Contest, by executive decision, will run through 11:59 PM Sunday, February 17, board time. After that, official points will be tallied and winners will be announced.
Humor Thread Add-On Story
Have you ever had one of those days? No, I mean those days, where you run late to work, end up getting soaked in the run as you dash from your car to the building to find your boss waiting for you with a pink slip, only to get in an accident on your way back home? Well, have we got a deal for you! In return for your crappy day, inflict some unpleasantness on poor Anakin in our add-on, Anakin and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day. Make sure that Anakin has the absolute worst day of his life, all courtesy of you, the writers! If you can conceive it, Anakin will endure it. Add on as the muse moves you (or perhaps, in this case, DRL).

Come on, peoples! Torture him! Take out all your frustrations over boring homework, dull classes, snipey co-workers, and car problems out on him!

Well, not literally You know, there's a lot of stupid things that happen in our days that seem to be worse than tragedies- spilling coffee on your white shirt, walking around with toilet paper stuck to your shoes... I'm sure that a lot of dumb things could happen to Anakin.

There was an interesting show on the History Channel called "The history of the joke". It certainly made me think more about comedy. Two things that struck me were that 'timing was everything' and that a joke is really 2 stories in one - the first story takes the audience in a certain direction and then the punchline yanks them in a different direction.

I saw a part of that, too. I don't know why, but I somehow think the first humor was in caveman days and took the form of slapstick. Some poor bloke accidentally drops his leg of some prehistoric mammal into the fire and some of the sparks from the fire go into the leader's face who promptly slugs the culprit over his head. The others laugh nervously as the poor bloak's head is caved in, glad that they're not him.

Oh, that does sound interesting! One of my favorite books, Planet Simpson, talks a little bit about that and about how and why humor in general 'works'. It's fascinating stuff, and it shows that humor and comedy can be a much more complex subject than you (general you) might think.
Love your caveman example, BTW, Alexis!

Going off in a somewhat different tangent... I wonder why some people are attracted to certain types of humor? Is it due to upbringing (as a Kid, I learned to never laugh at anything crude in front of my mom)? Does it depend on our moods and personality?
I think I might have to do some research with time I don't have.

I think personality does play a big role in what kind of humor a person enjoys. Also mood... there are somethings I will find hilarious when I'm really tired, so much so I practically fall out of my chair. The next day when I'm well rested, I'll re-read it and think... well it certainly is chuckle type funny, but hardly ROFL worthy.
Another interesting thing to look at is the reason for laughter. People don't always laugh because they find something amusing. Sometimes they laugh when they are uncomfortable... like my caveman example (I'm glad you enjoyed it, btw, amidalachick). The ones who laughed when the poor dude had his head smashed by the leader probably didn't find it funny, but were just scared witless... laughter in that sense is a defense mechanism. I guess as a way of detatching yourself from the uncomfortable situation.

I think how you perceive humor depends on your personality if you are alone. If you are with a group and feeding off of each other humor-wise, something that may sound totally idiotic might come off as hilarious. This can be physically in a group or through an internet group. I think people want to share in the humor so they are willing to be less critical of it. Alone is a different story.
I tend to like sarcastic humor. But frankly, most of the humor that others see as funny leave me wondering why they are laughing.

I'm going with personality. I absolutely adore puns, but most people I know hate them with a passion. I've learned who to engage in pun wars with and who to keep my mouth clamped shut around.
I also enjoy the absurd. Don't know why, it's just the way my brain is wired (ie: personality). I love the works of Douglas Adams and Gary Larson.
In our own little GFFA universe I enjoy reading cdmcc, Baron Coop and Dianethx for their often absurd take on things.

I adore puns as well. I think I'll become a political pundit.
