Even though I'm staff, I wouldn't use the beta reader list. It worked great when the Archive first opened, when we had no WR, let alone a thread dedicated to beta reading, and there were fewer people signed up, most of whom were JC regulars and experienced beta readers. Now JCers have much more efficient resources. The list is still helpful, though, for people who aren't JCers (you guys don't get to see all our submissions - a great deal of them are from non-JCers) or as a last resort for JCers.

Ah, I see. More mess than it's worth for the most part. tongue

Oh well, couldn't hurt to try. Thanks. grin

That's why I went for the mailing list. I don't have that kind of access, which is frustrating.

You have readers. So you have resources. That's how I found most of my first betas (and they're still my betas!) I also asked the very first writer I read on these boards and she was kind enough to say she would beta. I didn't know it at the time, but I also got a great friend in the bargain. happy

Seriously, if you have someone who regularly replies to your work (and you do) then ask them to beta. Especially if you think they'll know what to look for and have the writing/editing skills needed. All they can do is say no. tongue

So the resources are there, you just have to be willing to make the effort to ask. Even if someone doesn't have the time at the moment, they're usually flattered that you asked. happy

See, I already know that I'll get a "no" in advance. I have readers, yes, but they aren't friends. You don't ask people to beta for you unless they're a friend or decent accquaintance first. That's why I went to the mailing list. :

Knowing people is great when you actually *know* them, not just when you know their names. Does that make any sense?

But Snerd is the man with the plan, as it appears, so hopefully he can work some magic with the system.

Not necessarily the truth.

I mean, how do you know ppl will say no if you don't ask?

Ppl don't have to be friends to give a great beta. One of my readers on ff.net gave me a big paragraph response to my story, and when I emailed back and asked if she could elaborate, she did a great beta on a specific problem that even ppl in my writer's group (some published authors!) couldn't really figure out how I should fix.

And after this correspondence, I would count her as a friend, although we don't run into each other on the boards much.

So, this may be one way to MAKE friends, actually.

I'd offer to beta, but I'm too behind on crap. Some poor author is gnawing their fingernails because I've sat on their story for weeks. worried blush I'm reading it right now! Honest.

Clara Motion Wright, if you're reading this ... Thanks!

wink

No, because that's not the case. You don't have to *know* them well to ask them to beta. I've sometimes asked on the story I want betaed for help and I've had people I hardly knew who would volunteer. They were readers but they liked my work and they became friends later. Actually some of my real-life friends are horrible betas so it's better to get someone who knows how to write or someone who enjoys reading/writing SW fanfic.

If it's not more than 50 word pages, I'll beta it for you. Send the word doc to my email address.

Also, the BetaReaderIndex doesn't have many betas listed anymore (sadly) but there are several good and active betas, and they're worth a shot.

Whoever you get, see if you like their writing.

I hate to say it, but we get many fics submitted that have been beta'd by the required two people and they are full of grammatical errors, spelling errors, punctuation mistakes ...

And we scratch our heads and go, "Why don't these betas ever catch this stuff?"

confused

Just a quick update to let you all know, if you don't already, that the Archive is working again. Anthony fixed it and said it was a problem with the server.

I'd also enourage anyone who is willing to beta to also sign up to the Archive beta list. You have no obligation to take anything if you are too busy, but it could help those who might be shy about asking someone directly or who feel that they don't have anyone to ask. happy

You can always put a note up in your fic that you want two betas for Archive submission. You'll probably get responses. But that won't happen if you lock your fics before anyone sees the note. If you truly want beta readers, you can get them but you have to make some effort of course. If you're active on the forums, then there are betas to be found.

Don't assume you know what people's answers will be. You've already found in dianethx (and she's an awesome beta believe me!) Surely you can find one more. I'd do it but I still owe some betas. Archive submission takes some work, and part of that is getting your betas. But really, they're out there. Put the notes on your fics that you want betas for and see what happens.

If your fic features a canon character, you might be able to ask for a beta on one of those threads. If it's an OC, our OC thread might be a good resource. Again, lots of ways to go about it.

LLL: And we scratch our heads and go, "Why don't these betas ever catch this stuff?"

The first time I beta'd (different fandom), that person utterly ignored my spelling and grammar corrections.

I've had that happen. sad I never could understand that because I've always made sure to listen to my betas (thank goodness!), and if it was something I felt I should discuss with them (a plot point, characterization, style, etc.) then I did. But I really listened... And most of the time I changed it. grin

I sent a message out on the Archive beta list (1-2 months ago) and I did get one reply and a beta-read. I'm still looking for that second beta, but I've got so many other things going on right now with my move that I may not be able to do much about it for a few weeks.

Hmmmm, I tried getting onto the Archives page and the first time I got an error message, but it came up the on the second try. Perhaps the server is still a little buggy?

For articles, do you still need 2 betas? I'm assuming you do...

Actually, articles have a pretty different procedure. You email it to the editors and the editors post it on our board for all the reviewers to comment on. I don't think you need official betas, though it might be a good idea to have someone (or two) look it over. The reviewers commenting on it will probably catch any problems, but, like anything, if it's riddled with errors, the less likely we will be to accept it.

Obviously the editors have to confirm this, but I'm pretty sure that's how we do it. happy
