History wouldn't be history if none of it didn't involve strange folk. grin

I take some inspiration from the characteristics of certain historical figures (usually those who were eccentric and bold and, for some reason, were British and lived before WWII...well, there is one American writer...). Most of the time, I draw inspiration from different sources: places tend to influence my personalities (because character can be made from a locale. Where a person lives often influences aspects of personality, for good or ill).

I don't manage my OC's, they manage me. tongue

Truthfully, I wouldn't mind using something like Ale's character sheet. Especially for my major OC's, as there are details that sneak into my fics almost without me realizing they've done so until I re-read them. Then when I try to reference it later on, I have to go back over the story to find it again (example: was that mole on his left buttocks or right forearm... maybe it was in the middle of the forehead? silly ). doh!

laugh Indeed!

I definitely agree that my OCs manage me. Once I get a general sense of who they are, they start calling the shots. tongue But it sure makes hammering out a plot quite the adventure. Especially when they start hitting on each other. laugh I've had one OC insist that she's in love with Luke Skywalker no matter how old he is, and another whom I thought was straight suddenly fall in love with his buddy.

So far I've found character sheets to be helpful as exercises in developing characters (especially if I treat it like an interview in which they have to answer in their own voice), but my OCs really don't seem to like being pinned down and defined. As weird as that may sound. It feels like a violation of their privacy, like if I tried to keep files of character sheets on my friends. Or maybe stealing their soul.

Despite all of this, I assure you that I'm completely sane. tongue

Ah, OC's and their love lives...I have this one character who I decided wasn't going to have any kind of physical relationships, or fall in love. Yet, at some point, said OC decides it might be interesting to pursue certain...physical activities without the emotional part. Then she went even further, and decided it might be fun to become involved with two specific guys, and actually becomes "attached" to one man. They will get married, or go through some kind of commitment ceremony, in the future.

Now, she wants things to go *her* way, and I still want to pursue the original concept I had in mind for her. But perhaps her way is best, because it's not such a cliche (unlike the sexless mystic, there's great dramatic potential to be found in a mystic who decides to tread willingly through the minefield of love).

I used to have detailed character profiles for some of them, which got lost when the computer they were on died. (Which has sadly happened quite a few times now, almost to the point where I've almost given up writing!) But I need to do them for some of the characters that show up quite a lot, just to keep track of things and it would probably be better since these days there's such long gaps between writing updates. Uni's to blame for that, which is why I've not been around here for ages.

I've been thinking about putting my characters on the Star Wars fanon wiki site. I'm not sure if I should though. An alternative is to host my own wiki on my own computer, but I don't have one I can leave running it. Maybe I could get a second box or something.

The OC Database Redux!!!

We're back and in full swing. The awards season is over (the OC winners will be updated today), my own fics are back in full gear, so now I can dedicate some time back to the thread. Let's kick things off in style!

NEW CHALLENGE!

OC’s Need to Eat their Viggies to Get Big & Strong

Side story, background story, adventures in finding a restroom story…

Tell a story about one of your current OC’s, give a little expose on your favorite, or not-so-favorite OC.
No more than one post long!

Due date: August 29th!

NEW OC STORY OF THE MONTH!

August OC Story of the Month

Let’s start again! This is wonderful little gem I tripped over seeking out great new stories:

Force Exile II: Smuggler is the sequel to a story featuring a Jedi Knight now finding himself trying to a pot-Order 66 galaxy.

Written by newcomer to the boards Atarumaster88, this guy is new to the JCF, but not to Fanfiction, check it out and his expansive articles on Star Wars Fanon Wiki

NEW DISCUSSION!

Tying in with the OC Challenge, let’s talk about the advantages and/or drawbacks to writing short stories or vignettes to help flush out an OC character (new or old).

Do you do it? Do you consider it canon for your OC? Or is it generally done just to write?

Let's get the better part of the last half of the year going full steam!

Oh! I like this challenge. Short and wide open. I've already got something cooking.

I like to use vignettes, drabbles, and shorts as a way to develop my characters' personalities and histories. While some drabbles might not happen exactly that way when I come to that point in the story, it's still the same idea and playing with the same character.

Oh, vigs are the lifeblood of my OCs. I've been using them to flesh them out ever since the old OC Dueling Circle. I have some OCs that are widespread in my stories, but only actually appear in vigs. And I'm a fan of slice-of-life style stories, anyway... at times it shows that I grew up on stories like Anne of Green Gables and Little House on the Prairie. tongue

I shall have to come up with something good for this challenge. grin

I knew there was something oddly familiar with your fics...

I love vignettes/short stories for OCs. It's a fun way to play with them w/o having to add/change the main story.

I think I'm gonna' have to come up with something myself! grin

An interesting thing about vignettes is that one of my favourite OC couples started out from a single vignette. I can't remember what the challenge was but I've used them again and again, and each time it's been a vignette. I did give them a tie-in fic with my diary challenge fic and that lasted a few posts.

For me, I like them and they work well. Not all stories have to last several posts and there are times when a single post will tell the whole story. Even with a longer fic, each part could be a vignette in it's own right with each vignette being a sequel to the one before it.

As for canon issues, everything I write about my characters is canon. If I have a character lose an arm then they'll not have an arm unless I write about them before they lost the arm.

Also, what starts out as a vignette can become a series. One OC fic started out as a one scene duel between an Jedi and a droid and is now a short trilogy and a diary challenge fic.
