RE: Mother's Day Challenge - Open for discussion!
This challenge popped into my head once again. The thread got buried by the masses after Mother's Day, but I think this theme in fan fiction is still worth some thinking. We now have many wonderful examples of writing about mother/child relationships, and I'd now like to start a discussion inspired by them, as Alexis proposed.
So, to you as writers, how important is it to know the kind of relationship your characters have with their mother? Or their child, depending on the POV?

RE: Mother's Day Challenge - Open for discussion!
People are defined by their relationships. Children get most of their core values from their parents, either by respect or rebellion. That relationship also sets a mold that other relationships seem to fall into. The essence of the character is formed in that primary relationship, or lack there of, and everything else evolves from that.
Parents also learn from their kids. By the way their children react, they alter the way they interact with them. Sometimes the innocence of childhood can reveal a flaw of value or perception, if the parent is willing to listen. Parent's relationships with their children also introduce new priorities and feelings; it sometimes files down the harsh edges of said character.
Parents and children have immense influence over each other, whether it be intentional or not. These relationships are essential to understanding the growth of a character. So I think it is extremely important to understand parent/child relationships when trying to grasp a particular character.
Wow, my first discussion input! I thought it'd never come.
