All of my rather geeky friends gave me funny looks when I explained how I almost died trying to choreograph a 5-person lightsaber battle in a small trapezoidal room whose floor was covered in debris. I just told them that I'm a fanfic writer and I just had to plot out this scene in live-action. Earlier in this fic, I was doing a two-person battle in same said trapezoidal room, using my new fencing gear...
The people in my house are convinced I am crazy.
Especially when I nearly choked laughing over such stuff as Fanfiction! The Musical! and a few other funny stories. They see me wandering around laughing, and think I've really gone off the deep end.
And there was the time when I cited fanfic as an inspiration and help in a Gothic Lit paper.
I got an A and my professor told me that she loves Star Wars fanfic too.

I was rather pleased when she said that.
Today in Vertebrate Bio we were discussing how all definitions are relative, and defining things, and how everything depends on the context...
I started having visions of Vergere, and then I was looking at the stuffed birds and trying to figure out how physiologically possible a Fosh is...

There are a few people who know I write fanfiction in RL, but it is an extremely short list. And they all wonder the same thing.
Why don't I finish that novel that I've been trying to hide from everyone, by pretending to the whole world that I don't write at all, and actually become rich and famous, so I can host pool parties for them. LOL!

My sister always asks "Who is [insert character]." And I end up going into a full character synopsis that leads to telling the entire Saga and beyond history. She actually likes Tenel Ka and Tahiri because of me  ...and wants to name a kid "Jacen".
I love converting people. haha

JediMaster_JainaSolo: I do that all the time!  Most of the time my long-winded (and often snarky) explanation of a character fall on deaf ears... 
Another thing that Non-Fanfic writers may wonder--
Why when you type in a search about a science topic on Wikipedia and wonder why there are NO articles on the topic... and suddenly realize you were searching on Wookieepedia

This is a great thread! I have to admit to being mostly in the closet, although I have gotten weird looks for wearing an Anakin t-shirt that I originally got for my son (he out-grew it).

I'm lucky- my friends who don't write fanfic, read it. It's my parents who don't understand, especially since I write mostly original stuff these days. (Fanfic is a break for me.) No one else knows.
Oh, let's see...
~ why do you write it if you can't sell it?
~ why are you wasting time writing/reading it?
~ isn't it all slash or porn? (I've gotten that one way too many times.)
And then there was the time my freshman year in college where a then-friend told me to stop dressing like a geek (code for: stop wearing SW T-shirts and dress more like a normal female). My response, "But I am a geek!" She didn't know about my fanfic...
