period you can PM me to cast your vote.
Please, do not post your vote in the thread
, it won't be counted and it would be considered very unseemly. During this period I will be keeping track of the votes received, and at the end of the voting period, I'll announce the winner/co-winners (as sometimes tends to be the case). In the event there is a tie, the tied highest vote getters will be announced as co-winners, as this option will tend to keep the challenges moving forward.
-4b) The Host reserves the right to participate in a Challenge; but my story will NOT be eligible for the voting round, nor will I be voting with everyone else.
-4c) Although there never seemed to be an issue in the past; as with the Fanfic Awards, you
cannot vote for your own fic
. Please, try to find someone else's you like, rather than voting for your own.
-4d) Although I don’t think this will be an issue either, and it isn’t a requirement;
it is only good sportsmanship that if you submit an entry, that you at least try to read & respond to the other participants’ entries as well
.
5) The winner will have earned the opportunity to design the next challenge! The winning author will have until the final day of the month to decide upon a theme, then once he/she does, they’ll PM it to me and I'll have it posted on the 1st of the following quarter as the next challenge. Of course, the winner is certainly welcome to participate in the next challenge as well. If a winner wins 2 consecutive months in a row, they will still be allowed to participate in the next challenge, but will be ineligible for voting for that challenge only.
Note:
Failing to PM the OCDatabaseSock with a new challenge by the winner will result in me having to come up with a new Challenge on my own, and said winner will thus be subjected to my involuntarily whining over having to do so. (Offer not valid in Texas, Arizona or New Mexico)
In the event of co-winners, all winners will be allowed to submit a challenge of their own, and entrants may choose from which topic they would like to write and submit. Of course if the co-winners would like to brainstorm a single topic, they are more than welcome to do so.
6) Every competitor is to be treated with utmost respect. Flaming WILL NOT BE TOLERATED! (Remember the TOS I talked about earlier in this thread?)

Rules are subject to change if needed as the Challenges rolls on...in which case they shall be updated accordingly.

has put together quite the event. In an effort to bring together the two creative forces of TF.N, we're giving OC Authors and Artists the opportunity to "Bring their Characters to Life"!
There will be a sign-up list for interested parties located for writers in this thread and another for artists in their designated thread over in fan fic. At the end of the sign-up period you will be randomly paired with an author and your match will be sent to you via PM. Here's where the creative process begins! It's now up to you and your match to swap ideas and create a piece of artwork or a story based on the original characters you have to work with.Fan Artists are currently being given the opportunity to sign-up for this event

The artists will be able to post links/thumbnails over on the FanArt Thread, and I'll check over there regularly and post a notice anytime that occurs. Authors will post their creations in the appropriate era, and can post a link here in this thread, so keep a look out.

The "Where's Waldo" of the OC world!
Now, welcome to the namesake of this thread – the Original Characters Database!
Just like there are canon characters that are more popular than others, the same goes for
OCs, so now there’s a place for you to find all your favorite Original Characters.
You are allowed to submit a character that is involved in both OC-centric fics,
and fics featuring canon characters; provided the OC is a major character
in that canon character’s story. (In other words, they can’t have a “walk-on” role)
Unlike the story section of the thread, where I’ve searched out some of the stories;
this section is strictly by submission only. Authors with characters
involved in a series, or are reoccurring characters in other various
OC stories will be allowed for submission. I will limit authors to submit
up to five of their favorite OCs using the following information below:

The character's name will be the link. Needless to say, please make sure that all links
lead to "appropriate" matter, or they will not be included.

listed in alphabetical order, without being divided up into eras.
If the list becomes longer and unmanagable, I may re-organize this section of the thread.
