Linux... would this character happen to be a penguin, or anything like one?
Sorry, couldn't resist. Linux is a fantastic operating system. Off-the-wall and a little quirky, if you will.
That's it! Not the penguin, though that pic is hysterical. I needed a name for his particular character and that just popped into my head. Only after did I realize that it was an operating system, and, well, his whole personality (and even the rest of his family) formed around that.

I must be entering a season where my OCs are finally demanding attention (inspiration is complying) and the cannon characters are waining.
But this recent discussion about music has my stumped. Everyone seems to have such ready made answers. I'd have to think long and hard to come up with songs for my characters.
However, there a song that has inspired the romance between my two Jedi initiate OCs Lens Eli and Kayla Bix: Better When We're Together by Jack Johnson.
His easy going to delivery fits amazingly well with my laid back image of Lens.
There. I guess I did it.

Jarom Aikia would listen to a lot of big band music--everything's very clear-cut values-wise in those songs. He'd have a playlist of Mozart, Mendelssohn, Beethoven and Tchaikovsky for when he has to appear respectable. And he'd have an audiobook of a John Grisham thriller so he can laugh at the legal writing.
Vali would have the complete Mozart violin concertos, John Williams' Greatest Hits, the Dixie Chicks' Fly album and all of Ella Baila Sola's music.

As to my OCs music collections, they're fairly varied.
Leiraya Moran listens to folksy music. Eddie From Ohio, Great Big Sea, Christine Lavin, Deirdre Flint, Moxy Fruvous, Dar Williams, artists like those.
Skye Darre listens to a little bit of everything. The people she works with tend to play a lot of techno, but she's not a huge fan of it herself. So her iPilot would include artists such as Bruce Springsteen, Morning Musume, Singer Songer, the Beatles, Jonathan Coulton, and Joe Clay.
Alyse Darre, on the other hand is a bit of a rocker. Green Day, Bruce Springsteen, Matchbox Twenty, Five Iron Frenzy, Me First and the Gimme Gimmes, Reel Big Fish, etc. Anything she can crank up really loud while training.
Khaylia Vand, who you'll find over in the KOTOR 3 project, likes fun danceable music. Britney Spears, *NSync, the Backstreet Boys, Spice Girls, anything high-energy and bouncy.
And that's all I have for now. But I have to admit, all this has inspired me to make character-specific playlists instead of just story-specific lists. My playlist collection grows!

Eh, on another thought, with the Fanfiction Awards 2008 coming up (being a gauge for popularity), what can be deduced about the popularity of OCs? Familiar names? Have OC's started to root themselves in the fanon conscious?
Just wondering, since someone I RP with brought the issue to view...
I actually have more songs to contribute to my character playlists, going through so much music a month XP
Seiheild
1.The Dresden Dolls - Boston (Breakup theme, the feeling I was trying to convey in last month's challenge response)
2.Rihanna - Umbrella (this would be the song that every warrior knows. I have a plot bunny where Elan sings something along the lines of Amphibrella)
3.Fullmetal Alchemist Cast - Shonen yo, Shinjiru Nakama yo (Oh men, oh trustworthy companions. It's another hokey jazz song about military friendship)
4.The original Iron Man TV series theme (again, more hokey music. From the 1960's)
5.Avenue Q cast - If You Were Gay (various reasons, ahem)
6.The Dolphins From Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy - So Long and Thanks For All the Fish (He believes in space dolphins)
7.Sopor Aeternus - A Little Bar of Soap
8.The Wicked Cast - Popular ("did they have brains or knowledge? don't make me laugh! they were popular...")
9.Julie Brown - Earth Girls Are Easy

So, what do you do when the song you associate with a fic you're writing has just nothing to do with any of it? Happened to me just now and it's kinda weird.

Oh this happened to me some time ago too, MsL! I was writing an update for 'The User' and all the while listening to different cover versions of "Mr Bojangles". The scene involved a character in a nightclub that was an assault on the senses. But whenever I re-read it all I can imagine pumping from the club's speakers is 'Knew a man Bojangles and he'd dance for you..."
Very surreal

Remy's tunes: It’s an established in-story fact that Remy is an avid fan of the Max Rebo Band. So his playlist would definitely have a few songs from them. I could also see him enjoying punk and its various sundry offshoots, which would extend to songs like “Know Your Rights” by The Clash, “Tick Tick Boom” by the Hives (you probably know this one - it’s hideously overplayed on commercials, TV shows, and at least one movie), “Mysteries” by the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, “I Wanna Be Sedated” by the Ramones, and the like.
Jav's tunes: I see Jav as having very mellow musical tastes. I don’t think he’s a classical kind of guy, but I would see him having the entirety of Miles Davis’s “Kind of Blue” on his playlist, along with “The Dangling Conversation” by Simon & Garfunkel, “And So It Goes” by Billy Joel, “Sad, Sad Song” by M. Ward, and more.
Anachronous songs: I have chosen songs for my fic soundtracks to purposefully play against the tone of the scene. Think "Little Green Bag" in Reservoir Dogs or the opera (I forget what song it is) in "The Untouchables". Though there is usually a connection lyrically. For example, I set a scene of a character being beaten to "Go Down Gamblin'" by Blood Sweat and Tears. The victim was a gambler who owed the other guy money, but the song's up-tempo horns (intentionally) don't fit the cold violence of the scene at all.

