I have a question. I know of an Star Wars author that rocks and I totally love all the stories she creates.

The only thing is that she can't sign up here, she's not that much into forums and some computer stuff and her stories are only in Fanfiction net but they are amazing!!

I love all of them and she has creates some of the most amazing au realities ever, so could I nominate her?? Pretty please??

Let me know please, even if I have to post her stories myself here, they are sooooo awesome, be well and take care.

Stories have to be posted here in order to be nominated. You can always encourage the author to sign up here - we have a lot of people willing to help newbies navigate the forums, so she'd be in good hands. grin

Posting her stories here on her behalf, even if she gives you permission, isn't a good idea - it's not actual plagiarism, but it's still frowned upon.

I'll try to talk her to post here, I tried years ago and she didn't felt she could do it, maybe I can just stablish her identity her and then just let her post her stories, really she rocks!!

She has given the Anakin/Luke relationship new depths really.

Thanks a lot for your response, be well and take care, Monica

So when we send in excerpts, is there a template we have to follow, other than it being 800 words? Like, do we need to include any information about the excerpt/story, or is that up to us?

If you could include a broken link to the story, the stories/categories each excerpt is being submitted for, and break any code like {b]this[/b] we'd really appreciate it. happy

Any additional information you wish to include (author notes, details about the story, etc.) is entirely up to you. Just a reminder that we do count author notes and things like that in the 800 words.

When submitting nominations and excerpts we use broken link formatting so the coding in the message can be seen later and used. The coded reference to this forum is:

Fan Fic Resources

To break the links so the code can be seen, we've been replacing the '[' or']' with '{' or '}':

{link=http://boards.theforce.net/board.asp?brd=10304]Fan Fic Resources{/link]

But why use '{' or '}' which look so similar to '[' or']'? Why not break the link with a character that looks very different, so it's more obvious?

#link=http://boards.theforce.net/board.asp?brd=10304]Fan Fic Resources#/link]

or

@link=http://boards.theforce.net/board.asp?brd=10304]Fan Fic Resources@/link]

This breaks the link just as well.

I assume that you would want everyone to use the same broken link character so you could change them all at once to the correct code in a word processor, but maybe another character would work just as well and be easier to see?

EDIT:

And if I add a few spaces I can still have an active link to click on, while still keeping the code visible:

#link= http://boards.theforce.net/board.asp?brd=10304 ]Fan Fic Resources#/link]

That's a good idea. If someone wanted to update the nom template for next year, I can't think of any reasons off the top of my head why that couldn't be tried, as long as one standard character was used. Personally, I like the # sign.

Thanks for the suggestion!

Suggestion for the future, not something that needs to be looked at for now, just wanted to throw it out there.

Right now for the nomination and voting process the rules state we cannot nominate of vote for ourselves.

Now, I agree with not nominating oneself because the point is our peers should be picking what they felt the best fics were in a given year. Also, given human nature, if we did allow us to nom ourselves, we'd all just end up nominating ourselves and then we would get nowhere.

However, I think that same human nature piece makes the no voting for oneself rule useless. We can all be nice and gracious, but deep down people do want to win. So if someone was nominated in a category then they have no motivation to vote for another fic in that category because that vote would count against them. The only reason I could logically see someone voting for someone else is they really felt deep down that there was another fic that was better than theirs, but again given human nature you have to ask what is the likelihood of that.

So this person's next option is to just abstain from voting in that category all together so that they don't hurt their chances of getting votes to ultimately win. However at the same time had the person been allowed to vote for themselves and someone else in that category voted for themselves then those two votes would essentially negate themselves out, having the same effect as abstaining from voting. And maybe that is why the no voting for oneself rule was implemented, since it would have the same effect if everyone nommed in a category and abstained from voting in it. Personally, I think the no voting for oneself (and this is the voting piece, not the noms) is a bit silly because logically if someone is nommed in a category who are they going to vote for besides themselves (barring any strong desire they have to vote for someone else)?

Again, not saying we should change things for this awards season since it is already well under way, just wanted it thrown out there as a talking point for later.

Of course. Because not winning - is losing - even if just being nommed should be considered an honor. It is an honor. It's the human animal in us, I guess - be dominant or be dominated, but we can rise above that if we try.

The only reason I could logically see someone voting for someone else is they really felt deep down that there was another fic that was better than theirs, but again given human nature you have to ask what is the likelihood of that.

Ah, though I'm a natural cynic myself, I do disagree with that. I have to wonder why everyone else has to set the bar so high. There's authors here than put profic authors to shame, IMHO, and far too many that provide inspiration to try to live up to their standards.

It may hurt to admit it, but it's honesty that makes us compelled to admit our best may not be up to the level of others' "bests."

C'est la vie.

I agree completely. I guess fundamentally there is nothing wrong with the "You can't vote for yourself rule," but for me it has always seemed silly. I've only voted in 3 of the award ceremonies, but logically it just seemed odd that I could vote for an author I thought was deserving, but at the same time, that author could not vote for themselves. Honestly, I don't know why the rule was setup that way in the first place, maybe it was to prevent confusion to keep it inline with the nomination process?

Reading back over my previous statement, it did sound rather cynical and I didn't really want it to be, but at the same time not quite sure how to reword it. At the end of the day, an author who is nommed and subsequently voting should take a step back and look at the other stories and authors they are nominated with and make an honest choice of who they think was the best that year. The right to be able to vote for themselves will not bar them from voting for another fic if they so choose. However, like I said, I am not sure why this rule was implemented in the first place, it was just a quirky thing that bugged me, particularly since a similar effect could be acheived from abstaining from voting under the current methodology.

Allowing people to vote for themselves would just open a huge can of worms. The awards have had enough drama without adding something like this to the mix. wink

I don't see a real reason to change it. If people honestly think that their fic is the best in the category, then they can just not vote for that category.
