leiamoody posted: Yeah, same here. It cost twenty bucks for me to have my second pair altered. It wasn't the waist that cost so much, it was the hem. Three frigging inches. All that for a pair of jeans I bought for six bucks. What a bargain.
Are you kidding? That's, quite honestly, a bit of a rip-off. Hems are probably the easiest thing to fix on a pair of pants. Waists, on the other hand, are a pain. But hems? Hems??
I was clearly not paid enough for all the alterations I did. :P

I know nothing about jean shopping. I have three that go back forever.
One is even stonewashed from 1991. I wear it sometimes. I don't fit in it, but I wear it.

Seriously, twenty bucks for one pair of jeans to be hemmed. I had to get a regular pair of pants hemmed at the same time, and those ran about the same price. Combined total damage: $42. I felt like I got ripped off, but what else could I do? *shrugs*
This, among many other reasons, is why I don't go clothes shopping very much.

$100 will get you a decent sewing machine and a copy of 'Sewing for Dummies'. Beer, pizza, or cheesecake will usually get you a friend to help mark the hem. In five pairs of pants, it's paid for itself.
I do my own alterations except for fiddly things like dress jackets. Fiddly things I prefer to sew from scratch to get the right fit, or I bribe my mom. Hemming pants is dead easy.
I'm short, too, and rarely find pants off the rack that don't need hemming. Since I've done it before, I no longer need a friend to help, I just lay an old pair I re-hemmed on the new pair and match it up right and mark the new hem.

I cannot sew, and I cannot be taught. Honestly, I should never be allowed near a sewing machine. I managed to break a new one in 8th grade Home Ec (something about thread getting caught around the bobbin and going up into the machine itself). The teacher literally banned me from going near one for the rest of the semester.
As for getting a friend to do it...I need money just to BUY a friend. You mean to tell me I'd need another $100 to get them to do me a favor? Paying a stranger to do alterations is a bargain compared to that.

I inherited my sewing machine. It was my mom's when she was in college, and it weighs about half as much as I do. At least, that's what it feels like sometimes. But it'll survive nuclear holocaust! They don't make 'em sturdy like that anymore...
Sewing is an amazing skill to have. See something you like but think it's overpriced? No problem! Just find a pattern that looks close and make it yourself, in whatever colour/material you want. Want a Star Wars costume but don't like the cheapo ones they sell at the store? Make it yourself! Not like I learned how to sew specifically for SW costuming or anything... *cough*
And then there's the hemming. I'm in a friend's wedding next June, and I'm pretty sure the dress is going to be too long for me. I'll find out tomorrow, anyway. Am I going to pay David's Bridal to make the dress shorter? Hell no! I'll have my mom pin it up for me, and I'll sew the stupid hem up myself.

Making my own SW costume would have been useful that one time I thought about taking a Hornblower naval type uniform and adding a lightsaber to it. Strange, yeah.

*falls asleep at computer*
I can sew enough to do minor alterations, and even hem a kilt! It's not my fault that the pleats wouldn't stay down. It was Mom who got mad about that and burned my skirt as a result. The hemming itself went well.

And what it all comes down to is that I haven't got it figured out just yet. Would I rather be feared or loved? Um... Easy, both. I want people to be afraid of how much they love me. Persia pwns your face.

Rarely find pants that I like in petite sizes, so I'm always hemming them. Sometimes I'm too lazy to break out the sewing machine and do it by hand, which of course takes alot longer.
Morning fanfic!!

Hemming, by hand? That could put you on the fast track to sainthood.
Really, how do you find the patience? I can't even imagine having that much willingness. You must be made of stubborn stuff. Seriously.

Morning all!
I can do hems, buttons and stick pre-glued patches to my kid's pants' knees but that's about it... With the exception of that one time when I was a bold teen and I volonteered to do the whole wardrobe of the production we were doing with my theater group (they were only tunics after all) but I think my motivation was mostly hormonal.

Hemming by hand isn't all that bad, time consuming yeah, but it's easy enough when sitting in front of the TV. I had actually done so this wekend while chatting online. lol
