Welcome to the Third (okay, technically fourth) Edition of the Original Character Index/Database. One stop shopping for all your Original Character needs! This thread will serve both as an index and a resource thread for stories featuring Original Characters or “OCs”, and hopefully many other things OC related.
This thread will endeavor to create an environment where stories featuring Original Characters can share in the spotlight with their canon co-inhabitants of George Lucas’ Universe. If you're the creator of original characters that you think could do a better job of handling the day-to-day excitement of the Galaxy Far, Far Away; or if you have a story itching to get out, that you think the Skywalkers just don’t have time to handle... and you can create them, maybe you can hire... the OC-Team. *rat-a-tat-a-tat*
- As you explore this thread, you’ll find that this version combines all previous indices morphing and replacing them in hopes to form a more thorough and comprehensive Original Character Story Index.
- In addition, the feature of an OC Story of the Month will resume here as well, (hopefully) including interviews with each respective STOM’s author.
- This thread will also play host to quarterly OC writing challenges.
- Participation and general discussion regarding original characters and OC stories is strongly encouraged, and some socializing (as long as it is not abused) will also be accepted. Remember to be open minded, and to treat everyone's opinions with respect… or so help me, I will turn this car around.
(In other words, please keep in mind The JCF Terms of Service)
- If you have any thoughts or ideas on how to improve upon this thread, or would like to submit a story for indexing; please feel free to PM the OCDatabaseSock .
The New Essential Guide to Original Characters is brought to you by the number "8", and the letter "C", as well as Corellian_Ale. (If you have any concerns or questions regarding this thread…blame him, I sure will.)
Just don't blame the thread's co-host: Commander-DWH
A heart felt thanks to DVeditor, and the sock’s icon designer Your_Worshipfullness for the cool OC Index Icon. The icon is derived from Ralph McQuarrie’s rendition of the then unknown characters, within the original script of Star Wars: A New Hope. Click Here to view a larger image.
Viva La OC Revolucíon!!!
Guidelines for Submitting Stories to be included in The Index:
To make it easier when gathering the story data from posts or PMs please headline your submission with the following information including a broken link (feel free to cut & paste the example below) to your story:
{link= STORY URL]YOUR STORY TITLE HERE [/link]
Author(s):
Summary:
You will find the Index portion to be listed by Era in subsequent posts. Each Era will be further broken down into story titles by alphabetical order. This method will present a bigger sense of variety than listing fics by author. It's all an illusion...
While I will try to scour the boards on a regular basis for OC stories to include, I may miss some; actually I know I’ll miss most. Especially if the title bar, or summary contains something similar to the following: A/P & OCs or Boba Fett, & OCs. I'll likely assume the story doesn’t actually focus on the Original Characters at all, and skip it entirely.
- For a story to qualify inclusion in the index here, there must be an Original Character that is the dominant character in the story. In other words, the main plotline revolves around said Original Character for it to be included here. Having canon and EU characters is permissible; but they should not be the main focal point of the story. Stories from the previous indices that could be considered borderline OC-centric will be included here, but submissions that don’t seem to contain an Original Character as the focal point will be judged for inclusion on a case-by-case basis.
For Example:
Say your fic contains Obi-Wan leading a motley team of minor Jedi OCs storming into a Separatist detention center, the story would likely feature Obi-Wan, and would therefore probably be better off being added to the Obi-Wan Index.
However, if your fic is about an OC snub-fighter pilot trying to live up to the reputation set previously in Rogue Squadron, by say, her Commanding Officer, Tycho Celchu...yours is more than likely to be a OC fic.
Determining the difference is treading on a fine line, so if you’re unsure either way, please feel free to PM the OCDatabaseSock and include your story's link, and it can be looked over to help make the distinction.
The host reserves the right to make the final distinction on whether a fic is to be considered an OC fic, but I also don’t want to exclude anyone haphazardly; so if you feel that I have not included your fic in error; PM me and we can discuss it openly. It could be just a simple case of oversight on my part. (Stranger things have happened).
- For interest of space (even though there seems plenty), it’s not necessary to include the other title bar regulars: Era/Timeframe (the indexer listing them by Era is sufficient), the Characters: there's no need, just say OCs! (particularly if you have a large cast of characters); and the A/N (most of which really can be added to the summary). Certain things can be shortened and included in the summary itself if you feel it’s needed.
Keep in mind the index is a chance for OC authors to receive free advertisement, so you’ll want to “beef up” your summary with as much info as possible to make your fic stand out.
If you had a story that was part of the previous indexes, and notice it’s not within this index, and it was an entry to the OC Dueling Circle; please check below for the Dueling Circle specific index section, if it is not there either; PM me the info and I’ll remedy the situation.
While you’re browsing the index list, if you do happen to find a broken link or a link that takes you to the wrong location, please PM me with the era and story title. Any stories that I found had a broken link, I did not include. If you’re an author of a story that wasn’t transferred over to this index please PM me a link, and I’ll make sure to input the missing story and info.
Readers, while perusing the index; if you happen to check out one of the older, “locked” fics, don’t just read it and forget it. It might be a good idea to PM the author an "R&R" just to show them some appreciation. If the author no longer seems to be active here on the boards, feel free to post an "R&R" here in the thread (keep it positive) and include the story's title, author, and a link (it’ll save interested parties the time of seeking it out in the index).
But no fic pimping for friends, please. (You know what I mean)
Please, be sure to check out these other great OC-centric Threads all of your OC Shopping needs:
(if you have an OC related thread, and would like it added to this list; please PM the sock and we'll add it ASAP)