RE: Essential Guide to OCs - New Challenge Up and Running! (AND) What's On Your OC's MP3 Player?

See, these kinds of topics are why I love the OC index. I've never thought about what sort of music my characters would want to listen to, but thanks to this topic I was able to identify their tastes pretty quickly. I'll go for my big three and try to figure out their favourite style and a few of the tracks on their iPilot.
Tadgh - Tadgh likes modern artists that represent themselves to be in the style of the old masters. This pretty much limits his listening tastes to those few bands and singers in the top 40 that try to emulate the years gone by with inoffensive, pretty easy listening tracks. I can imagine him having a wide catalogue of the sappier Robbie Williams songs like 'Feel' and 'Come Undone', alot of Jet songs like 'Are you gonna be my girl'. To balance it out however, he's keen on the old stuff to the core. Queen's "The Show Must Go On" will be close to his favourite song ever.
Taban - He's a bit different. Old swing standards are his first love, like "Perhaps, Perhaps, Perhaps" or 'Just a Gigolo/Aint got nobody'. Then his playlist swings violently toward a genre that's little known but done wonderfully by an Australian artist called "Punk Opera". Any song by Kate Miller-Heidke will have a play count in the hundreds (I strongly encourage those who are intrigued by the concept of Punk Opera to do some Kate Miller-Heidke googling.)
Keys - An old rocker till death. The Rolling Stones will hardly ever be off the song rotation. The Beatles will get a look in too, as will Queen and T-Rex. Her favourite song in the world is 'You Can't Always Get What You Want' by the Stones, and she insisted that this be her and her husband's 'song' even though it's got a melancholy theme behind the catchy tune. Her husband agreed if only to keep the peace, but he wanted 'Up where we belong".

I think Sian Ny would listen to heavy metal or alternative rock, but he'd have a penchant for sappy love ballads as well. Of course, he'd never ADMIT he liked love songs.

I'm glad everyone enjoyed this excercise! I think initially when you see the topic, authors might take the idea from earlier of an OC's "theme song" and just expand on that. I'm glad people recognized that what you as an author may listen to so as to be in the right frame of mind to write an OC, may not be a fair representation of the character themselves.
For instance, shuffling my iPod, the first five songs to come up are:
"Room for One More" by Anthrax
"Loyal to No One" by The Dropkick Murphys
"Blackacidevil" by Danzig
"Through the Never" by Metallica
and "N.W.O." by Ministry
Would I call that the soundtrack to my life, no; is it a fair representation of my personality...maybe.
_
Lemme' join in with a few characters yet to debut (save one); the songs are more fitting towards their personality, but aren't necessarily what I would listen to when writing a scene with him/her featured in it.
Kila Dare'ian; on the surface a no nonsense Twi'lek female smuggler who tends to hold a very tough exterior up to the world.
"$@%*list" by L7
"Brackish" by Kittie
"Freak on a Leash" (acoustic) by Korn feat. Amy Lee
"Like a Prayer" covered by Tori Amos
"S.O.S." by Apocalyptica feat. Christina Scabbia
Loki; while somewhat of a dark and curious character, Loki doesn't fancy himself as much. Rather he prefers to see himself somewhat of an evolution of what droids can become. Hence, he tends to listen to musical scores more than any other style of music.
"Cursed by Beauty" by Tyler Bates ("300")
"Inside the Tam House" by Greg Edmonson & Joss Whedon ("Firefly")
"Davy Jones" by Hans Zimmer (PotC II: Dead Man's Chest)
"Inside It All Feels the Same" by Explosions in the Sky (Friday Night Lights)
Nomi Windcharmer; is a very earthy and idealistic character. Her tastes run to be very melancholy as she sees more of the galaxy for what it truly is.
"Burning the Midnight Lamp" by Jimi Hendrix
"Listen" by Toad the Wet Sprocket
"Nothing Is As It Seems" by Pearl Jam
"Comfortably Numb" by Pink Floyd
"Don't Follow" by Alice in Chains
Greppy, is a Bothan slicer who views the galaxy much in the same way as an out of touch a stereotypcial middle class suburban kid would. Very distant to the reality becuase his life really isn't all that bad. If Star Wars had their own version of American Pie or Van Wilder; Greppy would star in it.
"Mutt" and "Damnit" by Blink-182
"Anthem" by Good Charlotte
"Sassafras Roots" by Green Day
"Fat Lip" by Sum 41
Granted, some of these songs kind of cross pollinate, in that I say for instance I may actually listen to Good Charlotte when writing about Greppy, but only becuase I know it's that type of music that brings out his personality.
