It does?
I have had people pop up in a story after put a trailer in the appropriate thread. shock

I'd agrree that putting up covers in the fanart forum is not much help, though. people over tehre are more interested in art. or they'd be here. wink
And personally, I like a nice cover posted in the first post of a story. I'm a visual type, so 'seeing' what's about to come is a plus for me.

I don't see why a good poster couldn't be accompanied by some excellent text in the Trailer thread. It's not too showy, and it does stand out (there are more images than words in that thread, so something graphic will always stand out).

Besides, the low key approach is boring. Mavericks inherit the earth, not the meek (and they get remembered, too).

Hmm...I could've swore I read a thread where many readers said they dislike flashy advertising.

Another thing not to do is send out invites.

There really is no special way to getting readers. You just pray and hope you get at least one loyal reader. Also you have to remember, it's easier to lose readers than to gain them. They have many peeves and your story could easily fall into one of them. All in all, be confident and be full of hope. And don't do what I did when I first came here... doh! I don't even want to remember.

Well, I wouldn't call putting an ad in the advertising thread 'flashy advertising'. It's not as if you were shoving your new stroy into everybody's faces. Nobody can force you to read the ad-thread, but if you want, you can always browse to see what's new out there.

Flashy would be more like mentioning it every second line you post; in big letters, linked, with an 'R&R' rather obvious next to it.

One important point is to finish writing the story before posting it. I've found that you tend to get a lot of half-finishd stories on these boards, for a variety of reasons, no doubt. The only problem then is that your tempted to post a lot at a time, which puts people off. On another board I go to, there was member who'd posted more than one chapter one after another on the same day. When you're busy with other things, it puts you off reading it because there's just so much of it in one go. As other people have said, timing's important as well. Post it on a day when a lot of short stories are due to be posted, then it's bound to get buried. As I live in the UK, the time difference will probably have an impact as well - if I post a story when it's the morning here, it could be on the 2nd page by the time it's evening in the US. What you also have to remember is that there will be popular stories that will get comments on as well as new stories being posted, or authors updating their stories. There's really only so much you can do to get readers, anyway, I think. The rest is just down to luck.

Uh, one thing that helps a lot with getting people to read fics is easy to read formatting.

- Break up large paragraphs as much as you can
- Always start a new paragraph when a new person starts speaking
- Good punctuation
- Blank lines between paragraphs.

Without good formatting a potential reader might skip a story without even trying it out if it looks like it will be a lot of eye strain or take a lot of time figuring out who is talking to who.

I agree, ardavenport. Good punctuation, keep it easy to read, and make sure you check your spelling and grammar. This is where betas and re-reading your chapters before you post them come in handy, and if you write in Microsoft Word, AutoCorrect, SpellCheck, and the custom-created dictionary are your friends.