Let’s get a little insight to some of your favorite characters.
Describe one of your OC’s favorite places to vacation, or get detailed on some place they would really like to travel to on holiday. Feel free to use actual canonical references, or create your own – please, no earth locales.
Give reasons on why him/her loved visiting, or is itching to travel to this place(s). Describe what attracts them to it; what makes it so alluring to them. Be as lavish as your imagination will let you, or TOS, whichever comes first.

The Essential OC Quarterly Challenge
Official Challenge Rules: Updated 8/21/08
1) The only stories accepted are written using only OCs (unless a specific challenge indicates otherwise).
2) Approximately every 3 months there will be a "Challenge Theme" posted in this thread, which will also be added to this post. Authors will have approximately 10 weeks**, with a specified due date, to write a story based on that theme. You can write in any era; Before, Saga, or Beyond. All "Themes" are open to interpretation.
The quarters will be nicknamed by the season:
The Fall Challenge will run from Sept 1st through November 30th.
The Winter Challenge will run from December 1st through the end of February (28th or 29th)
The Spring Challenge will run from March 1st through May 31st
The Summer Challenge will run from June 1st through August 31st
2b) These challenges are open to everyone! Just write a story in response and submit it by PM by the designated due date and you’re entered.
3) NO ENTRY FICS/LINKS ARE TO BE POSTED IN THE THREAD. Competitors are required to PM me with the link to their story . Using the following format:
{YOUR LINK HERE] YOUR STORY[/link]
That's all folks! No other info needed.
The submission period will run from the 1st of the month (when the new challenge is posted) until midnight board time on the due date, roughly 10 weeks**. Once the submission window closes, I will post the entries with links to that challenge's submissions for voting. Why this rule? Hopefully it will keep things running smoother and less cluttered in the thread, which is also doubling (or tripling as it were) as an OC index/OC discussion/OC Story of the Month thread. I will add a disclaimer/reminder to the posting of each new challenge.
4) The voting period will run for roughly 10 days**, until midnight board time of the voting cut off date; this way everyone has a chance to read all the entries. Anytime during this period you can PM me to cast your vote. Please, do not post your vote in the thread , it won't be counted and it would be considered very unseemly. During this period I will be keeping track of the votes received, and at the end of the voting period, I'll announce the winner/co-winners (as sometimes tends to be the case). In the event there is a tie, the tied highest vote getters will be announced as co-winners, as this option will tend to keep the challenges moving forward.
-4b) I reserve the right to participate in a Challenge; but my story will NOT be eligible for the voting round, nor will I be voting with everyone else.
-4c) Although there never seemed to be an issue in the past; as with the Fanfic Awards, you cannot vote for your own fic. Please, try to find someone else's you like, rather than voting for your own.
-4d) Although I don’t think this will be an issue either, and it isn’t a requirement; it is only good sportsmanship that if you submit an entry, that you at least try to read & respond to the other participants’ entries as well.
5) What will I win Bob? Here for your reading pleasure, our competitors shall compete for the great honor of the No-Prize! Perhaps a Golden Jar-Jar if you’d like, or how about a walk-on role in the upcoming Star Wars T.V. series?
Nah…
Seriously, you the winner will have earned the opportunity to design the next challenge!
