Well, my main problem is that several months ago, I was told a combined major between dramatic arts and music was possible, but when you look at the requirements for both, it doesn't fit in a schedule. For me to do a combined major, I'd be studying for 5 years instead of 4 because my drama major requires me to have all these context courses in the first year and in the upper years there's no room for electives because they recommend other optional drama courses for your electives if you're in the Theatre stream (which I am). Music does a similar thing itself.
In my first year, if everything was perfect, I'd be taking my two mandatory Drama courses and my three mandatory music courses (theory, music history and applied music) but no! First year drama students have to take three context courses in Language, Science and Social Science. And music doesn't fit. So, I have a lot of stuff to smooth over. Right now, I've managed to get a schedule that's okay, but I couldn't get into the science I wanted because my main theatre course runs from 9:00 to 1:30 on Monday (yeah... loooooong class) and a lot of lectures take place during that time frame. It's difficult to get everything to fit.
At the moment, I'm registered for a full year with all my courses in place as if I wasn't doing a double major. I have the two drama courses, Spanish (language context), History (social science context) and Astronomy (science context -- you know you're a fanfic writer when you take Astronomy because it could help you with your Star Wars fan fiction -- just kidding ), but I still have to sort out the music stuff.
I've got a long way to go yet to sort out everything before September. Oi.

Is this going to be your first year? I'm leaving for college this fall too.. fortunately my advisor took a liking to me and I'm taking a boring major of English, lol. So things worked out pretty well for me. But poor you! I will keep my fingers crossed that things work out.

Yes, that's my first year (at the moment). We're waiting to see how music is going to fit in.

(tiptoes in)
I hope everything works out with your schedule, Idrelle_Miocovani. At least the problem is with your first year schedule rather than your last; one of my friends ran into a situation where two courses she needed senior year were only held at the same time, and both departments had known for three years that ten or more students would need both that year. There was much scrambling for quick-completion minors. I managed to dodge most of that sort of problem, but I was lucky enough that one of my own two majors had courses the same time each semester so I could predict things reliably for that major.
I finally got the master's degree that was the major reason I drifted away from here . You know you've been away from the forums for a while when most of the user icons you see weren't available the last time you logged on, only one of the Fanfic mods is someone you recall being one, and you don't recognize one of the mod usernames at all. Plus there is the issue of having missed two entire FAQ revisions .
I missed you guys .

Sure...you're just kidding. That's what they all say.
Have you thought about majoring in one and minoring in the other? Or does it not really make a difference?

LOL, wow, all my old readers really are coming back from the dead. Congrats on the Master's.
My freshman coursework was easy. BYU has General Education requirements and you could choose the "Freshman Academy" courseload for writing emphasis where you took the courses required for a humanities college major or one where you took biology and headed for the sciences, etc. etc.. I took a religion class, an advanced writing class, a vocal skills class, a history class and Hebrew.
And that's not a boring major! English rocks!

Welcome back, JalendaviLady!
Jade, if I minor in music, the way things work out I wouldn't be able to play my instrument. I'd be minoring in music theory and history, which is not what I want to do at all. I want to progress with my musical ability... and get my theatre major. It's really confusing the way things are right now because of the demands of both the music and dramatic arts programs (there's no room to manuever with the electives, because the electives are either context credits or are recommended courses in other streams of dramatic arts). I'm doing a terrible job of explaining it, but I'll get something sorted out. Eventually. After many headaches.
edit -- Ish, I wish I could take some writing courses, but they're humanities courses and I'm not allowed to take them as electives because I need those silly context credits from the other faculties. It's cruel!
Oh well, I get a 9:00-1:30 theatre lab Monday morning.

That's insane that you can't minor in an instrument rather than in theory. Some people are happy composing, others conducting, and there are those who cry out "Sheet music, please!" Sure, it takes some background in theory to get excellent at an instrument, but not a college minor's worth, surely.
And no writing electives? No humanities electives, period?
JadeSolo: Yes, productive. In more senses than one. I've proven to myself that I can complete a long narrative series written so totally out of order, that was quite a bit longer than the one long piece I did finish here. It was rather odd dreaming of being a novelist without being able to complete anything near novel length, and now I have.

Nope, not for first year because I'm in the humanities department. We need to have the context credits (Language, Social Science and Science) for first year, plus whatever mandatory courses for our major. In my case, I have two Dramatic Arts classes. That brings me two five classes, and they really don't recommend taking six. And I can see why. With the corresponding seminars that go with the lectures, there's no room to do anything except go to class.
But, we're inquiring into getting permission to bypass the rules for the context credits (I thought I was done with science... *grumble*). Basically, I want to play my instrument and they better let me, or else they will have one very disgruntled student on their hands. I just need to be persistent; the Head of the Music Department wants me to call her after the weekend is over so we can sort out my options.

Well, that sucks. I'm an English major, but my professors are understanding of my music obsession. When there are only 5 choirs that require you to audition first and you're in one of them, they let you off class early, work around concerts, etc.

Ugh. NYU has the Morse Academic Plan, where you have to take certain "subjects," and they give you three options for completing your requirements: (1) take the courses specially designed for MAP; (2) take any approved real class (example: two semesters of chem, physics, or bio took care of the science requirement); (3) place out of them with AP exams, where applicable.
I managed to get out of language and math requirements with (3), did a (2) when I didn't really have to (but oh well), and did a (1) for the science requirement - BIG MISTAKE. Good lord, that was a terrible class...when I managed to show up (no fan of the 9:30 a.m. was I). Should've taken a real class - I probably would've failed the labs, but hey, at least I would've been doing something interesting.
I hope your grumbling gets you what you want. You'd think they would bend over backwards for students who are this motivated to attend the school.

Not so hot
I got it into my head to actually write a novel- and for it to the big one- and I've got it all planned out, but I'm just having issues starting it. I'm usually good at whipping out beginnings, but I have probably scrapped a hundred false starts today alone.

So, basically scheduling is always a nightmare (well... 95% of the time? ) no matter what university you go to?
I went hiking today at one of the provincial parks about 40 minutes out of town. My mom and I did one of the forest trails and then hiked out to the beach and went up the beach for the length of the park and then retraced the trail the way we came. It was fun. And we went swimming -- and I didn't get lobsterfied this time!
edit -- Sorry, AF, I somehow skipped your post. Got any music that'll inspired that first chapter? I usually try taking a break and listen to some music and go for a bike ride or a walk or something before coming back to work on it. Usually works, since the exercise clears my head and lets me think.
