Correction, Diane. Hackers need to get jailtime.
And the rolling eyes is directed at the jerk who did this, btw. Not you.

DarthIshtar posted: It's been a very long time since there were writing challenges. Can we have one sometime this year?
The editors discussed this and came back with an unanimous "no way" for the immediate future (our queue is a bit full at the moment). As for later on, well, allow me to explain.
The Archive challenges in the past and their results weren't well-received. One of the first - the first? - was A/P's wedding day. The results of this challenge were complied into two anthologies - "Do You Take This Man" and "Do You Take This Woman" (I'd link, but ... ya). The anthology format was chosen because there was (and still is) no way to search for challenge fics and the editors at the time felt that one single volume world make comparing results easier. There were also some entries that weren't long enough to really stand alone outside of the anthology setting. The contributing authors were dissatisfied at this arrangement, since they didn't have their own cover, comments, or stats.
Naturally, we could forgo the anthology and just archive fics regularly, but that could get tedious on the reader side - given that the archive only has, say, four new fics a month, as opposed to the 100s that the JC does.
We refuse (sorry) to archive a fic that we don't find to be Archive-quality, so that limits things like contests - we could very well have a contest without a winner if no one writes an acceptable fic. We also have nothing to give a contestant or winner - no colors and title. We already devote ourselves to going all out for just a regular acceptance - each fic gets the best cover artist we can find and gets upped to the top of the archive for a month, what more could we do with our current site set up? It's kinda like just plan getting accepted is a challenge enough.
With no special archiving method and no type of reward for the authors, any challenge we would produce would be little more than a glorified prompt ... and, well, we already have an adoptable plot bunny section
Obviously, people are welcome to suggest how they would see a challenge working for the Archive. Feel free to idea bounce here, if you want.

*** In other news....
We are back up and running and my archive mail spam has returned full tilt. I may ask Anthony to break the page again.
Anthony Tech quote: I did a full restore from last nights back up, which was clean. That fixed the DB. With the logs on, I was able to determine the entry point, and I closed that hole. I also added a few other lines of security code, just in case. That should hold them off for a while. :-P
If anyone thinks something is missing or we haven't recieved an e-mail, please let me know.

Anthony just emailed.
The site appears fine for the moment. Anthony patched up the hole they used and ran a search for other scripts that could be vulnerable to a similar attack. Some of the non-public editor pages are still a bit funky, however, so we may not be completely out of the woods yet. Philip has been notified, too.
I would advise that people hold off from submitting for a few days. Perusing the site for reading should be just fine, though

Good grief.
Well, now it looks like ALL our articles are gone.
Anthony is at work on the problem.

The articles are back up. There may be problems spotted here and there for a little while. This is due to the nature of the hack; they broke numerous columns in the site's coding, and Anthony had to manually search for the breaks and fix them. He missed some on his first few passes. So, if you find anything like the problems we already have been experiencing, rest assured that it's probably not a new attack or anything dangerous to our servers or your computer.
Let us know if you do stumble across anything and we'll send it to Anthony.

Now our submission form isn't working and story files aren't being uploaded. Anthony has been emailed. Please don't attempt to submit until this is fixed, thanks.

*nods* We will be glad to examine your stories when we can actually see them. Despite recent appearances, we are not running an archive of titles.
At least, we really hope not.

For when we do get back up and running, a word on behalf of those of us who print stories out to review them and then try to save paper by printing on both sides.
Actually, two words.
Page Numbers. Page numbers are really, really helpful.
Thanks.