I'll give the winner until the final day of the month to decide upon a theme, then once he/she does, they’ll PM it to me and I'll have it posted on the 1st of the following month as the next challenge. Of course, the winner is certainly welcome to participate in their own challenge.
Note: Failing to PM the OCDatabaseSock with a new challenge by the winner will result in me having to come up with a new Challenge on my own, and said winner will thus be subjected to my involuntarily whining over having to do so. (Offer not valid in Texas, Arizona or New Mexico)
In the event of co-winners, all winners will be allowed to submit a challenge of their own, and entrants may choose from which topic they would like to write and submit. Of course if the co-winners would like to brainstorm a single topic, they are more than welcome to do so.
6) Every competitor is to be treated with utmost respect. Flaming WILL NOT BE TOLERATED! (Remember the TOS I talked about earlier in this thread?)
**The submission, and voting rounds will be altered as necessary due to the month of February.
Rules are subject to change if needed as the Challenges rolls on...in which case they shall be updated accordingly.
Remember the important thing is to have fun and write your revolutionary hearts out!

The OC Monthly Challenge Submissions - 2008
Challenge #18 - Two Challenges for the Price of One! (August 2008)
"Fish Out of Water"
(submitted by Thumper09)
Many characters have a place where they feel comfortable, whether it be a job, a location, a social situation, etc. Take your character out of their comfort zone and put them somewhere totally alien or unknown to them, and let us see what happens. Is your underworld mercenary forced into a "Mommy and Me" preschool class? Does your Mon Cal take a vacation on Tatooine?
-or-
The Rashomon
(submitted by Darth_Manion)
Marge: Come on, Homer. Japan will be fun! You liked "Rashomon".
Homer: That's not how I remember it!
For this challenge, within your story, the characters must tell another story multiple times - each time from their separate perspectives, the way they remember it. A technique named for the 1950 Japanese film "Rashomon", but later used in countless other fiction mediums, a trope especially popular in TV. Personally, I find it's a great way to get inside your character's heads to see exactly how they view the world and others around them. It can also be downright hilarious. (And if I may recall something myself, I think Luton already did a story like this a while back. Check it out. It's gud riting.)
Please submit links to you entries via PM by August 20th!
Challenge #17 (June 2008)
You can't bring me down!
(Submitted by MsLanna)
Let your character be happy and satisfied for a change. Then, make the worst happen, but, as the challenge states, for whichever reasons it does not bring him down. He's still happy after all is said and done.
We can't bring them down, but it won't be for lack of trying.

Please cast your votes by PM only to the OC Sock by July 27th!!!
Challenge #16 (May 2008)
Appreciate Your Original Characters!
(submitted by JinngerBread)
The original characters tired of being the subject of constant abuse, skeptism and outright wariness are refusing to work without demonstrative changes. This month's exercise is brought to you by the Mush Association Guild as part of a settlement between the authors and their creations.
We have labored intensively for this change and we think it will reflect positively on all parties involved.
We all have those moments of quietness, downtime, reflectiveness where we appreciate the small things. A hug, a gentle look, something mushy and sweet to make us go "awwww" and yet not such that we collapse from groan inducing sweetness.

