Welcome to the 2008 Fanfic Awards Help Desk!
We have a talented group of assistants who can:
- answer basic questions
- walk you through the process of nominations, voting, and using the template via PM
- direct you to greater assistance if necessary
Please do not say names of actual stories, so we can keep nominations and the discussions of particular stories private. If your question is about a specific story, try to make your question neutral, or PM one of the overseers so we don't have to embarrass anybody by talking about them. 
Feel free to ask your questions to this thread, and one of our designated Help Desk personnel, a host, or one of the overseers should be around shortly to help you.
If your question is of a sensitive nature or you don't want to ask it out loud, PM either amidalachick or BigFatty. We'll keep it private for you.
So take a seat, get comfy, and we'll gladly help make the awards process as smooth and fun as we can for you!

The Saga one should be up already, but it will be posted soon.
Beyond should be up by the end of the week, and Before should be up sometime next week.

So here is my question: once you register your username for voting, can you just go ahead and send your noms in, or do you have to wait for some sort of conformation?

I have a question. Is there a limit to the number of times we can nominate a writer, it's just that there are two writers that I admire a lot and I want to give them credit for good work but I don't want to break any rules. I am choosing other wrietrs too, but it's just that two stand out. Thankyou

You can nominate/vote for an author for as many categories as you want, so long as the author's story or character hasn't previously won in that cateogory.

Question on excerpts: If the qualifying story are ongoing, is it required to have the material excerpted be from within the eligibility time period? For example, could I excerpt something written before or after the cutoffs?

Yes. The excerpt can come from any part of the story. From the FAQ:
FAQ posted:
Do excerpts have to be taken from something that was written during the eligibility period?
No, it can come from any point in the story, no matter when it was posted.

This is what the Awards FAQ says about those two questions:
8. If, by the close of nominations, a category has only one Qualifying nominee (or no qualifying nominees) and several Potentials, all stories in that category are taken to the voting round.
But for some reason I don't think that entirely correct. I remember reading somewhere that instead of all of the stories moving on, the ones with the next most noms moves on. If someone could clarify, that would be great.

Ack, looks like I need to update that. 
As per the results of last year's post-Awards survey, we will have a minimum of 3 stories per category in the voting round. If 2 stories or less reach the qualifying number of 4 noms, we will lower the number of noms needed by one until we reach the requisite 3 stories.
