Welcome everyone to the Before the Saga Fan Fiction Awards thread. Just a few important things to address before the fun begins.
PLEASE READ THE FOLLOWING:
What this thread is for:
-to list nommed fics
-to list qualified fics
-a place for you to ask questions about the rules and awards process
-a reference thread to help you throughout the awards process
-pointing out mistakes in our nomming lists
What this thread is NOT for:
-celebrating your noms (while we are happy for you, this is not the place to throw a party--take it to PMs or IM)
-a place to discuss your personal noms since that is private information. If you have a question on whether or not a specific nom was counted, please discuss it with us via PM.
THE NOMMING PROCESS:
1) Register! If you have not registered, your noms and/or votes will not be counted. If you have questions about registering go RIGHT HERE.
2) Go through and get ideas of whom you want to nominate.
3) Be sure to check whether the fics you are going to nominate are eligible for that particular award before sending us your noms.
4) Be kind to the volunteers and use the following template to send in your noms.

5) Send in your noms in ONE PM to Before_Awards_Sock.
Nominations are open June 22 – July 2.
6) We will go through the noms sent in and count them. We will NOT be sending you a confirmation PM regarding your noms. If you see your noms have been read and have not been received a PM from the sock about a problem within 24 hours of them being read, then you did your job correctly.
PLEASE NOTE:
-If your noms are not in the proper format, the volunteers have every right to send them back to you and have you fix them.
RULES FOR NOMMING:
1. Any story that has won in a previous awards ceremony is no longer eligible for nomination in the category(ies) it has been awarded, in this or in any future ceremonies. Please see the Fan Fiction Index for a complete listing of past winners.
2. Any author that has won in the "Best Author" or "Best New Author" category cannot win that same category again in this or future awards. Those eligible for the "Best New Author" category must have started their first fic June 1, 2007 to May 31, 2008.
3. Hosts and volunteers are ineligible for nomination in the era that they are working. Your Host this year is Lola64, with volunteers Ceillean, mavjade and Tahi.
4. Any story begun, posted on, or completed within the eligibility period (June 1, 2007- May 31, 2008) is eligible for nomination in any applicable categories unless it is an on-going story that has won the applicable category before. (See also Rule #1). This includes stories posted in challenge threads.
5. Stories that have been reposted from the Classic board are not eligible if they were finished on the Classic board even if they have been reposted to one of the respective eras. Please do not repost a story from the Classic board in an attempt to make it eligible again. If a story from Classic is still on-going, it is eligible for any category it would fit in the era it would be posted if it were to be reposted.
6. Stories that have been reposted from a challenge are not eligible if they were finished or posted before the eligibility period. Please do not repost a challenge story in an effort to get it eligible again. If a story from a challenge is still going, or was reposted within the eligibility period, it is eligible for nomination in the categories it fits, in the era it would be posted if it were to be reposted.
7. All nominated stories ("Potentials") will be listed in a Master Index using blind nominations. All those that reach the requisite three nominations by the end of the nomination period will be added to the Qualifying Nominations list. The number of nominations that a story receives will never be released. Stories for the Best Underrated category need only one nomination to qualify.
8. If, by the close of nominations, a category only has one qualifying nominee (or no qualifying nominee), and several potentials, the number of nominations will be lowered until there are at least 3 qualifying nomination in that category.
9. No self-nominations. No nominating with a sock. Nominating with a sock will result in a short-term ban and all your nominations will be disallowed. A sock is an alternate/additional JC user name. Be sure to register before voting, which helps us with this problem.
10. When PM-ing your nominations, please use one of the templates that is provided within this instructional thread. Your nomination must include the title, the author, the character if it is a character nomination, AND a link. You may either use the broken link template, or a list of all the required portions. Any nominations that do not follow those rules will not be recorded and will be sent back. You will be expected to fix the problems and return your nomination before they will be tallied.
11. All nominations MUST be sent in one PM. No exceptions.
12. You are not required to nominate in every category.
EXCERPT PROCESS:
1) Once nomming is complete, we will send you a PM with a list of all the category(ies) you have qualified for.
2) Go through your story(ies) and select what you would like to send in as your excerpt(s).
3) Your excerpt(s) must be 800 words or less, this INCLUDES any author notes you wish to include. Any excerpt in excess of 800 words will be returned and must be resubmitted before the end of the excerpt period.
4) Send in all your excerpts in ONE PM to the awards sock.
Excerpts are being accepted 7/6-7/16.
PLEASE NOTE all excerpts are to be submitted with broken mark up links, substituting { for each [ , so when the excerpts are posted all bold, italics, and highlights are properly represented. Volunteers are not responsible for any markup not coded in broken format at submission of excerpts.
5) You will NOT receive a confirmation PM regarding your excerpt. If you do not receive a PM concerning your excerpt within 24 hours of it being read, you did everything correctly.
PLEASE NOTE:
-volunteers have the right to edit or leave off words if your excerpt exceeds 800 words
-excerpts will be listed in the official thread in the order they are received
EXCERPT RULES:
1. Each separate excerpt may not exceed 800 words in length. This includes author notes.
2. Excerpts will be posted in the order in which they are received.
3. While it is not always possible, please try to send all your excerpts in one PM. If this cannot be done, contact the sock and we'll work out how we want you to send in the PMs.
4. If your story is nominated, but you will be gone during the excerpt submission period, you may make alternative arrangements with Lola64 to get your submissions posted. They will be handled on a case-by-case basis.
VOTING PROCESS:
1) Select which of the fics from the qualifying list you would like to vote for.
2) Send in your votes in ONE PM.
3) You are not required to provide any links with your votes. Simply indicate the category and qualifying story/character/author you wish to vote for.
4) You will NOT receive a confirmation PM regarding your votes. If you do not receive a PM from the awards sock within 24 hours of your PM being read, then you did everything correctly.
VOTING RULES:
1. You must register prior to voting, so that we ensure that you are not a sock. Registration will be open through the voting period.
2. No voting with a sock. Voting with a sock WILL result in a short-term ban and none of your votes will be allowed.
3. You may vote only once in each era, in one PM as stated earlier. If you send your votes in multiple PMs, they will not be counted. The only exception will be on a case-by-case basis, per information given to you by THIS SOCK only.
4. Voting is open from July 20 at 12:01 AM board time until July 29 11:59 PM board time. Late votes will not be counted at all--no exceptions. Early votes will be returned and you will be expected to send your vote in again under the correct timeline. No exceptions. See rule #7 if you will not be available during the voting period.
5. PM the Before_Awards_Sock. with your vote. Votes sent elsewhere will not be counted.
6. Only fics on the Qualifying List are eligible for votes. Votes for other fics will not be counted.
7. If you will not be available or internet-accessible during the voting time period, arrange with the host,
Lola64, for absentee voting. This must be arranged ahead of time, before the nomination period ends. Those needing an absentee ballot will follow all of the voting rules.
8. You cannot vote for yourself. Votes for yourself will not be counted.