Challenge #15- Two Challenges for the Price of One! (April 2008)
Fun With Gender Roles
(submitted by kecen)
I was reading the Essential Guide to Alien Species and read the entry about how H'mnenthe females were "protected". It rank of necessary sexism to keep the species going, and of most of the songs by Nightwish.
The challenge: Write a story involving two Nonhumans (must not be purely cosmetic, must not be Near-Humans unless their culture is very unique) taking a vacation to H'mnente (or occupying it as members of the military) or another planet where the native species is known for its gender dimorphism (Ryloth for example). It must deal with gender roles in both the occupying species and the native species. Bonus if you mention a story of tragic lovers. Bonus if the characters are Yuuzhan Vong (you know you want to!).
An Exercise in Futility
(submitted by Darth_Manion)
Have you ever worked really, really hard for something? Like, harder than you've ever worked for anything? And then, at the last second, find out that the whole thing was just a sham or a cruel cosmic joke, and then your ego is crushed like a moldy old gingerbread man left over from last year's Christmas tossed on a Los Angeles freeway?
Well, if you haven't, then consider this your opportunity to live vicariously through your OC and experience some good, old-fashioned, soul-crushing defeat. Maybe some precious artifact that they've been searching the galaxy for all their life ends up being stolen by their nemesis at the last second. Or maybe they'll find out that the villain they've been trying to get after all these years just died choking on his own bile. Or perhaps they discover that the answer to life, the universe, and everything is actually the number 42. Whatever the case, the end of your story must be the universe's biggest anti-climax. Make us feel the hero's pain, disappointment, and utter despair as he discovers that sea monkeys are really only brine shrimp.

The Essential OC Monthly Challenge Submissions
Challenge #14 (March 2008)
"Procrastinating, Exploding Romance!"
(submitted by Jade_Max)
Well, ya'll wanted something to do with explosions and procrastination to go with your romance so this is inspired by the scene in Pirates of the Caribbean III when our hero and his lady are married in the middle of the pirate ship battle:
The Challenge:
Write a romantic vignette about a procrastinating OC who "gets the girl". (gender is up to the author)
- a battle of some kind
- two characters with the same love interest, one procrastinating, the other forging ahead
- A scene where the procrastinator waits until the last possible minute to proclaim their interest; the context of that is up to the author
Conditions:
1 - No one may die or be mortally injured
2 - Humor is acceptable and encouraged
3 - There is to be some expression of deeper feeling by each character involved that isn't cliché
4 - The OC who waited, is the OC who eventually wins
Entries:

Challenge # 13 (February 2008)
"Mythbusting the Tortoise"
(Submitted by Meredith_Kenobi)
I'm sure we've all heard the Aesop fable, 'The Tortoise and the Hare'.
Now, when I was a kid - 4, 5, 6, somewhere around that age - I really took that fable way too literally. My best friend who lived next-door was a little older than I was, and he always beat me at everything. So when I heard the story 'The Tortoise and the Hare', I really took it to heart. I thought, 'man, with awesome knowledge like this, I can finally beat him in a race!'
Next day I set a bet: he was to be the hare, and I was to be the tortoise. The stakes? A shiny new dime I had found on the ground. I was going to jog or walk to the finish line, and my friend was to go as fast as he liked. Slow and steady wins the race, right? Wrong. Needles to say, I lost that race and was out of 10 whole cents.
Why, you ask, am I rambling on about my stupidity as a young child instead of giving you a challenge? Have patience, I'm getting to it.
The challenge: Your OC must prove the moral, 'slow and steady wins the race', wrong.
The Deadline: Sunday, February 24 - Midnight
Challenge # 12 (January 2008)
"OCs are smarter than Sisyphus"
(Submitted by MsLanna)
You know this guy, Sisyphus, who had to roll the rock up over the hill? But just before he reached the top, the rock would roll down and he'd have to start all over.
Now, had he been clever, he would after, let's say a million tries? - laid aside the stone, grabbed a shovel and cleared away the top of the hill. Or even cleared away the whole hill. It would have been faster, wouldn't it?
So let your OC face a seemingly impossible task that then is solved by tricky thinking.

"Hero worship!"
Everyone looks up to someone, and your OC gets the chance to take a closer look at his/her hero. Does the hero measure up? Does your OC notice if s/he doesn't? Does your OC turn into a creepy stalker? Inquiring minds want to know.

"A Matter of Trust"
Your OC must trust someone with something of importance: information, an item, a duty, him/herself, etc. Or turn it around: your OC is entrusted with something important. Show us what happens. Does the truster willingly place their confidence in the trustee, and does the trustee turn out to be reliable?
Symphonic Sedition by Commander-DWH
Challenge #9 (October 2007)
(submitted by Meredith_Kenobi)
When you’re a child anything can make you happy: ice cream, a trip to the grocery store, running with scissors.
For adults it’s a bit more complicated. With stress and worries beating down on you, it takes something really exciting to cause that happy, giddy, lighter-than-air, run around and break stuff happiness.
So lock up the good china, and give your adult OC something to smile about.

Kids Are OC's Too...
(submitted by Thumper09)
We all have to (physically) grow up sometime, and every adult OC was once a child OC. Show us a memorable event from an adult OC's childhood. What made it memorable, either for that same character or for someone else? Was it happy, sad or something else entirely? Did it shape their adult life in any way?

More Than Meets The Eye...
(submitted by Luton_Plunder)
Your OC is about to make a shocking discovery. The object/person/droid they have seen everyday for years is going to turn out to be something very different from first impressions. Is their fiance actually an underworld hitman? Is their hairy, burly partner in crime really a ballet dancer? Is their airspeeder really a 40-foot robot?
Whatever the case may be, will your OC like this sudden change...or will they hate it?

WAR! What is it Good For?
(submitted by whiskers)

(submitted by Rau_Fang)

Out of the Frying Pan

Original Character Mine
(submitted by Onoto)
What happens when OCs are trapped together? Between 2 – 4 OCs must be isolated from everyone else, though for how long is entirely up to you. At least 2 of the characters must dislike one other. It does not have to be a life or death scenario, though that is most certainly acceptable, as are all results of the captivity, happy or otherwise.
This challenge was inspired by Barry B. Longyear’s science fiction classic Enemy Mine.
Please PM me your entry's link by the due date of April 18th

Between a Rock and a Hard Place
(submitted by BigE)
Create a scenario that puts one or more of your OC characters into a situation in which a choice must be made between two options. The options are mutually exclusive, and either choice would produce an undesirable outcome for the OC(s).
Inspired by the ‘choose who dies’ scenario employed in both Batman Forever and Spider-Man, but this particular challenge is broad enough to allow varying levels of drama, and the type of choice to be made. (i.e. It doesn’t necessarily have to be life-or-death!)

Challenge # 1 (January 2007)
The First Essential OC Challenge also resulted in a tie! So to the winner(s) goes the spoils, and to future winners, two new topics to choose from:
1- To Love and Be Loved in Return--
Your OC works up the courage to tell the object of his/her affection those three oh so difficult to say words and receives no response. How does your OC react?
(submitted by emeraldshadow)
2- "Without friends no one would choose to live, though he had all other goods." -Aristotle, Nichomachean Ethics
Base your OC fic on the quote above. You don't have to include the quote in your fic, just sorta’ work around it. You can make it angst, mush, etc -- that's up to you.
